The BBC adaptation of the Bernard Cornwell 'Saxon Stories' series of books begins next week, so we're looking forwards to watching that.

Erm, yes, well...I, er, thought it was worth a little reminder.
Yes.
First episode watched. Pretty good so far.
Seemed rushed but not bad - glad I can fill in the gaps with book knowledge
Agreed. Its as if they wanted to get the early stuff out of the way so that they could get to the more interesting bits quicker.
..did you enjoy yer Chinese takeaway, Geek?
^You're still talking about the show right?
lol - I was talking to 'Geek on Steam prior to the show, and he said he was waiting for a take-away to arrive in time for the show to start.
I did - duck fried rice with peanut satay sauce and prawn crackers - bit of cider and some Viking stabby action
That's real class that is mate!

Hope I didn't miss the first one. Got the series set to record now.
Any thoughts on this one so far? Am wondering if I'd want to pick this up for the inevitable disk release, or if I'm just better off sticking with the books.
I've watched the first four. They are really flying through the storyline. It means that a huge amount of content has been cut from the books. It's OK but I think it might be a little too disjointed for someone who hasn't read the books.
ive enjoyed the last 2 more than the first 2 as the meat of the story gets underway - one thing i remember from the books is that Ubba and Guthrum are supposed to be some proper ***ked up Vikings, proper crazy ass blood lust loonies - im not getting that from the programme - and in essence the baddies arent 'baddie' enough - Ubba is almost likeable, like the Honey Monster
the book also gives you the chance to see the turmoil Uhtred goes through deciding to fight for Alfred or the Danes, then back again - the programme just makes him look like a side switching git to me
They seem to have cut quite a bit out. Where's Steappa, Odda's giant lout? And the Welsh priest who's name I can't remember.
EDIT: Father Pearlig! I think that was his name. And Father Willibald as well. Did they just omit him and combine his character with Beocca?
It looks good, but I think it would be more enjoyable for people who have not read the books. As pointed out above, they do seem to be flying through the story and some interesting characters seem to have been left out.
Hmm. Sounds like I'm probably better off just sticking with the books, at least at this point. Thanks fellas. :)
The first season is on Netflix, now.
I had missed some of the earlier episodes so never quite followed through last year, wanting to watch them in order.
Enjoying it!
I see the second season is/has started?
Having decided to go to bed early and watch a little tv before sleep, I put on Netflix to look for something to watch. I came across The Last Kingdom and it looked interesting. Now, not having read the books, I can only post my impressions based on what I watched. And hot DAMN if it wasn't some GREAT television!! Best I've seen since Sons Of Anarchy went off the air. Eight episodes was nowhere NEAR enough and I eagerly await the upcoming season. Can't get here fast enough.
I found this on the Netflix too...added it to my 75+ show to-watch list.
Put it at the top of the queue. Watch the first episode. If that doesn't make you want to immediately watch the other seven episodes, then remove it from the queue entirely.
The books are so good I've held off on watching the series, but no more. Of course, I just finished Westworld so I'm running a little behind on my binge watching.
I was super bummed to find out that a second season isn't going to happen until this year. I am hoping it's available on Netflix as soon as it gets done with its BBC run.
Well I went to Netflix with every intention of watching it but watched...something else.

Even if it ended in, "hub," you still did your self disservice.
No it was on Netflix. It was...disturbing yet kinda weak at the same time.
Last Kingdom is still in my queue. I just have to get back in to the medieval mood.
Last Kingdom could be just the thing you need then. Regardless, once you get to it, you'll be glad you did.

Seems like it's taking forever.
When does it start running on the Beeb?
I enjoyed this one more than that
Vikings fantasy show, but it's not moving along very quickly.
IMDb is of no help. Just shows 2017. No specific date.

