Looks like Brad Wardell called the release time frame pretty close.

First glance, I'm not a big fan of the graphics, but hopefully they'll grow on me.  Looking forward to more info.

A few of the selling points from the steam page.

Speaking of Brad, this sounds like Fallen Enchantress...
EXPANSIVE EMPIRES:
See the marvels of your empire spread across the map like never before. Each city spans multiple tiles so you can custom build your cities to take full advantage of the local terrain.

"boosts" makes me wonder if this is going to be arcadey type feature, hope not...
ACTIVE RESEARCH:
Unlock boosts that speed your civilization’s progress through history. To advance more quickly, use your units to actively explore, develop your environment, and discover new cultures.

this sounds good, similar to civ3 armies I think...
COMBINED ARMS:
Expanding on the “one unit per tile” design, support units can now be embedded with other units, like anti-tank support with infantry, or a warrior with settlers. Similar units can also be combined to form powerful “Corps” units.

Rock Paper Shotgun had a write up that touched on it. Sounds like things start with the usual peace/war stuff we're used to, but can eventually blossom into embassies and the like. Also, they mention that there will definitely be multiple types of warfare...

I wonder what, if anything, will be added substantively to the game? I have had all the Civ games from 1-5, and frankly each iteration hits the diminishing marginal return for me.

Civ6 had better have something really new and cool to justify the cost, otherwise what is it - a revisited reskin? Fingers crossed.

The thing I really want to see is the emergence of new civilizations that don't necessarily start at the beginning of the game.  In Civ5 terms, I want to see 2-3 nearby city-states cut a deal that unifies them into a new civ that emerges on turn 188 and suddenly there's a new 'big' player in the game with 3 cities and bearing down on another city-state before launching an invasion of your territory, or that takes control of a particular resource because it's all in their territory.

Dynamic world would be good too. Ie volcanos, global warming,  earthquake and draughts changing tiles and landmasses.

We need a "realm divide" event.

It's been a while since I played civ, but doesn't it already have similar features in the various iterations? Plus, IIRC you could set workers on clean up. I agree it's a good thing to include.

It might, but I don't think to the degree that I would like, for example a volcano will spawn a new island, draught will kill off those fertile lands and create deserts, warming melts ice caps and raises sea level. I think alpha centari had some of that but not certain. Most of the change I remember seeing in 4 is forests of jungles growing when tiles are left alone.

Civ II had some of the features Boggit described.  Too many factories would create a global warming situation that would cause sea levels to rise and flood the coasts and create more swamps along waterfronts.  It would also occasionally spawn volcanoes in the mountains.

Civ III had volcanoes, too

Quote
Notably, this is the first Civ game since Civilization 4 in 2004 to launch with a completely new game engine
The author makes it sound like there's been 11 other versions of Civ since Civ4.

Quote
The first is what he calls “Unstacking the cities,” a reference to the way Civilization 5 flattened out the “Stack of Doom” armies that ruled Civilization 1 through 4 and limited each tile to having just one military unit on it at a time. “All of the sudden the military side of the game got much more interesting,” he observes. “There’s all sort of tactical complexity that was unlocked by putting the units out on the map.” So for Civilization 6 Beach’s team has applied the same concept to cities, which in all previous games have always existed on a single tile, cramming every building into that space.

Instead, Firaxis has created the concept of 12 different types of color-coded Districts (five or six of which will be available from the beginning) that exist on their own tiles on the map, outside the city center and will house specific building types. “A science district, which we’ve called a campus, once constructed will allow you to put a library and a university and a research lab out on that tile. And now your city is sort of specialized toward being a really good science city,” says Beach.

Of course, the number of Districts a city can support is limited by its population, which will force you to choose which areas each city should specialize in early on, and provide yet another strong incentive to expand your empire early. And those choices will be heavily influenced by the terrain you start on, says Lead Producer Dennis Shirk. “Right out of the gate you’re going to get adjacency bonuses of science by putting a Campus next to mountains or jungle. If you put down a holy site you’re going to want it next to woods to get the bonus there. If you’re on the coast, obviously you’re going to want to build a harbor. But these take up tiles, so eventually you also have to think about feeding your people. You have to make sure you can still build farms and mines, and wonders take up whole tiles as well. You can’t have everything everywhere.”

“Every city is a handcrafted, hex-by-hex layout puzzle,” adds Beach, pointing out that you’ll have to go back and reevaluate your land use choices in the late game when new options become available.

this is going to be interesting - I'm curious if they're expanding the size of the maps to account for the greater sprawl of the city

This was the first thing I thought of as well... "That's going to totally screw with the scale of the maps!"
But the more I think about it, I don't think it will change much except the look of the maps. It sounds like they are just specializing the area around a city hex. So instead building stuff outside the city that is in it's influence rings, like farms and market etc., now you build stuff that was normally contained in the city on these hexes.

So you'll get macro-looking cities and the rest of the country side will wild. But if 2 cities are close enough, you now get continuous urban landscape.

So far the art, it looks cartoony like Civ Rev, and this new city thing are not promising... to me. If the diplomacy, warfare, and research are interesting then I'll be more will to give it a go.

Oh god, I remember standing in the software store at the local mall drooling over a pre-release box of the original Civ.  I'm not sure I have ever looked forward to a game so much in my whole life.  And then when I got it, and it was even better than I had imagined.

Civ II may be the best-reviewed one of the bunch, but really it just refined the original formula.  That first one was just so much better - to me - than any other computer game I had played.  I was sooooo  :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I missed the Civ 2 wagon and didn't get three until very recently (like last year recently) so I have not put much time into it.

Sad to see features get removed from such a series.

I'll have to take a closer look at 3 sometime methinks.

Civ II was the pinnacle for me.  I thought it refined and improved the original (and had sweet FMV!  I loved the DaVinci one) in every way.  I barely remember anything about Civ III other than that I didn't like it.  I really didn't like Civ IV much at all and the childish graphics made it worse IMO.  I like Civ V a lot (I didn't really start playing it until after a lot of the DLC came out though)  I'm hoping for more and better from Civ VI.

I've really liked them all, but I probably played Civ II the most, for whatever reason.  Civ III had some slowdown problems in the late game.  I'm not tempted to play any old ones with Civ V out.  I still crank 'er up from time to time despite being overwhelmed by newer games.

Then you would love my Civilizations mod!  It lets you start the game with Civ III, uses Civ IV for the mid-game, then Civ V for the late game, then finally transitions over to Armageddon Empires after Ghandi inevitably nukes everyone.

Civ5 was such utter crap that there is no way I'll pay a nickel for Civ6,7, or 8 until they are out, patched and reviewed thoroughly. I wasted more money on Civ5 and all of its DLC for less gameplay than anything else I own. I kept thinking, "OK, this next DLC will make it fun..."

What a fool I was. Not this time. Modded Civ4 is still the best of the lot.

I wasn't going to but since I since own nearly every game in the Civilization series (http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/civilization-series), I figured I might as well take the plunge.

In the second article, they mentioned a day-night cycle. Uh, a day-night cycle in a game meant to span ages of civilized development? Doubt you will finish any of those multiplayer games!

In the second article, they mentioned a day-night cycle. Uh, a day-night cycle in a game meant to span ages of civilized development? Doubt you will finish any of those multiplayer games!

By the time we get to Civ 8, the game time will pass in correspondence to real time for the gamer!

Agreed that a day night cycle on a game like civ makes NO sense at all.

It barely made sense for a game like cities skyline.

RPGs, sure...wargames, OK I'll bite. Grand strategy games? No f'ing way

It's a little different dynamic this time.

Each time a night cycle starts, they'll just have Kit Harrington's voice cut in, "Winter is coming."

I have really never got into past Civ games, even though I did buy Civ 5...but all this recent talk made me get curious again so I purchased the complete version of Civ 5 (to get remaining DLC) and try this thing one last time:)

May have to call upon the experts to help me figure things out along the way....likely won't have much time until later this week to really give it a go.  I really have to stop reading this forum:(

personally I think both civ5 and civ Beyond Earth are terrible games. An A.I. that cannot follow it's own combined arms rules---or in other words it cannot do just that--which makes the A.I. unable to beat the player in a conquest game. Sure-with cheats it can pull off a science victory or whatnot but that isn't representative of A.I. either.

Say what you want about stacks of doom--but in the civ series it was the way that allowed their A.I. to challenge you--as neat as hexes and combined arms seems to a wargamer it's rather pointless in game if the A.I. cannot manage it----and playing a game you can't lose is equally pointless.

Not to mention everything has been shaved down to "+1" or "+2"---instead of say "religous fanatics vs Tree huggers"---since they all but removed both -- which makes both games up for example lifeless and hollow.

And after the rather disappointing XCOM2----and that lazy design and bad A.I.--there would need to be across the board raving reviews for me to bite--

Disappointing XCOM2?  Holy shit, what have I been doing wasting 100's of gaming hours on it!?  Especially since I couldn't set it down for Polaris Sector, Stellaris and TW:Warhammer, all releases I was excited for.  Sounds like, once again, I am an outlier to the mainstream of society.

Pretty sure you aren't the outlier.  Seriously - how many complaints about XCOM2 did you see over the past 18 months?

It won the Digital Action Game in our last Readers' Choice Awards, and placed 3rd as the overall digital game.  I don't want to derail a Civ thread with an XCOM discussion, but the fact that one loud voice doesn't like it doesn't put you in a minority for disagreeing.

