Radio bloviators are still perpetuating the myth that Tom O'Brien told Russell Wilson to take a hike in favor of Mike Glennon.
First, that's not what happened.
Second, here are a bunch of college seasons. Without going for Wikipedia or something similar, can you tell which seasons were Glennon and which were Wilson?

My favorite Tom Brady stat I heard today

Tom Brady's career percentage of seasons making it to the Super Bowl:  44%
Russell Westbrook's career field goal percentage on the basketball court: 43%

It's more likely that Tom Brady is in the Super Bowl at the end of the season than Russell Westbrook hits a jumper on any given night in an NBA game.

It really couldn't be any clearer than Brady when you're talking GOAT. You can hate the Patriots, you can debate the top five or even ten QB's to ever play and have plenty of material, but only Manning has come close to Brady's single-minded focus on the game. Personally I would choose Montana first in a fantasy draft but damn....how do you argue Brady's success given how long he's been at the top? The dude has five Super Bowl rings. And will it really surprise anyone if Tom adds a sixth Super Bowl ring this year?

I'm a huge Montana fan, but it's hard to argue with Brady as GOAT. The only thing I would say for Montana is that he won every time he went to the Super Bowl, but there's really no debate anymore after last year against the Falcons.

I agree completely. If I had to win one game, I would choose Montana first in a fantasy draft, but Brady is the clear GOAT. Captain America has secured his position at the top of the QB chart.

Otto Graham

Played 10 years in the NFL

Played in the title game 10 times.

(But yeah, Super Bowl era?  Tom.  All day, every day.)

Yeah, uh....back when there were eight teams maybe. Honestly, I think it's really difficult to compare teams or players from such different eras....it's hardly even the same game. But no, it won't stop us, ha!  O0

It is impossible to fairly compare QB's from different eras. For example Brady has completed almost exactly twice as many passes (5244) as Graham attempted (2626). In their time both were the best there was. Brady is certainly the best in the past 40 years.
Title: Re: 2017 Running Football Thread
Post by: bayonetbrant on August 03, 2017, 08:38:27 PM
Yeah, if you want a fair comparison for today, you have to look at post-1978, when they went to a 16-game schedule and changed the pass interference rules
Title: Re: 2017 Running Football Thread
Post by: bayonetbrant on August 03, 2017, 08:39:00 PM
The flip side is, if playing back in Otto Graham's day was so easy, how come no one else went to 10 straight title games?

Another useless stat between Brady and Graham, they have about the same TD% rate, 6.6% for Graham and 5.5% for Brady but Brady has an incredibly low 1.8% INT rate

Graham also has 1 INT for a TD and 1 fumble recovery for a TD along with a few hundred punt/kick-off return yards..

A lot of players played both sides of the ball back then. I don't know if he played every down or if he subbed when someone was winded but he apparently did everything at some point except kick and punt!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sammy_Baugh

Quote
Primarily known for his passing prowess, Baugh led the league in completion percentage seven times, passing yards four times, and an NFL record six times in passer rating, among other statistics. However, he was also known for his versatility—having the ability to play at a high level as a punter as well as a defensive back. Throughout his career, he led the league in yards per punt five times, as well as yardage in 1943, a year in which he also led the league in defensive interceptions, with 11. His yards per punt of 51.4 during the 1940 season still stands as an NFL record as of 2016.

Last year, they should've beat Clemson (f'n kicker), and FSU (d'back dropped an INT in his hands in the end zone w/ under 40 seconds left and FSU had no timeouts)

Surely your expectations were not that high.  Carolina got beat at home in a game they were predicted to win, and I shrugged it off.  No defense again.

Auburn looked pretty good in their home opener.  But on the road at Clemson next week will reveal a lot more.  I listened to about half of the game while on the road.  XM is pretty awesome for College Football.

Saw lots of Bammers in Atlanta this afternoon getting onto mass transit to go to the game.  Unfortunately, Bama looks as good as they always do.

I went to bed at halftime which turned out to be the right decision. Pats defense needs to get its act together. That was an abysmal performance last night. Brady didn't have a great game, but that debacle was mainly on the defense.

The first half of that game was terribly officiated. It in no way is an excuse for the Pats loss, but it is the main reason I didn't stay up for the second half. All it took was 30 minutes of the season opener to remind me of everything wrong with NFL officiating.

Every tried to ref a game, even in a kids league? It gives you a different perspective.

I'm not saying it's an easy job, but there were some very bad calls in the first half last night.
Title: Re: 2017 Running Football Thread
Post by: Marty Ward on September 08, 2017, 08:16:32 AM
Perhaps. I missed most of the game but most refs call what they see and that is all they can call. They can change the call if someone has a different view but a ref is assigned an area of the field to watch, they don't watch the actual play unless it happens in their area of responsibility. That is why sometimes a ref will appear to have been in perfect position to see the play but they may have been looking at a different area of the field.
It is a tough job. My father reffed for over 30 years and my sister did it for 20, she made it to division II BB.I lasted about 6 months :) I have no idea how they managed it.

I believed in a world where, eventually, this person would be disposed of for a more competent replacement, and only because it was the right thing to do. I no longer believe in this world.

Alex Gray has been in plenty of dressing rooms before - he captained England's sevens team and played club rugby for Newcastle Falcons and London Irish.

But they are nothing compared to what he is experiencing in his first season in American football.

"It's a bit funny, the guys rolling in in Ferraris," says Gray, the first English professional rugby union player to join the NFL.

The 26-year-old, who stands at 6ft 6in, weighs 18 stone and can run the 100m in 11 seconds, has signed for the Atlanta Falcons - Super Bowl runners-up last season - as a tight end in their practice squad.

Though he will not be allowed to play in the NFL this season, he will train with the first team in the hope of securing a deal from next year.

And having never previously played a game of American football, apart from on the computer, he finally got the opportunity against one of the most famous teams of all - the Miami Dolphins.

NFL viewership is at the lowest level since 2009.  As always, multiple explanations are given: political BS by players, retirement of popular players (like that never happens), huge numbers of blowouts, the hurricanes, a Presidential election that occurred a year ago (really, it is still given as an explanation).

But the bottom line is viewership is down again this season.  The NFL costs to the networks is massive.  If things don't change, the goose that laid the golden egg will be eaten.
Title: Re: 2017 Running Football Thread
Post by: Steelgrave on September 16, 2017, 08:17:19 PM
In my case, it's a growing perception that the NFL does not offer a level playing field when it comes to disciplining teams or individuals. Starting with the Saints and Bountygate and most certainly including Deflategate and the Ezekiel Elliott situation, the NFL seems to decide on a desired result and bend the evidence and rules accordingly. The Elliot suspension is simply the most egregious example of this, as well as the most recent. In general, the person the NFL entrusted to investigate Elliot ( a woman of color, no less ) found his accuser to be "not believable" and recommended no suspension or disciplinary action be taken against Elliot. For her efforts, she was excluded from the meeting with the Commissar Commissioner where Elliot's fate was decided. There are holes in the Deflategate case you could drive a truck through and who really doubts the Saints were made the poster children for bounties? There's long been the perception that favored teams get away with murder or a slap on the hand, while influential owners ***coughGiants*** exert undue pressure on the NFL to rule in ways which are advantageous to their team. Frankly, every time Goodell mentions "protecting the Shield" or "the integrity of the NFL" I want to puke. Goodell and the owners are more interested in punishing their players for smoking grass in the offseason than in the product they put on the field. It needs to change, and the first change needs to be retiring Goodell.
Title: Re: 2017 Running Football Thread

Goodell isn't going anywhere.  They pay him $40 million a year to eat an enormous amount of sh*t.  And he does it well.  So unless and until he grows tired of swimming in all that money, he will continue to be the owners and the medias whipping boy.

SEC games are usually interesting for various reasons, and I'm glad that both Vandy and Kentucky have been improving in recent years.

The Florida / TN game was weird, but also kind of typical for being weird. Both teams played like they were super-young and inexperienced, which is at least factually true for UTK -- not sure about Florida. UFlor took a reasonably big lead when UT simply could not capitalize on any successful drives, and after checking in and out I gave up on the game once the 4th quarter had solidly started and TN had thrown away the ball.

Next thing I heard from the parents, is that TN had taken a 1 point lead!  :o DID I FALL ASLEEP? DID REALITY SHIFT ME INTO AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE?! I had things to do I couldn't feasibly drop, to look in on this bizarrity, annnnnnd then Florida wins by a Hail Mary pass at the last moment.  ::) But a heck of a final quarter, once it really got going.

My brother and I (he follows much more closely than I do) have long theorized, since way back in our college days at UTK, that our team would perform substantially better, and more consistently, if we ran a permanent two-minute offense. Even psychologically, the Vols seem to habitually prefer it -- we really aren't happy as a team unless we're either staging a comeback against all odds, or flattening the other team like Godzilla on Bambi.

Also, we'd train our second string on both offense and defense to open the game and run as long as possible to the second half, bringing in our first string mid-game. The first stringers would hate it for ruining their "starting" stat, as professional prospects, but it would deepen the bench considerably and create gaps for us to exploit in the second half and especially the 4th quarter -- where the team historically prefers to be turbo-charging if possible anyway. (Heck, one season back in the mid-late 80s, the team's motto that year was "the fourth quarter belongs to us"! This attitude has not changed, only the teams' ability to achieve that goal from year to year.)

We'd do some other things, too, like more conditioning training and teaching all the defensive squad to focus on creating fumbles more than tackles.

It was a great game. I'm glad Houston showed up and made a close game of it. But Brady is the GOAT for a reason, 5 TD's in the face of that pass rush....damn! The Pats doubled J.J. Watts all day but that didn't leave enough bodies to keep Mercilus and Clowney out of the backfield. If Houston's DB's were healthy, it could have easily gone the other way.

But the Pats....no undefeated BS but that never mattered anyway. Pats still come through with the clutch plays. Watching Brady when the game is on the line is like watching Wilt Chamberlain with the clock running down. Only shorter.   8)

Meanwhile, UTKnoxville, favored by 28 points, strains to level-up against UMass (who, although totally losing this season, has at least made their games close, including this one). The papers were pretty critical around here (giant font headline "THAT WAS JUST UGLY".) While I think it's important to emphasize that this wasn't technically a loss ;), the attitude of one of the players quoted is a bit disturbingly... blase: "Well, it's a dub, so I ain't even trippin."  :bd: :hide:

We'll see whether that attitude survives Georgia next.

Faux Pellini is so awesome...

Quote
Dear Faux Pelini,

I am an Ohio State fan and it embarrasses me when my fellow Buckeye fans boo our team for subpar performance. Is booing your own team proper fan behavior?

Best,
Ashamed Buckeye

Well Ashamed,

When your next-door neighbor announces that he has the right to do something, you can be sure it’s something bad. There will a bizarre shrub or perverted statue in your future. In the same way, when a sports fan announces he’s doing something because it’s his right, you know something stupid is coming.

Some people just do what they want to do because they can. That’s the only reason they need. Most of us grasped the difference between Can and Should in kindergarten, but a select group of us carried Can/Should confusion into adulthood.

Boo Guy is one of these people.

When you ask Boo Guy why he’s booing his own team, he will say he paid for his ticket and it’s his right. There are lots of things that he has the right to do and chooses not to, of course. He can turn his basement into a termite farm; he can call his friend’s grandmother an ignorant slut; he can do somersaults down an escalator. Just because he can do something doesn’t mean he should.

But Boo Guy doesn’t care about that distinction. He makes himself feel better by making the players feel worse, and he does it because he can. That’s good enough for him and his kindergarten brain.

Yes, Ashamed, booing is our God-given right. But only idiots boo college kids, especially ones on their side.

Faux Pelini is absolutely wrong.

1.  Fans booing isn't always directed to the players.  Many times it's to the coaches.

2.  When you're a player for a team that is a top 10 program year and year out for decades, then you're expected to play like it.  There are hundreds of thousands of kids that don't ever get the change to play in college, even though they were a good high school player.  Those that are selected are getting scholarships and other perks that most students in college don't get.  When talking football and men's basketball, they're also the incentive to go play in the pro's and make millions of dollars.  So, yes, when you like a you're in jr high, then yes, you're going to get booed.  This is especially true when you have life long fans and players that have no emotional attachment to the team/school until they got recruited.

The SEC race is starting to take shape.

In the West, Mississippi State was overrated after beating amazingly overrated LSU.  LSU got beat by Troy State at home.
Auburn is playing much better offensively.  Their defense has been excellent all year holding Clemson to 14 points.
Alabama is crushing people.  Right now, Auburn is the only team in the West who looks to have a chance against Bama.
Although Texas A&M has only lost 1 game, they just finished the easy part of their schedule.  Their next four games are Bama, Florida, Mississippi St. & Auburn.  If they win two of these they will be fortunate.

In the East, Georgia is simply crushing people.  The beat down of Tennessee in Knoxville was amazing.
Florida keeps winning, barely.  But they keep finding ways to win.  Florida also has an amazingly easy schedule this year.  FSU is really weak.  Michigan beat them.  Their games against teams in the West are LSU and Texas A&M.  Georgia is the only tough game they have left.

And Dook got crushed by Miami

Some hilarity from The Ringer, talking about the Rams

Quote
This reflects most hilariously on Jeff Fisher, the phenomenally uninspiring coach who helmed the Rams from 2012 to 2016. (Actually, it is pretty inspiring that he kept NFL head coach jobs for so long despite being Jeff Fisher.) Fisher developed a reputation for mediocrity and milquetoast offenses, but swore 2016 would be the end of “7-9 bullshit.” Sure enough, his team started 4-9, he got fired, and as soon as the rest of Fisher’s staff disappeared, the Rams became competent. L.A. is currently being coached by Sean McVay, a teenager who has spent most of the season convincing the team’s older players to buy him vodka. And he’s made the team miles more effective. Every time the Rams put up points like this and win should make Fisher’s future employment seven to nine times more unlikely.

