Title: Asking for some help for a great young man
Post by: bayonetbrant on October 24, 2017, 01:41:11 PM
One of Bayonet Jr's high school soccer teammates suffered a tragic accident while playing in a match.

He was hit pretty hard on the side of his face, breaking a bone in the orbital region that required surgery.
During this surgery, they discovered a muscle that had been caught in the fracture and had no blood flow to the muscle for several days. After waking up from the operation, he has no vision in the affected eye.

He is going to need extensive follow up, and we are all praying that he regains sight.

If you are able to make a donation to help in his road to recovery, it would be greatly appreciated!

This kid a 14-year-old whose family emigrated from west Africa a few years ago, and who now might be facing permanent loss of (or at a minimum severely-impaired) vision in one eye for life.  He was a hell of a player, but an even nicer young man.

Donations can be made via Venmo (http://www.venmo.com); search for "Daniel Seaton" and he's daniel-seaton-3

Please reference "Elysee Donation".

We are hoping to have donations in by tomorrow (Wednesday), so that our coach can present it to the family on Thursday.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Brant, I think you probably know this, but I'm essentially blind in my left eye from an accident when I was around this same age. At this point, I can kinda sorta see a bright light if it's directly in front of me, but nothing else.

Besides a donation to assist with immediate medical costs, if I can be a resource to this young man or his parents concerning dealing with this kind of loss of vision, let me know.

I appreciate that, and I'll let Danny know.  He's kind of the point man for the team's efforts with the family.  I don't know the kid well, but every interaction I've had with him has been very considerate and polite.  He's a really nice kid off the field, and was one of the highest-motor, most fierce competitors on the field.

Can you post a link to the donation site? For the life of me, I can't find anything on Venmo that matches what you wrote.  :-[

Yeah, apparently the way to find him on Venmo is to search for "Daniel Seaton" and he's daniel-seaton-3

Sorry for the confusion.  That's the info I was provided.  I'll edit the original post.

So Elysee is at the game tonight, sitting on the bench and laughing and joking with his teammates. Apparently, even with vision only in one eye, he is planning to come back next year and try out for the team again. That kid just won't quit. And that's kind of Awesome

The guy on our team in charge of donations just sent an update...

QuoteSince last Thursday we have received an additional $820 dollars from individuals, families, team affiliations from Cardinal Gibbons and others.  In addition, we have received a very thoughtful Panera gift card, goodies from Trader Joe's and many personal notes/get well wishes.

Yesterday via mail I also received a card sent by Beth Black signed by the entire Millbrook team along with a check for $765 dollars.  Coach Worley informed me that Enloe* contributed $200+ last night directly to him.   Kerri also received a card from the Leesville** team this week as well (this is addressed directly to Elysee so I will not open it.)

* the team we played last night in a playoff game (one of the largest, but poorest, in the county)
** the team he got hurt against

So there were 4 other teams in town that all pitched in together, plus who knows how many more individuals

They've raised over $3k on pretty short notice to help with this guy's medical bills

At the playoff game last night, the coach sent him to midfield for the coin toss as one of the captains, and he sat the bench with the team for the whole game
This is him w/ Bayonet Jr after the game (they were the only 2 freshmen on varsity).  You can still see how puffy his left eye/cheek are

Latest update:

He's actually starting to see some general shapes / colors out of the damaged eye

Cleared to return to playing after the new year, but required to wear goggles when playing

Not expecting any add'l surgeries at this time

Latest fund-raising numbers were over $4400

Good news. Hopefully this might mean his vision in that eye will improve even more.  O0

Just a quick update on this kid. He's got about 95% of his vision back, he's playing varsity again, and drew a penalty kick in the game tonight to put the team up 1-0 in the first half
