Title: Age of Wonders LoTR Mod
Post by: FarAway Sooner on January 01, 2020, 04:21:42 PM
So, in the past on this forum, I've heard a number of you rave about how great the LoTR mod is for Age of Wonders, and I see a bunch of those AoW games on deep discount on Steam.  Unfortunately, I can't remember which game the mod you all loved was for, or if it's compatible with whatever I'd buy on Steam?

Googling led me to about 40 different LoTR mods for AoW, AoW:SM, and AoW3, but I'm struggling to find the right mod for the right game.  So I have 3 questions:

I love the PBEM functionality in the AoW games.  It's among the most flexible and accommodating in the PC gaming world for co-op play.  But it's limited by the number of good multiplayer scenarios.

If anybody knows what I'm talking about, give a shout!  Thanks.

I think Jason Pratt is the person you need to ask.

I tried one - and disliked (and forgot about it).

The one we've always talked about is the mod for AoW2: SM. Try ModDB.

This (very primitive) link has more info:

I went to ModDB and literally the only SM mod remaining there was a Stargate mod (of all things).

Here's the SM list of LotR mods at AoW2heaven (a very classic database, which includes work for AoW:SM the more upgraded AoW2 game): http://aow2.heavengames.com/downloads/lister.php?search=lord+of+the+rings

The current best War of the Ring scenario is probably BlackRose's: http://aow2.heavengames.com/downloads/showfile.php?fileid=386&ci=08e5e4eb8f34ab4969baf1da3e833c3aYToxOntpOjA7YToyOntpOjA7czoxNDoiU2VhcmNoIFJlc3VsdHMiO2k6MTtzOjQ3OiJsaXN0ZXIucGhwP3N0YXJ0PTAmYW1wO3NlYXJjaD1sb3JkIG9mIHRoZSByaW5ncyI7fX0=

...who also uploaded a slightly smaller one for the Battle of Azanulbizar: http://aow2.heavengames.com/downloads/showfile.php?fileid=399&ci=08e5e4eb8f34ab4969baf1da3e833c3aYToxOntpOjA7YToyOntpOjA7czoxNDoiU2VhcmNoIFJlc3VsdHMiO2k6MTtzOjQ3OiJsaXN0ZXIucGhwP3N0YXJ0PTAmYW1wO3NlYXJjaD1sb3JkIG9mIHRoZSByaW5ncyI7fX0=

I suspect these are as mp compatible as any normal scenario. These are the classic mods you've probably heard other Grogheads talk about!

Great stuff, Jason, thanks!  I've now picked up the updated version of AoW:SM off Steam for $2 and downloaded one or two of the LOtR scenarios.  Given how many games I've picked up this holiday season, I might not be able to play it for 6 months, but at least I have it!   ;D

Much appreciated, muchacho.

Well, after futzing around with the Steam version of the game for most of the night, I was not able to get the mod working.  I'm not sure if it's because the Steam Custom Resources functionality is locked down, or if it's simply that the mod claims to only be compatible with v1.2 and Steam defaults to installing v1.3, but I had to give it up and ask for a refund.

The irony is, I have the original game and could install it from my CD (yes, it's that old).  But the friends I'd really like to play this mod with don't have a copy of the CD and would have to play with the Steam version.

Oh well, someday...

My guess is that the version 1.2 requirement is the problem.

A lot of SM users not only go with the official update, but also at least one level of basic fan updates. But that would break this mod functionality seems like.

Yeah, that was kind of what I'd gathered!  Oh well...