Favorite college stat so far?

Quote
Stanford’s Bryce Love has out-rushed 120 FBS teams by himself.

Love’s 1,088 rushing yards in five games would rank No. 21 as a team (Stanford ranks No. 8). His 217.6 yards per game on the ground would rank No. 30. Love also has seven runs of at least 50 yards. Only Notre Dame has as many as a team, and the next closest is Tulsa with five.

Moo U. is ranked in the top 25.  If they had not blown up on three plays (2 turnovers and a kick return) against a weak South Carolina squad, they would probably be in the top 12 or so.

I thought Moo U would be ranked higher than #20.  The loss to the game chickens must be pulling them down.  But if they win out the rest of the regular season and the ACC playoffs they will be in the top 7 at least.

Yeah, a bad first impression that results in national eyerolls and a collective "here we go again" will significantly drag down expectations.  And that FSU win looks worse and worse every week.

Kansas plays at TCU this weekend

Quote
The Jayhawks haven’t won a game away from Memorial Stadium since Sept. 12, 2009. Another loss would put Kansas into a tie for the second-longest road losing streak in college football history.
The road losing streak began eight years ago, on Oct. 17, 2009. Back then, Charlie Weis was still at Notre Dame. Blockbuster was still a successful business. “Game of Thrones,” the iPad, Uber, Instagram and The Athletic did not exist.

BS: I don’t mean to be a dick, but we’re talking about the Vikings—isn’t it more likely that the Packers miraculously sneak into the playoffs at 9-7, then Aaron Rodgers comes back for Round 1 and beats them in Minnesota, then wins the Super Bowl in Minnesota four weeks later?

NC State's playing like canned ass

They were up 14-7 and now down 35-14 with 10 min to play

State's receivers aren't getting any separation on their routes, plus Nyheim Hines is out for the game, so ND is loading the box and forcing Gallaspy to run into 8 guys, and they just can't do it.

That's a good point MD.  When Kelly coached in the PAC12, I'm not sure that there was a lot of competition for a far amount of time.  But if you look at Big10, Big12, SEC, and AAC right now, there are 2 or 3 teams battling it out for the top spots in those conferences.  But you don't have that in the PAC12.

What I'm reading elsewhere is that Chip doesn't want to have to spend a lot of time glad-handing and schmoozing with boosters, and that's a key element of being an SEC coach.

PAC-12 fans - outside of Southern Cal, and maybe UW - don't have the same access expectations the SEC does (and to a lesser extent the Big-We-Can't-Count up there w/ y'all).  Here in ACC-land, there's only 2-3 football teams like that, but a LOT of hoops squads.

SEC fans just care more, b/c it's a lot more central to their self-identity.  You gotta live there to truly appreciate it.

Right?!  That goes on everywhere, not just the SEC.  I had also heard he's not a big fan of recruiting and the business of being a coach.  All he wants to do is X's and O's.  Although, if that's true, why did Philadelphia let him wreck their team for a few years as Head Coach AND General Manager?

Heck, every coach would love to be an X's and O's coach and leave things like recruiting, working with boosters/AD's, making sure the appropriate paperwork is in order for the governing bodies (yes, even high schools coaches have to do this).

Sounds like he should sit at home and play Madden.

I wish all of you could visit Auburn briefly on Friday.  You could see half a billion dollars of RVs within a 8 mile radius.
Unless you have attended a monster SEC game, it is hard to fathom.

My extended family (with one lone exception) has been in Auburn for a really big Auburn-Alabama game.  The number of people that come, with monster massively expensive RVs is difficult to comprehend if you don't experience it live.

The stadium holds just short of 90,000 people.  There will probably be an additional 90,000 in Auburn who will be watching the game at tailgates, bars or house parties.

For perspective, Auburn itself has 60,000 residents (including students).

The line is Auburn +4.  Alabama has better talent, but they will have to show up, play hard, and avoid mistakes to win.

I agree with your assessment of Alabama's need to perform up to their talent.  And I heard plus four and a half.  I have yet to come upon a customer of mine who has invited me down to a tailgate in Tuscaloosa in their RV, but, I've seen the beasties you are speaking of.  Magnificent creatures.  Wish I could see the herd of them.  Good game to you and Auburn and Roll Tide!

I challenge anyone to find a better spread of tailgating food than you'll find at an LSU home game.  It's just not gonna happen.

Indeed.  I've been to a fair share of games in Jordan-Hare and it never ever gets old.  The Iron Bowl is on a level beyond comprehension.

My tailgate group fizzled out after 10 years.  We had a whole roast pig for 1 game, bbq cookoff for another and a low country seafood boil for a third every year.  But our menu beat 95 out of 100 groups at Auburn.

We still have a big cooking group.  Today 7 guys were at my house.  We fried 9 turkeys for various meals for tomorrow.  We played poker for 5 hours.  Our meal for poker was marinated steak tenderloin, Texas toast, roast potatoes and a big salad.  This was a normal poker meal.  The host gets 5 per person for the meal.  Today was odd because we had it at my house, but I only made the salad.  My house is designed to entertain, so this worked well.

We sometimes have wives\girlfriends who come just for the meal.

Once we went to 5 bucks for the meal food improved and those lacking the space (or spouse willingness) to host stopped feeling guilty.

Our neighbors aren't the kinds of Bama fans mentioned above, and they're kind of jerks in general.  Humorously, right now I'm watching them take down all their Bama stuff from their door and lawn.  Guess the weather isn't fair enough.

Amazing what hiring credible coaches who are willing to tailor an offensive system to their personnel will do, right?

Well, that and Wade Phillips. At this point I sincerely believe that he could construct a top ten defense from a bellhop, 3 traffic cones, a blocking sled, 2 waterboys and 4 bales of hay.

Best thing about the Vols season so far: my 10 year old niece writing a birthday card to my Dad, and at the end telling him, "Surprise! Butch Jones fired!"

Her father raised his daughters orange.  :smitten: (To be fair, they've tried to keep up the Razorpig blood, too, since his wife hails from that neck of the woods.)

Hopefully this will count as a seasoning season for our relatively young team, but being destroyed by Vandy... man... I'm glad for Vandy, I always feel sorry about beating up on them every year, but that's a hideous side effect of whatever chaos rituals are throwing Niffle into spasms elsewhere this season.

Incidentally, while I would still bet on LSU for champion tailgate food, I do expect the Volunteer fans could give them a run for the money.

^^Yep, he was a terrible head coach in Denver, Buffalo and Dallas. He's just not cut out for it. Pretty much a defensive genius, though. All because he actually tailors his concepts to his personnel. It's sad that so few coaches actually do that, always trying to shoehorn players into their precious scheme and then wondering why it doesn't work properly.  ::)

He actually has a decent win/loss record as a HC (83 wins, 67 losses)  but I wouldn't argue that he's better than average at that position....but as a Defensive Coordinator he should be in the Hall of Fame when he retires. How many defenses does Wade have to turn around in a season to prove that point? That's the man's niche and he may be better than anyone in the league at it.

LOL.

I think the real question is whether the committee want's 2 teams from the same conference.  I'm thinking they don't.  But the screwed up royally last year when they put OSU in, even though they didn't win either their division or conference.  If they had put in Penn St (as they should have), then, depending on how the games come out tonight, would be easier to make.

OSU didn't deserve to be in last year, but I think the committee was really wanting an Bama-OSU championship game.  Now, they may have a big mess on their hands.

I wish that were true, but, the narrative from the committee this year will be, 'Conference champions matter.'  I think that for two reasons, one, nobody seems to want two representatives from the same Conference, and two, OSU is as big a name as 'Bama, so, their conscience should be clear ignoring their reasoning for including OSU last year when they didn't win their Conference.

If Bama and Georgia end up playing each other in the championship game, I think it could end up having one of the lowest TV ratings since the BCS.  That's not a knock on either team, I just don't think most of the country will tune in for two teams from the same conference.

I'm not sure either team can get past their first round matchup.  But if they do, how they got there will help drive the story.  Along with the mentor/mentee relationship between Saban and Kirby Smart.  And I have found out there is a Yankees level hatred nationally for Alabama.  I think there will be plenty of eyeballs on their televisions if it's 'Bama/Georgia.  They just gotta get there first ;)

I think they should have put Penn State in last year and we wouldn't be in this mess.  Just because it benefits my team this year, doesn't mean I like it.  I would much rather reserve it for Conference champs exclusively.  But they won't do that.  For two reasons: 1) this kind of mess has people talking about it and there's no such thing as 'bad press,' and 2) they have five participating Conferences and only four spots.  If they made it explicitly Conference champs you risk having a multi loss participant and ALWAYS one Conference left out.  This way, they have leeway to include anyone they choose and there's no 'definitive,' way to measure it.  So you'll revert back to 1).
Title: Re: 2017 Running Football Thread

Moreover, if you just put in conference champs, you've got to be prepared for some shitty teams...

Syracuse won conference titles with records of 9-3, 9-4, 8-4, and 6-6.
K State finished as a 10-3 conf champ; so did Colorado.
How about a 7-4 Texas?
Or best of all, your 7-5 Wisconsin Badgers...