I pointed out quite in depth my reasons for that opinion on XCOM 2 in the xcom2 thread on this board--just go read it. Everything is spelled out quite clearly--including the press's ability to blindly ignore things and give unwarranted and undeserved high scores--but to not highjake THIS thread take it over to that one please.

Hey, no doubt ghostryder can be rather impressed with his own opinion, but it's also true that there's always a solid basis for it and he  doesn't deliver it until he knows a game well enough to comment helpfully.  Read a few of his reviews and his biases are easy to spot: just adjust for those, and you're left with something pretty valuable.

IMHO.

lol. It is funny how a game ---an invention that is supposed to be entertainment- can divide people so much a war of words can follow as if someone just invaded an innocent nation. I think mainly that is because nowadays most of us are playing alone--using an anon tech to communicate ---when I grew up--before their was even pong--you game'd around a table face to face...and things got deep when you discovered their was more out there than risk and monopoly---two great games BTW that strangly do not have a good computer version.

It's this very anon forum that spews unwarranted views of people--it's always shocking to actually meet people behind the screen in RL and see how much off they really are to preconceived notions formed due to bad sentence structure or whatnot--I write about games but because I'm not stephen King and horrible at writing this is common--until you meet me  :uglystupid2:

CIV III is the one i prefer for early game...

Then you would love my Civilizations mod!  It lets you start the game with Civ III, uses Civ IV for the mid-game, then Civ V for the late game, then finally transitions over to Armageddon Empires after Ghandi inevitably nukes everyone.
Interesting....

A good point, but consider what anti-aging or dark lich magic each of the 'leaders' in Civ are taking in order to get through 6,000-some-odd years of life?

I've always looked at them as spiritual leaders, so to speak. 'Spiritual' not in a religious sense, but in the sense of the culture/country they generally represent. Not as actual flesh-and-blood rulers.

I played the heck out of all of the Civs except Civ5, which I absolutely hate with a passion. I am cautiously pessimistic about Civ-6. It looks so much like 5 that I cannot help but start off not liking it, but, from what I read, they may have corrected the idiotic design decisions that destroyed 5. One of the few Youtubers I can stand to watch for any length of time, Quill18, does a series of Let's Play as Rome.

I wasn't entirely sold on the new art direction but it actually looks really good when it's in motion... the still shots did not do it any justice... or maybe they toned it down a bit after the initial back lash.
Love the new fog of war effect!

Just started watching but it's making me impatient for Oct. 21....  :D

I was just watching his Part 1 late last night...cut it off at about halfway because I want Civ VI and can't stand watching someone else play a game I want to get.

And to think I thought I was the only one who thought the Civ VI shots looked way too cartoony.

Anyway I hated Civ IV and loved Civ V so...to each their own.

You're not the only one, Gus. I think the objects/people are cartoony as well. But I have to hand it to them for going all in with that design choice throughout instead of doing it in different styles. The only thing about 6 that bugs me is that, but it's not a big deal. I'll still buy it, but not until it's on sale (Christmas perhaps?).

How much on sale are you looking for?  Number of places have between $40-$46 already if you pre order......I am guessing it won't be much cheaper than that this year.

Probably about half that. Though I gotta think, too, there's going to be tons of DLC coming out in the next few years.

It's just a matter of getting the purchase in under the radar. But the real truth is, I have way too much gaming-wise to get into without adding 6 to my plate.

Gotcha....going to guess it will be quite some time before it hits the $20 range...but if you have plenty of other things to play, sounds like you have time.

I haven't seen enough yet to warrant a purchase without a sale, to be honest. But I don't love the series like Brant or 'Dawg do. Civ V hit the sweet spot for me.

Before Civ V the last iteration I really loved was Civ II.
Title: Re: Civilization VI!!?!
Post by: BanzaiCat on September 30, 2016, 08:30:18 PM
I owned and played every iteration since the first one, and have loved each and every one of them. Though when V hit my PC, IV seemed utterly underwhelming to me.

Jury's out on 6, I guess. The Let's Play vids I've seen (two, and only partially) make it look pretty and the changes seem interesting. I know I'll get it eventually, just not now.
Title: Re: Civilization VI!!?!

A-ha...case in point for DLC:

The video is pretty good, and he adds a #11 at the end - the World Congress is not included in the base game (maybe you guys knew that, but I did not), but might be included in future DLC.

Not that I'm a huge fan of the World Congress, but it does offer up the World's Fair improvement, which is a big time boost to your Culture in V. I wonder what they'll do with it in VI.

The more I see these cartoony graphics the more I like them, actually. Some of the leaders are caricatures (well, I guess you could argue they ALL are), but I like how they're animated and how expressive they are.

BC....that's an excellent video. The changes look to make this iteration of Civ. something different than those before it. I was on the fence until now. This is one I'll get someday down the road.

Watched the video. How the HELL are they going to balance all of that?

At least some unit stacking is back in. "One unit per hex" killed Civ-5. There is hope for 6.

Does anyone have a decent understanding of the "stacking" arrangement in C6? Form what I have seen and read it could be anything from really neat ( stacking lots of artillery, armor, AA, etc with basic infantry or cav or armor)  to give a combined arms effect, to totally useless, like the Civ-5 system. Escorting settlers, however useful, does nothing to enhance combat or reduce unit spread. I still don't understand why they don't use stacking points. Not perfect, but better than nothing.
Title: Re: Civilization VI!!?!
Post by: Barthheart on October 02, 2016, 01:10:27 PM
My understanding of stacking for combat units is this:

Support type comabt units, arty, aa, bazookas etc. can be stacked/attached to main type combat units, inf, tanks, etc.

At some point you can combine 2, maybe it's 3, inf, tanks, cav, etc units together to make an "army" unit.

Don't be looking for stacks of doom though....

I{believe}that GMG had Mafia 3 the week of release for about same discount. There is still another 11 days or so til release so they might put it back on sale. If a physical copy is what you are after Amazon has it for around 46 if you are a member of Amazon prime and I think if you sign up for a Amazon credit card you get a 50$ gift card which would put the game at around 10 bucks, shipping not included.

Did see $40 from here....according to the page, although sourced from Europe, they indicate not region locked and can be used anywhere....

http://www.cjs-cdkeys.com/products/Sid-Meier%27s-Civilization-VI-CD-Key-For-Steam.html

Region Free

The game keys we are selling are sourced from the EU. They are completely region free and include all languages. This means that since this is a steamworks game, you can activate the key from anywhere in the world. There are absolutely no region locks.

Here's the combat.

10 minutes of war.  Hmmm.. in 5:39 I see a WW2 bazooka guy fighting ancient Mongols (or are those supposed to be renaissance pikemen).  It gets worse as you watch further.  Crossbowmen attacking Strykers.
Is technological mismatch more common in this iteration?

Title: Re: Civilization VI!!?!
Post by: Barthheart on October 13, 2016, 07:56:53 AM
Yeah I think that was a Ren. era pikeman.

Who knows what the setup in those games were, so it's impossible to tell if the tech mismatch is more common or not..
Looks to me like it was a bunch of setup situations to test the old "spearman kills tank" complaint of the early civ games (I, II & III even in IV)

Love the Fog of War map effect.  O0

Also like the vertical launch missile animation for eh nuke sub.   :D

You WILL be able to combine units into a "Corps." Also, you can link settler units with military units, to move them as a group.

I would highly recomment watching Quill18, and his excellent youtube lets plays. He has two, each about 20 episodes in length, at about 30 minutes per episode. This is 20 hours of Civ VI goodness...quite enough to serve as a pretty solid tutorial. Personally, this is a first day purchase. I can't tell you how many hours I have played Civ, in all its variants. Probably #2 all time, behind WoW.

Looking at that release map, It's sad that there are parts of the world where this will not be available. It's also sad that there are parts of the world where it's available, but totally unlikely anyone will actually be playing. Take Mogadishu for instance. Who the hell is going to boot it up over there?

Anyway, to all those brave souls claiming they are going to try to wait on this one...good luck.

When are they going to make intergalactic Civ? It would be a home run.

I envision regular Civ from the dawn of time up through the space age with the ability to discover new worlds and colonize them, eventually to develop them, terraform them, and fight over them, just as you can on earth through the ages. If done properly, it would be a spectacular winner.

IE your classic civ which then becomes a 4x where the winner of the civ portion gets earth as a starting, established colony but dwindling supplies where everyone else is exiled and need to find new homeworlds. So as the winner you get a head start on the galactic portion of the 2nd game but tempered with the knowledge your homeworld is almost tapped out and after say 20 turns you start losing raw materials.

Is there a CIV game that was modded for a Lord of the Rings theme?

I'll go look at Steam...thought the last one had a LoTR mod.

Another question I have

I'm looking at Civ 5 and there is a nice Lord of the Rings mod for it on Steam. However, what if I own the game and it's not a "steam" game but a hard copy of it (Got it at Target for $10!)

Tried looking on Nexus Mods for Civ 5 and nothing really popped up.

Civ IV had Fall From Heaven, a high fantasy mod, but it wasn't particularly LotR.

I wasn't aware you could play Civ 5 without steam regardless of where you bought it.  You didn't have to activate it on steam?  Not answering your question, just curious how that works.

I think you're right RedArgo, however, I returned it the same day I bought it. However, I think I bought just the base game, not the "Complete" version. I did find it on Amazon for $15, however, after installing Skyrim last night, I doubt I'm buying anything anytime soon  O0

I hope to God there's a tutorial for veterans. The early review I read on IGN said it's different enough that veterans can't just dive right in (like I did for 2, 3, 4 and 5). I don't know if I can stay awake through a slow-paced tutorial covering tried-and-true Civ basics.

First or second page of the manual has a picture of what I assume is the Chinese leader. He is wearing a hat with dangling beads. I'm sure when animated, it looks like a hat, but in the Still I see nothing else but a rocket launcher. Probably a LRM 20.

Thanks. So finally read about the actual stacking rules.

Basically only one military unit per hex. A support unit and a civilian unit can stack with it.
Once required tech is researched (Nationalism during the industrial era), you can combine units to circumvent the one military unit rule. Sort of.  You combine two similar units into a corps and it gets +10 to combat strength. Then research mobilisation to be able to combine three units.

Once combined it cannot be broken down. The higher stats are preserved when combining so the gamey strategy is to combine raw units to veterans to beef them up.

No, it appears that there is only one tutorial, but you can play it as either of two different leaders - IOW, 1 tutorial, 2 skins. And it's insufferably slow and boring if you already know how to play. Some chick yaks for a while, and then she tells you to do 1 thing that you already knew how to do years ago (build a city), then she yaks for a while - basically a commercial for the game, trying to make it all story-like - then tells you 1 more thing (build a warrior). I spent probably a little over 5 minutes in it, saw nothing that I hadn't seen a million times in old Civs, and it didn't seem like I was going to start getting into any depth - if any, ever - for at least 15 or 20 minutes.

For informational purposes, I started over as the other country, played about 2 minutes, and it appeared to be identical except you're another country.

So I'm just considering this as "no tutorial for veterans" and plunging in.

EDIT:  Buuuut . . . When I started the game, I got an advisor, and there were two choices of advisor: "New to Civilization" and "New to Civilization 6." So maybe I spoke too soon.

Hmmm. . . . No tooltips to show the hotkeys for unit actions. I've relied on those tooltips forever, even if it's only to remind me and reaffirm what I already knew. You can look up the hotkeys on the pause menu, but . . . no hotkey for fortify til healed? I'd be an idiot to judge the game at this point, but so far I've seen nothing new in the gameplay or UI and two things missing. There is, to be fair, a mouse button for fortify til healed, but if there's a mouse button, why not a hotkey?

You can't zoom out as far as before, and the F10 hex map seems to be gone. In fact, where are all the info hotkeys? Cities? Please be here somewhere, familiar city comparison table.

I haven't gotten yet to the part that is supposed to transform the game, district designation, and I've gotta work in the morning so it won't be tonight. But so far I've seen a bunch of stuff missing, and almost nothing new. But I'm only an hour or so in, so while this has me going  :-\ it's not soon enough for  :'(

Played 20 turns as Ghandi on Prince level.  I was going to tackle the tutorial, but so far at least the Civilopedia has been pretty clear on anything I didn't grok, so I probably won't bother. Some brief observations:

1) Barbarians are a lot tougher.  Where before in the early game a warrior could take one out with a couple of shots, here they are considerably less effective.

2) I think I'm going to like the new system of dealing with City-states.

3) Continents are confusing, since they can be on the same land mass (think the Americas).  It took me a while to find the filter that shows them.  Discovering a new continent is important since it leads to a Eureka moment.

4) I've gotten 3 Eureka moments just by blindly stumbling about.  I'm sure in time I'll intuitively know how to get the ones I want.

5) I came across one Goody Hut and was rewarded with an artifact (the Shroud of Turin in 3280 BC - that's a little immersion breaking) that I could hang on the palace wall to generate points towards the cultural and religious victories.

6) The number of pantheons has been considerably reduced.

7) I met Pericles, and early reports are right - the new diplomacy system is a lot more transparent.

I only had a chance to load it once before I had to head to work, couldn't really actually play so looking forward to tonight,  nut one thing I did motoice was that after choosing to start a game, seemed to take minutes to load and I have a reasonable system.  Maybe just a one time thing, but anybody else seeing that?  I'll try more later.

2 further points from skimming the manual:

pp 98-99 lists all the districts and their optimal placement.  Most are common sense (i.e. industrial district next to a mine or theater district next to a Wonder) so it shouldn't take too long to absorb, but I've got it printed out in the meantime.

I'm not seeing any reference to espionage.  Can someone confirm that it's out (until, I assume, the inevitable DLC)?
Title: Re: Civilization VI!!?!
Post by: tgb on October 21, 2016, 06:31:18 AM
Seems I was wrong about espionage.  It's discussed at length in the Civilopedia.  I guess that means that just because something isn't referenced in a 165 page manual, that doesn't mean it isn't in the game.

I can see I'm going to have to adjust the performance/beauty sliders since my rig is just slightly above the minimum requirements.  30 turns in and turn times are already unreasonably long.

I look forward to read what people say about the game but i have to say that i've always been expecting more from Civilization games since Civiliziaton: Call to Power...I still think we could do a lot more with it and they keep making the same game over and over again (with actual ony small changes).

As usual since Civ 3, i think i'll wait until the complete edition comes out (i still have a lot of CIV IV and CIV V to play till then).

Played another hour of my "learning game" and ran into a few minor things (and one not so minor) that really shouldn't have made it past testing:

1)"Nevermind" is two words, not one.

2) Unless it's buried so deep in the tech tree I couldn't find it, there doesn't seem to be a way to rush production.  Is it in the Civics tree?

3) Depending on your level of zoom, Goody Huts can blend with the ground and be tough to see.  They need to be highlighted more effectively.  I find myself clicking on the notification in order to find them.  And speaking of which -

4) Notifications are persistent from turn to turn unless you rt-click on them.  IIRC, in V they vanished between turns.

5) I'm playing as Peter the Great (Russia) and am cozying up to Gandhi.  I've established my first trade route to Delhi, and sent over a delegation to see if I can get a copy of his recipe for chicken vindaloo.  Shortly thereafter, my trader informs me of a rumor that Russia sent a delegation to Delhi.  No shit, Sherlock.

And finally:

GIVE US A WAY TO TURN DOWN BARBARIAN SPAM!!!!!!!

I don't know what comments you're seeing  :).  Without going into detail, here's a list of everything that's either been completely redone or tweaked from Civ V (not including graphics, because who cares?)

City development - completely redone
Diplomacy - completely redone
City-states - completely redone
Tech tree - split into 2 trees - hard science and civics
Great Leaders - completely redone
Religion - tweaked
Espionage - tweaked
Combat - tweaked
Victory conditions - tweaked (diplomatic victory dropped, replaced by religious victory)
Wonders - tweaked

And that's just off the top of my head.  There are plenty of videos on Youtube documenting the changes, plus I posted a link to the manual somewhere upthread.

To answer your second question, definitely worth it. This is the deepest Civ we've seen since perhaps I or II

I saw a let's play on YT where Quill18 used pins to great effect..identifying potential city founding sites. As more terrain was uncovered, he tweaked their positions, and then prioritized them. Interesting concept here..but one I believe was in previous Civ games.

I purchased the game, have the Aztec civ as a bonus, and completed the tutorial. Having watched perhaps 30 hours of let's plays, I am pretty comfortable with the game mechanics. One thing I did want to mention is the importance of city states. Rather than being their bestie, you can send envoys to each type of city state, and gain a bonus from them. Also...if they are suzerain, you can levy their entire army to fight for you! Good stuff!

I'm not terribly impressed so far, but I have been playing Civ periodically ever since the first one came out, and that's been 25 years. Don't see that stopping. Whether this is the first one that makes me want to stay with its predecessor has yet to be seen, but I doubt it and I would be quite disappointed. Each version has been definitely a better game than the prior version IMO.

But I know already they stripped a bunch of info feedback that has always been in the game, and I very much dislike that, so it's sure possible that this one will be the exception. Also, I like to play, at least when the game is new to me, in an area where I don't have another player nation and can develop my nation at least a bit before I have to war, but this version seems to stick me very close to another player every time, even when I'm playing with a huge map and only 2 or 3 competitors (5 tries so far). Does that mean that they are intentionally sticking nations together, or does "huge" map size not mean what it used to?
Title: Re: Civilization VI!!?!

I started another game, this time as Gandhi, because I wanted to learn the new religious system and work towards the new religious victory condition.

So what happens?  The game puts me in the worst possible position for spreading religion - on an island at the Northernmost part of the map with not another civ or even a city-state to be seen.  Just me and a couple of Barbarian camps. The good news is it gives me an opportunity to get comfortable with the concept of districts and the new city layout system without being bothered by pesky neighbors declaring war every couple of turns.

I'll see how things go now that I've finally discovered Sailing, but I have a feeling this is a non-starter.

Loved everything so far, the city states and their missions, the civic cards, builders who build straight away but then disappear, Sean bean, pummelling barbarians and hunting down their camps to stop the spam, the fact that it asked me the time when I booted it up, now the game tracks my time and it's night on the game including cicadas an torches on my cities - all beautifully detailed, going to bed dreaming of killing Kongo

I've got an interesting story to tell about my attempted purchase of CIV VI.

About 10 days ago I was searching the web for a discount pre-release price and I came across cjs-cdkeys.com which offered a price of US$ 47.08 and, on the product page it stated,

  "Region Free
The game keys we are selling are sourced from the EU. They are completely region free and include all languages. This means that since this is a steamworks game, you can activate the key from anywhere in the world. There are absolutely no region locks."

So I figured, “Great” and placed my order. After placing my order, I tried to claim my promise Steam Key and was informed that the key would be available approximately 24 hours prior to release and that I would be notified when it was available via e-mail.

Well... Thursday morning, less than 13 hours to release, I still hadn't received the promised e-mail so I resorted to sending a message to customer service...

“Roywfw
20 Oct, 16:13 BST
Here we are less than 13 hours from release and I still haven't received an email notifying me of my steam key availability. This is in spite of the account status saying that it's shipped and also there has been no delay in CJS-CD Keys charging my credit card. What's up?”

A few hours later, I received this pleasant and accommodating reply,

“Cecil M. (CJS CD Keys - Support Ticket Center)

Sorry you are being delayed. I will chase this order for you and we will update you as soon as possible by email.

and a few hours after that I received this e-mail,

“Hi!

Okay folks... I've got to say that I'm not too impressed with your organization!
On the order page for Civilization VI you can find the following statement...
"Region Free
The game keys we are selling are sourced from the EU. They are completely region free and include all languages. This means that since this is a steamworks game, you can activate the key from anywhere in the world. There are absolutely no region locks."
and yet when I tried to use the Steam Key that you sent me, Steam's response was, "Sorry, but the following items are not available for purchase in this country. Your purchase has been cancelled.". I thought that I'd give you a chance to correct this situation before I took advantage of the opportunity to write a review that you so generously offer (not to mention the various fora that I frequent).”

Seriously??? Stupid me... all this time I thought that they were the supplier... and I only get one response on the subject?

Upon checking my account status, I discovered that it was now marked “refunded” although my credit card account has yet to reflect such and I also noted that “Region free... absolutely no restrictions” has been changed to say that it's only good for Europe.

Needless to say, I won't be using CJS CD Keys for any future purchases and since there are several reputable and reliable options available, I would suggest that you all use suitable caution.

Yes CJS CD Keys is one store I won't use, have heard too many negative stories.  My main places are cdkeys, gamedeal, Kinguin, and Gamesplanet.  Recently I have noticed that a lot of key stores that offer pre orders are more and more EU region locked even if their sites say differently so I have been very cautious in pre ordering from them.  However, I will say that I had a couple of these issues myself from the listed sites, but they immediately refunded my money when I brought the issue to their attention so I did appreciate their support, even if their advertising was at times suspect:)

Sorry you are being delayed. I will chase this order for you and we will update you as soon as possible by email.

and a few hours after that I received this e-mail,

IDK if you have decided to repurchase the game or not but I got it for 9.99 at Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/Meiers-Civilization-Online-Game-Code/dp/B01FG4VF62/ref=sr_1_1_twi_sof_2?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1477123259&sr=1-1&keywords=civilization%2B6&th=1

So give me your honest opinions those of you who have the game...

Forget for a moment that Civ6 is still nice, new, and shiny, can you see yourself still playing this game 6 months from now?

Well, I've been playing Civ since 1991 so...yeah.  ^-^

Absolutely. This is by far the best Civ version to date. It is very deep...much deeper than any other version, with many more and different strategies you can try.

The civics cards alone hugely increase gameplay. In Civ V, if you chose Honor, you went all the way through, then chose another branch. Here, you are free to switch back and forth, as needed. Very cool. Also..if you do have a civic that you use, oftentimes there are "legacy" bonuses...keep a civic long enough, and you KEEP the benefit for the remainder of the game, even after you switch. This can happen more than once.

Anyone thinking that Civ VI is not different enough than V should watch this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKCYmRF_DMQ).  It's a pretty good summary of the differences between the two.

That's a great video and it definitely influenced me.  My verdict is to get the game but I'm waiting for a significant price drop.  Thanks tgb!

To everyone else;  Thanks for the opinions.  Based on your collective input it seems Civ6 is a must have game worth adding to a gaming library.

Someone mentioned above about the looooooooooooooong load times - and I confirm that.

I was a bit disappointed the Greeks have the same colour as my nation...makes it a bit awkward looking around the map

As for the game itself, I wasn't a fan of the art when I first saw it, but it's grown on me and I like it a lot. Gameplay seems "familiar" whilst being different. Districts add complexity. IMO Diplomacy seems to work better. Barbarians seem more of a threat (just coming from Civ V they hardly bothered me, allowing me to attack).

I don't know an awful lot about the new mechanics. It took me some time to work out last night how to increase my housing. I researched fishing boats so I could fish. Whilst I read it saying "Cities by the sea", I didn't think it actually meant the actual city had to be by the sea...I thought it was just your border had to be by the sea. So I spent a while trying to work out why I couldn't build fishing boats.

Of course the Civlopedia is fantastic as always.

So, in short, I'm fumbling around but it's bloody good fun.  O0

RPS has a review up-pretty much posative except it mentions the A.I. seems even worse than previous titles.

Imperfect AI is the fly in the ointment, as it is for the vast majority of 4X games. It’s a shame that the flaws in that department are so apparent at times because in almost every other regard, this is an innovative and extremely thoughtful take on a series and formula that feel as old as PC gaming itself. Where Civ VI makes changes to that formula, they are improvements across the board, some bolder than others but all vital to the overall structure of a game that understands how to build compelling, overlapping strategic systems.

That was me....it got a little better after the first load, but still a little longer than I prefer...hopefully with some future optimization it gets better.....long load and AI turn times is one thing that turns me off on games, but will be making exception to learn this one:)

I knew after about four solid hours that Civ V would be my least played Civ game ever, and it was.

I know after about the same time on Civ VI that it's going to rival Civ II for longevity.   It's almost as good on a first impression as Civ V was disappointing.

Not amused...not amused one little bit.

Going along, minding my own business. Investigating. Building. Expanding. Making friends. About 130 turns in and bloody Saladin declares war on me.

(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/20161022215414_1_zpsxzecbv6i.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/20161022215414_1_zpsxzecbv6i.jpg.html)

Capital surround and within a very short space of time, destroyed (or should I say stolen!) - and all my districts destroyed that they rode through.

As it happens - I was able to build units in my other two cities. One of them was to the south of my capital and was coming under heavy attack and the other was north and not being bothered by enemy units.

In both cities I had a few units and with careful use of movement and attacking from decent terrain, I was able to hold off the attacks on the south. Eventually, I managed to have enough of an advantage to move most of my northern units to the capital and move some of my units from the south up to the capital...and this was the result....

(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/20161022225720_1_zpsctdvz8uw.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/20161022225720_1_zpsctdvz8uw.jpg.html)

Look at his miserable bloody face. He started it and he's got a face like a smacked arse.  :buck2:

Bearing in mind about 5 turns previous I was looking at making peace where neither side was getting any benefit but peace...I weathered the storm. But I was sweating for a while.

This all occurred over 20 or 30 turns. I had been neglecting my military somewhat, focussing on other more peaceful game due to it being fairly early.

One other thing. As I had gained favour with one of the city states because I had 6 envoys there, they declared war on Saladin also - that's what happens when you have the ear of a city state. Also, I could've "rented" their units for 30 turns for about 300 gold which I was tempted to do...but never did. Before I did get peace with Saladin, I lost the city state's favour because Greece got more envoys in there.

I'm finding the tactical AI to be enjoyable. It seems to know when it is outmatched. It will withdraw units from combat when they take too much damage and try to heal them up before bringing them back to the frontline. It will also seek peace when it becomes clear it can't win.

Anyway, after about 3 hours, I'm having fun and it's definitely just as addictive as every other civ I have ever played. Nothing revolutionary, but another good game by Sid.

Overall there are a two oddities that are killing the experience for me: AI alliance behavior and combat mechanics.

For example: AI 1 and AI 2 are at war. I declare war on AI 2. Both AI 1 and 2 denounce me and label me a warmonger...wtf?

For combat mechanics: I've had attack helicopter's shot down by catapult units. AT Soldier units (2-man bazooka teams) are entirely too poweful and can hold off Infantry and Attack Helicopters. The game needs to do a better job distinguishing unit types. It feels like its just a numbers game right now. Artillery is also underwhelming.

Yeah, it is really annoying.  Telling the spammer to stop converting your cities has absolutely zero effect as well.  They will agree, and then continue to send missionaries anyway. Declaration of War to stop, even after denouncement, just brings massive warmongering penalties from neighbors and chain war declarations.

You can reconvert your cites though, but you must have a great prophet to do so.  Also, after a war declaration, killing the missionaries reduces the influence of their religion in your cities.  Just be prepared to fight a pretty strong coalition of neighbors if you want to go that route.

Nope. It was described as a "Surprise Declaration of War". In fact, I had done more to piss off Greece who didn't go to war with me. I was vying for the plaudits of a City State as was Greece and they kept telling me to leave their cities alone....but of course I didn't because I had already invested 4 envoys.

To be completely honest with you I thought they had just modelled the Middle East faction well  :buck2:

Got my capital Paris back, rebuilding (repairing) districts and building Medieval walls for protection. I have an uneasy relationship with Greece (whom I'm trying to buy off) and Saladin is still unfriendly with me...so my guard, which I let down, is up.

I guess I'll have to drop my envoys for the City State otherwise I'm going to be at war with Greece - which I'm just not prepared for I don't think.

So I timed the load. Actually, it seems I'm just an impatient sod. It takes 1 minute on my SSD drive to load my game. There doesn't appear to me (at least at this point) that there's any increase depending on current content.

What I mean by that is that when I first started my game and I was loading on various occasions with a couple of units and one city it seemed to take just as long as when loading my newest save, where there are a plethora of units on 3 different factions and I have 3 cities with lots of districts.