I never see air date/channel info on IMDB. Unless it's via an outside news link.
You'd think such a "database" would include such info. :idiot2:

Thanks for the post Bob. Good news.
Yeah, read most of the books, enjoyed season one, and obviously, much of it is set near where I live - and we have walked a lot of the ground depicted in the series - so a lot of local interest.
Cool. Any ancient ancestors in the show? Non-Villians I mean.
Non that I would admit to. Although my ancestors would more likely be in Mercia :)
Episode 1 of the new season starts on BBC2 tomorrow night. O0 :bd: <:-)
YES!!!
How do you say, "Holy S--t" in Old English? Thanks for the Head's-Up Bro. :bd:
I wonder what the E. T. A. on Netflix is....

Usually around +1 year. When the original network is usually getting ready to air another new season.
Some are going up earlier nowadays, however. I recall a few being added around 7+ months after the latest season ended.
Too long Dammit! Too long. Bawb. Don't ruin it for the rest of us. Though mild 'gloating' is OK I guess.
As you were, chaps. My mistake, its next week it starts. :-[
I'm about four books into the series, Bawb, and I'm really enjoying them. Haven't jumped into the show yet but it's on my list. Hell, I only just caught up with the last three seasons of Game of Thrones.
Enjoy the books, Steelie, they are good reading.
When Doug comes over at the end of May we will be taking them to see some of the places in Northumbria where bits of the filming was done.
We watched the last episode of GoT season 6 last Sunday, and it has been getting better with each episode. At least we have 'The Last Kingdom' to keep us going for a while until the last season of GoT is televised.
GoT is going to get a longer last season, 13 episodes. Unfortunately, the 13 episodes will be parceled out as follows: 7 episodes starting around June of this year and 6 more in 2018 on an undetermined date.
Season six just blew me away. It was everything a long-suffering-waiting-on-GRRM-to-finish-the-next-book-and-please-dont-die-first fanboy could have wished for \m/
I've enjoyed all the seasons. I am not so die hard that any changes from the books the show made tore me up (like LotR & its movies). I think Benioff and Weiss have done a fabulous job. And I just found the release date for later this year: July 16.
They have done a wonderful job in bringing a great fantasy series to life. And I agree about the changes not bothering me. In fact, I think quite a few of them have been improvements, especially in later seasons, where they streamlined plot lines where Martin wandered in the books. And the casting has been top-notch all along.
All in all, a modern classic.
I just got a notice from Netflix that season 2 is now available to watch. Good Times! :bd:
Just quickly chiming in - Game of Thrones the Battle of the Bastards is probably the best TV battle in any era that I have ever seen. Even The Wife was like 'COR'BLIMEY' and such.

Was the last episode here last night. Absolutely brilliant series.
I just started Season 1 of The Last Kingdom and so far I am very, very pleased! Time to order Book 5 while I'm thinking about it.

Oh yes O0
I just finished watching Season Two and it was every bit the equal of Season 1. Come on you Brits. You need to churn this stuff more quickly. O0
Good, innit?
Damn straight. :notworthy:
Howcome anyone didn't post an update of upcoming Season 3 for this magnificent nonpolitically correct BS series laden with mint condition Dark ages Judeo-Christian and Pagan values?? \m/

Let's hope they don't push it to be more PC in the future.
After a certain infamous worldwide political agitator & propagandist bought a huge $13.5 Million lump of Netflix shares, becoming a leading shareholder, I'd be even more wary of PC content being pushed there in the future. :knuppel2:

Fingers crossed :-"
This is great news! I've been waiting on a Season 3 for 3 whole seasons now.
The wife and I just watched all three seasons and love this show. Season four coming on Netflix in 2020. Can't wait!
It even got me to read about 9th and 10th century English history which I have now forgotten.
Another Season?! :D Wahoo! You just made my week Red Argo. <:-)
Destiny is all!
It'll be interesting to see what post-Alfred Britain looks like. Probably not much different I think.
Uhtred returns, The Last Kingdom season 4 drops on Netflix Sunday, April 26th!
Good News!
'Bout damned time! Destiny is all, but it can't wait forever. :bd:
OK, so I just finished Season 4 and I've gotta say Uhtred has lost a step or two. Too many characters, confusing plots and no BIG battles. :'( At least it did end on a high note though so there's hope. My Entertainment is All!
The Last Kingdom has been renewed for season five on Netflix! Nothing official, but according to the article, looks like late 2021 or maybe even 2022 for release though.
