Title: Saving army file
Post by: Mickey3D on August 17, 2018, 04:19:39 PM
Currently there are a "Save Army File -> Default.xml" and a "Save Army File As" menu items.

Once a file has been saved for the first time (or if it is a loaded file), it would be nice to have a "Save Army File" to save on the current file name.

Also, keyboard shortcuts would be nice (typically Ctrl-S to save).

I'm reading the wiki now (should have done it before…) :

Quote
Save Army File
This will automatically save the OOB that you're working on with the previously saved filename.

But in my case what is displayed on the screen is different, see the attached file.

We've not changed the wiki yet.
In fact I just changed how that menu looks so it'll be different again.

Shortcut keys are implemented using Alt.
Which is standard for windows app
Hold the Alt key down and you'll see underlines appear.
Saving a new file as Default.xml or an existing file back over itself is therefore:
Alt+F
Alt+S

( Which is how notepad or word and various other windows apps work. )

Yes, Alt key is used for shortcuts opening menus.

But Ctrl (Control) key is used for direct shortcuts on the action (e.g. Ctrl-S = Save, Ctrl-X = Cut, Ctrl-V = Paste, …). I.e. the menu is not opened.

I realize I have not explained my problem well in the first post of this thread.

Here is what I'm doing:

1) File -> New Army
2) Do some changes
3) File -> Save Army File As -> Test1.xml
4) Do other changes
5) File -> Save Army File -> I don't see the name of my file Test1.xml ! -> I have to use the "Save Army File As"

Ahh I see.
I'll take a look at that.

It's working fine  \m/ but still not possible to save without going first through the File menu (Ctrl-S not active).

Alt+f then Alt+s
Menu commands use Alt rather than Ctrl.

This is windows standard.
Our app underlines the shortcut keys as you press Alt.

Andy, I hope you won't be offensed by my insistency, but have a look at any Windows program (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Notepad, Wordpad, Paint, ...) : all of them have a Ctrl-S shortcut allowing direct save without going through the menu.

I agree, you have the same result with Alt-f + Alt-s and it will work perfectly fine. It's just that I think Windows users are used to the Ctrl-S shortcut the same way everybody is used to Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V to copy and paste.

Note on the attached screenshot: "Enregistrer" means "Save" in French.

Kind of the idea of this open test / input is to improve the product and it's usability.
So I appreciate any input of any sort.
Thanks for spending the time and effort.

I've never noticed that and it's very easy to do, so I've added Ctrl + s.
Next drop.... once Ezra tests.
