Title: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: Yskonyn on February 21, 2013, 04:40:14 AM
Last update: Apr 15th 2013

Delay: None

Host:PBEM Llamaserver.  (The Big Pretenders (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=The_Big_Pretenders2))
Age: EA
Map:Battlefields Battlefields.map (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/nudb5ya32ya3dzw/lN2MXXuq1c/Battlefields.map)Battlefields.rgb (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/nudb5ya32ya3dzw/X9bjHESoAr/Battlefields.rgb)
How Often on Turns: 24 hours quickhost to turn 20 (or requests), 48 hours from there, slow to 72 hours late game if necessary.
Number of Players: 5
Mods:  CBM 1.94 mod (http://z7.invisionfree.com/Dom3mods/index.php?showtopic=998) (if we agree) and I personally use the Streamers and Standards Mod (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=39989) (llamabeast version), Upgraded Sprites Mod (http://z7.invisionfree.com/Dom3mods/index.php?showtopic=707)  and the Community Sprites Mod (http://z7.invisionfree.com/Dom3mods/index.php?showtopic=80).
You can download my modfolder from here: Mods Folder (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jyb7d6lrf2qzuw0/IjGxJEdP-b)

Non-Standard Settings: Special Site freq. 45%, Hall of Fame entries 15, Renaming is allowed, No graphs, Independents 7
Victory Conditions: Last one standing
Diplomacy Policy: None; do as you wish, keeping in mind consequences in future games, as well as later in that game (if you stab someone early, any alliance later in that game is likely to prove less trustworthy). Trades should be fulfilled
Cheesy Tricks: New players won't know them and won't be ready for them. This is things like sending 50 bad items to someone right as they put up forge of the ancients to make them waste gems; using scouts to constantly siege someone's fortress; and there are probably a few others I historically read about but have since forgotten.

NATIONS (5/5)
My race: Caelum. (and no, I don't mind losing)
Huw: Ermor
undercovergeek: Niefelheim
Ubercat: Mictlan
JasonPratt:Arcosephale

Note: Please mind that this is supposed to be a newbie friendly game, so leave the stronger nations for the newbies and be so kind as to choose a weaker nation if you have enough experience with Dom 3. We should all be able to learn from eachother.

Note2: The hosting time limits are slightly indicative, but we are pressed to make them whenever possible. In other words; if you can't make the turn limit, be sure to post in this thread to let me know in advance so I can extend the time in the llamaserver.
Better yet is sending me an email, which you have gotten in a PM.
I have an irregular working schedule with stops abroad sometimes, so I might put in the odd request for a few more hours/days as well. I hope we can all be flexible about this. If not, then please say so up front.

Note3: (By Lung Drago) As this is a newbie game I optimistically do not expect to meet problems regarding using of exploits that I stumbled upon reading on these forums. But just for the record, I dislike such behavior. Stay fair, people. If you cannot swallow a defeat, then you will be a newbie forever. In spirit of my previous sentence, please do not go AI after a single major battle lost
I will keep this fist post updated with status changes and info as it comes through.

Note4: Remember to keep an eye on the turn interval. I will update changes in interval in this thread.
Be sure to report EARLY if you will not be able to send in a turn in time.
WE CANNOT USE THE ROLLBACK FEATURE! Due to possible savegame corruption.

(Thanks to 3V4JKZ2 for the above format  )

Note 5:
If we do go vanilla I recommend to go for Worthy Heroes (http://z7.invisionfree.com/Dom3mods/index.php?showtopic=122) too (included in CBM already) to make recruiting Hero's better balanced for all nations.

Note 6:
I want to put a very good project into the spotlight made by a player called momfreak.
Mod Inspector (http://dom3-mod-inspector.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/index.html?page=item&selectmods=1)

This webpage enables you to select some mods that you will be using for the game and then display accurate information about all the spells and items in the game.
You can also view the stock vanilla game data with this webpage.
Super handy as reference.

[/b]Note 7:[/b] When the game is setup you will all need to send your pretender to Llamaserver.
You can send your pretender file as an attachment to: (Put in the name of the game in the title, leave the body empty)

pretenders@llamaserver.net

You can find your pretender file in your Dominions 3\savegames\newlords folder.
it has a file format <era>_<nation>_0.2h

It will overwrite and old pretenders for the same era/nation.

After all the pretenders have been sent in the game can be kicked off and you will receive your turns in the mail.
Just send your turn back to turns@llamaserver.net (probably just reply to sender)

Only send in the .2h file. The .trn file is only sent by Llama to YOU.

I am definitely up for this, although I don't know the game at all yet so I hope you don't mind playing against an utter noob.  Would love to see more people join in too though!

I'm in. CBM and improved sprite mods sounds good. I suggest EA on the Cradle of Dominion map.

I call Mictlan!

I've not got terribly far on my learning curve yet.  I certainly have no experience with the CB Mod.  But I'd still like to jump in.

What 'Age' are we gonna play in?  Early?  Mid?  That kinda helps balance out the levels of magic and heavy armor/weapons, so I'd rather pick one than use a mod to jumble them all together.

Early or Mid is fine with me.
Uber suggested EA, so let's go with Early.

None of this makes any difference to me since I'm clueless anyway.  Whatever y'all go with will be fine with me.

Don't know.  Looks like you can host a game on the Llamaserver (http://llamaserver.net/) and Yskonyn says he can do that.

I love PBEM; we get to play with our transatlantic cousins and not have to worry about time zones! \o/

tempt me some more!

Well you could always read the manual (http://jaffa.illwinter.com/dom3/manual_dom3.pdf) while sat on the bog!  Anyway, I need a fellow Brit in there with me to fend off the imperialist menace from the USA!  Not that I know for sure that Yskonyn, Nefaro and Ubercat are American of course, but they must be because everyone on the internet is.  We must taunt them while we recruit stealth ninja armies to storm their awful disease-ridden provinces, and casty mighty spells of smiting!  And stuff.

There's always the feature list:

Quote
* Many monsters (1500+) and many many special abilities.
* Over 60 different nations to choose from, varying from Marignon with paladins, witch hunters and inquisitors to under water nations like the Lovecraft inspired R'lyeh.
* Three Eras to play in, Early era is most magic and the late era is more technologically advanced with good steel weapons and armors.
* Design your pretender god and how his dominion influences provinces and his sacred units.
* Multiplayer with simultaneous turns (up to 23 players).
* Network or Play by E-Mail for multiplayer.
* AI opponents for single- or multiplayer game.
* Random maps.
* An extensive magic system with over 600 spells.
* Blood magic, power your rituals with human sacrifices.
* Global ritual that affect the entire world.
* More than 300 magic items.
* Unique magic artifacts that all players compete for, once forged no one else can make it.
* Mercenaries are bought on a global market.
* Scouts, Assassins, Spies, Seducers, Corruptors, Werewolves, Illusionists and more can be sneaking in your provinces.
* Build Castles, Temples and Labs.
* Permanent battle afflictions.
* A 300 page pdf manual including a tutorial and a spell and magic item reference.
* Easy to Mod (2d graphics)
* Playable on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.

Title: Re: How are we progressing on Dom3, up for it yet?