From Stewart Mandel's bowl previews

Quote
30. New Orleans (Dec. 16): Troy (10-2) vs. North Texas (9-4). The committee snubbed Troy. Seriously. Just like Alabama, its best win was against LSU. And unlike Alabama, the Trojans won a conference title.

1.  I hate Ohio State.  Probably as much or more than anyone here hates any other school

2.  The NC State bowl preview wasn't particularly funny.
Quote
13. Sun (Dec. 29): N.C. State (8-4) vs. Arizona State (7-5). Strangely, ousted ASU coach Todd Graham is still in charge through the bowl game. His successor, Herm Edwards, should get a good opportunity here to assess the roster he’ll be letting his coordinators coach next season.

fun tidbit about the game, from the Navy side

Quote
It’s a pretty safe bet that Malcolm Perry will be Navy’s starting quarterback next season. He’s, uh, kind of, sort of earned it.

(snip)

Quote
The 5-9, 185-pound sophomore could potentially become Navy’s biggest star since Keenan Reynolds and emerge as a dark horse Heisman Trophy contender next season. Prior to the final month of this season, he’d been best known as The Guy Who Got Pulled From The Stands To Play Quarterback.

During last season’s opener, Perry was a plebe and marched into the stadium along with the rest of the Brigade of Midshipmen, wearing his dress whites. When Navy quarterback Tago Smith went down with a season-ending injury in the middle of the game — and then third-string quarterback Zach Abey was suspended for a violation of team rules — Perry got plucked from the bleachers to dress in (football) uniform as the backup quarterback for the second half. He got into the game late in the third quarter, with Navy up big.

Hue has mishandled DeShone Kizer all year and killed the kid's confidence. Even Jeff Fisher might have done better. Hell, 7-9, Fisher's usual, would be a remarkable year for the Browns. And speaking of Fisher (say his name three times and he will appear), Mike Florio on ProFootballTalk.com quipped that if you wanted to add viewership to an otherwise unmemorable game, the loser of Bears vs. Bengals should be forced to hire Fisher as their next Head Coach   :2funny:
Title: Re: 2017 Running Football Thread

I liked Fisher in Nashville.  I really thought he was going to be consistently good there.  Then it was a series of mediocre to poor results and out he went.  What really puts a fine point on it for me is the difference in the Rams from last year to this year.  With basically the same skill players, McVay has produced a juggernaut.  And they are fun to watch.  And I hate the Rams.
Title: Re: 2017 Running Football Thread
Post by: Steelgrave on December 22, 2017, 07:05:31 PM
Fisher walks and talks like a coach, but he's parlayed one Super Bowl run into two decades of mediocrity. He's a smoother talking John Fox. It's not just the Rams, I read a comparison of the last four QB's who have started for him and are still playing. Each had banner years after Fisher left.

It's looking good for the purple, Martok. Philly may be the only first seeded team in recent memory to go down in their first playoff game, leaving the Vikes with home field advantage. For the record, some of the first football I remember watching was the Vikes vs. Raiders. I had a bet with my dad on that game, loser did dishes. I picked the Vikes because of their cool purple uniforms!

The Rose Bowl was one of the best games of all time unless you're a Defensive Coordinator. The Tide's defense looked unbeatable last night but their offense continues to limp along so, the Bulldogs maybe the smart bet on the 8th. I've followed UCF all year long and was really happy they won yesterday. Congrats Knights.  O0   But I hear coach Frost is taking his entire staff with him to Nebraska so next year they'll probably be back in the cellar.

That would be January 16, 1994 against my Houston Oilers. Jack Pardee was the Oiler's HC, Kevin Gilbride was OC, and some dude named Buddy Ryan was the DC. Warren Moon completed another spectacular regular season by folding in the playoffs yet again (which is why I never thought Moon deserved to be in the Hall of Fame). Houston went from 12-4 to 2-14 the next year and completed their betrayal of Houston fans by slinking off to Tennessee a couple of years later.

Sad that I only just now found this article.

https://deadspin.com/why-your-team-sucks-2017-houston-texans-1798427225

The article is pretty spot-on, and the comments are hilariously on the nose:

Quote
Raj:
The saddest part of being a Texans fan isn’t that our best QB ever is Matt Schaub. It’s that our second best is either the five years of David Carr or the one-year stretches of either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Brian Hoyer.

Grant:
Our best off-season move was getting rid of Brock Osweiler, the dickhead we guaranteed $37m ($21m paid by Texans) not even 12mos ago without ever having met him. We paid $21m to a QB that Cleveland wants to cut but cant (but still just might). Jesus.

Stacy:
Our greatest win in Franchise history was our very first game, when we beat the Cowboys 19-10 thanks to Quincy Carter’s cocaine habit.

Andrew:
Also it only usually takes about 1-2 games before the callers on AM radio still say we should go out and sign Vince Young.

Matthew:
Because we have arguably the most talented defense in the league, borderline Top 10 talents at WR and RB and we are destined to forever be 9-7 or worse. Also, because I actually saw people walking around town last summer wearing Brock Osweiler jerseys.

...and on, and on, and on...

Was driving down to a client site this morning and was listening to Golic and Wingo.  They had Herbstreit on and they asked about Saban leaving for the NFL.  Herbie said he doesn't think Saban will ever leave college football.  He loves it at that level.  He thinks when Saban leaves Alabama, it'll be for a broadcasting gig.  In fact, Herbie is hoping it would be to College Game Day.

I'd love to have Nick go in front of the cameras and show some personality.  It's my understanding that he has one ;)  Saban is 66 years old.  My opinion is that he can live quite comfortably with never going back to the pros.  5 National Championships in nine years and 6 over all.  Every year is a new crop of 4 and 5 star recruits keeping the cupboard full.  Acknowledgment as one of the best, if not THE best, coaches in the game.  Yeah,  I think I could retire happy with those accomplishments :)

Saban was on an ESPN roundtable show with Meyer and a handful of other CFB coaches talking about how they would "fix" college football if they had their way, and commenting on different proposals the talking heads were throwing out there on things like eligibility, paying players, transferring schools, scheduling, etc.

Saban and Meyer are both ridiculously smart & articulate, and have clearly spent a lot of time thinking hard about the issues in their sport.  No, they aren't going to cure cancer or stop the arms race or anything, but they are focusing on their sport.

it would be nice if all that talent translated into wins on a consistent basis

NC State's defense in 2004 went 13 deep on future NFL players (seriously - all 11 starters and the top 2 backups played in the NFL: Manny Lawson, Stephen Tulloch, Tank Tyler, Mario Williams, John McCargo, Oliver Hoyte, Lamont Reid, Pat Thomas, Andre Maddox, etc etc).  And the offense chipped in another couple of players with Chris Colmer, TJ Williams, Brian Clark, Leroy Harris,

They went 5-6 b/c they had a QB that threw interceptions like Mirth throws out pickup lines.

Jags might have just sealed it with that latest TD to go back up 2 scores.

I'm just checking the box score, but Bortles must be having a good second half. His passing yards went from 96 to 214. And Fournette looks like he's having a monster day.

I'm not a Steelers fan, but I was looking forward to having them in Foxboro next weekend. Pretty big upset if the Jags hold on for the win.

I dunno - division winner, top 3 defense, already beat the crap out of Pittsburgh in Heinz Field...  maybe not as big an upset as we think if we're not looking at reputation over the past 10 years?

jags already put 40+ on em during the season and doing so again in the playoffs. wouldnt consider it to much of an upset. Steelers played in a weak division this year. Bengals and Ravens had 4th quarter leads on em but let em off the hook. They just werent playing well down the stretch and that Patriot game sucked all the life out of them. Wont be surprised if Jags roll into foxboro and get a win. Now that would be an upset.

Maybe. Still, to win at Heinz in the playoffs is no small accomplishment.

I do think time is catching up with Roethlisberger. He's taken a lot of punishment over the years.

oh yeah winning on the road especially at heinz field is something to hang your hat on but hopefully the Jags arent content. Jags defense will need to score. I dont see Bortles beating Brady.

Nor do I, but.....

The book on beating Brady is pressure, and the Jags delivered a ton of pressure on opposing QB's all season. And when it comes to beating the Patriots, who better to play the Devil's Advocate than Tom Coughlin, the guy most responsible for denying the Pats two more rings and the guy given the most credit for the Jag's turnaround this year? Personally, I will still put my money on the Pats but I think it's gonna be a close game either way.

I dont see Bortles beating Brady.

As long Bortles doesn't try to beat Brady by himself, they'll be competitive in the game.  Hand off to Fournette, don't turn it over, play great defense, and channel your inner 2002 Bucs, and you'll stay in the game.

A LOT of disappointed people around here that are Saints fans...LOL!!

Never saw the Jags beating the Steelers...wow, that must have been a game.

I did see bits early on of the Pats/Titans. Never thought in a million years I'd ever root for the Titans, but oh, look, the Titans rolled over and died. What a shocker.

Predictions: Pats will beat the crap out of the Jags, and it doesn't matter who wins with the Vikes/Eagles, because the Pats will kill them in the Super Bowl, too.  :buck2:

Hope the Vikings/Eagles game is good. That looks like it could be an old-school throw down.

