Post by: Shelldrake on July 01, 2013, 06:31:26 AM
In the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador July 1 is Memorial Day, which commemorates the losses of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment (The Blue Puttees) during WW1. At the Battle of the Somme all 22 officers and 658 of 758 of all other ranks were killed or wounded during an infantry assault on 1 July 1916.

The Canadian folk-rock group Great Big Sea's "Recruiting Sargeant" is a moving tribute to The Blue Puttees.