I read somewhere that people with load/turn time issues where able to turn off AI movement options and saw a little increase in performance, although not everybody did.  And they seemed to also mention the larger the map you use, the longer the time to load.  I am hopeful that after they fix any glaring bugs, optimization will be next on their list.

Afaik the agendas are on the diplomacy screen, for instance Phillip of Spain hates people spreading religion on his continent and every ai has a second hidden one but I think it can be picked up on via diplomacy messages - a lets play from quill against Phillip had him receiving messages about how small his empire was and figured the second one was being liking to be the biggest empire on the map - going against the agendas certainly leads to friction and war

Nope, newbie here....do tell.

Every leader has two agendas - one open and one secret - that govern their attitudes to you. Cleopatra, for example, likes other civs with a strong military, and will get pissed off if you are weaker. You can see the agendas on the diplomacy screen.  As you have more positive diplomatic relationships with another civ (envoys, trade and the like) eventually you can drill down and find out what the secret agenda is.  Espionage helps also, but you don't get that right away.

Also on the diplomacy screen is a rating that says relationship (or something like that).  It is pretty vague with things like neutral and angry, but if you click on the button you'll see a breakdown, Paradox-style, of everything affecting it.

Hope that helps.

Actually it was pretty easy to play.  Navigating the menus and moving units were done all with the D-pad.  Then you'd hit the 'A' button to confirm your orders.  I've never played the PC version so I am not sure how the Nintendo version compares but the game was a rich strategy game so I don't feel the console version was dumbed down.

Well I was running short of gold and one way to recoup was to lose some military units. I could not find a list of units with details of their upkeep cost and what they would return to my bank should I retire them apart from selecting a unit and then using the bottom control - but that only shows a clickable list to jump to individual units.

That is one thing I needed but couldn't find. I should say I'm specifically not saying it's not in the game, just I couldn't find it.

The other thing was finances - again linked to units. I could see my income and expenditure - but there was nothing on their about units so iirc I couldn't find out how much my units were costing me.

I gotta be honest though - it didn't detract from my huge enjoyment playing the game!

That's what I'm trying to ascertain.  Ever since Civ III i've been cautious about buying each new iteration on day one.  I remember too well the frustrations of the out of the box experience until the second patch came out.  I don't want to repeat history but it does sound like based on our community reviews that the out of box experience is fairly pleasing.

I can't say whether it's worth £40 or not for anyone.

All I can say is I'm having a blast playing it. It's great fun and similar enough to Civ V to not need a huge amount of reading up and investment in investigation (Civlopedia is fantastic) and different enough to be brilliant fun.

That's all I've got.

I agree. Playing my first game, as America, on a huge map and marathon game length. I am 3rd, 5th, 5th, and 6th in rankings amongst all the players..but I am finally getting my production values better.

This ain't no Civ V pushover..this is a challenging game, even on the easier settings. Having said that..I never was a real micro-manager.

^ I would agree that this seems more challenging. I've certainly had to deal with Barbarians more than I EVER had to in Civ V, but also other nations trying you out, diplomacy and ways to annoy neighbours - all add to the difficulty.

I would also add to my last statement that I had Civ V since it was launched and apparently played 40 hours and on another website I said I couldn't see me buying this because the Civ games (or the later ones at least) always seemed to be more an exercise in patience as you hit the Next Turn button to get closer to whatever it was you were building.

This does seem to have some purpose. Some of that could obviously be my desire to dig a bit deeper in this title, but then perhaps that's the game making me want to do it where the last one never. I do tend to do a lot more thinking about what I'm building, where that build is taking me, and what I need. Currently, I'm 233 turns in and not anywhere near bored and I've been doing a lot of pontificating.

One example now is that you need to build builders for everything. They "disappear", or at least one of them does (you get 3 in a unit) when you build a farm or improve a plantation or such. So you have to continually build builders - they aren't there for the duration. A great mechanic. At first I was like "WTF did my builders go" and thinking it was a pita - but it adds to the deliberation of what to build because your cities need housing and amenities so you need builders to build farms and improve plantations etc

Everything seems to be much more tied in and more complex for it.

Superb fun. This may well be the Only Civ game I ever complete.

I'd like to hear about those who hated Civ V due to hexes and no stacking (I'm not one of them). Does Civ VI appeal to you?  The game only allows limited stacking options.

I have no hate for hexes, but, no stacking, and the general dreary looking maps of Civ V, have led me to have 2 hours of play on V.  And that will be all.  The fact that VI has no stacking is a severe limitation in my view.  The ability to research limited stacking may alleviate that, but, we shall see.

Just out of curiosity, why is a lack of stacking such a pet peeve and outright game breaker for some people? I don't see why this is such a critical feature for enjoyment of the game.

I bought the game, but then was gone camping all weekend, so I haven't had time to check it out yet.  Hopefully this week  :)

I'm fine with no stacking, or limited stacking, I just hope the new AI can handle it better than in Civ5 (which I played a ton).  AI could not handle one unit per tile at all and made war as an easy out if I wasn't winning one of the other paths.

I don't think it's a big problem either as it does add a form of battlefield formation (archers behind etc). However, i prefer the system of armies like in Legion/Sparta, Call to Power and Total War games.

The game also allows for combining units into larger formations and you can link certain units like great generals to units. As noted, you can drop in ranged units behind the ground troops.

Just another take on the whole stack no stack thing over at Civilization.  Perhaps the programmers there simply can't make an AI capable of handling stacks or even limited stacks so they decided to can the whole stacking thing.  Then you market it as a great new feature.

I'm not trying to cause trouble, just looking at the issue from a marketing/manufacturing angle.

Because it makes the game a cake walk. IF...and that's a huge IF...the A.I. could actually combine arms and challenge you it would be a none issue. Hexes and lack of stacking looks good on paper...but it was stacking that gave you a challenge from the A.I. in previous versions.

The ONLY way to lose at Civ V is by a science, influence victory where the A.I. gets cheat bonus's. Set the game on "conquest victory" and it's about as interesting as watching paint dry. Very much contrary to those DOOM stacks in Civ4 that actually COULD destroy you.

Same here, just got back from cottage closing last night and this morning was the first chance to try the game. Not much time in it so far as I had some messing about to do to get it to run. Seems I was having the same problems some others had where Windows Defender was blocking the game from running, without any notification of such actions. Anyway, simple fix found on Steam forums about just excluding the entire Steam folder and all works well.

Now, I'm also running it on a rig that frankly I was sure wouldn't work and I'd be screwed until I could get it upgraded. Very minimum settings so far to see it run... I'll slow boost the settings until my machine bogs down. I case anyone else is worried about specs here's what I've got:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @2.33 GHz <- Pretty sure this is waaaay below the minimum spec'ed.
8 GB ram
NVidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Like what I'm seeing so far... but again not very far into the game.

As my friend Tuna pointed out to me many times, "You played Warlock for a million hours and that's one unit per hex."  And it's true, I have played Warlock for a million hours (ok, Steam says 540, but, whatevs).  And on anything but a small map, the movement of any force over four or five guys was tedious.  And slow.  And a pain in the ass.  And subject to losing a valuable unit out of the fog of war.  And a pain in the ass.  And slow.  Did I mention tedious?

Now, out of curiosity, why is a stack a pet peeve and outright game breaker for some people?

Sorry. Can't help you there. I honestly don't care either way. I can see the pros and cons to both methods. That being said, can't say I have seen many people arguing vociferously against a stack. I only tend to see it the other way around.

Anyway, I'm surprised to see this as the response. I never really played enough Warlock to be able to compare, but my games of Civ never involved THAT many units to where it was incredibly tedious to maneuver them. I've felt that way in certain Tiller games, or the War in the West and East series...heck, even in the Decisive Campaigns games, but can't say this is something that has ever irked me in Civ.

I don't think the stacking issue is about moving units.  I think it's an artifact of disliking stacks of doom from previous civ iterations.

AI issues aside (which aren't trivial), stacking is simply more immersive for me.  I hate the look of infantry in this hex, tank in this one, arty over here, etc.  Firaxis had a nice opportunity with the old Alpha Centauri to continue to improve the combat in the series, but they never went down that road, and took a step back in V.

VI is a shuffle step forward, but not even close to my jam these days.  Also, I realize I'm late to the art direction bashing party, but I will throw in a wtf on that account too  >:D

I had the opportunity to watch a Civ V game that some Grogs were playing one night.  I watched for about two hours.  In that two hours, I did not see any great movement of units, as it was the first 30 or 40 turns of the game.  What overwhelmingly struck me was how unattractive the game was to my eyes.  There was no fog of war.  As an observer, I was privy to the entire map.  Everything looked grey and the colors were muted.  Add to that the fact that any hex and counter game I have ever played, admittedly that's not many, has always turned in to a move a jillion units one at a time fest and I have no love for Civ V.  The two hours I watched are the only two hours Steam says I have in the game.

My hope for VI was that they would allow stacking, even in a limited form, from the outset.  Upthread, someone mentioned that researching certain Techs will give you that ability to a maximum of three.  I would be ok with that.  I still won't like it, but, I can't play IV forever.  Or maybe I can......

On the contrary. Having an A.I. properly combine arms is the more difficult task. As it is, no stacking means no stacking to defend cities. So you got your one unit in yours and the A.I> may or may not have their one unit. Properly combing arms ---3 to 5 units...will take a city. The a.I. can't...so it shows up with one.....next two turns....one.......in rare ocassions two. You simply leave your one unit who will assure defense...nurse you 5 unit army to take city after city. Game over.

In fact...I'm pretty sure Civ V's A.I. hasn't changed from Civ 4's. It just moves the stack as it moves single units. The difference mainly being the single unit can't challenge you but the stack can. Now, there are mods for V that allow 3 unit stacks to improve things but sadly the A.I. doesn't use them to defend so your back to square one.

As for movement....say compared to Warlock...is really unit cost. You can afford but 4 or 5 mostly so that's what you move in Civ...in warlock you can afford many more.

GR, you're the first person to mention that to me.  Is it really that simple?  You don't have to spam units to take over the world?  Or have a bunch of cities?
Title: Re: Civilization VI!!?!
Post by: ghostryder on October 24, 2016, 11:10:35 PM
Mechanically you need enough cities to support your 5 unit army--after that no need really unless there's an important choke point you want to defend.

Doom stacks have their own issues-I'm not blind to it---but on the upside of giving the A.I. a chance--they just make more sense in this type of game where spear chuckers can kill a Panzer....abstractly yeah if there's 30,000 spearmen on a tank sure...I can buy that. So in that regard it makes more sense than a one vs on one.

This is why people expecting Panzer General or Panzer corp type battles given the no stacking and hexes were sorely disappointed---not only did the A.I. fall short--but all things aren't equal with civ games vs a WWII title---your battling across centuries many times.

The real answer to the problem that has plagued the civ games is they are too abstract. Without going into platoon, battalions and Corps size there's no way to compromise between single unit and stacks. It works much better with monsters...say the Fall From Heaven mod for Civ4. Titans and Godzilla or whatnot---that fits the abstract scale and time moreso.

What they really need to do is invest the dev time in A.I. Typically your give about 2 weeks---and i can tell you from experience a really good A.I. would take a couple years. However if done modularly that one time investment could be used in all future titles---but devs just don't think in these terms ----unless they're developing a chess game where it's expected to be good.

When Saladin DoW'd my arse, he turned up on my doorstep with enough units to surround my capital. We had open borders, so no alarm bells were going off on the number of units around my capital.

Also - he went after my capital even though I had 2 other cities - one north and one south. I don't know if that's a tactical AI move or not - all I can say is out of my 3 cities, with 1 being closer to Saladin, he went for my capital which was further away.

I have also seen the AI break away to heal.

He turned up with a mix of Chariots, foot soldiers and slingers.

For anyone who played Civ V for any length of time...did the barbarians come along with you through the eras? I never noticed in the time I played it but I noticed that the Civ VI the barbarians turned up with swordmen...which even I don't have  :o

They really need to tweak the religious spam. The AIs are flooding the map with missionaries and apostles. I get that they might be going for a religious victory but something is out of whack. Plus, if they wipe out your religion in your cities, there is no way to bring it back (and no way for you to get a religious victory if that's what you're going for).

I agree but there really isn't any ai combined arms in CiV is there?  Unless I'm missing something my 200+ hours of game time failed to show me I don't think there is an ai that successfully uses combined arms tactics in CiV.

That's my point I was trying to make on getting rid of the stacking feature from Civ <= ver.4  It's far easier to not bother with the combined arms ai in a single unit stack than to program an ai capable of handling multi-unit stacks.

In fact now that I think about it I don't think I've ever seen proper combined arms tactics being used by the ai in any civ game unless it was a user made mod (E.g. El Justo's "Age of Imperialism" for Civ III)

What is the point of "combined arms" in Civ anyway? Its not like you get any bonuses for having infantry supported by armor or cavalry. Civ has always been about spamming the most powerful unit. This is not a wargame.

"Combined arms" might be something of a misnomer.  There are techs that allow you to combine two like units into a Corps, and 3 into an Army, with the new values being greater than the sum of the individuals.  You can also attach "support" units like medics or catapults, but I haven't gotten far enough to find out if they count as one of the 2 or 3.

Just curious any good strategy guides especially about what kind of units you should build early and in what order?  Do you create a lot of warriors to protect your city or do you focus on expansion?  Some kind of mix?

I googled on release day and then realised the most fun I've ever had with a game was civ 2 and learning it all for myself, however what I did say was -

Old civ veterans had a near script like start apparently of monument, scout, scout for the first 3 units and then a few other improvements and a builder

The order for 6 seems to be another warrior first then scout and either scout or another warrior, because once a barbarian scout runs home to tell on you (which I think is a great mechanic) you're in for some trouble

Then granary and monument

I just love finding this shit out myself.

I agree a second warrior unit is worth it due to the Barbs kicking around. You can beat a barbarian unit with one Warrior and then heal the unit. But by the time it's healed another Barbarian unit will be there. Should you come across two, you're done for and you WILL come across two. They were quite feisty at creating slingers too - much earlier than I was able to do so.

Remember the old axiom of the best defense.  The most effective way to deal with barbarian spam is to create a Slinger (for the Eureka), and then, rather than hanging around your capitol, send them out to explore.  Destroying camps is the most effective way to cut back on Barbarians.

I am starting out monument settler settler settler settler in my current game and saving my pennies to buy military units. There has been some excitement, but it looks like I pulled through the tough part and will survive with a really fast start.

I'm having trouble firing this up tonight...anyone else got any issues?

It takes a while before it gets to the Resume Game screen and then when I click that, old Sean Bean gives his speech. Normally that takes about a minute...but I'm having to End Task on Civ VI because it just sits there saying it's loading waaay after his speech is over.

Rebooted machine and broadband even though machine says everything is fine and broadband says 220Mb speeds - still no joy.

Cana't load my game  :'(

What speed ? Who you with ?

I'm getting a bit lost here.

Ages and ages and AGES ago, I earned a Great Writer. I saw that I had to "place him" with the appropriate great works. I think I read about a Library or something.

Anyway I've got 2 issues...

Things have progressed in my game where I'm getting slightly lost. 290 turns in and I'm not sure why I cannot do certain things - like placing the Great Writer - or like building ships to harvest fishing. I've had harbours for some time now and I can create 3 types of ship - but no trading ships. I've found other nations across the water and want to trade - but the traders I'm producing in my cities are land traders...not going across oceans. I have lots of "naval" type research completed...so why no traders.

I think the "jump in and play" tactic has run it's course. Even the normally very helpful Civlopedia has run it's course with these particular issues.

Great Writer: Haven't earned one yet myself but when he is selected it tell what he's looking for. Unlike Civ V, they are not all the same, each great person does something slightly different. Go to the civilopedia and type his name in the search it will tell you about him specifically.

Fishing boats are made by builders. Had me scratching my head at first as well. But with a builder selected you should see the fishing net appear of the fish or crabs in the water.

Same for traders. Just build a trader and if you have the range he will just jump in the water and sail across the water.

  • At some point I thought he needed more than a Library but that he needed a Great Library. So I started building one - but it's gone. It's not being built in any of my 4 cities. It's not even showing up in any of my 4 cities build list or potential build list...it's just disappeared...what would make that happen? Has someone else beat me to it? Re the Great Writer:

If you haven't placed any Great Writings, Art or Music yet, you have one free slot in your palace.  March the Great Writer to your capitol, and you should see a writing icon light up on his command bar.

If you have already placed something in the capitol, you have to build a Theater District in one of your cities, and then the appropriate building (library, art museum, etc).  When you've done that, selecting the Great Writer will highlight all the Theater Districts you have with available display space.  March your Writer into one of the lighted hexes, and that icon should appear.  Once you've placed your first Great Work, there will be an icon of a picture frame at the top of the screen.  Clicking on it displays all your Great Works and shows how much space you have available.

When placing Great Paintings, you get a bonus for hanging three paintings with the same theme by three different artists together in the same building.

As to where the Great Library went, since it's a Wonder I'm guessing someone else beat you to it, and you didn't catch the message (the messaging system in VI really sucks.  I've missed several important messages myself).

About traders...look and see how long each potential route is. A route of five turns, generating 5 gold is better than a route of ten turns generating 8 gold.

I thought I had created the right environment for the Writer to thrive.

I have built a Campus District with a library in my capital. There's also an Entertainment Complex District there. I can't build the Theatre Square until I have 13 pop (I have 11)...thing is, I've had this guy for something like 100 turns!!

In one of my other cities, I have an Entertainment complex with an Arena. I also have a Campus with a University and a Library. Can't put him there.

In another city, I have the Entertainment Complex and I can build a Theatre - so I will do that next, see if I can place him.

Thanks for the tips - but I know how the mechanism works - I have already placed a Scientist. I just couldn't work out what I had to do for the Writer.

My Great Writer is Ovid. It says..."Must occupy a District or Wonder with a free slot of the Great Work type". My problem is finding one to make. For example, The Great Library says +2 Great Works of Writing Slots...but I can't build a Great Library anywhere. Not only cannot I not build one, they're not even on the list and the point was, there was one on the list and I was building it but it's gone. I was wondering if I missed a message that said someone else created the Great Library and if that makes it disappear...I'm not going mad - I was building it.

None of my cities has any buildings either allowed to be built or even "greyed out" which will create Great Writing slots.

I think this is all moot anyway - I've just been Surprise DoW'd by Greece now.  :knuppel2: And their military is considerably more advanced than mine.

Thanks for the info on the fisherman. For some reason, I thought in the previous game you had to build a fishing boat which required a harbour etc, etc...was that in CiV IV...because now you mention it, I think in Civ V you just needed a builder and a port.

One last thing if I may - is Faith whacked? I have 3205 Faith - by FAR the biggest collection of resource (Science at 54, Culture at 48, Gold at 700) and can't do a damn thing with it.

I'm just very confused as to where the Great Library went. I know I was building it because I remember thinking "He won't go in a library - perhaps as he's a Great Writer, he needs a Great Library"...but it has actually gone with no site of it anywhere.

It's entirely possible my life will be short lived anyway - I have Greek Knights banging on my doors.

Civ V did indeed have you build actual fishing boats. This is a change in VI.

For faith if you want a religion you need to Buy a prophet with faith or gold. Go to the great person screen and you can see the prophets available. If one isn't you need to wait for the next to appear.

Not sure if you need a holy site but probably. Haven't got a prophet yet myself too busy doing other stuff.

The Entertainment District is there to provide Amenities, and the Campus to provide Research.  They may both have buildings that allow you to place Great Writings, but it's possible they don't.

The Great Library is a Wonder, so only one is permitted per game.  If someone else built it, it will vanish from the build menu.  If you want it that badly your only option is to capture the city in which it was built. You can only build it in a city in which you have already built a Campus District and a Library.

Previous Civ's had had a list of what Wonders had been built and where, but that seems to be missing from this version.  Don't ask me why.

Survived the onslaught of the Greeks. It wasn't so much an onslaught as a poke and a prod. I think Saladin brought him to his knees by stealing Athens from him...he then sued for peace from me - giving me very favourable terms when I was trying to get him to make peace previously, for several turns, and he wouldn't have it.

I had lots of Amenity problems - I think due to war weariness as it all but disappeared when Greece made peace.

Just realised (after I was plundered about 100 turns ago when Saladin stole Paris) that I needed to build builders to fix the damaged areas on my city. Also discovered that Amenities are automatically distributed through your lands from Luxury Resources.

I was under the impression Luxury Resources in your land contributed to the city they were found in - but they're not - Luxury Resources create amenities and they are auto-distributed through your cities and applied where needed. Resources from buildings and wonders are for the specific city.

I maybe wrong - I think it was in the comments section on a quill lets play - apparently the optimum number of opening cities to build is 4 because that's the max that luxuries and resources are shared across - over that and there's penalties

I am up to 2040 in my first game. So far I would say that the game is slick, the AI is pathetic and there is a real lack of information in the UI and manual about a lot of basic things. Ought to be a great game after a few patches. The AI does not do unit upgrades well.  There are poor to non-existent explanations about the workings of luxuries, some wonders (national park comes to mind), poor feedback/notices and lack of data on assorted units and system interactions. All in all, a typical AAA release these days for a game that cannot afford to fail and will be fixed eventually. Right now, the joy of learning the new game makes up for other failings. That will not last forever.

Oh, and the combat system, while sadly deficient, is better than Civ5. A pity. It could easily have been so much more.

And the diplomacy system is just bad.

So yeah, the game is really bad in several ways...buggy, too. But,it's going to be great. Honest!  Really! Trust me! Really really!

What exact model Mac, year (inc. early/mid/late), and processor do you have? Many cam be boosted past Apple's 'official' max RAM amount. For most of the MBPs you can access the RAM by removing the bottom cover and for iMacs before 2012 there are two small grill covers in the bottom you can remove to pop out the old RAM. You can get a stick of 4GB for about $30. Replace one of the 2GB sticks to get 6 or go nuts and go for 8.

Damn. I have started perhaps half a dozen games, and haven't completed ANY. The Goddamned AI insists on declaring war on me, by at least two countries, fairly early in the game.

This last game, I had four cities, two with encampments, and EIGHT military units. My military is by far the strongest in the game. I did this at a tremendous sacrifice to my usual start, which is to try to pump out settlers and builders...I figured, wrongly, that a massive military would be a deterrent.

Nope. This game gets shelved until this is fixed.

Oh...this last game was on the dead easiest setting...and it gets worse as you go higher in difficulty.

I really think it is a matter of which combinations of leaders you get and their agendas. My prince level game I'm friends with America and just went medieval on Pedro and his missionary spam. Most things seem okay at the moment. I have some frustration with the UI and the auto advancing units thing which has cost me units in battles by having the wrong thing move. Also took a bit to figure out battering rams are support only units and you just attach them to front lines to add a buff in hitting cities.

No one is attacking me in my Test Game at Prince. Gorgo may change that soon, but she's busy.
I haven't played long enough to judge the AI, but there is a lot of negative comments on the Steam forum, with examples. Apparently it's so terrible there is a "Guide" to improve the AI that does so by eliminating parts of the game! For example, he says the AI doesn't know how to deal with walls in city, so his solution is to remove them from the game. Has anyone else appreciated this?

I don't remember what level I'm playing on...I think it's Prince. I have had the AI seemingly DoW on me for no reason...but as pointed out earlier in the thread, their "agendas" may influence their motivations towards you.

For example, and I'm not saying it's the case, but perhaps one of the AI players agendas was to be strong militarily. They see you building an army and decide to put the flame of ambition out. But they can't on their own because they're not strong enough, so they form a pact with someone else to kick your arse

I'm not saying that's happening - just that it's possible. I'd like to think that was the case.

I've been DoW'd twice in my 300+ turns.

Not sure what they meant by "AI doesn't understand walls" but I watched an AI attack a city state that had walls and he brought battering rams and then siege towers to the fight. Seems to understand it to me...

The AI is still not good at combat, I'll agree, but it seems to be about where V was so hopefully they can improve it from here.

As for the random AI war declarations, you can see why they are pissed at  you. Do to the spill screen and click the bubble that says "relationship" (or something similar. It will show you a list of positive and negative modifiers to your relationship. It will even give clues as to how to improve, or worsen, your standing with them. At first these are vague but as time goes on ther reasons become clearer, ie you'll see -4 because some unknown reason, then after you've known them for awhile, and maybe the diplomatic corps tech, you'll see -4 because you have a different government... or something similar.

To make friends early, as soon as you meet someone send them an envoy, cost 25 coins, right away. Then when you get diplomatic corps tech, build an embassy in their Capitol. It won't garrentee friendship but it does make a better chance.

Well, I made 2 mistakes

Firstly I wanted to wipe out the Kongo but he was the suzerain of Toronto, a massive city state between me and him who had a crap ton of units and they were surrounded by mountains funnelling me through a mountain pass guarded by archer units who picked me off as I tried to advance, it took a long time to get through and take the city. This opened the way to the Kongo who simply seemed to have an endless supply of their special units that took no penalty fighting in jungle - the ai had built up their cities surrounded by jungle - it was a lost cause, although in the end Kongo sued for peace with no loss of cities - 600 years had passed and I felt the game has gotten away from me - I had no tech, no culture - lesson learned, start new game with new battle knowledge and see how we get on, it's only 1130pm what could go wrong

Second mistake, chose Greece (not the mistake) on a smaller map and almost immediately found Rome, India and Sumeria, the problem with Rome is he likes people to expand, the problem with the map is there's not a lot of room without going through Rome - at least he stopped complaining after his first 2 cities fell - hoplites rock - there's one Roman city left, India hate me but I'm happier with the way the game is shaping up, the mistake? Playing until 4 am!

This has been a problem for me since the first Civilization. I just quit a game of Civ6 after receiving notice that China was moving from the Modern Age into the Atomic Age. I had just fielded my first musket units after being in a long war with Crazy Monty and German Redbeard. It seems like every time you get involved in a long war you end up falling behind in science.

In previous civs I've always built at least a fledgling science growth with libraries and the like but ignored it here in 6 - it's my fault for concentrating only on military units, I don't blame the game at all - I think the answer is a few dedicated military cities and a few dedicated science cities - that's what I'm trying with Greece anyway

2nd run fairs better - i have my 4 cities, romes 4 cities and Delhi - Ghandi was running away with the science race so we decided to peg him back a step or two, ill take his next major city and then sue for peace - almost lost rome to barbarians but the garrison held on, i need to clear out some camps and then we can get to building some decent improvements

Quite a negative article. I don't have Civ VI so I can't agree or disagree.

i dont see the negativity - just a passing mention that trying to win by domination is hard, not fun, and not necessarily what the game is about as IRL

Fall 2016 patch dropping right now. 2.1 GB update on Steam.

Quote
A new update is available for Sid Meier’s Civilization VI today. The “Fall 2016 Update” will automatically install when starting the Steam client; if it doesn’t install automatically, please restart Steam.

This update adds DirectX 12[en.wikipedia.org] support to Civilization VI, starting with AMD cards and NVIDIA Maxwell-series-or-later cards - please make sure your drivers are up to date. Support has also been added for Logitech ARX[gaming.logitech.com]. For more information on each of these, please click their respective link.

Today you’re also able to play a whole new scenario called “Cavalry and Cannonades,” and settle on two new map types, “Four-Leaf Clover” and “Six-Armed Snowflake.” These maps are playable both online and off, and were designed to encourage more conflict by forcing players to move toward the center. For the full list of what’s in this latest update, please see below.

Firaxis Games and 2K are committed to making Civilization VI the best experience possible and will continue to support the title. If you have any feedback on this update or just the game in general, please let us know in the 2K Forums[forums.2k.com] or here on Steam. Stay civilized!

- Larger starting army and additional starting techs.
- Time limit: 50 turns.
- Goal: Possess the largest territory.
•   DX12 Support
•   Complete Logitech ARX Support

[GAMEPLAY UPDATES]

•   Reduced border incursion warnings if the troops are within their own borders.
•   Increased the number of Great Works of Writing slots in the Amphitheater to 2.
•   Increased Counterspy operation time.

•   Fixed some production Social Policies, Great People, and Pantheon bonuses that were not applying correctly.

•   Fixed some issues with how the Great Wall was built by players and AI, including proper connection to mountains and removing other players’ Great Walls as potential connection points.
•   Fixed a unit cycling error with formations.

•   Fixed several issues when Airstrips and Aerodromes are occupied, including forced rebasing of enemy units and UI updates.
•   Fixed an exploit that allowed ranged and bombard units to gain experience when attacking a district with 0 hit points.
•   Fixed an issue with wonders when transferring city ownership – conquering a city with a wonder would not track that wonder, and could lead to problems when attempting to use Gustave Eiffel.
•   Fixed an issue where the Settler lens would not always show the right information to the player.
•   Fixed an issue where AI would counter gold changes with the change desired, rather than the total amount of gold desired.
•   Fixed an issue where the Tutorial intro and outro videos would appear off-center in certain resolutions.
•   Fixed some crashes with units.
•   Fixed an issue where multiple leaders of the same civilization would frequently show up in a game.

•   Players will no longer receive any warmongering penalties from a joint war partner for actions in that joint war.
•   Liberating a civilization back to life will now bring them back into the game properly.
•   Observation Balloon range bonus was being incorrectly applied when stacked.
•   Text and grammar fixes.

[VISUALS]

•   Fixed an issue where the Advisor voice was not playing in some languages.

If you’ve been living off the grid and wiping your bum with nettles in the hope that Civilization will one day have a ‘try before you buy’ policy, today is your lucky day. The latest in the venerable strategy series, Civilization VI [official site], now has a demo.

Players who download the Sid Meier’s Civilization VI demo will be able to play as China, led by Qin Shi Huang and take their first steps building a new civilization for up to 60 turns in to the game. For those completely new to the Civilization series the demo also includes the tutorial from the full game to introduce and guide beginners to the world of Civilization.

The AI is not "weak". It is virtually absent. The game is best considered a sandbox with no meaningful opponents. Only at the highest difficulty levels is there a challenge, at the beginning of the game, and the opposition is largely just in numbers, not in any "intelligent" actions.
Title: Re: Civilization VI!!?!
Post by: bbmike on March 17, 2017, 02:41:06 PM
I'm not a warmonger. The AI is really good at stopping me from winning. I think it depends on how you play. I constantly lose at Prince level. If you like to role play the game and aren't the type of player who tries to take out every other AI I think you will be okay with it.

Pretty well my experience with it.  I mean, it was fun, but I shelved Civ 6 for a about a year.  I figure it'll get better with mods and age much like Civ 5 did, it just needs to grow into it.

As it stands, playing Civ 6 against the AI is a lot like playing with yourself, and as a 40 year old man with  more than 10 years of marriage under my belt, I do that enough as is.

It's a shame that a company with the resources of Firaxis can't devote some time to A.I.--- it was real bad in Civ5. sure those hexes and limit stacks looked great on paper-but since the A.I. was completely incapable of combining arms you either had to let the A.I. cheat it's way to a science, cultural or whatnot victory or admit the A.I. could never win a conquest game. Say what you will about stacks of doom- at least they challenged you in Civ4. Since their departure no civ game has been able to---from Beyond Earth to Civ6. I simply stopped buying them after the horrendously boring and lifeless beyond Earth.

There's nothing really wrong with the designs of their games--but the best designed game that has brain dead A.I. is simply not fun-- whereas a game with design flaws but a good A.I. can be enjoyed.

No chess game would sell if it can't beat you. Heck players demand not only that but one that adapts to play style and can teach the player to improve. For some crazy reason however no one expects this in any other game outside of chess -- but i can assure you if they started to game A.I. would see a marked improvement.

Switched to unique unit flag backing for religious units
Display religion (if applicable) for a unit to be purchased with Faith
Added the ‘Condemn Heretic’ unit action to allow military units to eliminate religious units in their tile, similar to pillaging a trade route

Adding religious pressure to both ends of a trade route:
Destination city gets 1 pressure per turn of the origin city's majority religion (if it has one). This is the same amount as if that city was close by.

Expanding on the “one unit per tile” design, support units can now be embedded with other units, like anti-tank support with infantry, or a warrior with settlers. Similar units can also be combined to form powerful “Corps” units.
Why is this new? I know Civilization is a much lighter/more casual/sandboxy game than most, but I don't understand why basic and obvious features like this took literally thirty years to be implemented. Why in God's name would a STRATEGIC LEVEL GAME have a Legion with no support take up an entire space the size of a God damn city? Civ5 just made it worse, because there's no stacking. Why in God's name would a STRATEGIC LEVEL GAME even allow you to deploy artillery without it being attached to a cavalry or infantry division? This makes no sense whatsoever. In fact, why isn't artillery INCLUDED in infantry from the moment you get the technology? Nobody has artillery running around loose with no army, and no regular troops from the late medieval period onward would arrive on the battlefield - much less at a siege - without artillery. In fact, simply having lower strength could easily represent lacking artillery given the high level of abstraction involved. Or how about 'machine gunners' being their own army, lol, WTF is that supposed to be? It's a grand strategy game that has more graininess than a tactical game, why?

That's the main thing that annoys me about Civ, it's a fun game but warfare is so tedious, slow and nonsensical. That and oil-powered battlecruisers that take several years to cross an ocean.
I know it's for #muhBalance #muhGameplay, but if your engine requires patent gibberish to be 'balanced' you should probably rework the entire combat modeling involved.

Also, units should upgrade and get bonuses from tech, instead of being replaced.

Civ has always played much like a board game. If you keep that in mind I don't find the system odd at all.

I don't recall Risk having artillery running around detached from units. I mean, according to Civ a Legion is literally just the guys with the shields and swords - no artillery, no cavalry, no light infantry, no archers. That's just a weird. I think building 'armies' would make more sense than having tiny fractional support units treated as entire armies themselves.
EU4 is bad enough with its twenty-two thousand man artillery battalions.
Don't get me wrong, I like all of the Civ games (except maybe 4) but they're extremely bizarre. The AI has no purpose but to frustrate the player, it's totally irrational and ahistorical.

You and me both. I am still running the PC (except for a new CPU replaced in 2013, and GPU-2012) that I got in 2008, of all things.

It is for this reason I gave up on the franchise a long time ago.  OTOH any civ game is great when you play with all human opponents.

It is frustrating that the AI is totally irrational and I really wish they would put proper diplomacy in Civilization one day. But ahistorical? It's supposed to be ahistorical.

So Civ 6 is on sale for under $18. Is it worth it? I played a bit of V and thought it was ok, albeit what I thought a clickfest.

Then I say ‘No, probably not your game’.

I guess that wasn't a fair critique since clicking all game long is sop. I remembered not liking the constant shuffling of builders around. It seemed like 80% of the game. But I remembered why I quit playing; the game froze on me mid game and no matter which save I used whenever I got to or around that point again it would freeze. I just didn't have the patience at the time to try again and shelved it.

Vanilla Civ VI is just OK. You really need all the expansions to make it a better game.

Even with the last expansion, Gathering Storm, there are a few quirks.

But I enjoy playing the game, a lot... 1200+ hrs according to Steam....  :uglystupid2:

Well you do have to stay busy at work.  :-"

I wish I could see the mods for games I don't own yet. Often times, when making a choice to purchase a game, Id like to know if mods are permitted and which ones.

Does the game support mods? Anything that might make the graphics...er...more subtle? Good balancing mods?

^I am with you on that. Although Bart and others have said they got used to the Civ VI graphics after a while.

They actually toned down the colour scheme with the last expansion. The graphics are still a little cartoony but not that bad after you play fer awhile.

And there are LOTS of mods. Some tweak the game, some change it completely.
My favourite is Yet (not) Another Maps Pack. It adds a truly giant map of the Earth with true start location.
There are AI mods, and more units mods, and maps galore, and etc....

In fact, on Steam you can go in to the Workshop for any game and look at all the mods available.

Is there a way to do so for games not in your Library?

You should be able to. Try going the games store page in Steam and there should be a link to the workshop from there. If not go directly to the workshop and search for the game.
Not at my PC right now to check.

Ehm...do you guys have some good advice? I have about 70 hours of gameplay with CIV VI so far but have still trouble to avoid too many dark ages (is there a list with all the things one can do to get points) and i have also trouble having a good overall score (the AI empires are always ahead). I don't feel like i am doing some bad mistakes but there's something i am missing. Thanks.

I don't know of any listing of the era points but here are some:

1 pt for every other Civ you meet, but not City state.
3 pts for every natural wonder you find first, 1 pt if yer not first to find it.
1-2 pts for first boat.
5 pts for first around the planet, 2-3 points if not first.
4 pts if first to meet every other Civ in game.
3-4 pts for building yer first unique unit.
3-4 pts for building yer first unique building.
2 pts if yer the first one to become the suzerain of a City state.
1 pt for each goodie hut you open.
3 pts for founding a religion
3-4 points for changing to a new government.
2-3 pts for winning a battle against a stronger unit.
2-3 pts for winning a battle with a Great General near by.
1-3 pts for earning or buying a great person.

Don't worry too much about your score vs the AI. Just by the Renaissance period you should have a plan for what type of victory condition you are going for and work hard toward that. Score only matters if time runs out.

Just found this too:
