1] I have not played this series for a while.  How challenging has it become since the first three (CMBO; CMBB; CMAK)?

2] Does it still include a random battle generator?

yes has random battles....

Quick Battle system sets up deliberate or randomized battles based on player specifications

as for difficulty, that is probably subjective based on each person.  for me, i have never found the computer easy but i realize i am not as good at these games as other people.

The demos are the best way for you to tell. There are enough of them where you can play a LOT of CM before you've exhausted all of the free demos.

From the old games there is a user interface learning curve that is easy for some people and hard for others. But I played a lot of those first 3 games recently and, for me, the interface is far better (even if more complicated) and I found myself missing a lot of the newer stuff while playing the old stuff.....If that makes sense....

Why? Some guys in Brazilian shoulder patches? Will there be any major (or even minor) changes to the core game? Any new terrain types? Maybe a fix for the water elevation bug?

I agree with MD, if there's not earth shattering additions to the core game what's the point ?  Modders can put Brazo shoulder patches on unis.

I was hoping for new scenarios, not actually sure if this module adds any or not  NVM I read it more closely now, there are in fact new campaigns, scenarios, and maps in addition to the new TOEs and units.  I mean it's a small expansion for an Italian front WWII game, what do you expect in terms of groundbreaking?

I think the new game engine is more challenging but in a good way. There is more detail so you can see more of what is going on. This leads to a better (clearer) perception of casulties by the player. If you make a mistake (or the TacAI does) you will pay more dearly for it. Or at least see what you lost.

2] Does it still include a random battle generator?
Some one answered that there was a random battle generator. I just want to expand on that a bit. There is no random map generator. The current CMFI game ships with around 401 QB maps (I might have a few additional ones on my machine where I got that count from) that you can have the QB battle generator choose from. There are some duplicate in the maps - meaning that the same terrain might be used in an assault and a meeting engagement but the objectives and the AI will play differently even if the terrain is the same between two maps. For example there are 118 different Assault maps in my QB folder. The force selection can be randomly picked. It's not perfect but much better than when CMBN came out.

Isn't this the engine 4.x update for CMFI? And CMFI is the last game that isn't updated to 4.x yet.

Maps are all pre-made though. Just randomly selected from a pool of pre-made maps.

The maps in CMFI - actually all the CM2 titles - were really interesting and well done with good attention to detail. I'm still impressed at just how many high quality maps are offered on the release discs. Yes, they are pulled from the pool, but there are so many I think you could play indefinitely on them and not get bored. ASL players are still using the original dozen paper maps, for example, in their scenarios. Coupled with a full-blown editor that permits you to make your own, there's lots to like about the maps even without random generation (which I would still love to see).

But I'm still serious when I ask what the update will have that other CMs don't already have - each title seemed to reintroduce some of the little things that were lost since the conversion to the second gen engine. We finally have flame weapons back in, ever since I think CM:RT with backwards ports to the other titles. I'd really love to see the water elevation bug squashed.

If I don't have this game at all but have other titles I still have to purchase the base game from Battlefront for $60.00 ?

If your asking that to use/purchase the Rome module, do you need the base Fortress Italy game, the answer is YES.  Rome is an addon module to the base game.  They do offer some bundles at a little cheaper price.

I should buy the Fortress game and then these are add one?  This is one reason I stopped buying from them.   Too complicate for purchasing items.  They ever have a sale?

I have the Normandy and Soviet Eastern Front game.

Sorry, what is so complicated and how is it different than buying from another company that has add-on modules?  It's just like buying a base game at matrix/steam and then buying DLC for it.  You need to buy the base game and then you can buy the add-on modules.  For example, Matrix War in the East and War in the West are similar games, yet they have separate base game purchases and separate DLC.

However, when you install the base game, it actually is an "all-in-one-installer" where all the available modules/add-ons are included, you just need to activate them with your purchased license code.  So one simple install for all modules (even if you don't purchase them right away) and your set.

