Title: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on March 26, 2017, 11:31:05 AM
New thread for Age of Steam PBEM game between myself, egg_salad, l'amour, and jwoodal04.

I had some trouble getting the module to work initially. Turns out that the module that I had downloaded from the VASSAL website was not compatible with the extension that I got from the Yahoo group. Once I downloaded the module from the Yahoo group, everything seems to work fine. I've uploaded that module to dropbox. I *think* if you just copy and paste the module and the file folder with all the extensions in it into a folder on your computer, when you load the module into VASSAL, it should load all the extensions. If everything works right, you should see everything in the image below when you open a rust belt map.

I just assigned colors arbitrarily. I skipped the second blue color to try to keep the colors as distinct as possible. The logfile attached below goes through all the setup. The result of the random initial turn order was Mike-me-l'amour-Woodall. (This just impacts the initial turn order for bidding in the initial auction.)

The first thing we have to do is to issue shares. (The general recommendation is two shares for inexperienced players, as that should ensure that you don't go negative on turn 1).

Mike is up to do that. I think until we get to the "Build track" step in the sequence of play, we can just do everything in the forums.

I've attached the .vlog file below. I've setup a folder in the dropbox folder for files for this game. There's a .vsav of the setup there (can't upload that file type here).

I can't seem to download the mod in the dropbox folder. Anyone had a problem?

Haven't tried yet.

I checked online and there doesn't seem to be any dropbox setting that is out of whack. Can you pull other files? I was able to download from the website, but that might be because I uploaded it.

I have Dropbox mapped to a drive on my PC.  I copied to the .mod file to my C: drive fine.

Everything else is fine. I'll have a faff around with it later or, Rex, you can attach it to an email if you have a spare minute.

I shot you an e-mail with the module. Hopefully it gets through.

Thanks Rex. The email attachment didn't work either but I tried on a different browser and it was fine, so my browser was just being a dick about it. Anyway, I'll issue two shares as well.

Mike is up for the auction.

Edit:  Everyone issued 2 shares, so we're all at $20 now.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: egg_salad on March 30, 2017, 11:55:29 AM
I'll bid $1 for turn order.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on March 30, 2017, 12:19:42 PM
Shares raise $5 worth of capital in AOS, I believe.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on March 30, 2017, 12:35:43 PM
Shares raise $5 worth of capital in AOS, I believe.

This is correct. At game start, everyone has already issued 2 shares ($10). Everyone then decides how many additional shares to issue. We each issued 2, giving everyone an additional $10 and a total of $20.

Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on March 30, 2017, 12:36:07 PM
I bid $3.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on March 30, 2017, 12:37:32 PM
Ah! I should read the rules. I played this once like 5 years back, but I don't really remember the details. For instance, why I would bid for turn order on Turn 1.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on March 30, 2017, 12:49:00 PM
2 reasons probably--1) so you can get the action that you want and 2) so you will build first/earlier and get the route that you want.

If you don't have a particular plan, or you have 4 or more starting options in your mind, then bidding for 1st turn may not be all that important.

At Christmas, I got to play with some people, one of whom had played AoS quite a bit previously (though not recently, I think). On his bid in the 1st turn, he passed, saying "I can see at least four things I could do on my first turn" (It was 4-player). I'm not that good. I can see a couple of plays that seem better than the alternatives, so it's worth it to me to spend a bit to try to get it.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game

I bid 4

Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on March 30, 2017, 07:41:33 PM
Mike will be 4th then, and owes nothing. The next person to drop out will owe 1/2 their bid. The final 2 will owe their full bid.

I think I'll pass and go third. I owe $2 (I bid $3, the rule is you round your payment up...the general rule of thumb in AoS is the game hates you, when in doubt about a rule, choose the option that is worst for you).

l'amour/Woodall will owe their full final bids, whatever those may be.

Turn Order/Payment Owed

Woodall:  $6

I have updated cash, turn order and actions and I have built three bits of excellent track for 6 dollars. This is the first time I've played the game so I hope I'm doing it properly.

Woodall is next.

Post by: rstites25 on March 31, 2017, 07:22:42 PM
Yeah, or you could manually load each of the extensions. But it's easier to just create the file folder in the proper format so it loads everything when you load the module.

I think the lack of liquidity is what makes the game. The game seems to largely be about figuring out how to get your money back out of a company after you buy it in the auction.

Do you guys want to go again?
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on April 01, 2017, 07:14:58 PM
Yeah, I don't want it to be too liquid, but seems like the early/early-mid game is too tight on funds, not a whole lot of valuation, seems more about turn order. And we're probably just bad. That's likely a big part of it. I'd play again.

I moved a red cube from W2-BE-W1 for two income.

Income:
Rex: 3
l'amour/Woodall: 2
Mike:  0

Expenses:
Rex/Mike/Woodall:  6 (4 shares and 2 engine links)
l'amour:  5 (4 shares and 1 engine link)

Net:
Rex:  -3
Woodall:  -4
l'amour:  -3
Mike: -6

I took care of adding goods to the map. No production, so no new goods drawn from the bag to put on the goods board.

Income:

Rex:  +8 ($13 total)
Woodall:  +5 ($13)
l'amour: +4 ($7)
Mike:  +4 ($11)

Expenses ($1 x shares + $1 x links)

Rex:  6 shares + 3 links = -$9 ($4 total)
Woodall:  6 shares + 2 links = -$8 ($5 total)
l'amour:  5 shares + 2 links = -$7 ($0 total)
Mike:  6 shares + 2 links = -$8 ($3 total)

Income Reduction:  NONE

Goods Growth:

Woodall gets to draw 2 random goods from the Goods "deck" and then place each good on any space on the "Goods" display. NOTE:  these do NOT go directly to the board. f

After that, we'll need to roll 4 dice for each side (white/black) on the Goods display and place the top most good for each number rolled on the map. If a column also has a lettered (urbanization) city, the numbered city good and lettered city good will be placed.

You can either do this in your logfile Woodall, or I can take care of it after your turn.

Also, I sent an e-mail to the admin at Boardgamecore to get added to the Great Zimbabwe beta test. From what I understand, it's pretty polished at this point, there's just a few minor things keeping it from being released to the general public and the admin just hasn't had the time to do it. If any of you guys are interested in getting a game of it going, you can e-mail him at admin@boardgamecore.net and ask to be added to the Beta and he'll do so.

I bid 3.

Zimbabwe is a cool game but I can't start another game right now so I'll wait until it's done and on the site. It's got a lot of similarities to FCM so I wonder if it will be similarly less fun online than in real life..

You are correct.

Before Loans:

Rex: $4
Mike:  $3
l'amour: $0
Woodall:  $5

Everyone issued 2 loans, except Woodall who did 1. I bid $6 and l'amour $5

Rex: $4 + $10 - $6 = $8
Mike:  $3 + $10 - $0 = $13
l'amour: $0 + $10 - $5 = $5
Woodall:  $5 + $5 - $0 = $10

I moved Woodall's loco up 1 space.

l'amour is up b/c of 1st Build.

It's a constant grind, especially early. I played multiple games solo several years ago, and that was probably the most mentally taxing solo experience I've ever had. I was playing rust belt, but with the full complement of players, so the map was incredibly crowded. Coming up with a basic plan for all the players was just too much work (I even started using Excel to track how much each player would need for its "plan"). It's like it's a combination of the aspects necessary to make an interesting multiplayer solo Euro game and the butterfly effects of player interaction that are typical of Winsome games. You're constantly fighting against the game to keep your ahead above water (like a multiplayer solitaire Euro) but also having to deal with what what the other players are doing. Are they going to steal my cube? My build? My action? You can mitigate the inter-player problems by bidding to go first, but you compound the way the game is working against you by going further in debt.

Something to keep in mind Woodall, if you deliver that other Gray cube for another $3 income, you'll be at $11, which is just across the threshold where you'll go back two spaces at the end of the turn (you'd still get $11 this turn). But if you make a 2-link delivery, you'll not lose anything this turn (but only get $10 cash).

Yeah, I played it a long time ago and also Age of Industry. Didn't like the development pace of Age of Industry. Thought Brass was paced a lot better, but I think I'd honestly like something in the middle of both of them. I think it is probably a better game for me than Age of Steam, but quite a bit more opaque and harder to get folks to the table. Not that I play economic games face to face or anything. :)

Cash + Income - Expenses

Rex:  $2 +$14 - $11 (3 links/8 shares) = $5
Mike: $4 +$8 - $10 (2 links/8 shares) = $2
l'amour: $1 + $8 - $9 (2 links/7 shares) = $0
Woodall: $3 +$9 - $10 (3 links/7 shares) = $2

Income Reduction:  I lose $2 to drop to $12

Goods Growth:

White: 2,3,2,5 =
Red/Purple for White-2
Red for White-3
(Tile B is not out)
Yellow for White-5
(Tile C is not out)

Black:  2,2,5,6

I've got the App downloaded to my phone. I tried to go through the tutorial quite awhile ago and I couldn't really get a sense of what to do. Then a few weeks ago, Heavy Cardboard did a teaching stream. I watched the rules explanation and things made a bit more sense. I tried playing through a game on the app and made it through the first era and quit due to losing interest.

I think that if I got the game out and tried to manually run through a game, I'd probably like it more. But there's a certain disconnect for me in economic games where my goal is "VP" rather than cash (or net worth). It seems like the goal of Brass ought to be maximizing profits given its subject matter rather than "VPs." I guess the VPs could be a proxy for what your long-term profitability is, but there's a mental disconnect for me in the conversion.

It's probably like Woodall's experience with FCM. Starting with automated rules enforcement rather than learning it and enforcing the rules myself was probably not the way to go.

I'd certainly be up for playing it with you guys at some point, though.

Speaking of games to play going forward...

I'm wondering if giving 18XX a go again might be worth it? Mike, I think your AAC 1846 game went pretty smoothly, and I think us 4 could get through a game relatively quickly using a Google Docs and Board18(?). I think that would be much smoother than using Rails since the game could be accessed with merely internet access. I don't know how it is for rules enforcement, but at this point I feel pretty comfortable in the broadstrokes of 18XX rules generally (though I might miss some of the edge cases).

The best thing is that they have 1817, so we could eventually work our way up to that.  :-"
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on May 09, 2017, 10:47:42 PM
I think the stock rounds are pretty slow, but I'd be willing to give it a shot. Only ever played 18AL and I feel like that certainly isn't the best representation of the genre. I did start a solo game of 1889 and it was better, but I never finished. Just wanted to check it out a bit. I own 18MEX, 1846, 1849, and 1889. All DTG! (used to own 18TN but stupidly sold it)

As long as we have a good google sheet to use, Board18 works ok.  Rules enforcement is almost nil, but we can handle that.

I gotta say, 1817 intrigues me, from just descriptions I have heard.

It must have been because we had already started other games when we called the death sentence on the 1830 game.

It was not long ago, for crapsakes.  Memory is the 2nd thing to go, I guess.  And don't ask me what is first, because I forgot it.

If anyone is interested in getting a copy of Rolling Stock, ArtsCow has a deal where you can get 3 custom printed decks of cards for ~$18, which basically what you need for RS. Someone has already uploaded the files to ArtsCow, so it's just a matter of printing them.

It's how I got my physical copy and it works really well. All you need to do is print out the rules and come up with something to mark Synergies (cubes, or whatever)

Rex: $5 + $5 = $10
Mike: $2 + $5 = $7

Move the blue from dark 1 to light 4 for 3 if you want to proceed, I can tackle it from home, if not.

Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on May 15, 2017, 11:23:32 AM
Starting Cash + Income - Expenses = Current Cash

Rex: $2 +$14 - $14 (5 links/9 shares) = $2
Mike: $3 +$10 - $12 (3 links/9 shares) = $1
l'amour: $0 +$11 -$10 (3 links/7 shares) = $1
Woodall: $0 +$15 - $10 (3 links/7shares) = $5

Income Reduction:
Rex:  $14--->$12
Mike: $10--->$10
l'amour: $11--->$9
Woodall: $15--->$13

Production:  l'amour needs to draw two cubes and place them on the goods display.

After that, you can either do the Goods Growth or I can do it this evening.

No. If you have a plan that requires building very specific track and think someone else may build it. There's just other things I tend to value  more (loco, primarily).

You're up for 1st build anyway. I think the only things that need updated are: (1) turn order; (2) special action choices; and (3) money (one of my posts above should list the adjustment).

I heard that these days the cool cats post 3 logs at once, so that's what I've done.

2. Updating cash/order/actions.
3. My actual turn.

L'amour:
Just to validate what you did and my understanding of the rules.. you took over Rex's partial track section because he did not build on it last turn?  I was not paying attention over there.  If he had built on it last turn, you could not have taken it over, correct?
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on May 21, 2017, 09:36:14 AM
Yeah. I just built that last turn. If I didn't extend it this turn, then my marker would be removed (not sure if that happens after my build or after everyone has build). After the marker is removed, then someone else can take it over.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: l'amour on May 21, 2017, 10:44:49 AM
Am I reading it right then, if an unfinished track is finished by another player then they take ownersip?
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on May 21, 2017, 10:50:54 AM
Quote
If an Unfinished Track Section is not extended by the player during their turn by placing a further Track tile, then their Track Ownership Locomotive is removed and the Unfinished Track Section becomes unowned. If another player extends that unowned, Unfinished Track Section they may claim ownership of the Track by placing one of their Track Ownership Locomotives on it. Redirection (see page 9) by itself is not an extension.

I built it last turn, so it's "owned" by me. If I don't extend it this turn, it will become "unowned." Once it becomes unowned, it can be extended by anyone.

I think that will put me out of the game for sure.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on May 23, 2017, 08:08:09 AM
You added 3 links of track, I think. 2 are legal. 1 is not. (The only illegal part is the link connecting to my track.) Are you wanting all of them removed, or just the illegal bit?

I built my track.

Looking at the last screen cap before we chose actions, it showed Mike at 3 for Loco, and it was still 3 in the most recent log, so I went ahead and moved it ahead to 4.

Woodall is up.

Post by: rstites25 on May 23, 2017, 01:25:20 PM
The mnemonic they used on the Heavy Cardboard teach and play (I think that's where I saw it), is to remove the marker from the action space after it's occurred. It really only helps for Loco, since that's the only one that can be immediately implemented, but not have a game-impact until much later. It's not as big a deal for us since we have an archive of how the game has progressed that we can verify what has happened.

Player
Starting Cash
Income

Current Cash
Current Income

Mike

$18
$14 (10S/4L)
$6

l'amour

$13 (9S/4L)
$1
$10
Woodall
$4
$19
$11 (8S/3L)
$12
$17

For Production, I drew a Red and Gray. I placed the red on White-5 and the gray on white-6.

Roll was 6-2-1-2 for White

6:  Gray on WHite-6 (D is not out)
2: Nothing
1: Blue on White 1

Roll was 2-2-3-3 for Black

2:  Blue and Red on "F"
3: Yellow on Black-3 and Yellow and Purple on "G"

Just to give an idea of where the VPs stand:
VP= 3 x Income -3 X Issued Shares +1 x Completed Track tile/section = 3 x (Income - Issued Shares) + Track

Rex:  3 x 6 + 15 = 33
Mike: 3 x 6 + 13 = 31 (I believe that Mike gets 3 points for all the spurs coming out of the one town hex since there is actually still track there)
l'amour:  3 x 1 + 10 = 13
Woodall: 9 x 3 + 13 = 40

l'amour-Mike-Rex-Woodall is the order for issuing shares.

EDIT:  Fixed Woodall and Mike's Current cash (forgot to add starting cash for both).  :-[
EDIT:  Added corrected .vlog

Are any of you Yahoos interested in playing a game of Polis? There's a pretty good implementation of it on Boardgamearena (I think). I played a solo game and an opposed game quite some time ago. Unfortunately, the guy I played online was much much more skilled than I was and crushed me without me actually learning anything.

Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on May 30, 2017, 08:45:45 AM
Yeah, Athens is pretty tough to play. I have no idea about the real balance of the game, but one thing I have found curious is no one has just proposed changing the initial point totals to improve balance. I'd play a game with you, but can't start til this weekend. I'm heading out to the field again tomorrow morning.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on May 30, 2017, 09:15:42 AM
This weekend works for me for starting.

Based on my very limited impressions, I'm not sure it's a balance issue per se. I think experienced Sparta v. experienced Athens is supposed to be fairly balanced. It's inexperienced Sparta v. inexperienced Athens where Athens is at a decided disadvantage. That being said, the simple adjustment you suggest would be a very simple "beginner" variant.

It didn't help that I got used to the interface at BoardgameCore where you can choose an action, see how it changes the board, and then undo it. I can't seem to undo anything unless you can't actually do the move. It's made me commit to a couple of moves I wasn't sure I really wanted to do.

But my planning things out so I can have the right resources (including prestige) at the right time. Even when I think I have a good plan going, then you do something that I feel I have to react to...and that throws everything off.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on June 04, 2017, 07:07:34 PM
Yeah, certainly all in on some things. I still don't know how to slow you down though. I have a feeling I'm going to get steamrolled in the last two rounds. Been trying to just kind of ooze 'lightly' onto the map and hold it while not allowing you a land battle, but I think screwed up missing a project in the last round by just spending too much prestige to move. This sea battle seems important!

I've also burned like 10-15 resources playing after you passed. That's probably not a good idea. :)

Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on June 05, 2017, 09:12:32 AM
And that's probably that. :)

I got a bit lucky with a good card draw in the naval battle, I think. If I lose a galley there, my Hoplites are stuck in Sicily. We'll see if I can capitalize on the momentum.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on June 05, 2017, 09:14:43 AM
Yeah, I overextended and needed that battle. Once Sparta is rolling, there's basically no stopping them. Really needed you at 0-1 prestige after the battle. (or low on galleys) -- There's a lot of things I could have done better though, even if my armies seem to be equipped with nerf weaponry.

How much does it cost to build into a town?
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on June 08, 2017, 09:44:28 AM
$1 + # of tracks into the town. I believe it costs $3 to upgrade an existing town tile.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on June 08, 2017, 09:49:46 AM
You sure it isn't $2 + # of track sides? $1 base seems cheap.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on June 08, 2017, 10:06:34 AM
Quote
Placing a Track tile in a Town costs $1 for the Town and $1 for every track to the Town. The least expensive Town tile is the Dedicated Town tile with one exit, which costs $2. The most expensive Town tile would be a Complex track with a Town disk placed on it. This would cost $5.

Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on June 08, 2017, 05:05:08 PM
We'd talked a bit about 18XX through Board18 + Spreadsheet (Which I think would work better than rails). But it might require learning new rules for you if all you've played is the partial game of 1830 we played earlier this year.

I've never played Through the Ages. I'd give it a go if that's what others wanted.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on June 08, 2017, 05:09:16 PM
I don't consider 18XX really learning new rules, so I'd be okay with that. My only hesitance with 18XX is the pace of the stock round.

I think our problem was with that other guy only checking in once every few days. The pace we generally play with, I don't think it would be too bad.

I think I pissed away victory in Polis, Woodall. I was worried about not being able to get to Sicily before you cut it off and then worked too hard to prevent them back off the Island. That, and I keep forgetting that 7 units will initiate a battle this round and thus keep giving you opportunities to pad your Prestige.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game

Yeah, I was thinking that I might have a chance to bring that other galley in on the next turn and then hope for some luck in the battle.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on June 09, 2017, 10:30:53 PM
I don't know that you really needed to go to Sicily. Might have been better to just stay mainland and slam my armies around a bit. Siege a couple of my Polis (Polii?) and call it a day. You had more resources than me so there was no danger for me to pass and slow you down. All in all, I think we both played pretty poorly. But I learned a few things and enjoyed it! I'd be up for another game with you and/or Mike.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game

Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on June 10, 2017, 09:19:19 AM
Yellow from Black-4 to Black-E for 5 (+4 form me; +1 for Mike).

Back to Woodall.

I think Woodall's 8 shares are probably going to give him the game.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on June 10, 2017, 09:30:46 AM
I've probably got it by a couple points, depending on track. I didn't miss too many build chances though, so must be fairly even.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: egg_salad on June 10, 2017, 10:16:16 AM
My last 4 move.. l'amour is up.  Best I see for him is a 3/1 split, giving 1 to either of you two, or a straight 2.  Seems like a touchy decision.

I'm pretty sure I'm in third, although not too far behind you two.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on June 10, 2017, 10:21:58 AM
I don't think it matters unless Rex has 3 more track pieces than me on the board. Ah, didn't realize income was 3 -- maybe it does matter!
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: Woodall on June 10, 2017, 10:28:56 AM
I'm 1 up on track vs. Rex, by my count.

So it seems in 2 of the 3 cases, I win - and in the other case, Rex wins. But really, I think we all win just by being friends.  :dreamer:
Title: Re: Age of Steam game
Post by: rstites25 on June 10, 2017, 10:53:29 AM
Scores 3 x (Income - Shares) + RR Sections

Before l'amour's move:

Rex:  3 x (31 - 10) + 21 = 84
Woodall:  3 x (29 - 8) +  22 =85
Mike:  3 x (29 - 10) + 22 = 79

So lamour's choice is give me 1 (Playing Kingmaker for me), giving Woodall 1 (keeping the status quo for 1st place), or giving nothing to us (keeping the status quo for first place).

Or I guess he could move the Purple cube from Black-5 to "F" for +2 to Mike and +2 for Himself, which, I think would play Kingmaker to Mike.

2 out of the 4 options are the status quo before his turn, so I'd assume that he'd do one of those, which gives the game to Woodall.
Title: Re: Age of Steam game

Id deliver for 1 or at least 3. Delivering for two puts me back where I was at the beginnib of the turn. I don't mind who wins, but best for me is to probably go 1 shy of the -4 space.

Brown/Yellow hexes start with a number of goods equal to the white cubes shown on the hex. They never grow/add more cubes.

It costs $6 to build a sea route, the claiming player "owns" just like a RR link. Scotland/England are dual color:  cubes of either color can be delivered there.

No "urbanization" and in it's place "de-urbanization," which allows you to remove a cube from the map.

Locomotive does not directly improve your locomotive; instead, you're allowed to use both turns in the "move goods" segment to improve your locomotive.

France:

Setup:  Each City gets 2 goods at start except Paris (8), Lyon (3), and Nice (1).

Terrain:  Hill hexes are "difficult" terrain and cost $2 to build in. A Hill hex with a small black hexagon is "very difficult" and costs $4 to build in. (It looks like on the VASSAL map, it's the terrain that has a round, mountain looking terrain).

Engineer:  You can only build/replace track in difficult terrain if you select Engineer.

Production:  Can either do the normal production or declare a city and randomly draw ONE goods cube and place it directly on the declared city.

Urbanization: If you choose urbanization, you can only place/replace TWO sections of track. During the first turn (only), two players can select Urbanization.

Paris:  Is a four-color city:  Blue, Rec, Yellow and Purple. It accepts goods of any of those colors AND blocks cubes of those colors from moving through it.

Goods Growth:  Paris is cities 1-6 on the Goods display.

Pay Expenses:  If because of expenses your income is reduced below zero, it simply goes to zero instead of forcing you to be bankrupt.

China:

Russia produces goods, but you can't ship there.

Start the game with $20 and 2 shares ($10 extra from your "personal fortune)

RRs must start in Hanoi, Hong Kong, Shangai, Tsin Tao, Wei Hai Wei, or Port Arthur.

When a RR connects to a city an extra amount of $ = to the number printed on the city must be paid to the bank (e.g., Peking costs an extra $6.) It costs nothing to build from a city that you're already connected to.

Each RR must be contiguous to a coastal city.

You can start track from a different coastal city (from that listed above), but in such a case, if it doesn't connect to your existing track, you have to pay the additional build cost.

Nothing extra to connect to a New City

Engineer:  Have option of normal 4-hex build OR applying "Diplomatic Pressure," which allows the player to connect to one city for half the normal cost (rounded up).

Urbanization:  Purple New City is removed, so Peking ends up being the only Purple city possible. (Any purple cubes placed on Peking or its place on the Goods Display during setup is removed and replaced)

Goods Growth:  Russia always gets 1 randomly drawn cube

We can play some other map available on VASSAL, if you can find the rules online for it (which may be somewhat of a chore given it's Winsome.)

It seems like Ireland is the consensus. I'll start a new thread momentarily.