I've been a quiet Pats fan for 30+ years.  But playing fantasy football has changed my appreciation to individual performance over rooting for a team.  I still love the Bucs and the Saints, but, I really just want to watch great performances in big games.  Nothing would make me happier than for Minnesota to win the whole thing.  Doing it at home.  And handing Brady a loss on the stage he (rightly) feels like belongs to him.
Title: Re: 2017 Running Football Thread

The Jags put on a great show. They certainly have no reason to hang their heads. If the Vikings advance, I'll be rooting for them. If it's the Eagles, I want to see Brady and Co. completely dismantle Philly in a humiliating loss for the worst fans in football. 35-0 at halftime versus Philly and I'll still be glued to my big screen.

But ten appearances in the Super Bowl out of 52 for the Pats....damn, that's quite a record right there.

Yeah, I think by the fourth quarter, playoff experience really started to be a factor. Especially after last year's win over the Falcons, the Pats know they are in it until the clock expires. The Jags gave them all they could handle but couldn't close. The Pats...the Pats are closers.

There's been 52 Super Bowls, counting this year.

On the AFC side, 31 of them have included either New England, Pittsburgh, Denver, or Miami. (and Buffalo, Oakland, and the Colts give you another 11, since one of the Colts games was before they moved to the AFC).  So basically, 7 teams have kind of locked down the AFC over time.

On the NFC side, 29 had either Dallas, SF, Green Bay, Washington, or the Giants, but other than Minnesota's 4-games-o'-never-even-havin'-a-lead, there's not another consistent NFC team.
You get a lot more 'occasional' participants (i.e., more hope for more teams!) in the NFC

I have no interest in the Super Bowl this Sunday, tbh. I kind of like the Eagles as I know a few people that love them, but I despise the Pats. On top of that the commercials have declined in hilarity a lot in the last several years.

Besides, the Pats will just pound the Eagles, so who cares.

If I hear the Eagles are making a game out of it, I might watch. But if it's anything like that last minute BS from last year, no thanks.

The Pats spotted the Falcons a 25 point lead. What more do you want from them?

To have lost that game by over 50 points.

I'd watch a Super Bowl where the Eagles win 73-0 and keep trying to run up the score as the clock runs out.

To be honest, regardless of outcome, I'd rather watch the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet.

Tuned it in while doing laundry, when there was about 9 minutes left in the second. Saw a Chris Pratt commercial that was decent (can't remember the beer name, so it wasn't all that great I guess), saw a GMC commercial that was very annoying, and the rest are pretty meh.

'Course the Eagles were winning 15-3 when I tuned it in, and now those retards are letting the Pats score with aplomb, so off it went. I'll check in later just to see, but F that noise.

Yeah, the commercials suck a big one. Maybe they shot their wad in the 1st - dunno, didn't see any of it till close to halftime.

Saw a bit of the Puppy Bowl. More entertaining than any of the SB commercials.

i stayed up as long as i could and watched especially the opening ceremonies stuff ( Ha, no one dared 'to politicize' into the face of the 15 medal of honor winner invited) and the first quarter all on the projector. Which was great. like being in the stadium and could actually see the players brawling, the tackles, and the receives and all the details...  got real tired (Pils beer was involved ;-) ) and went to bed to see the rest on a little TV set ....and soon passed out close to the end of the second quarter ...as expected.

one of the bazillion of boring commercial breaks (on German TV) had just killed me. it were always the same few repetitive, maybe a little shuffled.  of course they had tried to add a little 'superbowl flavor' to their cheap adds. like a twentysomething girl hard mongering a dating agency over and over and over again every break and catches a football draped on the cosy sofa, or wares a helmet instead just lying on the same sofa as in the wellknown standard add, and used some football terms in her modified slogan (sport terms that nobody understand here anyway, beside the hardcore fans)...

by the way
why is it called football, when they only kick a ball as a special tactical move a few times a game
shouldn't it be called American Rugby

and is it allowed to kick the ball when ever a player want. so did someone instead of throwing the football tried to just kick it a very long distance to a receiver who grabs it in the air, and try to run the few missing yards into the end zone?

Back when you had "association football" and "rugby football" they morphed into "soccer"/"football" and "rugby", leaving  "football" unclaimed, which at the time of it's invention was far more rugby-like.  Things like the forward pass were introduced years after the game started and was named as "football"

A lot of soccer fans refer to it derisively as "handegg" instead of "football", which is equally stupid.

I called it a night early as I had my first gym visit in a very long time to do today, but I should have stuck with it. Gotta hand it to the Eagles. Not a huge fan of theirs but I am if they play the Pats or the Cowboys, I guess. Glad the Pats finally got put down and Brady didn't get yet another ring.  :)

For anyone that didn't see the Super Bowl, including our fellow Grogs overseas, here's Super Bowl LII in 26 minutes. Without the commercials and most of Cris Collingsworth ejaculating every five minutes about how Brady is just soooooo :dreamer: :dreamer: :dreamer: :dreamer:
