Title: Steam Monikers
Post by: Bison on October 29, 2012, 07:32:35 PM
We've had a nice influx of folks signing up with our Steam group recently. However I know many of you use a different moniker here from the one on Steam. Especially since we seem to be making some headway on getting a little bit more Groghead multiplayer games going through Steam this will help to know who you are playing with in game. Please help everyone know who you are and post your Steam moniker here. Thanks all.
Bison here, Bison there, Bison everywhere. ;D

LB, same there as here. I do go by other monikers on different forums, but it's likely that if you know me there you know it's me.

There are maybe a hundred of you on Steam. How about joining the GrogHeads Steam group? We'll have a better chance of finding you.
I already joined the steam group some time ago...

I have a general Steam question. Can you get an alert on a specific game if it goes on sale? How?
You can make a wishlist of games you want to track and check it occassionally. I'm not sure that Steam has an email notification method. At least I don't remember it having one.

Every few days Steam will pop an advert up with some offers in a half window.
Just now after exiting a game I saw two games for sale, one was Aliens: Colonial Marines. It wasn't on sale per se since it isn't out yet, but it has a pre-order phat loot of some kind of special weapon.
You can also hit their store and they'll typically let you know if something is discounted.

Easiest thing to do is just hit the store page and check the See All Specials page over on the right hand side.
This is the one thing I don't like about STEAM. In Gamersgate I can set any game to alert me via email when it goes on sale. From a consumer point of view that feature is awesome. From a vendor point of view it is not because it encourages people to wait for sales on tracked items. STEAM would rather suck your money out of your pocket at full price because you can't auto track game sales. They are not counting on the customer to be intelligent enough to patiently wait and monitor STEAM manually on any given game.

^ That is more what I was hoping they had for Steam. Guess I'll just have to check it more often.

I do agree that some sort of notice when something on your wishlist is marked down would be nice. But if the customer doesn't want to wait, that's 100% on the customer.

I think using sales tracking sites like below makes it much easier to notice sales across most major download vendors

About 68 games or so - I tend to buy 'em cheap unless they're Civ V games. I have all the Civ V iterations including BNW thus far. Also got the new XCom game last year but only played it once or twice - after paying full price for it (duh). I'll have to recheck when I get home. My poor desktop is long in the tooth (six years now), but still chugging along and running things relatively smoothly.

@ Pissy-Kitty you could load XCOMM on a six yo comp?
Title: Re: Steam Monikers
Post by: BanzaiCat on July 31, 2013, 02:08:06 PM
Yep, it runs fine. My original graphics card died a couple of years ago, so I plugged a new one in there (can't recall the name of it offhand, it was sent to me for free from one of the publishers I work with) and it worked fine. Never had any issues with any games thus far.
Although, it will run slow on larger Civ V maps in later stages of the game. Sometimes it doesn't like to wake up after being put to sleep, either. (Who doesn't, really.) Until it dies permadeath style, I'm not willing to shell out a couple of grand for a new gaming rig. Maybe this time next year I'll have one, but I think my wife's already spent the bonus money I'm getting from my new job. Priorities, don'cha know.

I have that prob with the wife too (actually we are living happily in sin). I have a part time gig/hobby finding fossils and ammonites. When I get the occassional bonanza, she has plans to spend it before the cash gets in my wallet.
I started this about 2-3 years ago and I am yet to be able to buy a cordless 6 1/2 inch saw with a diamond blade for trimming the fossil plates down
Thanks! I'll check tonight. I'm always logged in but last night I put in yet another Civ V BNW bender and didn't pay much attention to anything else.
ditto here.... the evil triad of ottomans, greeks (go figure that alliance) and danes made there move just before i did the manhattan project.... my subs trashed their invasion fleets.... japan sat it out and closed up 80 points..... but I stole a few city states from the greeks.... marginal victory for me

Submarines are just SO wonderful in Civ V. It's almost unbalancing when it comes to the AI, which hardly ever builds destroyers (at least, not that I've come across).
