Title: All-time baseball list...
Post by: bayonetbrant on January 06, 2015, 09:57:43 AM
So today's Hall of Fame announcement got me thinking -

Best baseball player to never win a World Series is ____________?

Totally cool with 2 different lists, for field players and pitchers.

Ted Williams?
Don Mattingly?
Ernie Banks?
Craig Biggio?
Nolan Ryan?

Ted Williams, but there a lot of great players that never won a world series pennant.  Of course I'm partial and would say Harmon Killebrew.

Donnie Baseball most definitely.  Ken Griffey, Jr.  Mr. May, Dave Winfield.  I'm sure there's more.

Now that you mention it, I seem to remember something to that effect.  Thanks for the correction.

I pretty sure Rod Carew never won a series.  Tony Gwinn for sure.  Every decent Boston play after Ruth left and before 2000 whatever it was when the won again.  Every single Chicago Cubs play in the last century and they had some good ones.

yeah, but they had a lot of those guys that won titles elsewhere.  Exhibit A: Greg Maddux

I should caveat it.  Ernie Banks, Ryan Sandberg, that guy who interfered with the foul ball in the playoffs...

Tim Raines never won one, did he?  Andre Dawson?  Those awesome Expos teams with Gary Carter, Tim Wallach, Stever Rogers, Larry Parrish and so on.

No Raines and Dawson didn't, but I think Carter won with the Mets.

Carter captained the '86 Mets

Raines was on the '96 and '98 Yankees

Dawson got a ring with the '03 Marlins, but it was for his front office work with that team, since he's retired from the Marlins in '96.

I don't recognize the Yankees as World Series Champions.

Because you're a hater and fomenter of sports unrest.

Haha.  Perhaps.  Actually I thought Raines played only with the White Sox after the Expos.

I knew about Carter, forgot about Raines and vaguely recall the token ring Dawson got.  I refuse to believe 'The Hawk,' ended his career with the Marlins.  Noone that good should be associated with playing for an out fit like that.

A bit of a bummer our buddy gherig38 didn't get more love for the HoF vote.  At least it's trending upward, and we can hope he gets there in a few years.

Kevin Brown?  Moises Alou?  Livan Hernandez?  Charles Johnson?  Al Leiter?  Robb Nen?  Edgar Renteria?  None of those guys will make the HoF, but all were pretty damn good at the time.

Oh yeah, and that "Gary Sheffield" guy wasn't half bad, either, and probably should make the HoF.

I don't think Cy Young, Walter Johnson or Rube Waddell ever won a World Series. Talk about a pretty good starting rotation!

Johnson won in '24.

Cy Young won a title in 1895 with the Cleveland Spiders, before the World Series existed.

Can't find any evidence of Waddell ever winning a title, though :)

I liked quite a few of the Marlins players of their own merit, I just think the organization is shoddy and bush league.  I should have been clearer.

I saw that list this morning.

I gotta beef with it, though:  It's one thing to merely include players like Rose, McGwire, & Bonds; they did put up impressive numbers, after all.  However, it's another thing entirely for the list's author to actively agitate for their being inducted into the Hall.  Fuck that guy, and fuck them.  >:(
