Title: 2016 Grogheads Fantasy Baseball
Post by: Bison on March 14, 2016, 03:59:56 PM
The league is now up and operational.  All past managers have been sent a reminder with a link to the game.  If you are interested in joining the league and are having issues, leave a message here and Metaldog (assistant commissioner) or I can help get you into the league.

League URL:
https://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/grogheads

The league will auto draft in about 15 days, but first we need an even number of teams.  So far 7 of last years managers have signed up.

EDIT:

This is the URL to join the league:

Geek,

One of the stipulations this year is, wherever possible, your team must consist entirely of Japanese players.  Good luck. O0

OK.  I'll cue the draft to happen this weekend.  That'll give everyone about a week to scrub the free agents before the start of the season.

I'll be setting the league ready to draft on Saturday evening.  Last chance to rank and order your draft.

Fantasy baseball is so different from Fantasy football in that way. The season is so long, so many players get injured then come back, veterans hit the career wall and just suck and there are always new 'stars' each year that nobody drafted and are available 1/2 way through the year that your initial draft is not nearly as important as it is in football. It is way more important to manage your team in baseball.

I haven't messed with the ranking too much myself.  I think there are a couple of solid picks, but baseball is a long season.  My only real goal this season is to not miss the innings pitched requirement because I forgot to adjust my rotation.  Stupid rules.

Now you scan the available players list and agonize over whether the guys you have rostered are worth keeping in favor of guys that are still available.  Or you offer trades to your fellow owners.  Or you just stand pat and do nothing.

So, I was looking at the match between Brand and I, and I noticed that he had more players than I do.  I also notice a message that says I've used 0 of my 4 player adds for the week.  So I click on add player, find one that I want, but I'm being forced to drop a player first.  What am I missing.

No idea, but I accidentally dropped someone last week I didn't mean to (Lucroy) and then couldn't figure out how to reverse it.  C'est la vie...

I wish you had said something Brant.  Me or Bison could have fixed it properly.  I'll give him back if you'd like.

OJsDad, there are x amount of players allowed on your roster at any one time.  You cannot exceed that limit except for players that you currently have on your roster that are on the Disabled List.  If you move a player of yours onto the Disabled List (click the tab to the left of the player and then scroll down a bit, you'll see a slot on the Bench labeled DL), a slot will open on your Bench.  You may fill that slot with any player that is on Waivers.  Otherwise, in order to Add a player, you have to Drop a player.

Somehow I ended up w/ A-Rod, who is only available as a "util" guy - is that b/c he's mostly a DH these days?  I'm not going to be able to play him at 3B at all?  Seems like a waste to be carrying him if the only place I can put him is the util slot.  I'd never see someone with util as his designated position before this season.

I wish you had said something Brant.  Me or Bison could have fixed it properly.  I'll give him back if you'd like.
Well, he was the backup catcher / backup 1B that I had.  I don't like carrying 2 pure catchers b/c it seems a waste of a roster spot, but if I can get someone who is a C/x then I can bounce him around as needed.  Now I'm carrying multiple 1Bs, but only 1 C b/c there isn't another worthwhile one out there.

Secondary question - are the roster sizes smaller this year?  Seems like I was carrying more dudes last year.
Title: Re: 2016 Grogheads Fantasy Baseball
Post by: MetalDog on April 05, 2016, 07:24:02 PM
I saw A-Rod's Util designation.  And I would say that yes, he can only be used in the Utility spot.  As for roster size, same as it ever was.  I keep trying to convince Bison of a few more spots, but, he likes it pared down.  As soon as you drop someone, I'll transfer Lucroy to you.

The roster slots are prescriptive in that you have 8 hitter slots designated by position plus the 1 utility slot to compensate for the DH rule.  The pitching slots are 2 SP and 2 RP.  Everyone has 6 bench slots that can be used for backups of any position including pitching.  Additional slots are allocated, but designated for DL players so you can keep two players listed on the DL but still field a full 19 man roster with short term replacements.  I don't expand the roster for basically two reasons.  1. 10 teams with 19 players is a total of 190 players assigned to teams, so there is a limited talent pool that would help much beyond a temporary patch in the undrafted players.  Expanding rosters would only accentuate this issue and be incredibly difficult on a manager who suffers a number of DL players.  2. The limit forces the manager to make some decisions.  For example, do I keep 6 outfielders or do I drop one or two for position flexibility to account for scheduling needs at the expense of potentially more offensive output since you could play 4 outfielders.  Outfielders by far and away account for the majority of "position" players in generating stats because 1/3 of all everyday players are outfielders.

The A Rod is odd.  The positions of players are set by Yahoo.  I'm not sure why he is restricted to UTL only.  It's not something I recall seeing before hand, so it's something I'd need to look into as to why the UTL position is given to a player.  As MD said though we can revert the drop if you want it reverted.  No issues there.

Major League Baseball has 25 man rosters.  It wouldn't kill you to add one or two more spots.

He might be cued to drop, but it won't be active until tomorrow.  I've seen that happen before where I drop a player but he goes on waivers or takes 24 for yahoo to update the information.  I think it has something to do with the time of the drop and ongoing games.

That's a horrible argument since most of the additional players are bullpen pitchers not position players.  So what's the utility of having 6 more arms if they cannot be slotted or provide any meaningful stat contribution.

Post by: MetalDog on April 05, 2016, 08:26:43 PM
Playing the schedule each day, especially Mondays and Thursdays, is much easier with an expanded Bench.  It also allows more flexibility in how you slot your Starting Pitchers.  You want to play it the way we are playing, that's fine.  It still wouldn't kill you to add one more spot.  :P

So, if Brant drops A-Rod, does he lose the stolen base he had today, or does he keep it since Brant played him first.

Or maybe the more import question is do you keep for the week.  If I understand this correctly, you and I are head to head all week.

It's called making executive decisions within the limits of resource constraints.  No one says you cannot play the wire adding and dropping players just like a minor league system or carry more or less pitchers.  You just need to figure out how to do it with 6 slots.

The reality is that teams on average carry 12 pitchers and 13 position players.  Our league is initially setup giving you 14 position players and 6 pitchers.  You just don't have the real option of carrying 6 pitchers in the bullpen.  The stat utility of carrying an extra position player for covering the one off day a starter may have due to schedule isn't a given offensive stat increase.  It's really necessary to have a preposition player for DL purposes and for specific players/positions that are not everyday players.  Generally specific players are is limited to catchers who tend to have many more off days then the typical everyday infielder or outfielder.

If A Rod was in the UTL position today, Brant will get credit for the steal.  He will retain credit for A Rod's steal for this weeks stats even if he drops him.

I'm pretty sure Ortiz is also Util only, and they might be it. Ortiz makes sense, since he ALWAYS plays DH. I guess they figure ARod is in the same boat at this point?
Title: Re: 2016 Grogheads Fantasy Baseball
Post by: Bison on April 05, 2016, 10:08:17 PM
I actually have Ortiz and he's listed as 1B, which really makes the A Rod slotting weird.  I'm not seeing the logic of the slotting, but I'll have to dig into it.  Unfortunately there is nothing a commissioner can do to change how Yahoo does positions for players.

I wish there was a holds and blown saves were categories. There are a lot of good setup men who never get picked because they don't score you points.

A 45 ERA.  I'm not a baseball fan and even I not that's pathetic.  And what good does batting at 417 and only have 2 runs and 1 RBI to show for it.  SCORE YOU BUMS!  Heck, I have the pre-season #1 ranking guy and he went 0/4 last night.  These rankings must be some kind of reverse order thing.

How many players can be place in DL.  I currently have one in DL, but need to move him to my pitching bench.  I have two pitchers that are D2D, and want to move one to DL, so I can then move the one that is in DL to my bench, since I cannot move the one that's in my DL to the bench as it would exceed my number of pitchers.

wow...  I knew there was a 4/week limit on transactions, but I've been wheeling and dealing so much that I've used 36 of my 40 transactions, and we're not into July yet.

Now, at least 2 of those were mistakes on my part (like accidentally dropping Lucroy at the start of the season) but I totally wasn't watching the long-term limit on transactions as I've been trying something new (and pretty much the same f'n' results) by grabbing different guys each week.  Maybe if I'd limited myself to just 1/week I'd still have some transactions left.

By now your lineup should be fairly well set so you might not need to make a lot more pick ups. I don't think picking up someone for a player on the DL counts as a transaction, it shouldn't if it does, and you can always trade up until August.

I don't know if there's any way to selectively circumvent the limit, but I'm down to my last transaction for the season, but I also 'burned' 2 transactions earlier this year when I had accidentally dropped Lucroy, and you had to manually put him back for me.

Anything we can do for that?

thanks

So, when I got on a plane to come home today, Hanley Ramirez was listed as D2D, so I played Brandon Belt.  Belt went 0/2.  Ramirez ended up playing and went 2/4 with 2 Runs, 2 HR's, and 6 RBI's.

I HATE BASEBALL!

I need more weeks like last week.  Of course, I've also used up all my roster moves and have a pitcher on the DL.  I was swapping players like mad in the first 10 weeks of the season just trying to see what I could pull off to stay competitive.

Can we just all take a moment and appreciate how much ass Trea Turner is kicking?

His last 2 weeks...

R- 17
HR- 2
RBI- 8
SB- 7
Avg- .422

According to Yahoo, he's the #2 ranked player in the league over the last 14 days, behind only - his fellow Shotgun Express outfielder, Kris Bryant.
(But lets also remember that everyone knew Bryant was going to knock the cover off the ball, but Turner started the season in AA, was a SS forced to play 2B in the minors, and is now patrolling CF for the Nats because he was doing too well on the basepaths to stay in the minors)

So the Brewers have shut down Junior Guerra for the rest of the season...  and I'm out of roster moves to replace him!  (ugh!)

I used too many back in May/June trying to get a decent roster together and I'm paying for it now.  Especially since I have no backup SS and stuck with Gregorious for the last few weeks.

nah - it's my own fault.  I got a little waiver-happy early in the season, and was honestly expecting to be so far out of it by now that it would be irrelevant.  I never expected to be this close to the end and fighting for first.  N.E.V.E.R.  And none of y'all did either.

It'll never happen, Marty.  Our esteemed commish has tied one hand behind all our backs with move caps and short benches.  It's his league though, so, we play by his rules.  I'll say this about that, we have pretty good participation, but, unlimited moves and deeper benches benefit those who participate daily and I'm not sure how that would shake out with the rest of our league mates.  It's pretty easy to mill pitchers and position players to cover shortfalls and maybe not everyone enjoys playing that way.  Besides, it's kind of tradition now for me to tweak the commish's nose about his tightfisted and restrictive ways.  I suspect the rules suit his play style best.  It's the only way I can figure that he keeps coming in first.

If you go by the number of moves made we have pretty good participation but that doesn't necessarily mean we had a lot of people checking their line-ups every day, or every other day, which is what you need to do in the type of league we have.

Personally I prefer the 'everyone counts every day' type of league because it requires less  active managing. You are more like a GM in those, pick a team, make some small adjustments and let the season play out.

I think an increase in the number of moves per season would not hurt, maybe 50 or 60 is more appropriate. Maybe even adding more positions to the active roster would help also. I think ESPN has leagues where you can start 1 x 1B, 1 x 3B and 1 x 1B or 3B and the same for 2B and SS. Also expanding the bench by 1 or 2 spots might help.

I wasn't even paying attention enough over the last 2 weeks to realize it was the playoffs.  I was just managing my team for the matchup that week.

If I hadn't had my closer spend half the week with an "INF" ERA, and King Felix shit the bed in his one start that week, I might've made the semifinals at least a bit more competitive w/ Bison.

Instead, I can't really complain about finishing 4th in a league where I'm not sure I've ever finished better than 3rd from the bottom.

Any chance that for next year, we figure out a way to keep 3-5 of the players from our current teams to have a core to build from?
I know we've floated the idea before, but couldn't remember the reason for it.

Great season y'all!  :D

Once I figured out that I could drop batters and add pitchers, I started to do better.

Huh...well would you look at that.  Great game Metaldog.  I'll need to look at how tie breakers are settled, but I suspect it's due to rank going into the playoffs.

Thanks Marty.  I can look at the keeper rules and see how easy it is to setup.

Title: Re: 2016 Grogheads Fantasy Baseball
Post by: Bison on September 26, 2016, 07:39:03 AM
Well the tiebreaker for head to head leagues is based on the three games that MD and I played during the season.  I won 2 of 3 match ups, but what mattered is that I won 14 stat categories to Metaldog's winning 13 categories in those match ups.  So in the end, it was a very close championship this year.

Great season everyone.

Thanks buddy.  I honestly thought going into yesterday you were going to win by two points.  I thought you'd win both the stolen bases and the save games categories.  My five stolen bases is my highest number in that category in months.  I'd only been averaging I'd say about 3 a week and I hadn't recorded more than 1 save in several weeks.  My pitching staff was rather atrocious the second half of the season.
