Interesting setting. How can a one sided battle become a good subject for gaming?

Oh wait, it's alternate history

That is an interesting setting.  All kinds of interesting history tied up with Spain, the US, and the Philippines during that time period and after.  Most Americans don't even realize that the Philippines was a US colony for 50 years after the Spanish-American war!

I lived in Manila for a year-and-a-half, and got pretty immersed in a lot of this stuff courtesy of the folks I was living with.  It's absolutely fascinating stuff.

Interesting indeed. Like total war for ships?

With any kind of leadership, the Spanish fleet could have kept the US squadron in a long chase.
Instead of anchoring and waiting to be destroyed, just sailing out of Manila and hiding out in the archipeligo, would have stymied Dewey.  You could have a campaign around the search for the Spaniards, and then lots of ambushes and surprises.
Also, Dewey's coal supply was vulnerable.  Escorting colliers would reduce his available ships, and evened the odds.

And don't forget that the germans also wanted the Philippines.  At one time, the german squadron was acting belligerent.  The british commodore didn't think that was cricket and said he would join in to support the americans, defusing the situation.
What if he wasn't there?

Also noticed they released a prior version Clad in Iron Gulf of Mexico 1864....seems to be american civil war alternative

http://store.steampowered.com/app/693450/Clad_in_Iron_Gulf_of_Mexico_1864/

I don't know about these, even though fairly cheap price, did see a few writeups where they mentioned startup could be tough because no tutorials and features are attempted to be very historical in how they work...maybe some day.

The thing that always turns me off from these games is that it looks like every battle is fought in a pool or bathtub. No sea state or weather whatsoever. Total immersion killer.

Dont mind that so much as the fact damage modelling is extremely limited. So no individual gun destruction just what seems to be a pure hit point based system.
Having said that there is something about these games I really like.

That comes as somewhat of a surprise. I would have expected higher authenticity with damage modelling. Oh well, strike two...

Well it is slightly more complicated than I suggested as it has fire and flood damage - but it still basically comes down to hit points. But I think it would have tipped it over the edge had it modeled damage in a more discrete way. all guns fir until it rolls over and sinks. its quite a factor when some of these boats only had two guns. But there is something about it - whether the sedate pace or the graphics but something I like.

I agree the environment is way too sterile.  But sea battle in those times were almost never fought in anything more than medium rolls.

That may be true, but I bet more than a few battles were fought with at least a few clouds in the sky...perhaps a light drizzle?  :crazy2:

Hello! My name is Maxim Ferapontov. I am a developer of the computer game "CLAD in IRON: Philippines 1898". Thank you for your attention to our project!

I read your discussion and would like to say a few words. In our game, from the very beginning, the system of weather influence on the combat characteristics of the ship was implemented. First of all, the height of the wave affects the accuracy of artillery. On large ships this has less effect than on small ships.

Our past games are devoted to the events of the American Civil War and other naval battles of the 1860s. We used a weather system in them, but received negative feedback from the players. They believed that US monitors and CS ironclads are too good and strong ships, and therefore should be equally effective in any weather. We know that this is not so, but nevertheless removed the weather effect

Indeed, it is difficult for me to recall at least one battle of that period, which would take place under strong excitement. In the battle of Lissa, the low-breasted monitor "Affondatore" did not experience any problems. Perhaps this is the battle of Helgoland during the Schleswig War, but I did not find reliable information about the weather.

It is not difficult to restore the system of weather influence. Only you need to think about the maximum wave height. We will assign for each battle a random interval of the minimum and maximum values. In the interface, a new element appears, which will show the height of the wave.

I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

We have included the effect of weather. Below I posted a screenshot. The height of the wave is 6 feet (1.8 meters). After testing, we will update the game.

Other than the indication of sea state in the UI, is there any visual indication of rough weather and/or seas? Still looks like a bathtub to me...
Title: Re: Clad in Iron: Philippines 1898 recently released
Post by: totemgam on November 26, 2017, 08:23:59 AM
I'm afraid it's a scale problem. The height of the side of the cruiser "Baltimore" in the screenshot is 14.7 feet (4.5 meters). That is, you see waves in real scale. If you expect to see a wave that floods the ship, I'm afraid that before the Great War 1914-18, no one fought in such conditions. Most ocean battleships secondary 5-6in guns battery was at an altitude of a little more than 6,5 feet (two meters) from the waterline. I believe that we do not need to invent anything for entertainment.

