NHL is back, and on-schedule this year!
The 'Canes are playing well in their first game, but Detroit's goalie is playing out of his gourd and keeping the Red Wings in a game they've got no business being in.
What is this "hockey" you speak of? Living in Minnesota, I'm unfamiliar with it.

Well - same old 'Canes... gave up a goal with 16 seconds to go to tie, and then lost in OT.
Detroit's just go too much talent on the ice when they put 6 skaters our there
Is this Ice hockey?
If so, the Newcastle Vipers have disbanded :(
it's not roller hockey! ;)
There are some days when I feel like the 'Canes have disbanded- usually when they're busy tanking and giving away a lead in the 3d Period
Go Bs!
Stamkos for President!!!!! FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Pens! Just need Fleury to bounce back from his absolute collapse in net...that's all...not a big thing, right?
I like hockey. I live in Houston. Not much chance of seeing it here unless it's minor league, but even then it's a hell of a lot of fun!
Blackhawks!!!
it would be nice, just once, if the Hurricanes could actually keep their top 3 lines all healthy at the same time, and hang onto Ward and Gleason at the same time.

So far so good for the Pens, and particularly for Marc-Andre Fleury.

Listen Pittsburgh...I'm glad you're up, but I could do without the goddamn drama every damn game. Thanks.
Nice job, Tampa. Thanks for playing. Or in your case, NOT playing. Bastards.
It would have been nice if Tampa could have won a game or two, instead of letting the Canadiens steamroll them.
I see no reason for Florida to have any hockey teams at all.
Any place south of Colorado really.
To be fair, TB did play without their main goalie (Ben Bishop). I still consider them a way more fun team than the Florida Panthers (never liked that team).
Ouch.... I hate those hits.
I'll be honest, I've watched three or four hockey games since the 'Ning made the Cup run. It's not that I don't like hockey, I just don't have the passion for it like I do baseball or football. If it's any consolation, I haven't watched a NBA game since Shaquille O'Neal was a Magic.

are you shitting me Pittsburgh?!
They were up 4-0 and let CBJ score 3 goals in 6 minutes to get back into it and almost gacked it away. Thankfully they held on to clinch and send Columbus packing.
I was hoping for a Game 7. Columbus didn't show for the first two periods and then played like mad men in the 3rd. And they were in their house. Pathetic.
tampa has a small mix of habs and bruins fans, i didnt think they would care much as i thought this was gator country
Huge win for the Bruins!
Man I'm glad I mixed up the game time today and was still work. Who plays hockey at 2pm??
Looks like Habs f'ed it up today. Prepare for fun times in montreal.

Go Bruins! Go Pens!!!
do you get hemorrhoids riding that fence?
I do not know what fence you speak of? I hate the Canadiens and I hate the Rangers. I want them both to lose and the Bruins and the Penguins are the respective teams they are playing right now. If they both make it to the Conference Finals, then I am rooting for a never ending tie.
Disappointed to see the Pens out, but happy because maybe now the needed organizational changes will happen to help them in the long term.
I'm pissed at the Penguins' inability to close out the Rangers. Lord I hate the Rangers.
The Rangers are my dad and my best friends favorite team. Much as I love them both, I want the Rangers to flame out spectacularly. Unless, of course, the Canadiens beat the Bruins. Then I can safely root for Marty St. Louis and Brad Richards to win another Cup.
Go Habs go! What a series. Don Cherry (Grapes) eat your heart out. Great to see Pacioretty finally shine in game 7. Bring on the Rangers.

The Bruins losing is going to free up some time for drinking and coozehounding.
Lucic sounded really confused in the dressing room post game. I had less trouble figuring out what Chris Nilan says :)
Props to Rask, great goalie, and Chara. They showed class. On the other hand, Less antics from Lucic and Marchand could have made a difference for Boston.
With the current conference layout, we'll see these great rivalries a lot more often in next few years.
Pens need to protect Crosby more in the future.
What the Pens really need is someone who will get in Crosby's face when he starts going off, sort of how Seabrook went up to Toews when he lost it last year and told him to cool off. After that, an actual defensive system would be nice. Oh, and perhaps a real winger for Crosby.
LA is pretty strong, but the Hawks ain't over yet, and I'm looking for the Habs to push up to game 7 and take it :D
well there goes my hockey season :-X
Kudos to both habs and rangers. Playing with your first line goalie knocked out in the first match and with a backup goalie who performed beyond expectations was a feat. Vigneault has done a great job with the Rangers. Really liked both teams style this series.

Nashville is hot, and I think the Leafs are in a funk. Although not as bad as the Laffs, the Habs lost against the
3-4th line of the Penguins, messing up with key giveaways, not really because they failed to shutdown Crosby/Malkin (which is ironic). Nothing to be proud about last night.
I see how the coach brings Malhotra to win the faceoff from Crosby, and then switches him on the bench with Galchenyuk or Gallagher. Malhotra is earning his pay this season!
On side note, I finally got Videotron cable after fighting with Rogers Gamecenter (I gave up - they could not make my subscription work after 5 days). Rogers has a monopoly, but the delivery with this product is terrible.

the highlight of the NHL All-Star was actually when they had a 'trade' during the All-Star draft, and swapped Kessel for Seguin. This is twice now that Kessel has been in the spotlight at the All-Star draft. He was the first "last guy" at the draft in 2011, and now he was the first guy traded at the All-Star draft.

I missed out yesterday but noticed this zinger. Tyler Seguin is the man. Then again, I'm not sure what to make of Kessel. He can be great offensively, but people lament his other skills. I'm not sure if it's a result of the teams failures, his, or all of the above I guess. I think the grilling he got recently in the locker room was a little too much, but he should be able to handle that flak by now.
I think the leafs should consider changing the manager, I don't think the coach is the problem. There will be trouble if trying to offload Kessel ( who wants to pay his salary & Phaneuf's except the Leafs??)

Kessel certainly shouldn't be a team captain or in any sort of leadership/media relations spot on a team, but there aren't a lot of guys who are consistent year to year 40 goal threats. Trading him would be ridiculous, especially since his contract would limit the return quite significantly.
The Leafs need to switch GM's, blow this up and rebuild around a few core guys. They actually have quite a few well regarded prospects on their way, so bite the bullet, dump some stupid contracts for peanuts (Phaneuf, Lupul) and stop pretending that this deeply flawed roster is ever going to amount to success.

'Canes actually won tonight. Most nights they outshoot their opponents something like 38-24 and lose 2-1. Tonight they got a couple of PP goals on the road and won handily...
Another tough night for the canes Brant. 32 shots to 19, 3-1 Devils. Any talk of trades down there?
no, because with a healthy lineup, they're actually pretty competitive. This whole season, though, has been the 'Canes outshooting people 37-18 and then loosing 2-1 or 3-1 w/ an empty net goal.
Jordan was missing for 2-1/2 months and that put them in a big hole. When he came back, they went on a mini-run that almost got them out of last. But Skinner's been hurt, Semin's been hurt, and Gleason's just old, but they're out of options. They need a scoring top-4 defenseman, and another scoring center to run the 2d line w/ Skinner & Semin. The latter they might already have if Lindholm develops quicker, or Riley Nash could find the net. But right now the defense is Justin Faulk and a handful of solid roster-filling journeymen but no one that scares you or stretches a defense.
Interesting. I heard folks are eying Tlusty, McClement, Sekera
Tlusty will be a pure rental. He's already told his agent to get a long-term deal done in Raleigh b/c he wants to live here long-term.
Sekera could bring some nice parts back. McClement is a solid guy, but unlikely to become more than a third-line guy in the long run. If he can bring a solid return, I'd take it.
Sekera is a classic example of what Carolina has too many of: solid-but-not-dominant-high-character guys. They'll play hard and work hard and represent your organization very impressively in the community. But without someone else around them to light up the game, they are unlikely to impress on the ice. They're the guys that'll fill out the roster and not screw up, but they won't take over and win anything either. The roster is full of them: Hainsey, Liles, Gleason, Dwyer, Rask, Murphy, etc. And they've been that way for years, with guys like Seidenberg, Allen, Cullen, Cole, LaRose, Aaron Ward, Kaberle, Ruutu, Jokinen, Sutter, Harrison, Corvo, Walker...
The Toledo Walleye beat Gwinnett Gladiators 12-0 yesterday.

Of course it did. They're the Oilers! Seriously, they're hilariously bad...and yet also hilariously overrate their supposed 'talent' level. It's a constant source of humor when you live near the team and yet don't cheer for them.
FWIW, only one franchise in NHL history has a 400-goal season for the entire team. The Oilers did it 4-5 straight seasons back in the 80s and no one has ever done it before / since.

See, when quotes like this regularly come from Oilers management in some pathetic attempt to ignore the current state of things (of course, many of them were there...the new owner is desperately trying to collect the whole set of 'heroes of the eighties' action figures), it's a lot less impressive. And funnier! ;D

WTF!?! :tickedoff:
Someone should advise Tampa not to piss off all the Canadians in Florida.
The restriction on the sale of the tickets is done elsewhere during the playoffs (Montreal, Ottawa, etc). Whatever I can watch the game at a bar or at home.
But this whole jersey issue is BS. Are teams really doing this now? It's been a while since I've been to a live game during the playoffs. Since when can anyone tell you what jersey you can wear? Man even the sods in Beantown were classier, and I co-existed with Bruins fans several times.
Go Habs Go. If the Lightning do end up getting past Price, all the best to them. They are a great team, and I want a team that can kick the crap out of the Rangers if they move past the Caps (I can't stand Kreider - dude needs to get suspended for the kamikaze hits on goalies).
I don't think I'm capable of rooting for the Habs. However, the main thing is that someone does kick the crap out of the Rangers.

Where ever this ticket sales restriction is done, it is wrong (IMHO). I can see limiting ticket sales to a maximum # per person, so as to curb scalping- but why give a shit where someone lives!!!
Bad form, poor sportsmanship, etc. :tickedoff:
As for the jersey issue, if it is a matter of public safety (as in don't wear enemy colours if you value your continued good health), then fine; say that and be done with it. You were fairly warned. But to ban someone from being fully clothed wearing the colours of a visiting team???!!! Bullshit I say, BULLSHIT! :tickedoff:
I can't honestly say that I gave much of a crap about the outcome of this series until now. But, now I'm all about the red, white and blue for liberty and justice!!! :coolsmiley:

Screw that! I hate the Habs. And I picked Tampa in the work playoff pool. They can require every fan to dress up like a furry for all I care...just win me my damn money! ;D

Agree 100%.
Y'all Tampa boys played a great game, 1st two periods were hard to watch.
The lead up to the Eastern Conference finals should be interesting. I for one hope that Ovie & and Caps clock the crap out of the Rangers; Lightning/Caps would be an interesting series.
Keep in mind the Rangers have never lost a game 7 at home.... they're 6-0 at MSG in game 7s
Caps should've closed them out when they had the chance!
I'm not a huge Rangers fan, but I've never liked the Caps. And as well as Holtby has played this year, I'd be a Hell of a lot more confident if I had Lundqvist behind me in goal in a game 7.
What's with all the Rangers hate?

What's with all the Rangers hate?
As a Bruins fan, I am hardwired to hate the Rangers. As a New Englander, I tend to hate New York teams in general.
As a general rule, the New York fans are grouped thus:
Yankees, Knicks, Giants and Rangers
or
Mets, Nets, Jets and Islanders.
One group contains (mostly) winners and is generally despised by all the loser hacks out there who wish they had the testicular fortitude to man up and join the winners. The others root for the Mets, Nets, Jets and Islanders.

Hard to blame Holtby. The dude made 37 saves in a road playoff game 7.
After seeing the Kreider Krap throughout the playoffs (and last years playoffs), I'm hoping a ref wakes up and kicks him out at one point.
That being said, GO LIGHTNING!
YES! Go Lightning!!
So much for Ovechkin guaranteeing a win. Stupid loser Capitals. >:(
Awesome defense by the Rangers. I didn't see a Lightning player in the crease for more than half a second all game. We'll get'em next game!
Hang in there, Lightning will strike O0
If my prayers were to get answered, the Montreal GM (Bergevin would have tried to get rid of the current coach (Therrien), and made a big effort to attract Babcock to the team. With Babcock in place, I really feel he would advise the GM on future acquisitions to make the team succeed. Sadly this wasn't the case today, and the GM is defending the currrent coach. I don't forsee big changes soon ..(although Gonchar, Maholtra, Weaver are gone).

Lunqvist goes down in a Game 7! At MSG no less!!!
Well done Bishop!

+1 Nice to see a UMaine alum heading to the Cup Finals
Excellent article about the guy that might have been the smartest player in the game

It's never a good sign when they cheer for the visitors louder than the home team. Bastards.
GO BOLTS!!
Go Lightning!!!!
w00t! w00t!
Hell yeah!
I am going to defer to those who watch much more hockey than I do and ask, are the Blackhawks giving the Lightning the business? Or am I just biased and Tampa is doing it, too? I am usually too engrossed in watching the puck to concentrate on off point happenings, but, it seems like when something other than the biscuit catches my attention, it's someone in a red sweater crosschecking when the ref isn't watching. Or sticking a blade in a skate. Having a handful of jersey or pushing a guy down from behind. The commentators seemed to think Brad Richards blatant hold of the Tampa players stick during Saad's game winner to be normal and a good play. I don't watch much hockey, so maybe I'm just unaware of what passes for 'within the bounds of fair play,' but it seems that Chicago is engaging in some fairly obvious and repeated rule breaking and not getting caught/called on it.

Playoff hockey tends to be more lenient of small infractions that during the regular season. And the truth is, if every single penalty was called by the book in a hockey game, it would be a never-ending spiel of whistles blowing.
Chicago probably is engaging in a bit more extra-curricular activity around the play. They're the bigger team, and they have the postseason experience to know what they can get away with.
I've watched enough sports to know that there is times to blow the whistle and times to swallow it. This series is no different. I guess what I was asking is, does anyone else see this? Because it's really beginning to piss me off. To the point that I'll be really mad if Chicago takes the Cup. Not that it will do me any good, but, I will be less inclined to tell anyone what a great game I think hockey is. And now that it has been supplanted by college football in the American consciousness, hockey can't afford people bad mouthing it.
Seems like Bishop may be coming unglued
http://tampa.suntimes.com/tpa-sports/7/85/182990/ben-bishop-too-loud
I do have a bit of sympathy for Bishop. It's got to be terrible that the home crowd is louder for the Blackhawks than for the Lightning. Doesn't explain the goal he lets in, but, I'd be disappointed to hear, "LET'S GO HAWKS," louder than, "LET'S GO BOLTS!"
Chicago all the way! Original Six man!
:D
John Oliver on a "scandal," in Canada over misappropriation of funds, "Canada. Five hockey rinks surrounded by bears." So what I'm saying is, whilst I respect your hockey knowledge, BUGGER OFF AND TAKE THE BLACKHAWKS WITH YOU!!!!!!!
GO LIGHTNING!!!
I'll take them tonight after they take the cup! :D
Congratulations to the Blackhawks. They are a talented bunch who played hard and made the plays when they needed to. And Crawford is a WITCH!
Was really hoping to see someone new take the Cup this year. But this is likely to be Chicago's last kick at the can for a short while, seeing as their current cap situation is going to leave them selling off roster parts at bargain prices.
Good job, Blackhawks. It's been an impressive run of Cup wins.
Ugh, that was painful :P
unpinning. will open next year's thread later :)
And now the dark times start in professional sports. Two months of just MLB.
isn't MLB exciting enough? O:-)

I suspected the team had some Canucks on there, and I was right. A lot of them come from Canada, and the coach is George Laraque O0

It couldn't possibly be as painful as watching the Hawks pre 2007... it was ugly.

Same stuff said in 2010 ( in hindsight that was mistaken). Every team that operates near the top of the cap ends up in the same position and are faced with re-inventing their lineup.
Might as well go for the hat trick since I am apt to forget about this thread for awhile ... after paging through the past 3 or 4 pages ... really interesting all Eastern Conference stuff.
At some point I guess you'll have to admit to the West winning the past 3 Stanley Cups and 5 of the last 6 Stanley Cups has some sort of meaning, even if only to the point where the West matters.
It will be interesting to see how Chicago is able to structure their line up, as it still is up in the air (slightly) at the moment. They have a pretty interesting set of forwards if one assumes Krueger is signed, and even if Sharp, Bickell, and Versteeg were to be moved or even any combination of the those three. Moving Saad opened up a lot of possibilities, particularly in light of the Panarin signing earlier in the year.
I don't know what they'll do, and Quenneville usually has a really short leash for rookies -although it is pretty tough to argue against the success he has had as a coach (I might even put it at being impossible).
Alexander Semin joins the Habs for one year not sure about this one...
keep him on one-year deals. As long as it's a contract year, he'll play great
Yep. So long as the guy is motivated by needing to earn his next contract, he's pretty good.
Brant, can we sticky this threat? Hockey season is starting this week :D
You wanna start one for this season? We'll sticky that.
Ok can do.
