Title: Streaming Gems (Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.)
Post by: BanzaiCat on December 12, 2014, 07:52:41 PM
I saw Anchorman 2 was added to Netflix tonight, so I checked it out. Not nearly as terrible as I thought it was. Started poorly and I thought I was wasting my time, but I stuck with it and it got much better and stayed entertaining. The ending parts...well that didn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense, but it appeals to me.

After that I went looking for something else and just stumbled across this one: The Knights of Badassdom. There's some actors in it you have no doubt heard of it, but I've not heard one peep of this movie, anywhere.

Check out the trailer; you'll probably recognize a few of them.

Started watching Netflix' Marco Polo series a few nights ago.

Pretty good stuff and surprisingly high quality, despite some genre cliches.

I'm just now catching up with it, but Daredevil season one is outstanding! Great casting, from Daredevil/Murdock to Foggy to Karen to Ben, all the way down the cast. Well written dialogue and very sharp writing. DD was always one of my favorites and I'm very happy to finally see him done justice on the screen.

As a side note, Vincent D'Onofrio is simply brilliant as Kingpin. No one dimensional villian, this cat has layers you wouldn't imagine from just reading the comics.

Great show!

Agreed. DD was always a compelling character and the show more than does him justice. It's interesting in that, to a certain degree, you have to work to like Murdock/DD and work to hate Fisk/Kingpin. Good and evil are not always as simple as we would like to believe.

And that, in a nutshell, is what makes really great dramas. Well spoken.

I've heard really good things about DD.

If you're into history and witchcraft, check out Salem...surprisingly scary and well done, and the female lead is quite hawt.

Lucy Lawless is joining the cast for season 2.

I do get annoyed by Salem's dialogue language anachronisms at times.

If Luther is still available, it's well worth watching.

Also, Flashpoint. Surprisingly good. The Pink Power Ranger is a good actress and singer.

Wentworth. It's a modern version of Prisoner: Cell Block H, which ran in the late 70's and 80's. It's a hard core women's prison drama set in New Zealand. It's definitely not Orange is the New Black, the Wentworth women would make the girls in Orange their bitches in record time.  Pretty damn good show, almost a guilty pleasure.

Netflix does well offering a lot of really good British mysteries that were originally broadcast on PBS Masterpiece Mystery. "Foyle's War", "Midsomer Murders", "Sherlock", to name a few.

Is the Americanized version of 'Cracker' available online anywhere? I didn't get the chance to watch when it was on TV and I'm curious how it compares to the original? I don't expect it to be better, just 'different'.

Some recommended lesser known & indies currently on Netflix:

Movies:

Europa Report  > Sci-Fi, mission to Europa
Night Watch (plus the sequel Day Watch)  > Supernatural alterna-world
Ravenous  >  Supernatural/Slasher Western  (Wendigo!)
John Dies At The End  >  Horror Comedy
Tucker & Dale Vs Evil  > Slasher Comedy
Black Death  > Medieval Thriller
Valhalla Rising  > Viking Weirdness

Those are all somewhat dark movies, in their respective genres, but well worth watching for anyone.

If you have Amazon Prime, I'd also recommend watching The Color Out Of Space (2012).  Despite being as indie as it gets, and some bad acting in places (mostly when indie German actors are trying to act American), this still has some wonderfully dark & foreboding stretches that rival any old Twilight Zones and the like.  And it's Lovecraft, of course.

Mirth, agreed: Avengers:EMH is objectively better than the DCAU's Justice League/Unlimited series, and that is no faint praise.

The second season unfortunately stumbles somewhat for various reasons (probably having to do with the lead writers jumping ship once word came down the series was being canceled for a reboot slightly more in line with the Avengers movie at least visually). Still good, but not at the same watermark.

If y'all haven't gotten to the Justice League yet, I recommend watching the three seasons of Superman:TAS first, since major plot points in JL/U tie directly back to events in that series. (Batman, not so much; even Batman Beyond could be technically skipped, despite the JL finale episode, one season too soon due to the producers not being aware they'd get another season yet, being almost completely a finale to that series, too.)

Btw, is Land of the Lost on Netflix? I mean the original series? That is a surprisingly hardcore science fiction epic, if the eps are watched in order (leaving the last of the first season eps to be watched at the end of the second season, since they didn't know they'd get a second season. The third season can be safely skipped, and probably should be.) It will scare the absolute pee out of kids, too.  >:D

There's an indy movie called "Chef" you guys might like - I really dug it. Great little film with lots of star cameos in it. Stars Jon Favreau, SofŪa Vergara, John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Dustin Hoffman, and Robert Downey, Jr., as well as a few others I'm forgetting about.

Favreau is a talented cook in a high-end restaurant, but he gets fed up and ends up quitting his job to start a lunch truck. It's highly rated and very entertaining.

I watched The Art of the Steal last night, a kind of comedy-suspense film starring Kurt Russell (looking oooolllddd, but still a hell of an actor). The movie revolves around stealing valuable works of art, and involves a big plot twist that you can kind of see coming, but it's still a great ride, full of laughs, and Kurt shows he hasn't lost his acting chops. I gave it a 5 out of 5 star rating.

Some of the best comic book adaptations are being done in these animated series. They're as much fun as the live-action films, imho.

I'll have to check out that Avengers and DC stuff. Just about every night I look at the unwatched Agents of SHIELD episodes and think "meh," then Daredevil and think "meh," and then ran across "The Art of the Steal." It's always great to find a movie in there that I've never heard of and be very happy with the time spent watching it.

It's REALLY hard to get into, Daredevil, but it does amp up. Once Vincent D'Onofrio makes his entrance as Kingpin around episode 5 or so, it really starts to take off, but unfortunately that's about where I left off. You'll have to give it a few episodes, mirth. I am only wanting to go back and watch it because of Vincent's performance, which was phenomenal.

On another note, I was very unimpressed with Vincent in Jurassic World. Normally I think he's a great actor (I mean, come on: "seven-six-two mil-li-me-ter...full metal jacket") but JW was overall pretty meh. His role was just awful, one-dimensional, and his lines were bad (though overall the writing was pretty weak). It really sucks that a MEH movie can make a billion-plus (including my eight bucks). Fucking Hollywood.

I need to get back into Daredevil. There's just not much on there right now that's making me want to binge-watch.

The series "Inbetweeners" is pretty good if you don't mind some Brit teen humor (which is pretty much Brit humor, so get ready for a lot of "wanker" and "your dad's bent" references, LOL). It made me laugh like an idiot, though the movies not so much. DEFINITELY not for kids.

D'Onofrio is amazing in the Daredevil series.

I started getting into it after DD was torturing his captives for info.  Not graphic torture, mind you, but definitely more results-oriented than most.  Not just holding a sharp object to a guys' throat while asking him about his connections, but slowly shoving it in kinda stuff.  Grittier.  ;)

Ah, the 90s LiS film. A movie I like both more and less whenever I happen to watch it. Though slightly more 'more' than more 'less' each time, so on the balance it's gaining ground. The fact I've given it a chance more than once says something about my perception of its merits anyway.

It was a nice doc, but I felt they ended the timeline too early.

Need a really long doc on WWI aircraft & prodution improvements throughout the war.  The couple docs I've seen on this subject thus far have been far too brief.

It's fascinating how quickly the technology advanced, and the stories from the pilots flying those rickety deathtraps are even more fascinating.

I stumbled across this one on Netflix today: The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret.

It's an American-British black comedy with David Cross (Mr Show, Arrested Development) and Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners). Also has Will Arnett in it.

This is the opening scene of Episode 1. Warning: NSFW naughty language.

This is a very good series judging from the first episode - totally not PC at all and Cross is hilarious.

Nurse Jackie was a Showtime series that is now on Netflix (or may have been for a while). It's a dark comedy, and is pretty damn good.

Just saw Rock Star was added to it as well, which is a fun movie about 80s hair metal. Lots of hair metal greats in the movie in cameos, too...Jeff Pilson, Zakk Wylde, Jason Bonham, and Myles Kennedy to name a few.

Parks and Recreation just added Season 7, which I think is the final season in that show. It's fun to watch, and funny to see Chris Pratt before he became an A-list film star.

Marvel would never do it and the fans wouldn't allow it either would sell their own children to support it but I would give anything to see a remake of The Incredible Hulk 1978 TV series.

I think Hulk fans look at the TV show the same way Batman fans look at the Adam West show. Most don't like it and pretend it didn't exist. When the 2008 Incredible Hulk movie came out a few years back and the TV show was brought up people would say things like 'the Hulk was too small', 'the show was too brainy with no action', 'Hulk didn't talk', 'it was just a rehash of the The Fugitive', etc. That's not to say both shows didn't have fans, I just don't think most of them are the same fans as the comic following ones. I never cared for the comics Hulk but LOVE the Bixby one. Kenneth Johnson was a genius!

The Hulk TV show was one the best TV/Movie superhero works from that era. It certainly was the best thing involving a Marvel character for a long time.

I'm not saying the fans would want a pure remake of the TV series on the same scale. But a lot of us liked the bare tie-ins to the show in the MCU movie, and wished those could have been a lot stronger. (The TV themes were excellent, for example; why not go ahead and use those in the MCU instead of a few bars for one scene???)

In the time honored tradition of "cheesing Mom off," the boy and I have what we call "Crappy Movie Mornings," at least once a week (typically Saturday) this summer.  The premise is simple: 1-2 stars rating and it's on the viewing list!

So far, Big Ass Spider has turned out to be surprisingly funny.  Not so much Zombeavers and Zoombies but at least the horrible CGI and acting make for some good laughs.  Most implausible, and I really hesitate to use that word in light of everything else I've posted so far, is the movie Airlpane vs. Volcano.  It hits all the marks for a vehicle disaster flick, but wooo-whee is it a stinker.  Dean Cain will indeed do anything for a paycheck.

I've watched the first five (of 13) episodes of Jessica Jones

This is a combination murder mystery and superhero series.  Luke Cage runs a bar in this series.

I've FINALLY getting to watch things from the last 6 years since I'm no longer a manager.  Started Daredevil - but Jessica Jones got me hooked.  I'll finish JJ and then go to Daredevil.

I've been watching Trapped.  It's a murder mystery TV show set in Iceland and reminds be a bit of Fargo without the dark humour.  Rather enjoying it so far.

The show takes place in a small Icelandic town that relies on fishing and the occasional luxury liner full to tourists who show up to gawk at the local glacier.  Trouble starts when a liner shows up from Denmark at the same time that some fishermen pull a dismembered body out of the drink.  The 3-person local police force who usually have nothing more to cope with than the town drunk find themselves having to deal with a murder while trying to cope with a hostile ship's crew, angry tourists, and an intruding mayor who used to be the town's top cop.

I noticed Designated Survivor early this morning...it stars Kiefer Sutherland as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, selected to go to an undisclosed location while the President delivers the State of the Union to Congress and most cabinet members. The premise is, in the first episode, a terrorist attack on the Capital wipes out the lot, leaving Kiefer's character as President. He really sells the role as a fish-out-of-water guy and the first episode was very enjoyable.

Eh..  it was... alright.  Had a few moments, I suppose.

There was more 'kid running around Home Alone style' than it needed.  I didn't end up watching the whole thing in one, or even two, goes.

I'll admit that my horror comedy preference is a bit more of the Evil Dead or Stan Against Evil sort.  So my apathy was probably due to taste.

The one with Jeremy Renner? Yeah, that was a surprise.

I call a movie a "gem" if it keeps my attention. I think I have adult ADHD, because entertainment-wise, I'm all over the place. I'll have Netflix on one tab, Amazon on another, at least two to four YouTube tabs open, a board game within reach...it's hard for me to sit still long enough to do one thing, if it's not engaging. Arrival was something that kept me rooted until the end.

I liked the language/time concept. And I really liked how it became a story about the choices Amy Adams' character had to make. The rest of it was really backdrop for her character's story.

Hard sci-fi with a strong female lead, not something you see a lot of.

I quite enjoyed the South Korean movie The Wailing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5215952/?ref_=nv_sr_1).   :bd:

Was happily surprised with how I couldn't tell which way the things would go.  Being used to spotting plot twists & paths in most movies before they happen, this one kept me addled and second guessing myself.  Made it even more enjoyable!  8)

'Tucker and Dale' is great, although the last little wrap-up kinda dropped the humor a bit longer than it should have.

I also enjoyed 'John Dies At The End'.  Mix of weird horror & comedy.  The movie couldn't possibly do the book justice, leaving out a ton of stuff and having a completely different (worse) end, but it was still enjoyable.  Cult style film.

Thought I'd change the name of this thread to encompass Amazon Prime (and other) titles, too.

Did this to share this one with you guys. 'Tin Star,' on Amazon Prime.

Quote
Set in the majestic Canadian Rockies, Tin Star tells the story of a former British detective who brings his family to the tiny, tranquil town of Little Big Bear for a better life. But when his small town is overrun by migrant workers from a massive new oil refinery, the wave of organized crime that follows them threatens to sweep away everything in its wake and dig up the past.

Tim Roth stars, and he's pretty fantastic in this.

It's on Netflix, called "Nobel." It's a Norwegian-filmed series about a Norwegian Special Forces soldier in Afghanistan. The intro alone is pretty mind-bending. I cut cable years ago. I have netflix and amazon--along with a $7.99 sub to cloud TV that offers up One news network, newsmax and the fight network along with the blaze and about 50 other channels I never watch...but the 7.99 is worth it for the news and the fight network which has a lot of MMA. Overall amazon is the best deal. Just this week alone I probably exceeded the $99 yearly fee just on free shipping--where I've ordered a memory foam matress, the bedframe for it and a TV stand. I never tried one before and locally the cheapest was $400. Amazon had them for $150. Another $50 for the platform--and I got a new bed for about $200.

Locally even cheapy matresses and frame were upwards of $500. I'm pretty pleased with the 10" memory foam. pretty comfotable. I was leary as I have a bad back but alas no back problems with it. I don't know how they do it----if i had shipped those boxes themselve they would have exceeded the $200 I paid for it. Even a small box costs $15 to ship--and this stuff was shipping and received in 2 days.

I only got about halfway through by this morning before we had to go out for the entire day - just got back finally. But, it's very good. I normally don't think much of Will Smith as an actor - he's okay but he's...well, he's to acting what his music was to gangster rap, if that makes any sense. Pretty vanilla, not bad, not great, very middle of the road for the most part. He displays some talent in this one.

I enjoyed it. Nice to see something different for a change. Sure looks like a series setup pilot. I hope it makes it. I liked to know more about the "world".

Not a fan of the musical score not being a fan of rap music. My wife dismissed the whole thing as soon as that crap started playing.

Same.

Doubly worth watching due to being something unusual in big movies today.  In this case something in the urban fantasy genre, and for adults.   :bd:

I hope Netflix' upcoming Altered Carbon movie received comparable quality/funding.

Has anyone been watching 'Halt and catch fire'? It is a dramatic series set in the early 80's and concerns the IBM Clone Wars. Pretty nerdy stuff, but I watched the first episode and am looking forward to more.

I enjoyed the first season.

Think I stopped watching somewhere in the middle of the second(?) because the same melodrama instigating formula kept being used.  Repetition ended my viewing.

Watched Bright over night shift.  It was OK but I could have done with less of the heavy handed race/class warfare stuff.

I wish they'd used Larry Correia's Monster Hunter International books as the source material instead.  Trailer park elves, gangsta gnomes, and orcs who fly Hind gunships.  Could have been epic.

I watched the first two eps of Black Mirror (S1) and thought the social media one (the first episode) was memorable and great. The second one was pretty good too (think it was something about a haunted house? Been a while). I didn't realize it was in four seasons until yesterday, so I'll have to go back to it eventually.

Also regarding Bright - I went looking for more info on the supposed sequel that Netflix is now planning to do and found a LOT of hate from critics on this movie.

I was more than a little surprised. I thought the movie was excellent. Sure there's some oddities in the storyline, but I figured that's something that can be explained later. Nerds and their nerd rage, amirite?  ::)

This is one of the many UK programs I enjoy watching. I caught this for a brief time early last year and was fascinated by it because of how the legal system works (and doesn't work) in cases of re-possession in the UK. Netflix added the first two seasons recently though I think this is still going strong in the UK and is on series 6 or 7 by now.

Title: Re: Streaming Gems (Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.)

I had The Inbetweeners on a lot during work - I'd already seen the series but I like having background noise on while I'm working - and it's quite a brilliant and funny, if coarse and gross, show. There's three series and two movies on Netflix and the humor is pretty well developed around a group of four English schoolkids that are just about to finish...well whatever it is the UK calls high school, before going to uni.

The actors are good at what they do, so when the second movie finished there was the usual Netflix promo, and in it I saw two of the actors from The Inbetweeners. Curious, I clicked on it. White Gold is the name.

It has a bit of a connotation that it's referring to cocaine. It DOES take place in the early 80s and there's a LOT of 80s music in it, which is not necessarily a bad thing. While the drug does come up, it's not what they're selling, so I'm interested in seeing how BBC can make a show about selling window frames entertaining. The first episode was quite funny...again, if this kind of humor is your bag.

I just watched 'Radius' on netfix, entirely by accident, and it turned out to be a great flick. The setup is that a guy (played by Diego Klathoff from 'Blacklist') wakes up from a mysterious accident to find that anyone who comes within 50 feet of him drops dead instantly. The scenery and soundtrack have a rural starkness that reminds me of the movie 'Witness' from the 80's.

I still haven't seen any of them yet, though '10 Cloverfield Lane' is tempting me. The whole 'shaky camera collage' thing that started with 'Blair Witch' just doesn't appeal to me so I have not watched the first 'Cloverfield' yet.. I can deal with it in small bits or even for 2/3 a film as was done in 'Europa Report' (tho those cameras didn't shake much) but not for a whole movie. Please tell me that 'Cloverfield Paradox' isn't like the first one in that.

Neither of the Cloverfield sequels have the shaky cam nonsense. That was one of the reasons I intensely disliked the first movie.

Into the Badlands.  Set in a post apocalyptic world, where Barons have carved out a niche and outlawed guns.  The Baron's keep forces of highly trained fighters, called Clippers, and jockey for position.  I can't say that there isn't a bit of cheese factor for me, but, there are at least two martial arts fights per episode and they are well choreographed.  The downside is that Netflix only has the first season of 6 episodes and it ends in a cliffhanger.  AMC has made and shown the second season and the third will premier sometime this month.  I am hoping that the third season being out will allow Netflix to pick up the second.

The shaky cam doesn't really bother me, so I enjoyed the first Cloverfield. And yes AFAIK there are two new additional movies in production right now.

Same.

First one - too much damn shaky cam.  Didn't even like shaky cam when ppl fawned over it in Blair Witch.  :pullhair:

I thought 10 Cloverfield Lane was great.

Try Jungle with Daniel Radcliffe, on Amazon Prime.

He plays a guy from Israel in 1980 that went on a sabbatical from the homeland, finding his way to Bolivia, where he befriended a German and an American, and together with a guide they decide to explore the 'real' jungle. Of course, things don't exactly go as planned. The movie is very engaging and Radcliffe threw himself into the role, apparently, by starving himself throughout filming.

That's OK Gus. " Shit believes in us even if we don't believe in it". Gandhi told me that one night drunk on our asses sitting at the bar of a Ramada Inn. Then the little bastard skipped-out leaving me to pay the tab. That killed my stint in the Pacifist Movement.  >:(

But come to think of it you maybe right because he kept talking about the bar maid saying, "That's one cow I would definitely eat-up right now". And he was wearing a Seven-Eleven shirt so.....

I think I've mentioned the series 'The Detectorists' before. It's quite...well, charming is the best word I can use for it. Very good writing, acting, pacing, and at times it can be quite hilarious.

Take this scene, for example...the metal detecting club decides to have an open house to hopefully bring in new members, and it goes less than stellar for them.

An episode of Cop Rock would be more entertaining than Discovery.

I might give Lost In Space another chance. I got the feeling the lead female is a bitchy, overbearing character and the male was beat down, but a lot of comments on that show said exactly those things. I should give it more than 11 minutes before passing judgement, though, to be fair. They might have come to the same conclusion without watching more of it.

The visuals were pretty spectacular and I'm no science/engineering guy like Barth, so what do I know.

Title: Re: Streaming Gems (Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.)
Post by: mirth on April 15, 2018, 10:42:53 AM
I've only watched the first episode. It wasn't great, but it was better than I expected and had enough of a hook to get me to watch more. There was plenty of melodrama and family conflicts to drive me crazy. Molly Parker's character is bitchy, but I love her as an actress so I didn't mind so much.

I'm pretty burned out on the Netflix Marvel stuff, so this might be a decent diversion.

Pretty sure nobody else posted this yet...

Saw this on Amazon Prime. There's a lot of highly-rated Russian war movies on AP and this one was pretty good. (Funny how this reminds me of the opening chapters of Red Storm Rising where the intelligence officer was getting suspicious over the Soviets playing remastered patriotic movies...)

The trailer is in English, but the movie itself is Russian with English subtitles, which I prefer over dubbing any day. Well acted, decent effects, and a good story I thought.

...huh. Well the full movie is on YT, too.  :D

I tried watching it a few years ago but it was just a little too ridiculous for me.  I think I got to the part where the Soviets were in a swamp and the white Tiger was parked right in front of them and nobody could see it but the driver and then I turned it off.

I don't remember that bit. The gunner and loader certainly saw it several times.

I mean, yeah, it's pretty fantasy-related and the Tiger is like a ghost, but if you try not to look at it like a Barth scientist you might get enjoyment out of it. :P

Also pretty sure Barth is working on ghost tanks in his secret underground lair, so what do I know.

Woohoo! I have much catching up to do...

Still hard to believe that much of the early part of the show's effects were done on Amigas, when the Video Toaster add-on card first brought CGI to the masses.

Sigh. Babylon 5. Was that the one about the Monty Python-like space station? You remember, Swamp Castle?

King of Swamp Castle: When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. And that one sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, and then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And thatís what youíre going to get, Son, the strongest castle in all of England.

Though it apparently took five attempts for the Babylon 5 people.  ::)

Talk to me after B5 has had 50 years of different movies/books/series.  :P
As for TAS, a lot of the stories were really good. The animation was laughable, true. But go take a look at some of the names that wrote for it. And if you havenít read them the Star Trek Log books based on it are excellent.
And DS9 >>>> BS5 any day of the week/month/year.

Former Navy Corps medic Richard ďDocĒ Shepherd (Steve Carell) re-unites with ex-Marines Sal (Bryan Cranston) and Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) because...well, it's best left to the trailer and the movie itself. Very powerful stuff and good to see Steve Carell in such an emotional role.

Found another good South Korean movie called "Steel Rain" on Netflix. Very tense and entertaining movie about a coup in North Korea where Fat Boy gets gravely injured in a missile attack and a secret policeman smuggles him south to save his life. Things ramp up pretty quickly as this guy doesn't know whom to trust while trying to keep Fat Boy alive, otherwise war would be a guarantee. Meanwhile, the coup leaders move forward on all cylinders as they try to bring that war to reality.

Note you might have to click the CC button in the video to bring up the English subtitles, if they don't automatically appear.

It was very mediocre. As are all the other ones.

This fifth one, I've not seen before. I'm a chump because I went to the theater to see the first three. Since they got more and more of a mess, I watched the fourth one offline and the fifth one just yesterday/today.

The first one is interesting just to see the CGI and effects, but I wouldn't waste my time with the rest of them, Gus. They just kept making more of them as each made about a billion dollars, especially thanks to the Asian market (giant robots are their thing apparently). This fifth one is just bad. So much shoehorning and plot holes and unconnected events...it's like watching a screenplay written by a five-year-old.

"The first military movie, made for military personnel and veterans, made by military personnel, with a cast made up of at least 75% veterans."

"There were three GWOT Medal of Honor recipients cast in this film, Clint Romesha, Dakota Meyer, and Leroy Petry, all playing themselves."

Warning: very NSFW red-band trailer. ;D

This gem is on Amazon Prime.

The best Amazon review:

After watching Range 15 my beard grew 8 inches, my manhood stood marble hard, and wife became pregnant, gestated for 9mos in front of my eyes, and birthed a cigar smoking, rifle carrying, whiskey swilling bald eagle. I've been watching a series called Mind Hunter on Netflix and enjoying it quite a bit so far.  It takes place in the 70's and tells the story of two FBI agents who developed the techniques to identify and track serial killers.  Some great performances and solid writing in there.  Really like the guy who plays serial killer Ed Kemper; the woman who plays the girlfriend of one of the FBI agents (great, sarcastic sense of humour), and the character of FBI agent Bill Tisch.

Finally finished with Watchmen: Ultimate Cut on Amazon Prime late last night. Bloody thing is over 3.5 hours long, but it's oh so worth it if you're a fan of the graphic novel. The movie that came out on this wasn't all that great, but this 'ultimate cut' is VERY close to the graphic novel, including the sub-story of the shipwrecked captain. The ending is slightly different but it's pretty much the same result. Very worthwhile to check out if you have not done so yet.

I've been watching Netflix's docu-drama series, "The Roman Empire: Reign of Blood" which I like a lot. The second season is about Julius Ceasar which is great. but one thing about this series that just drives me nuts is every battle scene has to be the Holloywood-esc scenes of soldiers fighting like Bruce Lee with swords. Never the more correct style of the Cohort formation, the Pilums or whatever and of course Ceasar has to be in the middle of every fight like Braveheart.  :pullhair:   Why do Directors do this? Is it cheaper? Or more exciting they think? Or do they just not give a damn about reality?  :hide:

Very good so far. They didn't wait around to get the action started like season 1. I want to know who the uber bad-ass FBI dude is that calls Kingpin "convict". Hopefully all will be revealed......

I re-sub'd to Netflix just to watch Daredevil S3.

Ugh.  Did they ditch the previous writers and hire some from the DC movies?   :pullhair:

I kept stopping after every episode to take a breath and build up stamina for the next.  Waiting for it to ... just get the F going.  Probably broke a sighs-per-minute record from all the hero whining and poor use of D'Onofrio.  Everyone's sitting on their thumbs and rotating for so long.

Was near quitting altogether, numerous times, and then shit finally started happening.  And it sucked.  Underwhelmed after the sixth episode, I stopped watching the season and haven't yet bothered to go back and attempt finishing.

First two seasons were wonderful.  This one.. no.  :hide:

Wow! :wow:  I really like it, though only up to episode 7 or 8. The DD self-pity party does get old at times. Still, great fights, unexpected twists and great acting beats the hell out of anything Star Trek in the last 5 years.

I just finished DD season 3 and I thought it was good. And like season 1 it took a bit to get up to speed.

Very disappointed it was cancelled. The last scene was a great teaser for what might have come. I won't spoil it for anyone.

Yes and it works really well... if you have a the right equipment. You'll need to watch it on a newer smart TV with the latest Netflix app. OR a tablet or PC with the Netflix app. My 6 year old Sharp Smart TV wasn't able to run it but my 2 yr old Sharp in my man cave was. Netflix will let you know if you can run it.

It's interactive in that at certain points in the story you are given 2 choices and the program with follow the path you choose. But you have to choose quickly only 10 seconds or so, or a default choice is made. Choice is made with your remote or mouse.

The actual story in Bandersnatch is just OK, but works well as a demo of this type of tech. They even made the "flip back to choose a different path" thing work wreally well without it becoming ponderous to re-watch up to the decision point.

Hope they make more deeper stuff like this.

That sounds like an awesome idea for a spy thriller:
'The neighborhood looks sketchy. Do you enter the clandestine meeting place? YES / NO'
'A van full of ISI goons is chasing your car. Ahead left is the off ramp into the Old City and right is the express way to the International Airport. LEFT / RIGHT'

I basically made at least one REALLY BAD CHOICE and it seem to throw me into a loop of sorts. I'd like to go back and watch again and try to take a different path and see what happens.

It is kind of a neat idea but it really does turn the experience into more of a game than a show.

There is a short (4 episode) series called Age of Tanks on Netflix. I have watched 3 of the 4 episodes - it is a German production, with English dialogue, and is fascinating. Covers the whole 20th century history of the tank and includes a lot of footage of events I have never seen before, including the Soviet incursions in to Hungary and Czecheslovakia, the 1973 Yom Kippur War (Israel/Arabs) and even a few minutes on the Tianamen Square massacre. Check it out if you have even the slightest interest in armor.

Also a film called, "Gallipoli", no not the Mel Gibson one from back in the 80's, but a new 'reenactment film' whatever that is. Another new series called, Empires I think showed up after I watched, The Roman Empire series and I get some weird Marvel animated shows after watching anything Marvel. Why don't they just tell me what's new when it's new instead of pandering to my tastes? Did I just say that?  :hide:

Iím up to the final two episodes and I think itís definitely weaker than the first season. A lot of emo hipster dialogue. ĎWhy am I so angry?í asks Billy Russo 3-4 times per episode.

Although this season is weaker than the first, itís still solid and Bernthal still portrays Jarhead...er...the Punisher, well. He is my Punisher of choice. At least better than Dolph Lundgren.

Just finished up Punisher S2. Slow start but got better toward the end. 13 episodes was too many, however that ending scene was AWESOME.

Watched "Polar" last night. It's pretty decent for those nights where sleep isn't coming to you easily. I'm a huge Mads Mikkelsen fan. Also, there is a hot chick nekkid in the movie, so that right there is Oscar worthy.

My son told me Polar was outstanding. I gotta wonder how much of that is a nekkid chick and how much is actually a good movie...

Mars on Amazon Prime is pretty good. I'm only a few episodes in but it's better than most other Mars-related movies and series.

I've been re-watching Entourage...looks like I might be getting back into a bit of acting on the side.

I hate to be the one to tell you this Slash but Walking Dead has had it's ups and downs. It's just starting to get good again after a really serious drop in quality. I almost stopped watching.

The first few seasons are great though. My favorite earlier character is Shane (Jon Bernthal).

I did say, 'some of the zombies', not all of them. Course they need a little cleaning-up, maybe run a comb through their hair, if they still have hair that is. Maybe run 'em through a car wash... several times. Think about it, no drinks to buy, no flowers, no 'then she said, then I said' conversation. Just throw some meat down in front of her and she's happy.  <:-)   You could do worse.

I've been perusing, "Bad Blood" on Netflix recently and damned if I'm not fully hooked. It's a based on a true story gangster series starring Kim Coats from Sons of Anarchy set in Montreal in the 90's to 2010 or so. I love mob movies and this is in the vein of 'Casino' or 'Good Fellows' but a little slower paced. Just one season so far but I hope there's more coming.  O0

The Wandering Earth, a Chinese big-budged sci-fi flick, just deployed to Netflix. The premise is ludicrous but the special effects are impressive. Apparently this was the second-biggest box office hit in China's history.

It's 2061, and the Sun is dying (prematurely, obviously). The Earth is going to die, too, unless something drastic happens. That 'drastic' thing is all the people of the worlds coming together and building 10,000 massive fusion-powered engines to turn Earth into one gigantic spaceship. To travel to Alpha Centauri. Yeah, but it's pretty and the action isn't bad at all.

I realize I'm VERY late to this party but I finished-up the series, 'Breaking Bad' tonight on Netflix. I gotta say TV don't get no better than this one. After a slow start I was hooked from Season 1 and it only gets better from there. First TV show in a long time that made me laugh, pissed me off, disturbed me at times, and damned-near made me cry at the end. So long Eisenburg, I will miss you.  :'(

When it comes to shows that people insist I absolutely, positively, MUST watch, I tend to not want to watch it even more.  I guess I like to zig while everyone else zags.  Always kinda been that way.  I'll get around to it when there's time.  Like when I am old and confined to a bed.  Gives me something to look forward too while I am dying.

We have just about finished all of the episodes of "Nailed It."  They take three real amateur bakers, give them something next to impossible to make with a lot of intricate decoration, give them too little time to make it, and give $10,000 to the winner (often the only one who makes something edible).

Short episodes, light hearted, makes me want to make a cake with buttercream icing.  Not a hard core baking show.

I watched the final episode of Giri/Haji on Netflix last night.  It's an 8 part series about a Japanese detective sent to London to try and track down his brother who has ties to the Yakuza.  Starts out strong but gets weaker as the series progresses.  Overall, I enjoyed it because the acting was first rate and almost all of the characters (even the 'bit' players) were genuinely interesting and had a lot of depth to them.  It was refreshing to see Tokyo presented in a non-fetishized way (although the Yakuza angle was cliched) and I actually found the story of the main character's wife and mother to be more interesting than that taking place in London.  Worth a watch but with diminishing returns as the story progresses.

I saw a very decently done movie on Netflix last night, "The Old Guard" starring Charlize Theron. It's about a band of immortal warriors fighting to better humanity--you'd think if they had been around for a few centuries they'd know that's an exercise in futility-- while staying one step ahead of all of humanity who's trying to catch them to learn their secrets. It had some great fight scenes and apparently Theron does most of her's herself. Based on a graphic novel it maybe turned into a Netflix series if it's a hit. I liked it.
