Use this thread to ask questions about everything and anything.
Rules you do not understand, MegaMek or MekHQ troubles, requests for the campaign, you name it. Thou shall ask!
Any idea what is up with https://www.megamek.org/ ?
I haven't been able to get to the site for the past several hours.
Same problem here.
If you google MekHQ GitHub you'll find it there as an alternate option.
I have a question for you guys:
How involved do you want to be with rolling actions for your company like repair and maintenance rolls, acquiring ammo and the like?
Do you want MelHQ to handle it and me just posting a summary or do you want to roll yourself?
A mix is also possible where you tell me to have MekHQ roll for you when you are away for period, so the campaign kan keep on ticking. Let me know!

It's back up now.

I wouldn't mind doing it myself, but for the sake of efficiency you may want to handle those rolls for the entire group.
What about a timeframe? Like I post a request for you guys to roll up X and you have Y days to respond. No response meaning back to autopilot by MekHQ for those rolls.
Or would that be unneccesarily complicated?
I ask this, because I'd like you guys to feel included in the campaign as much as I can, outside of the actual battles in MegaMek.
Its my first time doing this as well, so I am looking to find a balance and see what works and what doesn't.
I have a very pragmatic view to this; we can (and probably will) adjust as we go. Its just nice to know the baseline of preferences.
I think us making the rolls within a given time frame works and doesn't seem overly complicated. I'd prefer to make my own rolls whenever possible, but running a group thing online can be a little like herding cats :P
I have MekHQ installed now and will be working on my pilot today. I also have a wealth of reading material to keep me busy.
Thanks for running this. I'm looking forward to some good, old-fashioned Battletech!
Good!
Yes this has been a long time 'dream' of mine, so I am really glad to see there is interest. O0
We can take it slow as long as people keep on participating.
Do we have any new players that need a quick overview of the weapon platforms?
I think that would be appreciated by several players! O0
What step do you think you are missing Jamus?
Sorry Ysk I was out last night. I'll go through a dry run of the instructions you posted tonight and post up the results and where I am having issues.
I am new to this entire thing so be gentle.
Hey guys, don't worry! We can take it slow. I'll be gentle and, if preferred, I'll keep the lube nearby. :knuppel2:
Ok I think I know what I was going wrong. I'll sit with it tonight and let you know.
Alright good to hear! Do not hesitate to ask for help, better explanation or step by step guides if you run into trouble, but the more concrete you can make your request the better I can assist.
MekHQ and MegaMek can be hard to wrap your head around at first. They have more in common with accounting software than game software at times. :)
As far as rules it's a bit more complicated. I am unable to just copy and paste from the manuals due to obvious copyright issues, but I can explain rules in my own words. Many of the tactical rules are automatically enforced by MegaMek anyhow.
Some gameplay (like picking up ejected mechwarriors by another Mech capable of doing so) is a little less obvious, but once we'll start doing battles I'll try to have a post up explaining how things work and what to keep in mind.
Kushan and Gusington: are you guys doing ok with company creation?
How are you getting along, guys?
Sorry Ysk, I had a crap ton of IRL events going on this week and was completely burnt out to try to work on this.
Bright side I have most of my bio written so I just need to roll my lances now that I know how and I'll be good.
Sorry. Busy week. I will get it done this weekend.
As far as I know I'm not supposed to be doing anything yet. (Except re-installing MekHQ.) :D <:-)
Apologies Yassy I didn't see this thread until now - I should withdraw from this, it looks to require more time than I thought originally.

We point the sharp end of the sticks at the guys in red and make "pew-pew" noises.

Drive to Jersey and find out
Someone can randomly roll up a company for you, Gus, and you can chug along on that.
Actually... I'm wondering if a WHOLE COMPANY is too much to bite off and chew at once, Ysk. I mean a whole company for each of them (us). Why not start by assigning each of them a mech, or they roll one randomly, and roll play that from there? That's a lance, right?
One mech HAS TO BE easier to manage than nine twelve (and HQ).
^Hmm...ok.
And I've fallen for that Jersey line before, but not for ribs.
Ok guys I can understand things look a little daunting, BUT
-Gus indeed I could roll a random force for you and you could just focus on blasting your opponents to bits, if that helps?
-A company consist of three Lances, each Lance consists of four Machines.
The way the battles will work is that we generally have ONE of your Lances doing something against an opponent. So you control 4 units in a given battle.
The fact that we already have a company under control per player gives us more variety and more hooks for narrative.
-MegaMek does work with any force size, so you could play one Mech, but that will be underwhelming and getting everyone together at the same time to team up will be impossible.
So the battles will be Lance vs Lance generally (perhaps a few attached units) and player vs player or player vs bot if schedules dont match.
-Again, if you (anyone) don't care for rolling up a force yourself and just want to play battles with whatever force and personnel you get and learn along the way what the possibilities are for perhaps a next campaign that is perfectly fine! Just say so and I'll roll up your force.
-So don't worry! I know most are new and I know how complex the game can become. We WILL take it slow. :D
-That said, if one really thinks one can't put in the time its better to say so now. I am HAPPY to spend lots of time in this, but its a little of a cockblocker when things stall for long periods.
Ok Ysk, I have my command team rolled up. Not sure if it's 100% correct but i'll post them up in a bit and work on rolling the rest of the lances. I should have it all done this weekend.
It seems MekHQ gives a lot more information than MegaMek when rolling up characters.
Sorry about falling behind on this.
Not to worry! I'll review your crew.

Cool, thanks. Question - i was trying to create my mechwarrior without a mech and couldn't figure out how to do that in MegaMek. So i went to MechHQ to just buy one but didn't have funds. Should I do that for him and my support staff?
I'm not around much in the evenings the next two days but if it is something quick (or if you can generate them) then I think my company is set.
Thanks for the work on this, I'm really looking forward to it!
When creating forces and setting up in MekHQ be sure to press the GM button.
You can freely add and change forces without money.

Thanks. I did do that to edit some things. I shall try again.
Your company looks good, although those 6+ piloting skill guys will be tough to handle.
I suggest you swap an ability point to improve the stat, unless you have some roleplaying reason to keep it this way of course.
If you could export your personnel file for me, I'll be able to create your company in the master MekHQ.
Don't bother with the Mechs, I'll add them manually.
Are you happy with random pics for your warriors or do you want to choose manually?
Yeah it seemed like MegaMek wasn't randomizing them? Not sure what or if I did something wrong there. I'm fine if you want to re-roll them (in all honesty I'm not sure what dice combo is used); just let me know and I can update my character sheets.
I'm ok with random pictures. I figured I was taking so long getting this generated I didn't want to bog down picking pictures.
I'll tweak your guys.
Export as csv file and send it to me please : yskonyn (at) gmail (dot) com
Hey Ysk, did you receive my email?
Yessir! Will update soon.
For some weird reason my MekHQ has decided to not load anymore. If I click the executable nothing happens.
MegaMek loads fine so it doesn't appear to be a Java issue.
I have overwritten the executable with a backup, but no joy. Any suggestions?
I've had happen too. Typically I just reboot and it seems to work.
But in reality I've no idea.
It fixed itself indeed. Weird.
I am running intro trouble getting your personnel imported. MekHQ exports a .CSV file, but imports a .PRSX file. I am calling the helpdesk on this, so standby.
Once I have imported your personnel and have added your Mechs we can start the campaign.
The other companies can be created on the fly. This way we can get the campaign under way, cause we're due for some action by now! :)
What will happen is that we'll roll for contracts. Our officers will then have to decide for which faction we want to work (depending on Salvage rights, contract length, attached units, etc). When we have decided we will need to fly to our destination. In the mean time we can start ordering parts and munitions which will take several days or weeks to be delivered.
We don't have a JumpShip (not many Merc outfits have them), so we are dependant on our contractor's transport for now.
Jamus please export your personnel in a different manner. Its confusing and I couldn't figure it out either, but someone with more experience helped out:
In the personnel tab in MekHQ, select all your personnel and then right click to choose to export as .psrx
Send that to me please. Sorry for the hassle.
No problem Ysk, I'll get that sent out tonight.
Import succeeded! :bd:
I see that Msgt Smith is not included. Even though he he didn't roll his personal machine I do need him in the roster.
Also, please post the name of your company here and how you would like to configure your lances (you have three lances of 4 mechs).
After this I can create the OOB and assign roll your technical personnel.
Then we are a go!

I'll see what I can do. When I try to hire a mechwarrior (even with GM mode on) it was kicking out saying I didn't have funds. I'm fine if you want to roll him up for me.
Ah ok I'll add him. I thought he was just missing from your file.
I'll share a fluff file in the coming days for everyone to download so you'll get the mech picture in battles.
Back from vacation!
Expect this to move forward in the coming days.
I would appreciate the submission of the other companies guys! :bd:
Hi Guys and YSK,
How is this going?
Looking for another player?
Maybe I can help and play a small role somewhere?
-Mc
Hey McMaster, I will restart this up soon. Keep an eye here!
I am updating MekHQ and will roll for contracts.
McMaster, would you like to join OpFor or would you like to roll a Groghead company?
I have rewritten the instructions for rolling up a new company for a new player. I hope this is much more helpful!
http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=22062.msg605438#msg605438
And a seperate sticky here for easy ref:
http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=22872.0
Remind me how much I (as the larger-scope OpFor player) should be following those instructions...
But I'm provisionally assuming I'm 'playing' randomly rolled companies, with perhaps some adjustment in loadouts.
No need Jason.
You will play with whatever MegaMek decides the Grogs are up against. I'll allow you tweaks of course.
O0
Not entirely sure how this works, but per the request for spare parts requests -- are there any Ultra AC5s in existence yet? (I'd rather have Ultra AC2s if possible.)
Also small lasers.
No Ultra's are reintroduced by the Clans, so no dice. >:D
To roll your Lance please follow the steps here: http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=22872.0
Of course alter for a Lance only, so 4 Mechs / Mech pilots.
Am I still rolling for a Lance, or am I being assigned a Lance? (I'm unsure what's happening in the organization setup right now.)
Its up to you. Either you roll up a Lance and email me your units or you state you want to take control of an already available one.
To see which Lances have already been rolled look in the thread where the characters are introduced.
Jamus and I have both rolled several lances.
Obviously you cannot take any of the command lances.
Hm. I thought I did everything I was supposed to do, although when I got to this point ("Click on the 'Finances' tab and make sure all tickmarks are OFF in order to not have to pay for stuff yet.") I didn't see any tickmarks to tick to off. Or at all, for that matter.
I also didn't see any of this, although I looked around ("Accept the other options and let the campaign load up.").
Consequently, when I tried to hire my first Mechwarrior as Lance Commander, I didn't have the funds to do so, and it wouldn't let me continue, even though I had toggled the GM button as directed. (I clicked the button a few times to distinguish what I thought was on and off, on being a darker color indicating the button was 'depressed'?)

Ahem, bump!
Forget about rolling.
Download the new MekHQ baseline and have a look through all the equipment we already have in the regiment. Then either choose one of the already made Lances to command, or, request a new Lance by stating which Mechs you wish to use (from the inventory we have).
See the 'Reserves' in the TO&E tab for McMaster's units.
Got it.
Yeesh, there are 34 thousand + files?
Yes, but the good news is that you will only have to download the base pack once.
It includes all kinds of custom logo's and graphics I've added.
From now on you can just overwrite a MekHQ update over your basepack and for all things campaign you'll only have to get the campaign save file, which is much much smaller. We've done the heavy lifting now. Any additions to the art will be presented as seperate small packs.
It's okay, just that when I was extracting to overwrite the folder the 7-zip (or whatever it's called) had some kind of embolism the first time. I deleted the old folder after a system restart and simply extracted, no problems.
Suggestion: use an X-Com style operation name generator for the contracts. e.g. "Operation Gray Thunder".
I see you guys have been at this for some time already, but would be willing and able to take on another player? I can just cobble together a lance from reserves if you'd like to see the whole new player process streamlined (I did download the unit already).
Hey Snimm! You are welcome to join in.
Roll up a Lance and post them here and I'll get them added.
Well, I don't appear to be able to export personnel as a psrx file. I can send you my cpnx file, at least?