Yeah. I'm not looking for Hurricane Sandy. I'm just suggesting that some visual variation in sea and sky state would be a nice feature for players, both present and future.

Oddly enough I happen to like video games to look a bit like a wargame being fought on a table.  Kind of like taking Avalon Hill's Jutland counters and making 3D playing pieces, but still playing on my blue bedspread. lol   Sort of in the way that Toy Soldiers handles things, treating it like "toys".  When things get too dark and moody it gets harder and harder to actually pick out playing pieces without some kind of highlight mechanism.  I guess I like the detail to be in the pieces, the water doesn't even need reflections for me.  I've always felt that video game water was too advanced for the rest of the game atmosphere anyway.

Personally, I can go with one or the other, but not a mix of both. Either go the tabletop route, or don't. In a situation where everything is modeled realistically except the environment, it just seems like an oversight or a cop out.
Title: Re: Clad in Iron: Philippines 1898 recently released

I agree that conventions are permissible for "soldiers on the table," but are not desirable in a serious simulator. In the simulator, I want to see the maximum approximation to reality. In any case, developers are limited by resources. We are not professionals at all. Just 10 years ago at a big Russian forum about the Russo-Japanese war ( http://tsushima.su/forums/ ) we gathered and decided to make a game for ourselves. Here also we do. It is impossible to make money on such games. Everything is done in the time free from family and work. This is a very expensive hobby.

Keep up the good work!

Yes second that. I have purchased all your games as I say there is something about them I really like. My only request would be to extend the damage model a bit to replicate individual gun damage.

I think a lot of people just because they pay for something expect the guys at the other end fill their fireplaces with unwanted dollar bills, when the fact is without people like you doing a lot of work for little return we wouldn't have a hobby in the first place ... certainly not one that deals with obscure early steamship naval warfare. And I extend that across the board for the pure realistc  military war game hobby which is why I tend to react against critics of people like battlefront who are basically just a few guys trying to do the same and critisms that may be justly levelled against a Microsoft simply aren't. Our hobby is maintained by the interest of those building the games not the wealth they do not create.

Keep up the excellent work.

Well - what I mean is that sometimes hits on a ship will destroy a particular gun rather than just cause hull damage.

It is Beverly D'Angelo that has the slight bucked teeth. I think Kim Carnes sang a song called She's Got Beverly D'Angelos Teeth but don't quote me on that.

I bought Clad in Iron. Not a naval guy so honestly, I don't know the difference between a breach and a hole in the ship.

Hey totemgam. A few initial questions.

1) Is there any way to change the font color throughout the game? The grey on black is hard to see.

2) Any way to increase texture size on the strategic map? The pieces get pretty blurry when zoomed even halfway out. Tabletop simulator is far more clear.

3) A setting to increase scroll speed? I can see wearing out a mouse going in and out.

Some suggestions

A mini map that when clicked on zooms to that harbor

A double click on the harbor card zooms to a close setting

An oob showing what and where your ships are

I'm going to mess around with it some more and haven't left the strategic screen yet. It sadly is a little sparse on polish imo.The ship sprites look good. I wish I didnt have to scroll so much to get a closer look though.

All that said, while quickly scanning parts of the manual I can safely say to our friends here on the forums that there is much more to the game than one might think. Some of the presentation is a little rough initially but there seems to be a good amount of depth to the title. I'm going to delve further. There may just be a gem here.

There's certainly more than meets the eye.

1. We will make the gray color lighter. This should help.
2. Statistics Steam shows that a significant part of our players are playing at a screen resolution of 1280x1024 on pretty weak laptops and even tablet computers. Therefore, we tried to use large textures only in the most important models. For example, in the models of ships.
3. I did not understand this moment. I'll post a link to the training video on the interface of the game. You can compare with how everything should work. Please tell us where you have problems with the mouse cursor.

