Title: The Last Kingdom
Post by: bob48 on October 16, 2015, 05:26:46 AM
The BBC adaptation of the Bernard Cornwell 'Saxon Stories' series of books begins next week, so we're looking forwards to watching that.

Agreed. Its as if they wanted to get the early stuff out of the way so that they could get to the more interesting bits quicker.

..did you enjoy yer Chinese takeaway, Geek?

Any thoughts on this one so far?  Am wondering if I'd want to pick this up for the inevitable disk release, or if I'm just better off sticking with the books.

I've watched the first four.  They are really flying through the storyline.  It means that a huge amount of content has been cut from the books.  It's OK but I think it might be a little too disjointed for someone who hasn't read the books.
Title: Re: The Last Kingdom
Post by: undercovergeek on November 07, 2015, 06:46:29 PM
ive enjoyed the last 2 more than the first 2 as the meat of the story gets underway - one thing i remember from the books is that Ubba and Guthrum are supposed to be some proper ***ked up Vikings, proper crazy ass blood lust loonies - im not getting that from the programme - and in essence the baddies arent 'baddie' enough - Ubba is almost likeable, like the Honey Monster

the book also gives you the chance to see the turmoil Uhtred goes through deciding to fight for Alfred or the Danes, then back again - the programme just makes him look like a side switching git to me

They seem to have cut quite a bit out.  Where's Steappa, Odda's giant lout?  And the Welsh priest who's name I can't remember.

EDIT: Father Pearlig!  I think that was his name.  And Father Willibald as well.  Did they just omit him and combine his character with Beocca?
Title: Re: The Last Kingdom
Post by: bob48 on November 08, 2015, 05:54:14 AM
It looks good, but I think it would be more enjoyable for people who have not read the books. As pointed out above, they do seem to be flying through the story and some interesting characters seem to have been left out.

Hmm.  Sounds like I'm probably better off just sticking with the books, at least at this point.  Thanks fellas.  :)

The first season is on Netflix, now.

I had missed some of the earlier episodes so never quite followed through last year, wanting to watch them in order.

Enjoying it!

I see the second season is/has started?

Having decided to go to bed early and watch a little tv before sleep, I put on Netflix to look for something to watch.  I came across The Last Kingdom and it looked interesting.  Now, not having read the books, I can only post my impressions based on what I watched.  And hot DAMN if it wasn't some GREAT television!!  Best I've seen since Sons Of Anarchy went off the air.  Eight episodes was nowhere NEAR enough and I eagerly await the upcoming season.  Can't get here fast enough.

I found this on the Netflix too...added it to my 75+ show to-watch list.

Put it at the top of the queue.  Watch the first episode.  If that doesn't make you want to immediately watch the other seven episodes, then remove it from the queue entirely.

The books are so good I've held off on watching the series, but no more. Of course, I just finished Westworld so I'm running a little behind on my binge watching.

I was super bummed to find out that a second season isn't going to happen until this year.  I am hoping it's available on Netflix as soon as it gets done with its BBC run.

No it was on Netflix. It was...disturbing yet kinda weak at the same time.

Last Kingdom is still in my queue. I just have to get back in to the medieval mood.

Seems like it's taking forever.

When does it start running on the Beeb?

I enjoyed this one more than that Vikings fantasy show, but it's not moving along very quickly.

I never see air date/channel info on IMDB.  Unless it's via an outside news link.

You'd think such a "database" would include such info.   :idiot2:

Yeah, read most of the books, enjoyed season one, and obviously, much of it is set near where I live - and we have walked a lot of the ground depicted in the series - so a lot of local interest.

Usually around +1 year.  When the original network is usually getting ready to air another new season.

Some are going up earlier nowadays, however.  I recall a few being added around 7+ months after the latest season ended.

I'm about four books into the series, Bawb, and I'm really enjoying them. Haven't jumped into the show yet but it's on my list. Hell, I only just caught up with the last three seasons of Game of Thrones.

Enjoy the books, Steelie, they are good reading.

When Doug comes over at the end of May we will be taking them to see some of the places in Northumbria where bits of the filming was done.

We watched the last episode of GoT season 6 last Sunday, and it has been getting better with each episode. At least we have 'The Last Kingdom' to keep us going for a while until the last season of GoT is televised.
Title: Re: The Last Kingdom
Post by: MetalDog on March 09, 2017, 08:21:59 PM
GoT is going to get a longer last season, 13 episodes.  Unfortunately, the 13 episodes will be parceled out as follows: 7 episodes starting around June of this year and 6 more in 2018 on an undetermined date.

Season six just blew me away. It was everything a long-suffering-waiting-on-GRRM-to-finish-the-next-book-and-please-dont-die-first fanboy could have wished for   \m/

I've enjoyed all the seasons.  I am not so die hard that any changes from the books the show made tore me up (like LotR & its movies).  I think Benioff and Weiss have done a fabulous job.  And I just found the release date for later this year:  July 16.
Title: Re: The Last Kingdom
Post by: Steelgrave on March 09, 2017, 09:32:35 PM
They have done a wonderful job in bringing a great fantasy series to life. And I agree about the changes not bothering me. In fact, I think quite a few of them have been improvements, especially in later seasons, where they streamlined plot lines where Martin wandered in the books. And the casting has been top-notch all along.

All in all, a modern classic.

Let's hope they don't push it to be more PC in the future.

After a certain infamous worldwide political agitator & propagandist bought a huge $13.5 Million lump of Netflix shares, becoming a leading shareholder, I'd be even more wary of PC content being pushed there in the future.  :knuppel2:
