Challenger? IIRC the chevron is some kind of Anglophone military Company designation, A, B, C, D depending on orientation. Perhaps one of the folks on this board who has actually served in an armored unit can enlighten us further.

Gus, the shadows from the stadium go left to right. the shadows on the tailplanes go right to left.
The shadows on the pilot's O2 hose follow the same line as the stadium. Maybe only the following jets were shopped in or the A/c were never all in the same original source pic to begin with.

Blue Angels love flying low. I'm sure that I've told the tale about when the Blue Angels did an airshow here and the ground crew was seen pulling branches off the landing gear of a BA F-18 after a practice run.
Brant was once licensed for a T72 without ever having actually driven it.
But no, you don't jump & fire at the same time. In fact, you don't jump if you can help it - it's hell on the torsion bars and feels like shit inside.
I read the book Tank Men and it recalled a demo of one of the first production tanks (Britain) in front of King George. Part of the demo showed the tank climbing a small hill and trench behind the hill. The tank crawled up the hill with a large part sticking up past the ground until it's center of gravity went over and the front of the tank swung down and hit with some force. The King came over to enthusiasticvly congradulate the first 3 tank crew (out of 12) that emerged from the tank, not knowing that the remainder were unconcious or otherwise injured in the tank and unable to get out.
great read that book. Gave me a new understanding of what tankers went through psycologically during battle

Don't make me swim to your house and force you to watch The Undiscovered Country and First Contact...
First Contact was okay except for the total retconning of Zephram Cochrane. Final Frontier was by far the suckiest Trek movie. I almost walked out after the campfire scene and I almost vomitted after the Uhura dance on the sand dune. It took me a long time to forgive Shat that piece of sh!t. However, it did amuse me when Kirk argued with God. The two biggest egos in the universe (other than Star) having it out- classic!

Title: Re: Pictures of Greatness!
Post by: Martok on April 30, 2013, 02:47:56 AM
I actually think First Contact and Voyage Home (IV) are the best ones. Undiscovered Country and WOK would be 4 and 3, respectively.
First Contact will always be my favorite, with The Voyage Home (VI) and Wrath of Khan (II) rounding out my top three. Those three films are the ones I consider to be truly good.
I found The Search for Spock (III) and The Voyage Home (IV) to both be fairly decent; they're #4 & 5 on my list, respectively. (Heck, the former is worth watching just for the scene(s) where Kirk & crew conspire to steal the Enterprise; the scene where Sarek mind-melds with Kirk is pretty moving as well.)
Final Frontier was by far the suckiest Trek movie.
Then clearly you have not seen either the first or last movie (The Motion Picture and Nemesis).
At least The Final Frontier has some elements of "so bad it's good", making it a guilty pleasure to watch. In contrast, TMP and Nemesis are simply terrible, and have no redeeming value whatsoever.
Sure did! It was full of great scenes like Checkov looking for the 'Nuclear Wessels' and Scotty trying to talk to the 1980's era computer using the mouse for a microphone. Or the scene where they scare off the whalers by decloaking right over their boat or classic lines like "Are you from space?" No, I'm from Iowa. I work in space." And many more...
Good stuff :)

I've seen them all. Nemesis was terrible, but it didn't have Spock singing 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat' and it didn't have a fat Kirk free climbing El Capitan. :o
TMP needed to be heavily edited and run about an hour shorter, but it did have elements of serious sci-fi to it. I liked Kirk's obsession with getting the Enterprise back and his rivalry with Decker (which tied in nicely to the original series episode "Doomsday Machine" with Commodore Decker).

Sheesh. That brings back memories.
Back in college we had a distinctly un-politically correct Cinco de Mayo party. The fraternity bought a non-functioning bug for $300, which the junkyard guy assured us, he'd gladly buy back the next day. We were quite explicit that our intention was to beat on it in an increasingly drunken fury with everything we could get.
He was happy.
Well, we spray painted it in fiesta-ish colors, took baseball bats to it, and jumped up and down on every part of it, including rolling it over.
When he arrived the next day to tow it off he couldn't come to grips with how badly it had been handled. However, true to his word, he bought it back.
It was awesome.

He's wearing a Desert Rats patch. In WW2 the Gurkhas had a reputation for sneaking into enemy camps at night and silently slitting the throats of several sleeping soldiers, leaving the others alive to have their dead comrades be the first thing they see after waking. A very effective terror tactic...

Hey, I've been meaning to ask for a while now but where do each of you Canadians live at the present time? IIRC 40Cent lives near Halifax and Migsie somewhere near there as well but I don't really know about the rest of you. If you mentioned it I must have missed it. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that SDR lives on the West coast, maybe around Vancouver?

Motto of the crack users.
I'm in Lethbridge which is quite nice. There is good mosquito control so you can go out anytime unmolested. The rest of Alberta seems to be full of tiger mosquitoes which are immune to DEET. They ignore it. The city is big enough to have all the amenities while small enough to get anywhere in 15 minutes. Property prices are still low for a city of 100k.

well lets take it as a given that hollywood has no imagination at this point. given that fact what are the main storylines that could be used? youve got the conclusion of the Rebellion, Thrawn, the Bactra Wars and what else?

It's both strange and ironic that your cynicism gives me a spark of hope.
That being said, though, I still can't find it in me to be as optimistic as you. I'd still bet they find *something* approximating an "original" screenplay, and that it runs counter to (and/or ignores entirely) the continuity created by the books. Odds are the Thrawn trilogy gets tossed aside like so much, well, refuse.
(Sorry, I find myself in a bit of a black mood today...)

I'd squeal like Gusington if they went with the Thrawn storyline. But here's the thing - if they do, there's no guarantee they won't fudge it up like a Willy Wonka proctology exam. As Star said, Hollywood has pretty much gone tits up when it comes to creating original stories, and there's a really good reason for that. Hollywood has long left the patterns of the 90s where pitch meetings sold movies - now they're more about marketing movies to an international audience than 'Murica. Nothing wrong with that, but you can see where it affects stories (such as when the Red Dawn remake was changed from China to North Korea, because God forbid the Chinese market gets put off by that - sorry, that still pisses me off and makes me see red). I can recommend some good books on the subject of Hollywood's current decline if you're interested. The entire dynamic fascinates me.
But, erm, yeah, Star Wars VII. With all that said, they're going to be less interested in originality and more in what will squeeze dollars out of China, India, and other large markets. Personally I have no hope that this will be a good movie, not after Lucas's terrible I, II, and III, which NEVER GOT BETTER but still made HUGE bank. Sigh.

Design elements humble and spare make a powerful impression at St. Henry’s Ecumenical Art Chapel in Turku, Finland. Conceived by the Helsinki firm Sanaksenaho Architects, the structure consists of a single slender volume with curved walls that converge dramatically overhead in a steep pitch. (Its shape was inspired by the Christian fish symbol.) Pine planks form virtually every surface of the arklike interior, whose ribbed sides accentuate the sense of perspective that draws one’s gaze toward the front of the church. There, vertical expanses of glass bathe the unadorned altar in sunlight, providing a luminous focal point for worship.

Yeah. It wastes a lot of material while presenting a huge wind sail. A catenary is the optimum figure for a self supporting roof.

The point of the arch is a reminder of Gothic imagery. God would actually prefer the catenary. The tech was not known back in Gothic times. It is stronger, uses less material, most importantly will cost less to heat, will resist wind better, will keep the airy, to the heavens, feel.

Cialis is a wonderful drug, eh, Star? ;)
What's so great about Cialis if it makes you want to take a bath outside in separate bathtubs? And what about all the back injuries resulting from over exertion? Not everyone is in shape enough to drag their claw-foot bathtub outside at a moment's notice...

I guess you've not been exposed to the glory that is stupid American pharmaceutical company commercials.
We have tons of the damn things here on TV, advertising how great they are at solving issue A, but the side effects they tell you are B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, and sometimes P, all the while playing comforting music and showing happy people at play. It's pretty disgusting, actually.

I dunno, man. I'm not much of a follower in many things. And I am legendarily bad about not having seen shows, movies, etc. that are considered seminal and must watch. As an example, here is a quick list of programs I have never seen:
Jurassic Park Forrest Gump The Wire Lost Modern Family Almost any John Wayne movie Caddyshack Pretty much none of the 'classic' war movies
And that's just to name a few. And we'll not get started on the movies I have seen that I thought were just plain terrible (I'm looking at you Blade Runner).

Now is as good a time as any to get this out there, but, I've held back on Caddyshack for most of this time because I don't think Bill Murray is funny. In fact, I think most of the characters he plays are kind of douchey.
Is it your turn to troll now?
Not looking for a certain response. Would actually prefer to avoid a huge deal about it. I know it's not a popular stance around here. And it's not just Murray, I dislike pretty much all of the early SNL cast. The only ones I like are Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd.

He hasn't aged too well either, apparently. :2funny:
Actually I heard rumors about there being a new Star Trek series in pre-production called "Captain Worf" or something, but I think that idea died on the vine unfortunately.

His performance in the new series 'Crossbones' hasn't been too bad. The series itself is a bit of a stretch, though supposedly based on a true account of a pirates' republic that existed, briefly, in the 1700s.

As for reading and Hemingway, I never saw what the fuss was. I read , 'The Sun Also Rises,' and was underwhelmed. The coolest thing about Hemingway, as far as I am concerned, is the quote attributed to him about doing sober what your said you'd do drunk.

We had a deal with our vet for our previous dog. The dog had grown to be afraid of the vet towards the end of her life. The deal with the vet was to have her put down at home - as long as we could schedule for a slow time for the vet. Dog had a stroke, would walk in a circle hitting its head against the wall. Nothing could make the dog's tail wag - and Snort wagged more and harder than every dog I've had before or since. It was just time. Snort died at home.

We have a wonderful Bagel (part Beagle, part Bassett) that we got from a rescue org a few years ago. He was about 4 at that time. He's about 8 now and still doing well but dammit, it's going to kill me when it comes time to take care of him.
I had to do that once with a cocker spaniel my wife had since a puppy. He was doing the same thing you describe, airboy. That was more than 10 years ago and I still feel like crap because I just could not be there when they did it. That's why I bawled when I saw that comic because it really cuts deep and I still feel tremendously guilty for not being strong enough.

Quote
In the case of Amber Vinson, the Dallas nurse who flew commercially as she was becoming ill with Ebola, one health official said "somebody dropped the ball."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that Vinson called the agency several times before flying, saying that she had a fever with a temperature of 99.5 degrees. But because her fever wasn't 100.4 degrees or higher, she didn't officially fall into the group of "high risk" and was allowed to fly.

if this was hollywood, that would be on a plaque at the base of a tall cleopatras needle style monument, and the camera would pan back over an empty manhattan skyline, grass growing on skyscrpaers and not a human in sight

Oh man, I can't believe I never uploaded these!
Ok, about 6 months ago I'm upstairs reading and all of a sudden I hear this scream...like the worst, scariest scream you ever heard.
About a half hour later I go downstairs to see what the fuss is all about. There was a beach towel that was bunched up in a laundry basket in our laundry room for about a week or so. My wife goes to do a load of towels and throws the beach towel in with them. She's transferring them from the washer to the drier when that thing falls out. She promptly screams her head off in surprise and fear.
Fortunately it didn't bite her when she grabbed the beach towel out of the basket, and then it died in the washer or else...ewwwwww!
I have seen a couple of super scary centipedes out here. They are no joke.
I think we should all get some and mail them to Martok and give him a new phobia. :D
You're welcome to try, but I don't think it'll take. :P Not that I'm fond of centipedes more than I am of any other "creepy-crawly" types, but they don't trigger a primal fear, "fight or flight" reaction in me like spiders do.

In my defense re Starbuck -- that was like 5 years ago at least since I watched the series, and her being a captain was never as much of a plot point than some other things. I think you're all missing the point. The character and quality of the writing, dialogue, and acting are what made it great, not the sci-fi setting mixed with Western themes. That's merely a backdrop.
It's lie watching B5 and saying you didn't care for it because you don't like CGI space stations.

Not necessarily, as a show with a modicum of intelligence and infused with rural common-sense and southern social grace', it has to go head to head against the virtuoso icons of American culture like Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor

I also never watched Firefly much, probably was busy watching other stuff at the time. I did watch Serenity with a friend (without having watched much of the tv series), and I didn't get it much - although I loved most of the cast (I do follow Nathan Filion regularly on Castle, and nice to see Baccarin continued a good career track afterwards). That being said, I'll probably download it or check it out on tv reruns when I get some time.

To be fair, depending on how much I didn't like CGI space stations, I wouldn't have gotten much out of B5 or DS9. (For example, I can't stand medical dramas, and so never got much out of House, even though I can recognize and respect its quality.)

Thank you, Mart. For gallows humor though, wish I could channel an engineer, Larry Tuohey. He had the driest sense of humor. One time he was going down a path and thinking the area was clear, told a joke about twenty Greeks crossing a stream, but only one got his equipment wet. At that moment, a mortar round passed overhead and exploded twenty yards away. Everyone else ducked. Larry just clucked his tongue, "Critics. Always the critics."

Quote
Another expert, Gareth Williams, associate director of the IAU's Minor Planet Center, said that Pluto is not a planet, citing the official definition, which states that a planet is a celestial body that:
• Is in orbit around the sun.
• Is round or nearly round.
• Has "cleared the neighborhood" around its orbit, meaning it is not surrounded by objects of similar size and characteristics.
Williams said Pluto failed on that third qualification, since it had several other "dwarf planets" near it and also overlaps Neptune's orbit at times.

Williams sounds like a hate filled ass to me and he has now caused me to reconsider whether or not Neptune is a planet since it's always allowing pesky space objects like Pluto, Haley's Comet, and countless other objects to cross it's orbital space with impunity.
Title: Re: Pictures of Greatness!
Post by: JasonPratt on July 14, 2015, 08:36:15 AM
Crossing Neptune's plane shouldn't have anything to do with it. Especially since Pluto (and Charon) orbit at a quite oblique angle anyway, clearly independent from Neptune's influence.
However, those other things aren't similar in size and characteristics to Neptune; so they don't get to count against Neptune being a planet.
On the other hand, the fact that after all this time Neptune hasn't cleared out Pluto argues in favor of Pluto being a planet!
Besides, "dwarf planets" are still planets, yo.

Even more : there are five objects listed as dwarf planets in our solar system. They are: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. And more will probably be added as we discover them.

Quick poking around shows that this pattern is not public and creator has no plans to make it so.... too busy making money off of finished products.. There is another face hugger knit pattern out there but it's pretty lame when compared to this one.

What the hell? Zimbabwe will never be on that map.
People, including (unfortunately) many Americans, cannot even find their own country on a map, let alone Brazil or the UK. For them finding a country like Zimbabwe, which they probably never knew existed (and might still not) is a lost cause.

The description said this was recovered from the battlefield of Gallipoli.
IIRC there is another instance of that during the ACW. Fredericksburg maybe?
It is from this that I came up with a concept with the wholly clumsy name of Large Wars Improbability Theory.
Basically if a conflict is large enough, eventually something highly improbably is going to happen. Like two bullets meeting in midair. Or a bailed out fighter pilot killing the Japanese pilot who shot him down with his pistol.

Formal award names (such as "Oscar," "Grammy," and "Nobel Prize in Literature") are capitalized because they are proper nouns—the name of something specific.
Doris Lessing won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2007. Doris Lessing won a literature prize.

How is Fuck Off a formal award. Its but a gentle hint and also a verb, noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, or interjection with the ability to be all of the above in a same sentence. http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Fuck_fucking_fucked_fucker_fucking_fuckups_fuck_fucking_fucked_fucking_fuckup_fucking_fucker's_fuck http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2009/09/24/a-scholarly-explication-of-fuck
But nowhere on that bastion of truth and rational thought we call the internet is there a listing for a real Fuck Off award
Take spiked mike wraps it together with duck tape solders connections together, re calibrates it, lovingly replaces dented diaphragm, learns electrical engineering degree in order to follow circuit diagram, repairs mike does sound check, then goes Boom AND SPIKES mike again (also ironically ignores all proper punctuation and capitalization rules 8))

It isn't a formal award. It's a proper noun, the name of a specific award.
To continue to use the example you cited above, you capitalize the names of specific awards, as opposed to general.
So Staggerwing presented me his Fuck You ( <- N.B. Capitalized) award.
Or we could simply say he presented me an award for obnoxiousness.
It isn't the formality, or reality, of the award. It's the fact that his imaginary award has a name, Fuck Off, and as such is capitalized.
Do you still need this mic?
Err... ummm... the award was from UCG....

"Patron Saint of All News" more like. ::)
I remember watching some film of Goebbels at a Nazi rally a year or two ago -- pretty sure it's archived in "The World At War" somewhere -- and I vividly remember two things.
First, he addressed the audience rather like he was schlager fighting. Not at all sure where he got that, or if it was coincidental, but as a fencer it caught my eye. (Schlager, no umlauts on this keyboard so imagine there's one on the 'a', is a type of German sabre fencing where opponents each stand in a narrow circle within reach of each other's blades, and with various amounts of not-much-protection. Footwork is strictly prohibited, and body dodging is frowned on as cowardly. Defense is purely dependent on bladework; no stabs allowed, but the goal is to be the first to get a light cut on the other guy. I used the principles slightly modified with more protection of course, as a sabre training tool when teaching.) Not a lot of 'swordarm' work, but a lot of 'sword hand' work, and his posture though a bit sloppily dangerous (too much chest turned toward his 'target') was pretty decent. I've never seen anyone else make a speech like that, and I've made a mental note NOT TO EVER TRY DOING THAT if I ever get into the habit of public speaking just in case someone makes a spurious comparison. ::) :buck2:
Second, he was literally, and I mean literally, telling the audience exactly why propaganda was evil (so that they should beware of it), and also that the Nazis were certain to defeat their foes because they made a skill out of being the best propagandists -- to which the crowd was cheering lustily along. You go, super-evil propaganda guy, woo-hoo!!
I thought, am I watching the ultimate audience trolling here??

Yeah, a less permanent method of fencing was in use by some German fraternities back when I was going to school there. I didn't join one, but I had a buddy who did.
It's my understanding that the more modern version (at least to his eyes) didn't hold so much technique as it was a simple slugfest, with the loser the one whose arm gave out first.
Also my understanding that these "Duels" are where the stereotypical one-eyed Prussian officer came from, since the result thereof was not just a woman-swooning facial scar...or perhaps the more fortuitous monocle....

LB, reading around a bit after remembering that, I got the impression Goebbels wasn't using schlager form (directly) so much as various choices he made to hold himself upright after a childhood of debilitating illnesses. Some of that could have still been based on having watched schlag duels, but after seeing other photos of his speaking style I'm now leaning toward that film being more of an accidental resemblance.
Conclusion: I can still use schlager form for public speaking one day. O0

Could be worse. The sponsor/veteran/coach of our fencing team in college liked to show off this terrifying scar he got on his leg from a sabre. Then after everyone was suitably impressed, he'd explain how he got it: screwing around with a broken weapon while drunk one night in college, he and a buddy decided to slash it across the pavement of the road while sitting on the curb in order to see it shoot sparks. One of the slashes missed. :D
Moral of the story: alcohol and/or screwing around doesn't mix with sharp weapons. Also, the weapons may be dull but they break sharp.
The three fencing injuries I know about personally come from sabres, probably because they tend to lack colored tape on the end to signal when that end has gone suddenly missing! >:D (Plus being drunk for the Grand Old Fencer.) Also they're the thinnest of the three Olympic weapons, and the only one of the three where cuts are both legal and encouraged, so they shatter the easiest and get into the most snapping situations. (The other two weapons can snap from stabbing too hard, but that's true of sabres, too: thrusts count for points.)
Mine was one of those: the thick fighting glove on my weapon hand had gotten a little small over time, as had my jacket sleeve from washing it, and the sleeve had come out of my glove during an exchange without me noticing it. My opponent was trying a stab for my chest below my main arm, having psyched me into raising my arm a little too high to parry it properly (and well done on that strategy, btw), so I did the only thing I could and pushed down with my arm to force a secondary cut along my forearm. (In sabre rules, when a thrust turns into a cut, the cut counts as a second attack even if it lands first so the defender has a brief chance to score a point by counter-attack even if it lands second. There are training-to-hit-without-being-hit rationales for this. Arms are considered on-target for sabre.)
Consequently, he shot that sabre blade right into the gap of my jacket, and even though the blade wasn't snapped there are still edges to it, so it can be like getting a paper cut with metal. Zippp! -- about a 3 inch cut on my forearm. Not deep enough for stiches, but it left scar tissue for years.
The other scar I know about could have easily killed someone: a sabre had snapped during someone's parry, and no one noticed until the defender parried another thrust a few seconds later down onto his leading (in this case his right) leg, out thrust from a previous lunge. A good idea normally, since legs are off-target in sabre and also (unlike in foil) a hit off target doesn't stop the action. (Or it didn't back then; sabre rules tend to be changed more often than for other weapons.) This time, not such a good idea: the sharp tip went straight through the kevlar weave knickers he was wearing, zip zip, in and out, halfway through his leg. Only needed one stitch, but barely missed the artery.
This is why I used to tell students that while the jackets and plastrons (underlying half-jackets, required legally once someone died from a foil strike that someone calculated might have been prevented with more padding there) and knickers are all one hundred percent necessary, and might possibly save their lives, don't rely on them. If a blade breaks sharp, it's going in and out through that stuff regardless; only the mask will really save you (which is why the only ironclad rule for sparring is never without a mask). Then I would punch a broken epée entirely through a box I brought for that purpose. And watched their faces when they jumped.

Ross enlisted in the United States Air Force at 18 years old and served as a medical records technician. He eventually rose to the rank of master sergeant and served as the first sergeant of the U.S. Air Force Clinic at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, where he first saw the snow and mountains that later became recurring themes in his artwork. He developed his quick-painting technique to create art for sale during brief daily work breaks. Having held military positions that required him to be, in his own words, "mean" and "tough", "the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work", Ross decided that if he ever left the military, he would never scream again.

Theoretically, if a person were really stoned or tripping and listening to a great story being told the person might experience a kind of 'frisson' (a pleasant tingling running down or up the back of one's scalp, like the hairs were raising up, but not scary at all) at certain points of the story.
Now take away the stoned/tripping part...

Basically it's a very pleasant tingling that starts at the top of your head and spreads out from there, not a sexual thing, just relaxing and hypnotic I suppose - for some it's noise and for some it's action that triggers it - like I said hard to explain - I get it watching artists, even watching junior do her colouring in

Has anyone visited the site? I wonder if you can get close enough to ground zero to see where the sand was turned to glass.
I've not visited, but I did a lot of research on the site when I was considering it as a setting for my novel(s). There is a plaque/monument at ground zero, so yeah, I believe you can walk right up there. I want to say it's not open all the time, though, and since it's in the middle of nowhere you'd best check ahead of time just to be sure before heading all the way out there.

Has anyone visited the site? I wonder if you can get close enough to ground zero to see where the sand was turned to glass.
I visited a few years ago when I was stationed a few hours away at Ft. Bliss. It's on a restricted part of White Sands Missile Range if my memory serves (the entire desert valley from El Paso to Albequerque is one big stretch of military reservation) and they only open it to the public two days out of the year. You can walk right into the 'crater,' just a shallow depressed bowl about a hundred yards across, and drag your feet through the green trinitite glass that's there. The legs of the tower that elevated the bomb above the ground for the test are still sticking out of the sand in the middle of the crater, since the tower itself was vaporized. You can also go see the ranch house a few miles away where they assembled the bomb. It's just a dusty Adobe structure, no running water or electricity. Amazing to see how primitive the conditions were under which they were working.
There's a framed letter on the wall of the house from Albert Einstein to Franklin Roosevelt from the '30s. Einstein used it to warn the president about the possibility of creating such a weapon, and speculated that a ship could carry the bomb into a harbor and explode it. What struck me was that at that time Einstein could imagine the technology for an atomic bomb, but not for an aircraft large enough to carry it!
Something else I hadn't realized until I visited there was that the scientists there only bothered to test the implosion design bomb. They already new the simpler gun design would work without testing it, and had already shipped the components for both bombs to the pacific when the Trinity test occurred.

These guys should have their own thread. In Field Marshal Slim's book on Burma, he told the story of the Japanese attacks on Imphal-Kohima. At one point, it was necessary to reinforce a drive in the jungle. There was no landing field so the troops would have to dropped in. The only troops available was a battalion of gurkhas. The situation was explained to the troops. This unit had never done a jump before and the men discussed this surprise order. An old subadar came to Slim and asked, "At what height will we get out of the planes." "Two hundred feet." "The men would prefer jumping out at one hundred." "But that wouldn't allow time for the parachutes to open." "Oh. We get parachutes then?"

Noticed much the same when I moved furniture in my student days. Working class guys were usually right there to grab an end. The monied types would, at best, ignore you. Oh yeah, he was pissed. I could have sworn he didn't find out until premiere night but I'll be damned if I can't find a reference to it. Regardless it was kind of a dick move on Lucas' part. I think they've washed their hands of him, but fans have been calling for him to get some kind of nod in the newer Star Wars movies...though Prowse is now into his 80s and in a wheelchair, so I don't know how they'd do that.
They originally chose him because he was a 6'6" bodybuilder, but his accent was indeed a major issue.

The trick to Space Invaders is to focus your eyes on the shooter and use your peripheral vision to target the descending space ships. I played it on my old Intellivision until I finally scored one million points and then quit. Of course it took me 5 years for my sight to return to normal but... it was worth it. :bd:

.... :DD I much prefer the “spray “ to hit the target in nice neat lines if ya don’t mind ;D A certain hit and less mess !!!!

Yeah watched it last night. They made lots of jokes about the rules being convoluted but I don't think they used actual rules references. For example they did a weather roll which took 2 rolls on 2 different charts. And they never brought up the Italian pasta water rule.... Nice to see a wargame get some air time though.

I *loved* Calvin and Hobbes. There is a lot of wisdom in those strips.
I used to tease my daughters that I still had the receipt for when I bought them at Target, and if they didn't behave, I would return them and get my money back. I didn't start doing this until they were old enough to understand that I was joking. I used to also tease them that instead of going to the dentist, I could take care of their teeth with my Black and Decker drill, and we could split the money I saved from not going to the expensive dentist.

I was at that Farewell Party for George. It was a great party. Everybody signed their names on the Men's Room wall just like on the Declaration of Independence. <:-) Ben Franklin got us out of paying the tab by telling everyone to come outside and watch his kite in a thunderstorm.... and then we just ran like hell, which is hard to do in tight buckle-top shoes. George himself had the best line of the night, drunk on his ass he told everybody, "I cannot tell a lie. You're all ugly". :2funny:

Remember that iconic Spider-Man scene when Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker is coming to grips with his new powers and he catches love interest Mary-Jane Watson mid-fall in the middle of the cafeteria?
Using his webslinger, he also manages to catch her tray along with the sandwich, apple, carton of juice, and dessert that were precariously balanced on top.
It was impressive in 2002 and it’s still impressive now but we’ve just discovered that star of the film Tobey actually managed that slight of hand all by himself and with no CGI trickery – and in only 156 takes.

It was few years ago now. We did a WoW Guildmeet for his 30th Birthday at an activity centre in the North Yorkshire moors. As a surprise, we had hired this guy who is a member of the War of the Roses reenactment society and does a demo of fighting with a long sword. That armour is an accurate copy of the real thing and was bloody heavy, as is the sword. All that gear is worth several £k.
Was a great weekend - there was about 15 off with folk travelling from different parts of the the UK and a couple came over from Holland.
This is us and some messing about with practice swords in a heavy downpour!

Ever get that feeling that you're being watched???
The 'eyes' are a not very uncommon cloud phenomena called 'fallstreak holes'..
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallstreak_hole
A fallstreak hole is a large gap, usually circular or elliptical, that can appear in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds.
Such holes are formed when the water temperature in the clouds is below freezing but the water, in a supercooled state, has not frozen yet due to the lack of ice nucleation. When ice crystals do form, a domino effect is set off due to the Bergeron process, causing the water droplets around the crystals to evaporate: this leaves a large, often circular, hole in the cloud.
It is thought that the introduction of large numbers of tiny ice crystals into the cloud layer sets off this domino effect of fusion which creates the hole. The ice crystals can be formed by passing aircraft, which often have a large reduction in pressure behind the wing- or propeller-tips.
As they are mostly formed by aircraft we know them as 'pilot holes'.

I don't know about the year 1972 as I was too young but when I started working my very first job (around 1982?) I made 60 a week. You could buy a full meal at McDonald's for about 3.5 IIRC.

In 1972 minimum wage was $1.60/hr. That's when I had my first job as a fry cook at BBF (Borden Burger, not sure what the F stood for). Fries were much better then because they used lard not some pansy vegetable oil.
