Steel Beasts Pro by EsimGames

Hi fellow Grogheads

I am creating this thread for Steel Beasts Pro (PE) by EsimGames. Steel Beasts Pro is a niche simulation and hopefully people will contribute to this thread. Everyone is welcome to post any questions, answers, hints, tips, events..etc in this thread so as to keep all the info in one place. Some of the information in this thread is taken directly from the official site.

"Steel Beasts is a virtual simulation of contemporary armored and mechanized combat, using combined arms and focusing on small-unit tactics. It models individual weapon systems in detail, yet is able to keep track of several company teams in a single scenario."

Armour Model

Unlike most other games, Steel Beasts does not use a hitpoint system. Instead it uses a complex model that takes into consideration armour angles, armour thickness, and then calculates whether a round penetrates or not. If a round does not penetrate, it will not cause damage. However, if the round does penetrate, depending on the surface that is hit, a variety of damages will ensue. On the inside of each vehicle, all of the most important components are located, such as crew, turret drives, fuel tanks, ammunition, radios, engine, gearbox, etc. SB also has surfaces that will never cause damage to the tank, as damage to things like stowage boxes, external stowage, and such would be merely cosmetic.

Version

There are 2 versions of Steel Beasts Pro. Pro and Pro Personal Edition (PE). This thread will deal with the personal edition.

Version Differences & Intended Use:

SB Professional: Training of soldiers in a (networked) simulation lab under the direction of an operator / controller.

SB Pro PE: Training of soldiers on their personal PCs using exercises that do not require an operator / controller.

SB Pro has all the features of SB Pro PE – plus these:

Unlimited network clients – SB Pro PE is limited to 8.
    Customization Available (for a fee)
Instructor (O/C) Mode with free-flight camera
    Advanced AAR Features
Map Creation/Import (DTED and Shape Files)
Larger Mission Areas (limited only by RAM) – SB Pro PE is limited to approximately 20x20km²
    Manual Ballistics Deviations

Documentation

Manual attached
There are many documents included in PDF and Word format. several languages are supported. They can be found in the "\eSim Games\SB Pro PE\docs" folder (main install directory). The main manual is 145 pages long. If you want a hard copy you can print the PDF or order a copy from esim games (extra cost). Why not load the PDF on a Tablet? There are technical as well as tutorial documents included. A Keyboard chart is also included. Also refer to the Steel Beasts Wiki for excellent documentation. See reply 866 here: http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=10673.855

Manual = 145 pages
Keyboard Chart = 1 page

System Requirements

Steel Beasts Professional Personal Edition (PE)  requires an IBM compatible PC (x86 or x64) with the following minimum configuration: (Recommended specs are in parentheses.)

2.5 (3.5) GHz CPU (Multiple Cores Recommended)
    2 (4) GB RAM
256 (1024) MB dedicated video RAM, Nvidia GeForce 5+ Class (DirectX9 compatible card (with Shader Model 3.0 or higher)) or
256 (1024) MB dedicated video RAM, ATI Radeon 9600+ (DirectX9 compatible card (with Shader Model 3.0 or higher))
    Sound card
Some users have reported success with more recent Intel graphics chipsets (GMA X4500+), however, they have not been tested and are not specifically supported.
3 (5) GB available hard disk space
Free USB port for CodeMeter stick
    Mouse
    DVD drive
Microsoft Windows XP SP3+ / Vista / 7 /  8  (Steel Beasts will NOT run on Windows NT.)
Microsoft DirectX version 9.0c (or better) installed. Vista/7/8 users must install DirectX 9.0c in parallel to DirectX 10/11, which comes standard with these operating systems.

DirecctX 9 Here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

For better playing experience, a joystick is recommended. Network game sessions obviously require an internet connection or TCP/IP based local area network. Permanent licenses for Steel Beasts Professional PE rely on a hardware device (a USB CodeMeter stick) for software protection (part of shipment).  For this a free USB port is required. Time-based licenses for Steel Beasts Pro PE may be installed without a CodeMeter stick.

License

A license is required to play Steel Beasts. There are 2 types of licenses. A Classic license and a Time-Limited License

SB Pro PE v3.0, "Classic" License
Unlimited license duration
    Uses CodeMeter stick. (USB Dongle)
License for stick will be sent separately by email.
Software can be downloaded or DVD ordered below.
Software includes electronic User's Manual, or hard copy can be ordered below.
You can play older versions of SB.

SB Pro PE v3.0, Time-Limited License
License expires!
    No shipping time
No CodeMeter stick needed; license is bound to PC
Limited to single license per PC

Pricing

Heres the official site that you can purchase from http://www.esimgames.com/?page_id=1361
1 Month = $9.50
4 Months = $24.50
One year = $39.50

But unlike the dongle these licenses are limited to a single pc. Also if the license is valid during the release of a paid update (approx once every 18 months) then you will not have to pay extra. Your license will allow you to use the current version. Just download the update and you are good to go.

Monthly subscription has NO dongle. The security is software based.

Base with dongle is = $115 and paid updates are $25 - $40 (approx every 18 months) all other updates are free.

Updates
This is what you pay for but it only applies to the USB lifetime Dongle license. Time limited licenses do not pay for ANY updates.
Bug /issue Fixes = Free
Beta = Free
New Content/Major engine Update (approx every 15-18 months) = $25 - $40

You do not need to update your version however for on line play everyone must be on the same version.
You can still play older versions i.e. if you have v3.011 you can still play v2.654.

From Esims (Ssnake)18/08/14 The question of update pricing/frequency.

"We had a long hiatus after the initial release of version 2.251 in 2006 where the first "for pay" upgrade was in 2009 with version 2.460. From then on it was an approximate 15 months period for the 2.5 and 2.6 upgrades respectively, 3.0 took us then almost two years to complete.
We have come to the conclusion that the old 12...18 months pace can no longer be maintained. The new upgrade frequency will be in the 18...24 month bracket. Summer 2015 would be the earliest date, but I think it's rather going to be the fourth quarter of 2015.
There are a number of substantial code changes going on at the moment and not so much the addition of new equipment. Of course we want to release upgrades that offer significant new tactical stuff for the user to play around with, and not just "new simulation under the hood" with no appreciable change from the end-user's perspective (even if those changes under the hood may be infinitely more important in the long run)."

Customer Support
Customer support is excellent from Esims. I have had prompt replies on every occasion i have contacted them. No complaints here. Esim Games is a small company (less than 10 people) that has been around since 1999 and are here for the foreseeable future.

DRM.......................

The DRM for the lifetime license is via a Dongle.
The dongle must be inserted at all times in order to play. There is an exception to this however. You are able to share your license over a lan or the internet. So you can remotely access your license from a different pc. One license per active game. The Dongle must be inserted into an active pc but Steel Beasts does not need to be running to allow someone/another pc to access the license. There is no Activation/Deactivation cycle.

The Dongle can hold upto 8 licenses which can be shared over a lan or internet.

Replacement Dongle
If it is broken, damaged or stops working then you can get a replacement dongle from Esims for $30-$35 but you must return the damaged one even if it is in pieces.

Official Codemeter site codemeter.com
Latest dongle fimware http://codemeter.de/us/service/downloads.html

The attachment shows a Code meter dongle. The one you receive may look slightly different.

You are officially free to sell or transfer the Dongle to any person you choose.

You can install the Steel Beasts software on any number of PC's. However that PC must have access to the license either by:
1.   Having the USB Dongle plugged in to the machine you are running the software on.
2.   Having access to a license over a Lan.
3.   Having access to a license over the internet. See here : http://www.steelbeasts.com/sbwiki/index.php/License_Sharing

The DRM for time limited licenses uses "virtual container". It is the same software that your dongle uses but the license resides on the pc it was activated on and cannot normally be moved.

Moving the time limited license (does NOT apply to Dongle)

PC stolen/lost ?Then License is Lost

Moving to a new pc? Not possible (but a workaround exists, see below).

Create a backup of C:\ProgramData\CodeMeter\CmAct
This  folder  contains  the  encrypted  license  files.  If you simply
reinstall  Windows  you can restore this folder after reinstalling the
CodeMeter runtime, and things SHOULD work normally - provided that you
didn't  change the Windows registration code along with other hardware
elements that the CodeMeter runtime uses to verify the validity of the
license.
We're  tracking  a  fingerprint of five elements, e.g. network adapter
MAC  address,  harddisk  serial number, CPU ID; three of the five must
remain the same not to render the license invalid.

If  you are planning to replace the PC, it's best to time the purchase
of  the  new hardware with the expiration date of the license. If that
isn't possible, you can still configure the old PC as a license server
in the "Configuration | Network Server" tab of the CodeMeter WebAdmin.
The  new PC can then borrow its license from the old PC, provided that
they are connected vial network.

Installing License

When you install the Steel Beasts Programme The Codemeter software is installed. This is needed for a time limited license as well as the Dongle.

Next stage is the installation of the license. This is done by email. When you purchase the license (Dongle or time) you will receive an email with an activation link. Do the following:

Dongle License.
Make sure dongle is plugged in and hit the "activate" button in the email you receive and wait. The license is being transferred to your Dongle. It will tell you when it is done. It is now ready and has a license on the Dongle. Plug it into any pc that has a Steel Beasts install and you are ready to go.

Time limited license.
You will activate this on the PC that you installed the Steel Beasts/Codemeter programme. "Activate" the license in the email and it will install into a "virtual" container" (virtual dongle) within the Codemeter programme. Wait until the activation process has completed. You are ready to go.

Upgrading from Time limited license to Dongle
Plug the Dongle into the PC that has the Steel Beasts/Codemeter programme installed and follow instructions for "Dongle License" above. You do NOT have to un-install the Time Limited License.
Dongle.

Getting Started

1. In the main menu. Select "record" and pick a user name. This is very important because it builds up a service record.

2. Start with the installed tutorials. Pick ONE vehicle and stick with it until you are comfortable. The Leo 2A5 is popular as is the M1A1. The Leo tutorial contain 23 separate tutorials. You will not have to do 23 for each vehicle as many of the tutorial are generic. Fire control and systems do vary so you want to pay attention. Pick ONE first and have at it.

3. Tank range/Gunnery score. Once you know the basics you can move on to the Tank range. It is very important you get some practice in here as your score here will dictate how the AI on your side will do. Say you have a terrible score on the tank range and you are the Tank Commander of your tank. The AI will assume the gunner position and fire. The AI uses your Tank Range score here so if you have a high score the gunner will be a better shot. You can do the Tank Range as many times as you wish. Your score can only increase not decrease. So if one day you have a bad session on the range your skill will not be affected. Practice, practice, practice..

Your score on the range is used like this:

For offline: It affects the friendly AI

For Online: All AI have the same score of 75%. This includes enemy and friendly (though sometimes you wouldn't think it ;) )

However something to remember. When you take control of the gunners position on and off line the only thing that matters is how you perform at that moment. Your previous gunnery score is not used.

Difficulty Setting
the chosen difficulty level will influence how quickly targets will be recognised. (on "Easy" your own  units  will  receive  a bonus in alertness and reaction speed, on "Hard" difficulty the enemy will be faster to react. Targets will be prioritised by their threat level. The threat level is a  function of armament, range, whether a unit moves or is stationary, and whether it's located to the front, flank, or rear.

Realism Settings
This setting activates assists for the player. These help in your situational awareness. These are some of the assists:
•   Crosshair to estimate where the gun is pointing when overriding the gunner in the M1.
•   Direction indicators for map reference points.
•   The laser tag marker on the map.
These helpers will disappear as the realism level is increased.

Control Setup

There are several ways to control steel Beasts Pro. You can easily setup your controls by accessing the "Controls" menu within SB. You have many choices. This menu gives you the ability to assign vehicle specific commands how you want to:

SB Controls menu

Your input choices are:
•   Keyboard + Mouse
•   Joystick
•   Other Input Device

Keyboard and Mouse
The keyboard and mouse is extremely popular and if you have used a PC for gaming in the past you will be comfortable. I use this method and find it accurate and simple to use. Below is a keyboard chart. You can reconfigure the keys as you wish.

Steel Beasts keyBoard Chart

Joystick
You can use a joystick. Some players use sticks with many buttons and allocate the different controls to these buttons. This works very well. The X52 from Saitek is a stick which would give you good control as well as the flexibility to assign commands/controls to the various buttons.

Other
There are companies that provide Hardware that is a close copy of the real controls within the vehicles. Here is one such company.
http://www.afvsim.com/

Leopard-2-Gunners-Control-Handle

Leopard-2-Commanders-Control-Handle

You could also manufacture your own device using a usb joystick card. If you are new to SB then i would recommend you try the mouse + keyboard combo first. You already have it and many find it the number one choice. Ultimately use what works best for you.

Tips/Tactics etc..

Some things to remember:
•   The terrain is your friend. Use it.
•   Make like water. Stick to the low ground.
•   Smoke a life saver. Use it. However you will announce your position to everyone so move.
•   Do NOT sit in one spot, especially after you have fired. You may have been spotted.
•   Use your friendly vehicles to cover you.
•   Dismounting the APC troops at the right time can make all the difference.
•   Situational awareness is very important. Know where you, the enemy and friendly units are.

Map Navigation

Each square is 1Km

It is a good idea to take a look at the map before the mission starts

2D map:
Contour line spacing: This can only be changed during the planning phase.
Options>Contour line spacing>select value
Zoom: Mouse wheel or "Map Zoom" slider
Moving around: Press & Hold centre mouse button or keyboard arrow keys.
Battle Plan: Right click.New Graphic
Free View in 3D view:Very handy to explore the 3D terrain but only works during the planning phase.  F1 key or selecting "view" by right clicking the map , you can go to anyplace on the map during the battle and navigate using the WASDX & QZ keys, and arrow keys to pan. Also the mouse can be used.
Lost: Cant find where you are on the map? Right click the map.Center on me
Cant find team mates?: Select participants on the map tool bar and select the team mate.

AAR Tool
There is a very powerful tool in Steel Beasts which allows you to see the AAR. It can be saved and viewed later. It shows information like:
Where you were hit.
Who/what hit you.

Screen Shots
Screen shots are taken by pressing "shift + F12". The resulting image is saved in the "C:\Users\XX\Documents\eSim Games\Steel Beasts\savedImages" where "XX" is the username. The images are saved in folders which are created automatically by date.

Pressing "Alt+H" removes the GUI and makes the screen shot look "cleaner".

You can take screen shots from the ARR.

Infantry Demo

Here's a demo for infantry http://www.steelbeasts.com/Downloads/p13_sectionid/258/p13_fileid/2544

Infantry mount/dismount DEMO (3.002)
Description: This scenario demonstrates the new mount/dismount behavior of infantry, and how to get infantry to do just about anything you want them to do in regards to mounting, dismounting, and moving along routes with and without their parent PCs.

All you need to do is run the demo and watch in test mode (time acceleration is probably good), then if you see them do some behavior you like just evaluate the condition and settings on their routes and duplicate that in your scenario.

Screen Shots
We all like screen shots. The below options can be used to tailor the shot. If you are running with low shadows etc due to your pc then you can temporarily increase the settings to take the shot. When done reduce the settings.

Alt+H = removes GUI
Alt+G = Graphics settings
Alt+D = Terrain detail distance

You can also take shots from the AAR after the battle is over. This will let you create a visual representation of the battle. In this situation you can use the "zoom" function. You can take your time and find a great angle and zoom level.

It is a good idea to have gone through all of the tutorials for at least 1 vehicle.

Etiquette
The main lobby. This is where you will appear when you log in. You can chat to people here and ask for help. Games are not played here they are played in the various rooms or virtual units. The Steel Beasts community is generally friendly but there may be the odd  :crazy2: . It is generally a respectful environment. it's not like COD or other online games as this community is more mature. Introduce yourself. Tell them you are new if you are and what experience you have. The rest is easy. Same with entering a virtual unit room. Do not jump in and start demanding a game. They may be in the middle of a session. Just say hi and wait :) .

The VU or meeting will have a time listed. Do NOT be late. Try and be there at least 15 minutes early.

pm me if you would like to meet up on Teamspeak or if you have any questions drop them here on this thread.

According to their order page, you can upgrade to 3 from any 2.x version for $40.

From the order page:
Upgrade License
Requires CodeMeter stick with valid SB Pro PE 2.x license already present.

Download is available (that is how I got mine) and I believe a DVD version is available but costs an extra $7 (not sure about shipping costs).

Hi jomni

As Grim.reaper said.

You have the v2.4 so all you need to do is purchase the upgrade license for $40. "Upgrade License
Requires CodeMeter stick with valid SB Pro PE 2.x license already present." see attachment.

You will receive an email that tells you how to install the license. Simple click of the mouse really. You may need to update the firmware on the dongle through its icon on the taskbar. I will put some pics up soon.

Thanks.  eSim support immediately replied to my queries.  That's good. :)

A warning for those stuck in version 2.4 like me:
They mentioned that the version coming in 2015/16 will only be compatible to from version 2.5 (the previous paid upgrade).

So better upgrade this year to avoid buying the whole thing again.

Hi.  I am now using 2.483.  What is the upgrade path to 3.000?
And does that mean I will be given a DVD?  Is download available?
Hi jomni

As Grim.reaper said.

Link to official store http://www.esimgames.com/?page_id=1361
You have the v2.4 so all you need to do is purchase the upgrade license for $40. "Upgrade License
Requires CodeMeter stick with valid SB Pro PE 2.x license already present." see attachment.

You will receive an email that tells you how to install the license. Simple click of the mouse really. You may need to update the firmware on the dongle through its icon on the taskbar. I will put some pics up soon.