As also mentioned, you can buy a bundled version if you want to own all the modules at once plus the base game for a discounted price.  You can get the (2) available (or soon to be) modules and the base game for $95.  If you were to purchase them all separate, it would cost you $135 so you are saving $40 by doing that.  Battlefront never has sales so that is the best you can hope for now.

Not complicated at all.

Yep, you will have to buy the base game and DLC.  If you buy them at once, you will get a discount, but they never go on sale.  And they are worth every penny.  :)

You make it sound so simple. If they used DRM as uncomplicated as Steam or even Matrix/Slitherine Iíd be their biggest fanboy.

It is simple at least for me, not everyone has issues with the DRM (no I don't like the concept, but have no issues installing and activating).....although I know some others have.  I can only use my own personal experience and ever since the single-install file introduced, you only need the single file so you don't have to worry about making sure you have certain files or patch installer orders.

Call me crazy, but I'll pick a map carefully designed by a human over an algorithm pumped out by a computer 10 times out of 10.

True, but the map generator also allowed you to edit it once generated.  It was a nice short cut to a custom made map.  When you make a map now, you start from a flat grass square.

And I'll take 1000 computer generated maps to play on over time than say receycling 10 hand-designed ones....

One possible issue with the hand-made maps - that I haven't observed, but speaking in general - is you can start building your maps to accommodate the scenario rather than simply give a realistic patch of land. In the days of hex-based boardgames, this was part and parcel of game design, and those Squad Leader maps look nothing like any real terrain. They're wargame maps, to facilitate the various rules of the game. You have a bit of that in CM, obviously, with the 8m grid and 'action spots'. But I've certainly had the temptation in my own map design, despite using 'factual' sources, to relocate a building or shave down the slope of a hill in order to facilitate how the units interact.

I thought the random map generator was very good, come to that, with some limitations - and if designing a historical scenario would always use it as a starting point, not an end point. I think a lot of designers would love to have the ability to generate something similar in CMX2 as a start point, rather than a plain wafer of grass at 20 metre elevation.

Seems to me no-one really talks about this and tbh I do not believe I'm the only person that's experienced it...the very, very annoying "You can't suppress that machine gun unit in the second floor of that building because you can't see the base of the building".

Proper game killer for me in certain scenarios.

Yeah, that experience does suck. A lot has been written about it and there are some things you can do. It's not perfect but check out my FAQ - see the section "Targeting Buildings"http://community.battlefront.com/topic/125783-the-cm2-faq-thread/

How about 1,000 computer generated maps over recycling 829 hand-designed one? :-)

829 is how many QB maps are in my CMBN QB Map folder and I haven't downloaded any player made maps.

For real.  There's nothing wrong with "when it's done" or "late 2019."  At this point they're clearly just continually rolling back the "estimate" as the months roll along.  Wouldn't be nearly as annoying if they had some degree of transparency ("hey guys, sorry but the new module is being pushed back because we're working on XYZ, but here's a screenshot or an AAR to hold you over") rather than just slyly updating the store page and letting people figure it out.

Not trying to start an anti-Battlefront rant here so please consider that but,... after long and hard effort I've FINALLY got my CM games up and running on Game Engine 4 and I really fear taking a chance on screwing them up by anything new right now. So, I'm majorly holding-off on everything for now. My 2 cents.

Actually, that is exactly what we've been doing the last few months. So, I agree with you completely. :-) I can add some links here if you'd like. Both Steve and myself have posted what has been dragging it out (mostly a bear of a TO&E). And we started a Beta AAR. And I've been dropping a coupla/few screenshots a week.

And, for what it's worth, if you had offered to bet me 2 weeks ago if it would be out in September I would have taken the bet that it would be.

On the subject of the TO&E, I was rewriting the release message for the web site today for when the announcement is made (usually announced a day or 2 after release) and I was looking at the pre-order announcement....shaking my head as I looked at the phrase "....adds nearly 100 new formations and over 50 new vehicles.....". Makes my brain hurt thinking of 100 formations......

For me it doesn't have anything to do with whether you provide updates or not, certainly appreciate them but more of the point is the fact the company hasn't remotely hit their planned release dates for a very long time.  Publishing any date (even month) is kind of pointless since in most cases your not missing by days or weeks, you missing by months.  There is always some reason it gets missed and it really doesn't even matter the reason.

As for your bet two weeks ago that it would be released in September, equally I would have bet against it...looks like I would have won:)  Are you equally now betting on October?  I guess we'll see in the next 29 days.

Don't get me wrong, actually doesn't matter much to me anymore since not a day one purchase anyway (at least I think) but just hate seeing the same cycle happen over and over again.

Sure. Should we bet something silly like the winner gets to chose an avatar that the other has to use for a month?

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see an announcement for the October delay, which is what I'm talking about -- aside from the store page being updated on Oct. 1st to say "expected in October."

As always Elvis, I appreciate your responses.

I feel the bite on my wallet tempting me to go ahead on RTV from reading the Kirpan the Rhino AAR very well done and keeps you wanting for more.

Not trying to start an anti-Battlefront rant here so please consider that but,... after long and hard effort I've FINALLY got my CM games up and running on Game Engine 4 and I really fear taking a chance on screwing them up by anything new right now. So, I'm majorly holding-off on everything for now. My 2 cents.

You can check out my exchange with Elvis in the other thread. It probably covers a majority of all ways to screw up a CMx2 build :D

In all seriousness, what I learned as the key element for survival is that, although not really announced, BFC updates the distribution files to include everything (even stuff you don't own, that is managed by license key) and you can download them. The files change in your account. Afterward you can just go nuke your install (keep mods and custom files) and easily start over.

I don't think either are particularly good discussions:)

For me, it missed my purchase window....too many other games I was able to buy on their expected release dates while waiting for this and several more to come before end of year.  So the date no longer worries me, not a day one purchase anymore and likely won't be until 2020 (if at all), assuming it is released by then....only half joking since only two months left in 2019.

Understood, Reap. The good news is that the module is non-perishable and has no expiration date. So, it will be there if you ever decide that you'd like it.

If it wasn't a holiday weekend it would have probably been out tomorrow or Friday. There is one piece needed before release. Once it's out I'll explain more what I mean by that. Heck, when I woke this morning I thought I was waking up to ship it out today. The original conversation was whether it was going to be yesterday or today but a longer term benefit thing that doesn't really have anything to do with the module's content was brought up and it was decided to wait until it was available...which would only add a day or two....except that day or 2 happened to fall on a holiday weekend.

Or just provide a direct simple response to the potential customer which would have taken you the same amount of time to type as your response......you have to admit this release has been far from clear and accurate to date so hard to blame anyone for not knowing how things will happen.

Really not trying to be difficult at all (actually like the games themselves), but not sure why everything around these games seem so hard......

I was making a joke. Being intentionally cheeky. I used to tell my staff in my old job that if I ever say "am I right or am I wrong?" always answer "yes".

For what it's worth...any straight up announcement for a specific release date will be made on the Battlefront forum first (obviously). But I will say this. Pre-orders will be shipped for, at least, a coupla/few hours before any public statement will be made. This is done for 2 reasons...First, it gives the pre-order people access to download with the least amount of server traffic. And, secondly, if something catastrophic happens with the upload, links and all of the other bits that are involved with a release, there is a chance to fix it before opening the doors for new orders.

Really?  So all your last few comments have been a joke so really no shot at this weekend (I am sure you'll just say your answer was vague and not any kind of real answer anyway)?  If that is the case, not sure how that is really funny under the circumstances and why was needed.

Just shaking my head around the continued failure around this release and now has just become a joke.....sigh.

You're right. Saying nothing should be the preferred method over trying to be lighthearted. They both deliver the same amount of information that is ready to be released. One offends and the other doesn't. (or maybe the silence offends as well.....tough to say)

How are those equal?  Intentionally delivering vague/misleading/lighthearted information is not the same as either delivering information that simply says "date unknown" (which most people think anyway since 3-4 months late with it being close many times) or not saying anything (which doesn't lead to wrong/misleading information)....

At this moment based on all this crazy communication, I am still not sure if there really is any chance for this weekend (since it contradicts your post in the battlefront forums) or whether the date is truly unknown.

I have to chime in here because Elvis's comments are a HUGE red flag for me.

I'm a potential customer and I've been looking at jumping into this series (CMFI), however, I'm a little worried at the comments that Elvis has made on this thread. I get being "funny" on a forum but if you represent Battlefront and you're trying to be cheeky to customers (or potential one's like me) don't. It's not funny. Not in the slightest.

I know that if I need tips/tricks at the like there is the Battlefront forums and while there are some really douchy, elitist snobs there with a tactical genius like 2x4's lodged up their asses, there are even more kind people who take the time to help out noobs like myself. However, if I need customer service, then I have to rely on the BF people and if this is the kind of attitude they have, no thanks.

Just my .02c, and while I'm here can the people who own the game chime on on their customer service experience? What little I've read, it's so-so.

Even with the poor customer communication and late release dates, I have never had an issue with actually getting any official support issues or questions resolved.  No complaints there.  Also enjoy the games and own every one of them, but does get tiring the effort one has to go through sometimes (and I am not even going to go down the road of the crazy DRM---I have accepted it and I still buy regardless).

OMG are you guys for real?
BFC has a solid policy of releasing product when it is ready. They don't give solid dates they never have. Whenever they give an approximate date they always favour quality over hitting some arbitrary date.
Customers should be happy with that. We should be cheering BFC for their high standards. Sure this release has been delayed more than usual but come on, don't we all have some other war game to play? Likely something else from BFC.
Or heck there is always the very groggy GTA that you can fire up.

Regardless, read the the thread more....the delayed release was not the main issue (as Elvis would put it, became a monthly joke/lighthearted discussion), as usual the communication was more the topic.

So to recap...

1. There is frustration and confusion over long delays and the status of the release
2. Instead of providing concise information in response to clear inquiries, Elvis made an inside joke that had no meaning to anybody who is interested and paying attention
3. This created further frustration and confusion
4. There is still no information beyond what was already known before this all started and nobody is playing the module because it still hasnít been released
5. BFG customer support is otherwise very good.

Letís move on.

It's at a point where it is ok to mention what I alluded to here, as it will come into play for a lot of people who purchase the module (pre-order or otherwise). This release will look more like the recent Pack releases than previous module releases. If you purchase any module right now (for any of the games) there is no download link. The same will be true for Rome to Victory. There will be a "patch" that will be released and that will contain all of the Rome to Victory content. From there you just use the Activate New Products utility and enter the module key(s). All of the full game installers will already have the module content built in. The "one piece needed" part I referred to was that we had originally thought to send all pre-orders the full installer and break the "patch" out after the holidays. It was then decided to not release until the "patch" was also ready. That's why it didn't go out Wednesday morning. So, as with CMBN, if you have the game patched up to date and you purchase a module you just need to activate it to get the content.

So this year's announcements are something like this

(Incidentally, I keep track on my site at http://tacticalwargamer.com/computergames/combatmission/combatmission.htm )

CMSF 2 got a new patch in January

Game Engine 4 patch was released in May

Rome to Victory announced in June

Rome to Victory released in November

No judgement on my part as to whether this is a successful year or not. Rome to Victory seems like a modest addition, but it is modestly priced as well. But also seems like the biggest thing to come from BFC this year. Seems odd they wouldn't revisit the Eastern Front first, but perhaps gaming tastes are changing. I recall Steve saying that CMBB was not the huge seller they thought it would be. Possibly CMRT didn't either. But it always did seem odd to set a game on the Eastern Front but not include Stalingrad, Berlin or Kursk in the timeframe.

Incidentally, what is the timeframe for this new module? I presume it goes to May 1945? Which IIRC is a first for the CMX2 games?

I took the plunge - for $35, no reason not to.

I got no documentation on how to download. I also have no download link in my email or in my Account section of the website.

I went to my root folder on my hard drive and ran the Activate New Products utility, and it reported that Rome to Victory was now active.

But nothing has downloaded, and when I go to the game, nothing has changed.

I am running Game Engine 4, V2.02

What do I do now?

And the icing on the cake, filling out the form fields to create a ticket on the support site, if your version number isn't a simple number (I added "Game Engine 4" to be complete) it just crashes the entire form and makes you fill everything out again.

there is no download link.

From their site it states that the new modules are part of the code that you've already downloaded so nothing to download for the new module.  You just have to activate and go.

Ok, thanks. I wonder how I would have known that if I didn't read this forum?

Anyway, took some doing, but it is now working. I appreciate the help. I better close my ticket.

Michael, you should always go to your account on BFC and download the distfiles linked in your previous orders menus.

The downloads behind that get updated behind the scenes without notice. They are always all-at-once installers, so the way to go for installations. No patches.

You sure about that?
I ask because i just ran into my first issue with patching. I was a patch behind for CMBN and CMRT, so i had to update from 4.01 and 2.01 respectively to the .02 versions. CMBN patched just fine, CMRT only shows black screen after patch, no menu, but i can hear the music. i sent in a support ticket.

I check my install file from my orders and its date from 2015 for the created date, doesn't the created date get updated when the files change? i'd much rather download a patch then the 6 gig installer every time though.

I don't know what you mean. I went to my account on BFC to order the module. There was nothing to download. I had to go to the link mentioned on the forum in order to get the V2.10 patch/module. If I hadn't read this forum, telling me to read that forum, I would have had no idea. First world problems to be sure.

Log in and go to 'My Account'.
Then go to the 'My orders' page.
Click on the 'click to view' next to the order.

No. Modules, downloads and code have nothing to do with each other anymore.

Is there a link in the base game order.  This download will probably contain the module that you just have to activate (might also need to enter the key for the base game after installation).

This is the case for Black Sea but here it is mentioned that you don't need a download :

CMBS Battle Pack 1
CMBS-P1V4
There is no download for this product

I had to buy the Rome to Victory module to get a serial key, which I then
activated in CMFI.  So now I have the entire package.  Helps to already
have the Gustav Line module installed and patched to 2.10

I did have GL installed.

But, I was only at V2.02

Anyway, the postings here got me to the right page, so I cancelled my support ticket.

Incidentally, what is the timeframe for this new module? I presume it goes to May 1945? Which IIRC is a first for the CMX2 games?
The time frame for the new Fire and Rubble module is to indeed to go to the end of the war. However Frotress Italy Rome to Victory is the first to get to the end of the war for the CM2 games.

I am glad you are up and running.

BFC a while back changed their philosophy and their build process. While previously you had to install bits and pieces and activate each one now everyone who is patched to the latest version has all the bits and pieces and you activate the modules and packs you bought. On you HD you have everything. This allows you to play some of the new content against people who do not yet own that content. Which is kinda cool for use PBEM players.
Clearly the documentation did not spell that out well. It also sounds like there was two emails sent that only combined could you get the full picture.
At any rate the thing to remember is to patch up to the latest version and activate the new key - then you will be good to go.

There was no documentation. The two emails I got didn't say a word about it. I had to come here to figure it out, and find the link. Software guys make the worst documentarians - which is why technical writers are a thing. :-)

FWIW, this is not the only place where the information could be found. Before the pre-order notification emails went out, the purchase page for R2V changed to reflect that v2.10 was required for R2V. It also says that there is no download for the product. The patches page was changed to include the 2.10 patch long before the pre-order notifications went out (I probably did that at 7am Friday and the pre-orders started going out around 2:30pm). And I made the post that you were given on this forum to the Battlefront forum about 6pm Friday. It wasn't until sometime Saturday that the homepage was updated to announce the module release. All of this piece by piece release is done to mitigate issues that have occured with past releases. And some of the thought process is that if someone who didn't pre-order is finding out the module is released they are finding it out (for the most part) from Battlefront forum posts....which is also where the post you were linked to is. I've been giving some additional thought to this to improve on it more. One thought is to announce/discuss it at great length long before a module/Pack release so the anyone following along that isn't familiar with the process will expect it and be ready for it before it's released.

I didn't pre-order and I don't read the BFC forum. I heard that the module was out, so I went to the game page on the BFC site, clicked, and ordered. I got an order confirmation by email, and a shipping confirmation. The order with activation key also showed up in my account page on the BFC site. There was no indication of what I needed to do to get the program running.

Regardless of how extensively it was discussed, it wouldn't have mattered in the case of anyone like me who isn't following the discussions.

If that's the way you want to do it, I would suggest a link to that discussion in the shipping confirmation. I understand that is an automated process, but it would just be a short addition. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall there being very little actual benefit to pre-ordering BFC stuff anyway. The price is the same, and there is no appreciable delay between general release and pre-orders. The one advantage I can think of is you can order and forget about it, and as soon as it is ready, you get your notification that you can go ahead and install it.

That's not a criticism, it's actually easier to control my spending if I have to wait until release, and then assess whether I really need it or can prioritize it then, as opposed to being surprised six months after I preorder by a hit on my credit card, which has happened for example with ASL stuff I forgot I ordered.

I don't disagree with this but the emails generated by the system are not product specific. So, there is no way add instructions to emails for individual products. The same confirmation email is sent if you ordered R2V or the CMRT base game. That said, previous emails that did not have download links do have the wording "there is no download for this purchase", as someone else mentioned seeing in an earlier order. This was my first rodeo so there may have been a box I didn't check off that would have added that line to the confirmation email.

RE:pre-orders. There is not the same advantage to them that there used to be, for sure. The only 2 that I can think of are, as you mentioned, you kinda "set it and forget". When it's out you'll get the notification and get a few hour jump on getting it. My Eagles season tickets are a little similar....They are completely paid for in June so when football season rolls around all I have to do is go to the games and leave crying. The other advantage, at least in this case, is that unlike the confirmation emails generated by the store, the pre-order notification emails are specific to the title. They contained links, detailed installation and activation instructions.

For what it's worth, I have added a download link to the back end for purchases of R2V and the R2V/Gustav Line bundle. I will likely remove it after a month or 2.

(Edit to add....Anyone who already purchased the module should also see the download link now in their account...not that they need it now...but it should be there)

Ya, but that was the Giants they were playing.  I don't know if I'd call that showing up against the 2 and 10 Giants.  They just finally started doing their jobs in the second half and kept from getting embarrassed by a 2n10 team.  Showing up will be winning out the rest of the season and making the playoffs.

Something came up the other day.......It appears that the installer for the CMFI 2.10 patch did not include all of the Master Maps. If someone used the full game installer then they have all of the maps.

The 4 missing maps are all pretty awesome Monte Cassino maps. Here is a direct link to the maps for anyone interested:

I should ask around about the history behind them because I really don't know it. He pointed out at the last minute that they weren't in, and I wasn't turning down any great looking content like them. They really are nice and a great starting point for anyone looking to make a battle around that area. But, they were never anything that I discussed with him prior. Chris may have at some point over the multi-year development time. They are time stamped over 5 years ago!  :wow: They are also not Rome to Victory dependent. So, it is that rare patch that also contains some content. In the back of my brain I can kinda almost recall another time when a patch had some content too. It was either some extra scenarios or QB maps or somefink.