A mini-map is a good idea. I hope that someday we will be able to realize all the important and useful offers of our players. To be honest, there are obviously more of them than our capabilities.
In the mode of manual control of the battle, you can view all the details of each ship.
I understand that the manual is not the most convenient way to understand the rules of the game. So we made a little video.

And this video is in the sim mode of battles.

Im saying that it takes too long to scroll/zoom from low to high and a setting to increase zoom speed would be helpful.

Thanks for your replies.

It looks as if the setting can be changed in Windows by upping the How Many Lines To Scroll Each Time. I had it set at 5 and turned it all the way up to 100 lines just to make it zoom quick enough. I'll just change back when I'm not in game because that is a ridiculously high setting.

This is a very clever decision. We have not faced such a problem before. If there are any other problems, I recommend the following:

1. Find and start a file "Info.exe" in a game folder (example ..\Steam\steamapps\common\Clad in Iron: Philippines 1898\Info.exe).
2. Follow program instructions.
3. Send both files (Totem3Log.log and DxDiag.txt) to the support@totemgames.ru or totemgames.ru@gmail.com

This weekend I took advantage of the 73% off bundle sale. Apparently, if you have at least two titles in your library from the Clad in Iron series, you can buy a bundle with pretty much every title and DLC (except for the most recent Philippines 1898 title) in the series. For only $24 and change, that's a tremendous value.

I'll play around with this for awhile and get Philippines 1898 eventually, as its actually the title that interests me most.

Two questions...

1. Are the older titles kept up-to-date with patching in features that may have been added to the newer games in the series; and
2. What are your plans for the future? What is the next era/war we can expect to see?
Title: Re: Clad in Iron: Philippines 1898 recently released

I need to explain one thing. All our games, except for the Clad in Iron series, were published by Strategy First. At present, we no longer cooperate with them and publish our new games ourselves. Unfortunately, this means that we will not be able to improve the gameplay of old games. But we, as before, provide technical support for the games of the Ironclads series.
For games of the Clad in Iron series, we improve the gameplay and plan to do it further. As I wrote before, now we are working on adding to the game Clad in Iron: Philippines 1898 torpedo weapons and torpedo boats. Once this work is completed, we will update the game (for free). Add destroyers and torpedoes into the game Clad in Iron: Gulf of Mexico 1864 we will not. In 1864 there were no self-propelled mines (torpedo).
We plan that our next project will be a scenario about the Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905. The scale of this scenario depends on the support that Clad in Iron customers will provide. The price of quality 3d models is very high and only the budget will limit our ambitions.
Then there are two points in the "road map". Each of these points is offered by our players. We can improve the strategic part of the game. We plan to add structures that will affect the price and speed of building and repairing units. We also want to add new resources to the game, or rather divide abstract supplies for coal, products, ammunition, money, and so on.
Another group of players wants us to add a mode of custom (skirmish) battles to the game. In this mode we want to collect all our ships. This means that the player will be able to choose any ships, from the very first wooden steamships with "pirate" cannons to high-speed steel destroyers with quick-firing cannons, and compare them in battle with each other.

Steam achievements are now live in Clad in Iron: Philippines 1898!

We have prepared for you a collection of 24 achievements: for the capture of important harbors, for the destruction of the strongest enemy ships, for the successful use of mines and torpedoes, for improving the experience of your infantry and ships.

Now you will be able to track your progress in the game and record important milestones, and also show your level of skill to our gaming community. We hope they will encourage people to get the most from the game!

One of the things that has put me off from this series is the lack of historical scenarios.  The alternate scenarios can be very interesting, but the 19th century and early 20th century subjects are just obscure enough that it's a pain to have to research where the dividing line between history and fantasy actually falls.

Rumors to the contrary, historical wargaming is all about what-ifs.  But to enjoy them, you need to establish a base line.   If you make a game about the opening of the Waterloo campaign, the elephant in the room is what would have happened if Reille's corps had been fully commited at either Quatre Bras or Ligny.  If you only make the two what-if scenarios (full commitment at Ligny and full commitment at Quatre Bras) you leave the player frustrated because there's nothing to compare the what-ifs to.  Similarly, the elephant in the room in that later part of the campaign is what would have happened if Blucher hadn't shown up at Waterloo (or what would have happened if Blucher and Grouchy had shown up at Waterloo).  Once again, if you only make the two what-if scenarios but leave out the historical one, the player can't understand the message because there's no point of comparison.  He also can't get a handle on how accurate and/or credible the game system is.

A lot of people are probably more inclined to buy a game about a history-related subject if they aren't asked to suspend disbelief before they jump in.  What that means in practical terms is that you should include a few historical scenarios, even if the chess problem they present is trivial or the outcome is boring.

Thank you for expressing your opinion. It is worth considering. As for the scenario of this game, the initial overwhelming superiority of the American squadron did not give the Spanish side any chance. In this situation, you can not play for Spain, and playing for America does not present any difficulties. Game theory teaches that in this case it is impossible to make a game. The game is still not just a mechanical routine to destroy a helpless enemy. As far as I remember, only the cruiser Olympia was enough to win the Manila Bay. More than 70 percent of hits in the Spanish ships were on the quick-firing cannon from Olympia.

Given the commitment shown by the developers on here to continuous improvements in this series the discount is a clincher. Off to add it to my steam collection. Love the idea of the WW1 Dover patrol type game suggested. Definitely would prefer to keep it to a small number of light units as I don't think this approach works well for a large battle. I would suggest that quite a number of additional environmental effects would need to be added for atmosphere, not much sun in the north sea!

Just keep in mind that our old games are already very outdated and will no longer be updated. Its not our fault. We have finished cooperation with the Strategy First publishing house, which sells these games. But we provide technical support for old games. If we could, then the old games would be distributed free of charge, but the publisher has a different opinion.

We continue work on torpedo boats and destroyers. Above the 75ft harbor spar torpedo boat Yarrow type. These boats built for the European and South American navies in the 1870s. Below is the same type, but after the modernization of the 1890s. The torpedo boat is armed with a 15in Whitehead self-propelled torpedo and the 3pdr Hotchkiss quick-firing gun.

We have updated our naval wargame Clad in Iron: Gulf of Mexico 1864.

In the turned based strategic mode of the game we have added a new supply system for ships and infantry units.
In real time simulator mode, we added the effect of weather: influence of height of a wave on accuracy of shooting and stability of the ship.
In addition, all the naval units have obtained real historically reliable characteristics of turn, set and loss of speed.

We hope that you will like it.

FWIW the Ironclads 2 series is up on sale at Steam. I've just bought their bundle: Boshin War, Caroline Islands War, American Civil War for about £2.00!!!! :bd: (I already had the Pacific War). You just can't go wrong on the price. Also the game moves on from the original Ironclads game, as you can build armies, do naval landing, build forts, blockade and raid convoys etc - previously the game was very limited mainly to consecutive battles with your squadron.

But why? Is there something wrong with the WARGAMER.COM? I definitely missed something important!

I'm sure that despite all the sort of inside jokes here, you were told by someone in PM way above my pay grade what the issue there was.

I think I say for the all of us that whatever we might yell about, as a dev of a solid game, you're welcome here.

Old news and bad blood that's unrelated to you don't apply.

Again, I'm sure you were told this privately.   But for the rest of us in the public, we deeply appreciate your input and feedback.   I for one am really liking your game.

Thank you all for the clarification.

I'm a historian. I study the history of early civilization, like Sumer or Mycenae. For me, long stories begin before the Bronze Age. Once, on the excavation sites of ancient people, I began to tell something in the presence of my colleagues anthropologists. I started by saying that this is an long story. And then I suddenly realized that in comparison with the times of cavemen it was not so long ago.

Some interface changes in the TBS mode.

We updated the interface on the battle map in strategy mode. Now all slots for ships, infantry or buildings of one side have only one color. In addition, it is now easier to understand which harbor the player controls, and which ones are his computer opponent.

July 17, the Yonhap news agency reported that the South Korean search expedition found and identified the drowned in 1905, the Russian semi armored frigate or cruiser "Dmitry Donskoy".

^Yes files are verified. Different resolutions produce the same results. The only option that makes a difference is running in windowed mode vs. full screen. I would not have an issue with running it in windowed mode if it was centered on the screen, but it's not.

OK a reinstall seems to have fixed the issue partially. On windowed mode, where there are no font issues, I can now center the window to fit my screen, so the game is now playable. Full screen mode still has the fonts displaying as unreadable but I can at least play the game now.

Dear MC,

Find Info.exe program in the folder of the game, like "..\Steam\steamapps\common\Clad in Iron: Philippines 1898". Run program and follow the instruction.
If you not found Info.exe you need to do next:

1. Find in a folder
"C:\Users\Public\Documents\Clad in Iron: Philippines 1898" for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10 or
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Clad in Iron: Philippines 1898" for Windows XP a file "Totem3Log.log"
2. Click to Windows Start button. Choose "Run".
3. In the opened window type: dxdiag , then press the confirmation button (Ok).
4. The program of diagnostics of your computer will open. Save data on the computer in text file.
5. Find problem save files here: "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Clad_in_Iron_Philippines_1898\Saves" (Logical drive "C:" should be system drive).
6. Send all files by means of e-mail to the address support@totemgames.ru or totemgames.ru@gmail.com

I received a suggestion from the developer and that fixed my problem. I can now save a game and load it successfully. I'll include their response here in case someone else runs into this same problem.

Unfortunately this problem is common for Win 10 Intel and GeForce video cards, we trying to fix it all but for current moment you can do next things:
1. Install latest driver, for Win 10 GeForce 1050Ti it fully fixed the problem for loading from game start. Try it please if you have 1060, 1070 or 1080.
2. Reduce the level of water quality for low or medium, problem somehow connected to it. I understand that 1070 and 1080 has a huge video memory on board but still something is not right there.

And of course any information (TotemLog.log and Dxdiag.txt) files appreciated because it could give more information.
Thank you all for your help!

We have begun work on the add-on to the Clad in Iron: Philippines 1898. This addition to the game will be called Clad in Iron: Carolines 1885. Add-On is all new gameplay, completely new or updated 3d models of ships, the use of additional historical information about the forces of opponents in the conflict.

Alternate History Scenario. Germany began her colonial enterprise very late and was, therefore, at a disadvantage, finding all the desirable places already occupie. The Spaniards claimed the Caroline Islands as their colony, but did not actually control them. Germany disputed the Spanish claim. In August, 1885 the German Cruiser Squadron has occupied the Caroline Islands. In reply Spaniards have sent the frigates to Philippines.

Historical Events. https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crisis_de_las_Carolinas

P.S. She has two sisters... Half-sisters... Seniors, you have not yet seen our new frigates  :smitten:

SMS Hansa was a German ironclad warship built in 1868–1875. She was the first ironclad built in Germany; all previous German ironclads had been built in foreign shipyards. She was named after the Hanseatic League, known in Germany simply as Hanse, Latinized Hansa. The ship was launched in October 1872 and commissioned into the German Imperial Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) in May 1875. Designed for overseas service, Hansa was classed as an armored corvette and armed with 21 cm (8.3 in) guns in a central battery.

Not sure.  Most large guns seem to have some kind of critical hit probability, also there can be internal accidents.  Usually the US protected cruisers are pretty safe.

These are the working materials of the new additions to the Clad in Iron: Philippines 1898. This time no alternative history. We will put on the updated strategic map all the units at the beginning of the war and will give new units strictly according to real history.

Now we want the game to start in historically correct conditions (as far as possible). But we do not want to significantly limit further opportunities for the player.

Haven't been following this for a while.  Could you confirm that Manila Bay is an historical scenario and not alternative history ?

If it's real history I'm interested, if alternative history probably not.

(I would also be interested in an historical rendering of the battle of Lissa).

I'm not certain a "historical" Manila scenario would be very interesting... kind of a 'turkey shoot' I believe.

BTW, as a side note, Admiral Dewey's flagship at Manila, the USS Olympia is still afloat. A great museum ship, and one of only a handful of survivors from its era. Olympia is in Philadelphia and is a great sight to see if you are out that way.