Its quite marvellous actually, UG!
Llamaserver is a completely automaten system where one can make the game and the llama system will send turns to all players at the given interval.
The admin can change parameters like hosting interval on the fly. Usually we start with one turn every 24 hours, but this changes to longer intervals once we get further in the game.
I will only need your email address to which you want your turn sent.
Once played you mail your turn to llamaserver and it will update your nation on the player list so everyone can see who has sent in and who has not.
If the timelimit has been reached llama will send out the new turns regardless of all players being ready. Your nation will have a stale turn in that case.
So there is never waiting on slowpokes.

If a player wants to bail there are 2 options: turn the nation into an AI controlled nation or find a substitute player. The latter has preference.

Any more you would like to know? (But exact details will come once we have a sizable amount of players interested)

So that's five of us so far - is that enough to kick off or do we wait for more?  How does everyone feel about adding some AI opponents?  (Personally I'm fine with that)
Title: Re: How are we progressing on Dom3, up for it yet?
Post by: Yskonyn on March 02, 2013, 07:07:45 AM
Well the AI is just a filler.
I would go for upping the Independents' strength first, to be honest.
But 5 of us on a map like Cradle of Dominion is not enough.
With 8 players we could start.

With 5 we can as well, but we need to just go for a random map with a good size for us then.
Title: Re: How are we progressing on Dom3, up for it yet?
Post by: undercovergeek on March 02, 2013, 08:18:44 AM
the mods you suggest at the start - should that be 1, then 2 then 3 or choose just any one?
Title: Re: How are we progressing on Dom3, up for it yet?

I mean to have them all installed, but the order is not important. Just dont forget to enable them in Dom 3 from the main menu.

Shows for 29.99 for me.
Only the demo has the 'free' flag.
Title: Re: How are we progressing on Dom3, up for it yet?
Post by: Ubercat on March 02, 2013, 10:07:03 AM
I already have CBM installed. Aren't the other mods just graphics updates? Do all players have to have them all installed? I thought we could pick and choose, as it will only change the sprites on our own machines, or am I wrong?

I suggested Cradle of Dominion as it is very well balanced, not to mention gorgeous.

Sounds like I won't be the only noob getting a royal ass-beatin.  :)

I'll be even more confused if we use mods that change the game mechanics.  I'll be playing it by ear and having little clue.

A PBEM match would probably be the preferred way what with such varied time zones & schedules.  It sounds a bit daunting, however, considering all the emails and involved in even one turn.   This kind of thing could easily turn into one of those multi-year epic pbem games where some players die of old age or syphilis before it's finished.

The game itself will only require 2 Emails per turn, one turn file sent to the server and one received. Diplomatic Emails will be something else entirely. You can communicate in game, but your opponent won't receive your message until he gets his next turn.

I would propose to do diplomacy via email, not via the ingame msg system.
If we go ahead with us 5 then I am not sure if Cradle will work as a map. It might be too big. What do you think Ubercat?

Anyway please start by sending me your email addresses you want to use via a PM please.
Also state which nation you want if you havent done so.
I will update the first post with rules and info later this evening.

Yeah, Cradle isn't big enough if we only have 5 people. Would a small random map be big enough for so few? I'm several years out of practice, and I have to leave for work now so I can't test one.

I would propose to do diplomacy via email, not via the ingame msg system.

Why do you suggest that?  I would have thought the in-game system would be perfect, and also prevents the need for everyone to exchange email addresses.

I have CBM installed by the way, and will send you my email/nation choice shortly.  Thank you very much for hosting, mate.

Post by: Yskonyn on March 03, 2013, 11:02:21 AM
The in game system works ok, but I find it to be annoying sometimes that you get a vital piece of info, but only after the turn has already been played where it was vital for. ;)
Besides, the game does not store the messages. They are a one off thing and you need to remember what was written in them.
Email gets rid of these problems. But everyone is free to choose as they like. I prefer my diplo via email.

A thing on mods.
Llamaserver wants to know which mods are being played. I have no clue wether this means everyone NEEDS to have all the mods installed if they are merely graphical mods, but it might be that it is used for integrity checks to prevent cheating.

I am going to tell Llama that the hosted game has all the mods enabled as detailed in the first post. With the exception of CBM if you guys rather want to play without gameplay changes and try your hands at vanilla. Let me know.

I'll alter the first post into a common format that is often seen over at the Shrapnel boards for setting up MP games.

If we are going to do a 5 player game, do we want to have some AI nations in?
Do we at least want stronger Independents to limit our expansion at first?

A word on the time limit / turn interval regarding Llamaserver.
One thing I found confusing is that the 24 hours are NOT at a fixed time. If the game was hosted at 20:00 on day one, then Llamaserver will autohost at 20:00 the next day (with an interval of 24 hrs) regardless of all people having sent in their turns.
However, and this is the confusing part, Llamaserver will push out the new turn immediately after all players have sent in their turn.
This might be well within the 24 hour timeframe and so the next day Llamaserver hosts the game at 14:00 already.
If you then expect to have until 20:00 the next day, you will be too late. Keep this in mind.

So in short, you always have 24 hours from the point you received your turn in your email.

Gotcha - thanks for the warning Yskonyn.

Also, thank you very much for that great post at the top and for hosting the game.  I appreciate it and I'm psyched to get playing!!!  I've wanted this game forever.

With regard to cheesy tactics, you're right, as a noob I don't know any but even if I did I wouldn't use them.  I don't like playing games that way.

I'd like to do it, but with my job I can't ever commit to a 24 or 48 hour turn-around.

Anybody like to do a game with a 5 day turn-around and I can do it.

I could play either the hideously complex Tien Chien or the amazingly single strategy Abysia if we can do a maximum 5 day turnaround.

Gents, I have also added this to the first post for comfort, but I want to point out an indispensable website for Dom 3.

Mod Inspector (http://dom3-mod-inspector.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/index.html?page=item&selectmods=1)

You can select which mods you use and then display accurate information about the spells and items for that mod in the game.

Vanilla is also supported.

Do we all have to play with the same graphics Mods? I installed the Improved Graphics mod but can't make heads or tails of that Community Graphics mod.

I also have CBM installed. I've never played with it before, but it seems to balance the game better so I suggest that we use it. I will say, as an out of practice player of intermediate skill, that it tones down my faction of Mictlan by making my two best magic items unique; the Sanguine Dousing Rod and the Jade Knife. I'll have to do a lot more research to make them and then will only be able to craft one of each. The long term effect will be that my blood economy will take a bit longer to really get going.

As for the graphics mods I honestly don't know. I cannot think of any reason why all must have the fluff mods, but Llamaserver does want to know which ones are run. Let's just try.

Another option is to have me host my mods folder in my dropbox and you guys copy it so we all have the same install.
Up to you.

I've never hosted anything so I would be a very high risk to run this.

OK. I'll take another look, but I couldn't figure out how to install the Community Graphics Mod before. It looked like each player just picked and chose the parts of it he liked to install.

Ubercat, I think the mod indeed requires some editing to configure it. It has a few options for some sprites like the Heron/Phoenix for example.
I shall share my mods folder in my dropbox. Those who want to can copy it. Link will follow.

As for the slower game Airboy requested; its pretty simple to host so I will create a seperate thread for that game to see if maybe we can add more players there too.

Are we happy to start with the 5 of us on this one, Gents? Another option is to copy the first post over to the Dom3 community forum and I'll bet we will have 12+ players in no time.
But I think its more fun and cozy to keep it a Grognati affair for now?

I'm good to go - I'm sure as long as were on cbm 1.94 were all good - reading up today the graphics mods are just personal to your machine and shouldn't upset any balances if you don't want them

Certainly for this game I'd like grogs - maybe unleash airboys slower one on the great unwashed?

You guys should probably get started without me.

I haven't even messed with any mods yet, and haven't been in a hurry to mess with mod soup lately.

Also.. shouldn't there be some kind of file check in the game's multiplayer side (for cheating purposes)?  If so, I'd wonder if the checksums encompassed all the game files and therefore having different gfx mods would be included in such a check.  Something to worry about.

I'm working on the mod soup tonight; I've installed the game and it runs on Win8, so that part's okay. If I get it running by tomorrow I'll let y'all know, and volunteer for Nefaro's place.

Okay, so far so good: I'm patched up to version 3.28 (should be automatically there for new buyers I guess?--but I bought back with version 3's initial release), and the program's mod list indicates the four mods are installed.

(For those having trouble installing the mods, just unzip them, or unrar them I guess, into the game's mod folder directly. Incidentally, does anyone know of a reliable free .rar tool for Win8? Win8pro handles zip files fine already, but spat upon the .rar file. I'm currently burning a free Winzip17 evaluation, but when that's done I'll be looking for a .rar tool again.)

Amusement -- this game, when the battle graphics are turned on "too high" along with showing grass, will still bring my new Falcon NW maxed out MachV to a 8fps stutter! Turning off grass, "too high" is not a problem, almost 60fps. I'm running high with grass turned on and other things maxed out.  8)

Next up, Llamathinging. Updated to add: that... was singularly unhelpful... I'll just have to follow people's lead.

Next up, choosing an EA faction and preeing a pretender. :)

I don't know about Windows 8, but both Zip Genius (http://www.zipgenius.com/index.php?id=33) and 7Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) can handle RAR.

I was just trying to check how the Llamaserver (or whatever it's called) works. I guess I don't have to bother unless I'm hosting? (Which I'm not.)

I couldn't decide between the Arcs and the Vans (neither of whom I've played before), but since I'm also signing up for the slower game I'll play the Arcs (Arcoscephale) here and the Vans there.

What else do I need to do before we start? (I suppose I can create a pretender at my leisure before gamestart?)

No, I think everyone's still on board except for Nefaro, whose slot I usurped conveniently substituted for.

I'll be playing the Arcos for this game (a new faction for me). I'll be playing Vanheim for the 5-day-turnaround game (also a new faction for me). My pretenders will have the same name (alternate universe twins!  :D ) and will be similar yet also quite different (alternate universe different twins!  8) )

You may proceed to fear the coming of That Which If I Named It You Would Have A Hint On CounterDesigning Your Pretenders About! (Note: not actually named Twiini Ywhah Oc'Dypa, however. So don't get ideas.  ;) )

Well, Jason welcome to the game! Glad you want to jump in for Nefaro.

If we're all fine, I can setup the game one Llama. But first I will need your email address, Jason. Please send me a PM.

When the game is setup you will all need to send your pretender to Llamaserver.
You can send your pretender file as an attachment to:

pretenders@llamaserver.net

You can find your pretender file in your Dominions 3\savegames\newlords folder.
it has a file format <era>_<nation>_0.2h

It will overwrite and old pretenders for the same era/nation.

After all the pretenders have been sent in the game can be kicked off and you will receive your turns in the mail.
Just send your turn back to turns@llamaserver.net (probably just reply to sender)

Only send in the .2h file. The .trn file is only sent by Llama to YOU.

For a FAQ on Llamaserver go here (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=35160)

Ditto.

Ys, won't you need the list of our pretender's names, too? Or does having our email address (and registering that for the game) take care of such things? -- the server makes sure we're using a valid pretender submitted to the general pretender list (with a password set so no one else can use our pretender)?

My email is the same as listed under my avatar for any post, by the way, in case anyone wants to contact for diplomacy. But I'll send it to Ys by forum pmail, too, to avoid spambots trolling for info. (I check my email more often than Grog's pmail, though, so send game correspondence to my email.)

@Jason: You will need the name of the game to upload your pretender. I have no task in that.
If you are unsure on how to proceed, I have linked a FAQ that answers all questions cencerning Llamaserver (for players and hosts) in the first post of this thread.

*Drumroll*

Gentlemen! Let me officially welcome you all to our first Grognati Dominions 3 PBEM game!
Because we all are noobs in a greater or lesser sense I have chosen to name our game The_Big_Pretenders, completely in tune with Dom3 lore. ;)
It has been created on Llama and is waiting for Pretender submissions.

Watch the underscores (_) in the name when submitting your pretender.

Here is the link to the status page of our game on Llamaserver: The Big Pretenders (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=The_Big_Pretenders)
Here you will find a download of the map I have chosen, called Fields of Battle.
I am not familliar with it, but it seems to suit our needs, sizewise and on top of that it looks quite good as well.

Before we kick off in earnest, I want to stress one more time that if you are going to have a problem sending a turn in on time, post your request for a delay in this thread as early as possible! We cannot use the rollback feature of Llamaserver as it is known to break games entirely.
Also, Llama will autohost the game after the interval, wether you have sent in your orders or not.
4 stales in a row usually means people are going to look for a substitute over at the Dom 3 community forums, but that's not applicable for our game here. But just so you know once you are going to play with the big boys later.

A note as your admin: I work irregular schedules so I might throw in the odd request for a delay myself.

All game related communication should be posted here, except for diplomacy, of course.

I hope everyone is going to have fun and we all learn to become better players in the end!

Yes, I forgot to update the first post, will do so immediately. Thanks for pointing it out.

I won't have time for doing an AAR. It will be difficult enough to just keep notes (where I can find them back!) about what I am up to. :D

Only Niefelheim to submit a Pretender God and we have liftoff!
I'll hold off autostarting. I will manually kick the game off once everyone has sent in their pretender and everyone has reported in to be ready (mods working, map downloaded).

This is fun to read, and i don't even have a clue what the game is all about. have fun chaps.

Hopefully Huw and Under'geek will provide some AARs.

Basically it's a less detailed and yet far more detailed version of Master of Magic (for example low-res minimal graphics but about 290 pages of instruction), with a unique combat resolution system (give initial setup orders to the troops and then watch the AI play out the battle), and highly imaginative factions (instead of typical elves, dwarves, undead, hobbits, low men, high men, orcs, etc.).

Yskonyn (who is also hosting/administrating the game) will be playing with the Eagle Kings, a faction known as Caelum, comprised of three tribes of winged humanoids and their supporters. They work well in icy cold, and use a lot of Air magic. Also a lot of FREAKING MAMMOTHS!!

(We don't yet know who each player's chief mage is going to be, but it could be anything from a dragon to a vampire queen to a fountain of bubbling water to a naked sexual giant. And in the game!  8) (This game lends itself to lots of "and in the game" jokes. ;) ))

Huw is playing the New Faith Ermor faction, based on the late Roman Empire, if the late Roman Empire had had a fire-based priest-mage theocracy which is now being replaced with worship of a guy who returned from the dead in a shroud, leading over the next few ages to a highly undead faction.

(The game has three ages available to play in, with factions being different from age to age. There are ways to easily mod the game so that faction types from all ages can play, but the Ermor faction for this age won't be going into full undead ruin. Also, the designers intentionally set up the factions as dark crapsack world reflections of realworld legend, history, myth and religion, so there are no inherently "good" sides, everyone is corrupted and trends toward decay and power abuse. Thus the in-game joke; in this game "Christianity" means people worship a guy who came back from the dead and so of course they become an undead ruined civilization two ages later. Each age has no less than two or three Lovecraftian horror factions, too.)

Undercovergeek is playing the Niefelheim Sons of Winter faction, which by the standards of this game is pretty close to its source material: a cold-based (thus air-based) faction of frost giants and hags and jarls, descended from (one of) the former undisputed rulers of the world. He will most likely crush all opposition, figuratively and literally. I'd bet on him, if money was at stake.

Ubercat is playing the Mictlan Reign of Blood faction, also pretty close to its source material, the legends and practices of the Aztecs. We can expect a lot of blood magic usage from him. (Blood magic works a little differently in Dom3 than other schools of magic: people have to be rounded up from the population and killed to get their blood.)

Lastly, I'm playing Golden Age Arcoscephale, a mixture of Bronze Age Greek pagan, philosophical and historical/military sources. I won't have hoplites (those come from a later age), but I'll have access to myrmydons and chariots and winged horses and some things of that sort. No real archers to speak of (but maybe I can find some elsewhere), but I have engineers who can help in castle sieges, and philosophers and mystics and sceptics who can think about things really hard. I also have an expensive and high-maintenance harem of seductive magical women, whom I can trapeze around the world as super-combatants. (And in the game!  ;D )

I'll be slaughtered in less than three years, guaranteed. ;)  :P

Between faction variety and "pretender" variety (those are the player character mages, each vying to take the place of the vanished supreme God, all of whom are more-or-less right bastards in various ways and degrees), and the number of spells and items available, the strategic options of this game are absolutely crazy.

Thanks for the fantastic summary by the way!

Considering how your faction turns out historically, that's literally what happens!  ;D AND THEN THEY GRIND TO ASH ALL THOSE WHO OPPOSE THEM!!

Fortunately, I don't have to worry about countering that steamroller with Late Arcos.  :P

Btw, everyone remember that we're supposed to confirm to Ys that we've gotten and installed the proper mods and maps. (I've confirmed mine already.)

The Llamaserver says score graphs are still turned on for this game, Ys; but your initial description still reads off. (Also nothing about the special site freq being set to 45%...?)

The question of score graphs being on or off is of major strategic value, as it provides indirect but accurate information about one's opponents. Is he able to afford to rebuild from that blow I just struck; does he have strong reserves, or can I safely press the attack into his territory? How is his research going?--should I worry about him throwing a juggernaut at me yet? One place I can look for answers is the latest score graph.

I'm good either way -- I just noticed that it read as "on" in one place and "off" in the other, so I wanted to make sure you had set it where you really wanted it. (But I expect most mplayers want it "off", as it isn't really an in-game information route.)

Great that we are having some AARs later. I think I need to keep notes about my plans, so maybe I will post them as a form of AAR later too.

The docs have considered me fit for duty again, so thats good. I have to kickoff work with a stopover though, so I would like to request holding off starting the game for another 2 days . Then I can go full steam ahead.

You could say the first posts are open up to the point where you explicitly close them to your opponents; then after that, takes notes for posts as often as you like but put them up at some number of days delay where you feel safe, redacting out and generalizing information as you prefer.

I've seen people do this a lot on PBEM games at the Matrix boards; that's how I'd do it if I wanted to run a somewhat up-to-date AAR. The posts once I started them would keep readers updated on a regular basis, but lagging significantly behind the actual operations.

Think in terms of releasing information to newspapers. You want it accurate enough to give your own population some idea of what's going on (plus lies for propaganda and misinformation?!), but sanitized enough that it will be of minimal use for your opponents should they happen to also listen in.

Another option would be only to report on what your opponents are doing (including on what happens when your opponents run into you, but keeping it from your best guess of your opponents' perspectives). That might inadvertently give your opponents information on how good they're doing at fogging your war, but after all you don't always have to tell everything you think you've detected about your opponent. ;)

Thanks Nefaro.  I hope you're able to join the next game!

I couldn't get the CBM mod working in Linux for some reason.  Now I have to play the whole game in Windows! :(

I'll definitely join the next one.  Just didn't feel like messing with mods lately, at all.

If someone ends up dropping partway through, I might jump in as a replacement later on if you guys need a warm body.   Just send me a PM if so.

EDIT:  For multi-player AARs, you can also save all the screenshots and type it up/save the blow-by-blow in a word processor.  Then wait until the game has progressed quite a bit before you begin copying & pasting your AAR at the same pace, so it's always far behind the current game situation.

I will go over the settings before I tell Llama to start hosting.

Just a reminder to be sure: the interval we play turns in, is just a maximum limit. Once all turns are in Llama will host the next turn regardless of time left in the current interval.

Getting those excuses in early eh, Jason? ;)

To be fair, even with my short time with the game I've noticed that creating a pretender is pretty buggy.  I've learned that the best way to minimise the chance of things going awry is to make the fewest changes possible...i.e. if you change your mind about anything it's best to start over.

U'Geek (and anyone else, since he seems to have fixed it),

The .trn file should go in a special folder you create and name in the savegame folder. Don't use spaces in the folder name. Once the folder is in place, Dom3 should recognize the folder; and will recognize the game turn file subsequently.

On the other topic, what hurts is that I took some hefty negatives in order to bump up some other things. Now I'm not receiving those benefits, but I'm still receiving the negatives.

UG: I am afraid I have no access to any files sent to Llama. So I cannot return your pretender file to you.

A general tip: if you did something wrong with a turn, just send in the revised orders turn in. It will overwrite your old turn on Llama. Perhaps the same works with a pretender.

The message about Jason cheating might be because his mods are not the same as the ones selected in Llama?

I downloaded and installed all four, and the game shows them installed:

"Conceptual Balance Complete 1.94"
"Community Sprites Update 1.11"
Llama's version of "Streamers and Standards"
and "Upgraded Sprites"

All explicitly enabled, and all were enabled (except maybe "Upgraded Sprites" which I noticed hadn't been enabled yet earlier today before I received first turn) when I created my pretender.

Could be worse, I guess -- poking around for information, I ran into evidence that a major bug for Early Age Arco ramps the upkeep depending on how many other players there are. That hasn't happened (yet).

Looking back, I noticed that I sent a _1.2h pretender, since he was the one I recreated without the password, rather than 0.2h. I can't see why that would make any difference, but...

It does; I originally sent my pretender with a password (because I thought that was supposed to be done for PBEM), and then resent without the password.

Okay, wait, I think I might see the problem. I sent the original pretender with a 0.2h name, but sent the replacement as 1.2h (I think). Crap. That might be it, even though the system showed it accepted the pretender with no problem.

(Or did I...? I can't remember clearly. I know because I saved the emails that I sent the 1.2h name pretender, and I know I had made that one to get rid of the password so that wouldn't trip up PBEM, but I don't see evidence I sent the 0.2h pretender first.)

Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: JasonPratt on March 10, 2013, 04:11:08 PM
I dunno; looking back over this thread I only see evidence I sent in one pretender after removing his password, which would have been the 1.2h name. But Llama didn't have a problem with that; nor should it, it ought to accept age_faction_#.2h as a valid format. If it was going to have problems with 1.2h instead of 0.2h, wouldn't it have rejected my pretender from the beginning??

I hate to ask for a restart, but we're only one move in (or not even one move for some of us yet); I could at least try to send the pretender again.
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: JasonPratt on March 10, 2013, 04:20:24 PM
Crap! I think I may have designed my original pretender with a mod off, or something! I went back to recreate it, after erasing my 0.2h and 1.2h files (so it would create completely fresh), and the tally didn't add up right. When I went to check, I noticed my pretender now has an introductory construction magic pick that wasn't there before!! (I couldn't get rid of it, so I didn't accidentally click it; and it's still there as part of the starting magic when I canceled and created a pretender again.)

The only thing I can think is that "Upgraded Sprites", which may not have been enabled when I designed the pretender, overwrites whatever CBC 1.94 adjusts. Or maybe I didn't have CBC on in the first place somehow. sigh.

Anyway, I've found solid evidence that it's a mod problem on my end. Hold up before we restart, though, as I may prefer whatever the system did to "fix" my submitted pretender--I can see already I won't be able to get what I wanted last time...

Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]

Jason, I'm 90% certain that I created my pretender without any mods activated.  Sorry to complicate things, but that's the truth of it.

Like I said before, I just think pretender design is buggy as hell.  As soon as you start reversing options and trying other things you increase the likelihood of a bugged pretender, at least in my experience.
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: JasonPratt on March 10, 2013, 04:46:17 PM
Okay, I've got my pretender set up as close as possible to how I thought I was sending the first time. Fortunately, I could reduce some magic I didn't really need, and arrive at a result that was slightly more efficient in final expenditure than the first one! (3 left over instead of 12 I think last time.)

I'll resend that when the game is reset.

Sorry for the modsoup goofiness.  >:(

Huw, I know for a fact that the pretender I sent for the game was created from scratch with no readjustments, because I was directly building a new one without a password (so I didn't have to readjust something back, I just dialed all the settings in to match my first one).

Whatever the situation was or is, I also know for a FACT that my pretender did not originally have one built-in unremovable earth magic, whereas now it does. That's a mod change, which would explain the error message: I sent a pretender designed without the mod (somehow) that didn't include something the mod-pretender included, leading to a discrepancy in the build-cost.

I'm sure it's my fault somehow; I just don't know how.  :-\ I installed the mods before doing anything else -- my guess at the moment is that I didn't enable them in the mod list, I only looked and saw them available.

Anyway, they're now enabled for sure.  :)

Ok, I can't even open my first turn without installing the damn Community Sprites Update Mod. Does someone have directions for installing this one? The author neglected to put them in a folder, unlike the other mods. All of the files are just loose, zipped up together including the .dm file. The readme has some vague instruction to pick and choose just the files you want. Obviously I can't do that, as choosing "none" clearly doesn't work.

Do I have to make my own folder for this one so it works like all the other mods? If so, what exactly did you guys name yours? I assume that the .dm file also has to be left out of that folder, just like the other mods .dm files are.

If we do a restart, can we leave this one out, please? The other mods are fine but this one is a mess.
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: JasonPratt on March 10, 2013, 07:43:17 PM
The Community Sprites update is rather a twitchy thing anyway. Some of its sprites aren't enabled to start with and have to be manually enabled BY EVERYONE IN THE GAME; and I couldn't say for sure what actually is enabled even with it installed (and enabled). Then again, there are umpteen hundred sprites in the game, and except for the dragons and the phoenix (which don't start off activated) most of these aren't specific to the factions I'm playing with currently.

But anyway, it should be unzipped into Dom3's "mods" folder. Doing so should create a "Cmnt_Sprites_Update" subfolder (with stuff in it); a .dm of the same name; four png files showing the visual previews; and a text file explaining where everything came from and giving obscure instructions about how to activate the sprites that aren't yet activated.

Keep in mind that after a mod is installed, even though it is listed in-game in the mod viewer, the text for it has to be clicked to be "enabled". Trust me, this is important. ;)

Okay, if I understand the Community mod instructions properly, it starts with the following sprite modifications pre-activated.

Great Enchantress (one of two options)
Succubus
Palankasha
Vampire Queen (one of two options)
Lich Queen (the option with Nemes headdress not Nefertiti)
Vampire

Initiate of the Deep
Deep Seer
Great Seer of the Deep
Huskarl with spear
Huskarl with axe
Hirdman with spear
Hirdman with sword
Einhere
Herse
Archdruid
Archmage
Freak Lord

Everything else, including the dragons and the phoenix, are turned off by default (but may be modded by one of the other graphic mods of course).

The pngs however mention sprites the .dm file doesn't mention; and even though I've installed and enabled the mod, I know at least one maybe two sprites that ought to be activated which aren't. (Unless they're only activated in game, not during the pretender creation tool.)

I recommend not running the game with them enabled, even though a few make some noticeable improvements (especially the Archmage which now looks like Gandalf on Shadowfax {g}).

you not fancy the 5 day one Nef?

Ha! No.

Even if I was ready to Mod Soup it, I wouldn't want to wait so long in between turns - was already wary of the regular one taking a year to finish.  ;D

uber all i did, and by the looks of it, all anyone did was install the mod, unzip it the mod folder, take the contents of the folder and drop them outside of it into the /Dom3/Mod folder - so inside mods you will see the unzupped folder - Cmnty_Sprites_Update, the folder within that (now put straight into mods) - Community Sprite Update Mod v1.11 [Globu et al.], and from within the unzupped folder the - Cmnty_Sprites_Update.dm.

i havent done anything to it, not switched anything on/off, activated anything just dumped it in mods and it will appear in your mod preferences within the game - then just click it to switch it on

theres any easy option on Llama to roll the game back to 'waiting for pretenders' - im not going to touch it for fear it isnt that easy and let Yskonyn press the buttons, but i dont think its the end of the world - it would be nice to think you could clear out the lords folder and start again so Jason is assured hes definitely using the right one - but i guess this isnt possible

No we cannot use the rollback feature. It is known to corrupt savegames.
But its no problem to flag this as ended and restart.
I'll create a new game called The_Big_Pretenders2
If you guys dont want to fiddle with mods, I can share my mod folder on Dropbox. Just copy and paste.
Only create your pretender with All mods active. The sprite mods alter some pretender graphics.

The new game will be up for accepting pretenders in a short bit.

Edit: the old game has now been deleted from Llama and the new one is up accepting pretenders: The_Big_Pretenders, Take 2 (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=The_Big_Pretenders2)

You can download my modfolder from here: Mods Folder (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jyb7d6lrf2qzuw0/IjGxJEdP-b)

Three pretenders had been sent to the new game so far, and now it says there are none? I have to go to work in a couple of minutes, but will try resending mine again.

BTW, I copied the Mods file in place of mine and the community mod has installed OK.

Yes, tis weird. I did get an email back quickly saying that I had forgotten to send my pretender to any game! (I had left out the game title in the subject line.) Never got an email back acknowledging pretender receipt after I resent with the game as the subject line -- although the Llamaserver subsequently flipped over to "waiting for 2h". Also, I haven't gotten my move yet (6pm US Central standard.)

I was going to ask for a 6 hour extension, since I've got to hit the sack but my turn still hasn't arrived (after sending the turn request to Llama) and at six hours behind GMT the expiration would be shortly after 3PM here, before I even get off work.

But then I saw that the killdate for the turn was Wednesday, not Tuesday. :) (Lord, I hope the server resends my turn before too late tomorrow night!!)

On the other hand, I've killed several wolves and werewolves, so the night hasn't been a total loss.  8)

Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: Yskonyn on March 12, 2013, 05:32:06 PM
That is the confusing part I tried to explain earlier; The 24 hrs start when Llama pushes the turn out the door. So todays deadline is not the Same as tomorrows deadline.
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: JasonPratt on March 12, 2013, 05:40:51 PM
Actually, today's deadline is the same as yesterday's deadline!--probably because yesterday's was 48 hours ahead (by Llamaserver default), and turn 2 started more than 24 hours from the original deadline. Thus the new 24 hour deadline would have been within the original 48 hour deadline, in this case.

Or that's my guess. I sent my turn at 5:05 pm Central US standard, which is 6 hours behind Greenwich Mean, thus at 21:05 GMT Tuesday. The system generated our new turns immediately (I received mine one minute later). That should have set the clock for 21:06 GMT Wed; but instead it's (still, isn't it?) set for 22:03 GMT Wed.

Update: never mind, when I checked Llamaserver's current clock, I'm five hours behind. 5pm = 17:00 + 5 hours = 22:00 (plus apparently a slight difference in their system clock's and CServe's.)

I blame daylight savings time...  :P

quick question before submitting turn - do Indies attack you? and is a garrison still a garrison without a commander - will they still perform garrison duties without one?

Garrisons are provided their own minor commander if you get the garrison level over 10, and at over 20 they get a second commander. Capitols start off garrisoned over 20, so don't worry.

Also, I think my diddly little first commander just entered the Hall of Fame with HEROIC STUPIDITY!

After running the hell away.

Man, I'm completely surrounded by cavalry and heavy infantry!  It's gonna take a while to start claiming territory.  I suppose I could send Dave into the fray, but he's busy researching!

I've also realised I need to finish reading the manual.  I still have loads of questions about how all of this works.  Oh, and also, unless I'm mistaken it seems that crowns don't necessarily denote capitals.

Instead of throwing out empty threats, you could think about the role mighty Caelum might play in your 'problem scenario'.
We can be dependable allies.
So sad Dave had to run his mouth like that. Tsk. Tsk.
Oh well. His head probably looks awesome on our icy spikes.

Yeah!  Are you surrounded by the buggers too?

Having said that, I just won a battle against them in which they were decimating me...but as soon as they took some casualties they ran away.  Is that because they didn't have a commander?

Any chance of that happening tonight, or can I safely go off and do other things? (I could still safely go off until tomorrow afternoon, but I'd naturally rather get my turn in asap just to be sure.)

Geek, apparently scout reports are 50-200% inaccurate, that would explain the battle you mentioned.  The number of units listed in a scouted province is always the minimum...

Having just sent in my turn, it looks as though Ysk didn't get his turn out on time before he had to leave. Too bad; hope his mission goes well, though.

Consequently, he left a delay until Wed March 20, 19:13 GMT. Most likely he'll be back long before then and sending in his turn (but from what he said not until Sunday.)

Ysk said that indies don't attack you, but they certainly do.  Just not from neighboring provinces, I think.  Seems to be a random event.

I've seen them invade my provinces before but I'm not exactly sure of the mechanic.  I've seen the announcement in my turn messages regarding Independents attacking, and often taking one over if it didn't have a lot of PD on it.  It seems to be a random event, and they may also weight their target towards lower-PD provinces.  Also witnessed a couple Indie attacks on nearby AI nations, too.  :D

I think we're going to have to start the FAQ thread you mentioned, because I still have no clue about lots of aspects of the game.

The magic system is definitely the deep end of the pool.  There's a huge amount of spells, and a fair amount of variety in mixing & matching crafted magic items on your Leaders.  One big hurdle in understanding how to maximize Magic-spamming is getting your Spellcasting Encumbrance and Reinvigoration to a good point where they're gaining only a small amount of extra fatigue, and regaining it as fast as possible, which entails tailoring your magic item loadouts quite specifically for each individual along with keeping them in some extra gems and programming their lead-off spells so they can cruise through the rest of the turns with the AI running them (and hopefully not tiring them out so much that they start sucking).

The next big hurdle for me is messing with the Communal Casting in the mid-to-late game.  I've not even tried it yet but read through the general concepts enough to have an idea.  That's where you pull out the big guns!  ;D
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: Huw the Poo on March 16, 2013, 01:43:07 AM
Thanks for the explanation, Nef.  One thing that really had me puzzled was how many gems were required for a spell.  The only place I could find the info was page 226 of the manual, in the appendix:

Quote
Spells costing 100 fatigue or greater require one gem of the primary path. For every full 100 additional fatigue, a spell requires another gem. So for a spell
of 700 fatigue, like undead mastery, 7 gems are required (plus several more are probably advisable just for fatigue reduction).

Why isn't that in the chapter on, you know, magic?!  :o

My turn was indeed submitted.
Llama is a bit weird when you try to control the hosting interval. For example, it did not accept my postponement request.
Instead I have now lengthened the hosting interval, but this does require me to keep tabs on things because once hosted I will stale.
And I am not sure how well the system works with shortening the interval, therefore I need to be careful with choosing a time.

Anyway, thanks for pointing out my half truth there, Nef ! You are completely correct.

There is a problem with it reaching the mailservers.
Games will not host until it gets fixed. Nothing we can do about it.

I'm going to wait until the game is over before producing an AAR, since Geek is doing one while we play.  I'll be keeping notes throughout though.  In fact, I'm going to do it in a style that I've seen elsewhere, and punctuate my notes with thoughts from after the game is complete - hopefully it will then act as a learning material for someone as well.

Geek, what's the best way of taking screenshots?

Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]

Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: Yskonyn on March 18, 2013, 02:36:25 PM
I would suggest using a little program called Bandicam instead of Fraps.
It does everything Fraps does, but concerning video it makes much smaller files and keep performance unaffected while recording.
No idea wether it would work on Linux, though.

Don't worry, the interval has been changed already. Llama will pause hosting until the issue has been fixed. After that normal interval will continue again.

so i have a province 2 away from my capital - it has no fort - do i get ANY of its resources and cash or is it just burning away because there is no fort attached there?
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]

You get both. The cash you can spend anywhere. The resources, though, can only be spent in that region for units indigenous to that space.

Production is also a factor of unrest in an area, and how the area is being affected locally by scales.

But the point to a fort is that faction specific units (although not capitol specific units) can be made there. So it's important to be able to divert resources from adjacent territories to the fort, since otherwise you're stuck making only what's available locally in the province. Whereas with a fort, I get the benefit of some of the surrounding area production capability to make sceptics.

... ......... not that I'm flooding everyone's area with sceptics.  ;D

You get a small baseline amount even from territories that aren't next to one of your forts (IIRC?) but having one in or adjacent will give it a good boost, of course.  ;)

Sure, if you can afford to. You may want to check what's available in each region, though. If you find one with some cool units, such as amazons, you may not want to be sucking alot of the resources out of that space into one or more adjacent forts. Might be better to put one IN that space.

I think it usually depends on how the map creator has it set up.  It looks to default without any extra sites in your start location, but it depends on the map you're playing.

No, it's already max-searched (including for holy sites). I'm pretty sure the in-game map creator doesn't affect this.

Well, at 100 recruitment becomes impossible.  If you're letting the game manage the taxes in the province, that can be a useful indicator; if the tax rate gets too low, allow the unrest to ease off.

Unrest also affects production, and the chance of local uprisings (i.e. being attacked by an spontaneously generated army of independents).

Personally, I recommend you don't worry about unrest until around... 60. Maybe 75.

(But that's because I want to win.  ;D)

Remember that you can order an army to patrol a province so you can significantly increase your tax while keeping unrest under control.

Geek, does that hammer have any combat stats on it, like attack/defense?  If not I'm betting it's used for forging only.

As for spellcasting, I'm pretty sure the gems need to be of the same path, however I'd be interested to know what happens with a spell of more than one path.  In these cases I think the first path in its requirements list is the primary, so it's its gems that probably count here.
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: Phobos on March 29, 2013, 01:36:46 PM
this is not my game, but I can attempt to answer some of these questions.  I don't know that much about multiplayer, so please take what I say with a grain of salt.

Elephants: They are big sacks of hit points that simply walk all over anything smaller than them.

The simplest and most elegant counter to elephants is other large creatures.  An elephant can't do squat to a Neifel giant, other than wave it's trunk around.

The second easiest counter (and far from the best counter), is to throw massive waves of cheap troops at elephants until the elephants either get overwhelmed, fall over from exhaustion or the elephants reach their preset kill limit and return to their manufacturer.

The other elegant method of dealing with elephants is to make them rout from the battle, hopefully trampling members their own side as they run away.

You can counter some of the anti-elephant tactics.

You can't do much about giants, other than avoid them.

You can counter your elephants getting overwhelmed by casting protective spells like body ethereal.

You can counter fear tactics by having your mages cast spells to make your elephants go berserk or otherwise improve their morale.

Dwarven Hammer: While the Dwarven Hammer is a high damage magical weapon, it is probably too expensive to give to your warriors, unless you are really desperate.

You most economical option is to give it to commanders who are forging the most expensive item, or using magical gems that you have a limited supply of.  Then put it back in the lab or swap it around as needed.

Magical Gems:  As explained in the manual, the spellcasters rating in a magic path determines the fatigue gained from casting the spell.

A mage with 2 nature, casting a spell that requires only 1 nature, will only suffer half the listed fatigue from the spell (before other factors like armour encumberance are factored in).  A mage with 3 nature, casting the same spell, will only take 1/3rd the listed fatigue.

If a nature 1 mage was given a nature gem and ordered to cast the same spell, they would spend that gem and be treated as being a nature 2 mage, for the purposes of calculating fatigue.

You could give that mage more nature gems, but they can only spend as many gems on one spell as they have a rating in that magic path; so a nature 1 mage can spend only 1 nature gem per spell, a nature 2 mage can only spend 2 nature gems per spell, nature 3 can spend 3 gems and so on.

Gems spent must be of the same type as the spell being cast, or of the primary type if a spell has multiple paths.

Don't quote me on this, but I am not sure if blood slaves can be used to reduce the fatigue from blood magic.

Some powerful spells actually require gem expenditure to be cast, so managing the fatigue from casting these spells is something worth thinking about.  For a long battle, it could be an issue, but it is probably not a hassle if your spellcasters are just there in a basic support capacity.

Yeah making tramplers rout is an ideal way to go, if you don't have big troops to block.  I've heard that targeting "large monsters" with hordes of archers will wear down elephants already low Morale enough to (hopefully) have them half broken before contact.  Since their size is so large, it evidentally makes them easier for archers to hit, too.
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: Huw the Poo on March 30, 2013, 02:32:06 AM
That's interesting; I didn't realise that size is a factor.  I guess it's one "opportunity" for a hit per unit in the square, so a size 3 creature, for example, would be rolled 3 times to check for a hit?

Strategic troop movement only really applies within secure territories, btw. I can't run a bunch of strat3 troops across two provinces and into battle, for example.

(... ......... not that I've tried...)

Obviously there are spells and special abilities which negate this limitation.

I don't know how trample works exactly.

I do know it is a special attack related to movement.  So a trampling creature will move adjacent to an enemy, then start making trample attacks, with the number of attacks determined by how fast the creature normally is.  I don't know if/how spells like haste or quickness effect trampling.

This means something like an unarmoured mammoth can make more trample attacks than a heavily armoured minotaur.

Bigger creatures do more trampling damage.  The damage seems to be reduced in part by armour, but I don't think shields offer any protection.  I am not sure if the size difference effects damage (so I don't know if a size 4 Chariot will take less base damage than a size 1 goblin, from a charging elephant).

Trampling effects all units in a square that are smaller than the trampler.  So an elephant can trample cavalry, but a minotaur can not.  So a minotaur will just make normal attacks if their trample is 'blocked' by a single horseman.  There seems to be some kind of defence test in play, that allows units to avoid the heavy damage from trampling, so units with a good defence score should be able to slow down a trampler.  Due to the way defence tests work, high defence probably loses effectiveness against a fast moving trampler, or a large number of tramplers.

Honestly, if you are facing off against a dozen elephants, you should probably take Nefaro's advice and invest in a lot of archers.  The most I have had to deal with in a game is 4 elephants, in an independant province.  I have seen what a couple of dozen minotaurs can do to a regular army, so a large number of elephants with magical support is a threat you will have to plan for, if you hope to stop them.

It doesn't often work out that way, however, since anything besides wide open plain will stop you from moving further than 1 in a turn.  Along with only being able to attack 1 away, too, as mentioned.

Now.. flying ones?  They can move over such crap terrain and get full use of their movement speed.

I should mention perhaps that Niefelheim was very chivalrous (for deathy chaos Ragnarock giants and witches whose dominion poisons the land) about offering to let my first attack pass without retort. I'm certainly the aggressor in this fight, although I have my reasons (only one of which is that this way he has more to write about in his AAR asap.)

I live die hope to entertain!

Also, I watched the battle finally, and I did in fact manage to kill maybe three giants. Not one.

(Keep in mind that giants not only have tough armor to punch through but they also regenerate every round. I expect that includes even his skirmishers. It doesn't help that at least half his giants turn to werewolves and start over again when near death. GIANT! DAMNED! WEREWOLVES!)

Fortunately, the deepness of my strategy will become apparent desperate soon. Not soon enough, but soon.

which is right - the battlefield replay or the battle summary?

the summary for me says lost 1 commander and no normal troops - and he was a human indy one!

Sorry for the slight delay. (again... sigh). I have another stopover planned for friday. So expect another 48 hour delay then.
After that it's done for stopovers for the next 3 weeks. :)

Be advised, due to some delay the due date of the turn might have been changed from what you were anticipating!

Current due time is now: Tuesday April 16th, 20:12GMT !

I suggest we go for 32 hour limits or even 48 hours limits from now on. My orders phase is getting pretty long and I need more and more time to play a turn. (Around turn 20 is pretty standard)

Yeah I think that's the default order.  You'll automatically repair the walls, but if the enemy has a stronger force the walls will still come down eventually.

Well, if you joined the pre-undead / giant werewolf hordes you could have a very boring fight against me for the next few turns, and then be stuck with those guys. Or if you joined us, you could have much more interesting fights for a while against the local giants.

However, I will observe that so long as you hold off either way, the question of the game is still in (a bit of) doubt (insofar as any game with Niefelheim in it can be considered "in doubt" ;) ). Which makes your neutrality very valuable to both sides, and pretty much guarantees that everyone else will leave you to grow unchecked for a while.

Well the skies for Caelum are darkening.
We are truely at our last stand now that Caelum itself is under siege.

I hereby officially surrender to Ermor. Apart from the walls that seperate our forces, we have no way to put up any decent defense, now that Niefel has obliterated the mainstay of our troops.

I will not go AI or anything, so you just have to finish the siege and I will keep on fighting, but it is now a good time to have one of you guys take over the admin function for this game.
Please drop a note if you want to.

Jason actually decimated one of my forces with about 20 mages in communion, the 2 final acts of shame was turning one of my werewolf berserker heroes into a warthog and then killing him with lightening - thus creating a small onfield BBQ and also casting swarm and making me fight thru a horde of dragonflies whilst getting pummelled from above - i almost made it to his back line but my 2 bane lords were so heavy with fatigue i think they fell asleep

A noble opponent to the end, mighty Caelum!  Thank you very much for orchestrating my first ever game of Dominions 3 and letting me beat you! ;)

Is it really that bad though?  I notice you suddenly have many more troops at Caelum, and meanwhile my armies are starving to death (and I'm still very much a noob and have a lot to learn about the game).  It has been a hard slog, fighting my way through your accursed lands!  I have healers doing what they can but my troops are quite...ill. :(

Yes it is that bad. :)
My forces are consisting of mere scholars, some raggedy band of archers and a few leftover mammoths. And they are all scattered.
My economy has been destroyed and I am unable to recruit more than 3 units per turn.
I really see no way to make a stand anymore.
Caelum is done for, so lets get it over with! :)

If Ermor thinks they cannot hold the siege then I am interested to see how this will fare...

It was a pretty fun game no less!!

U'geek, if you retreated from sieging Caelum's forest castle, that was probably a good idea since I was coming to help my ally there very soon.

Meanwhile, anyone thinking of invading my dominion had better watch out for the Wrath, which will be constantly harassing you with increasing artillery barrages the further in you get.

I have some other surprises gearing up in the near future as well.

This was my strategy all along -- I would have been here much sooner except (1) my imprisoned pretender took just about the absolute range to break free; and more importantly (2) I thought I had a chance at slowing down Niefel's growth that I thought I had better take, forgetting that his giants regenerate more and have heavier armor than my extensive missile barrages could handle. Of course, U'geek offered to let those assaults pass, but in character I couldn't accept amnesty from chaos deathy blood giants once I started fighting with them. The upshot is that I was the one whose growth was delayed. ;)  :P Almost fatally so. It came awfully close.

Anyway, I'll be sending some help to my ally (if he stays in the game) in other ways, too, quite soon, now that I have a bit of breathing room.

So I recommend either eliminating him quickly, if you think that's possible, or retreating.  >:(

No, I'm confident I can win.  Only half of my forces are attacking Caelum; I can divert more if necessary.  I'm just saying it was a lot harder than I expected it to be, chiefly due to your damned dominion effects!

(Ysk should have changed the topic header when we came up with another running game or two. At the time this was the only game, so when he first created the thread there was no reason to distinguish; and I've clicked here before myself thinking it was Middle Age, because when I'm tired "MP" looks like "MA".  :D  :-[ )

Which is funny, because I was trying to spam horror marks on you. For all the fat lot of good that did me -- I didn't see a single horror show up to munch on you at all.

Ysk, all I can do now is speedbump him; I still have some troops, and I can play for a little more time, but I'm out of ideas under the current circumstances. Unless you have some new ideas to try, I'm in favor of tipping the king and trying to evacuate our people through our shared lands. :(

If you're working on a plan, I can hold on maybe three more turns depending on what he does next. Research continues; maybe I'll come up with something useful. But (as Undergeek most likely knows already, and as you'll know from correspondence), my pretender has been feebleminded; and is immobile anyway, so might as well be imprisoned again for all the good she can contribute now (mainly dominion affects). So even if I do research something useful, she wouldn't be able to cast it.

Perhaps I'm wrong but I thought horror marks don't necessarily mean a horror showing up straight away; I thought that it confers a chance of that happening, with the probability increasing over time?
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]

From what I understand Horrors tend to attack horror marked units in preference to other units.

I do not know how Horror Attraction works exactly.  From what I have gathered, there is a small chance per turn of attracting a Horror.  I don't think it is cumulative, just iterative probability.

Of course, multiple Horror Marks increase the odds of attracting a Horror.  Horrors also spread Horror Marks with their attacks, so at a certain point a Horror Marked commander will attract more powerful Horrors if they are powerful enough to survive multiple confrontations with these creatures.

Because Horrors can't be controlled, I think the main purpose of spreading Horror Marks is to direct their attacks when they are summoned in battle.

I could probably muster up another sizable force, maybe two, before game end, but I really don't know what I'd do with them under the circumstances.

Intellectually I know a Wrath-based strategy is never going to work, but I can't seem to resist trying to experiment with some way to make it work whenever I have an opportunity. That and forgetting a couple of giant properties early (leading to an early attack, trying to keep them from getting too strong early, thus crippling my development scheme instead), leads to the conclusion where we are. No one to blame but myself.

Should we just hand over to AI, or what? Making Huw and U'geek slog through our territories seems pointless; Mictlan has waited too late to launch any spoiling flank distractions for us to pincer Niefel. (No blame to Mictlan, they were keeping neutral.)

The admin, notably, can declare the game over manually, once a public capitulation by all parties has been reached. Mictlan may want to forge on of course, but should Ysk set us to AI; or remove us from the game--and what does that result in, exactly? If it isn't the same as setting us to AI, what's the difference? (Could be a good opportunity to experiment with that, btw.)
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: Ubercat on May 01, 2013, 09:11:28 AM
If someone is going AI, it's much easier for them to do it themselves rather than making another person go to the trouble. I'm not aware that there's a way to do it without someone opening one of your turns and doing it manually; a more drawn out process than doing it yourself.

As for the comment about Jaguar Warriors being useless, I'm biting my tongue over here. Thanks for the coffee spew!  ;D
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]

Uber, no you're right, I keep forgetting that the "set player to AI" command in the server admin panel doesn't actually do that, but leads to instructions. It's certainly easiest for players to AI themselves.

Mainly what I want to know is whether that's most appropriate under the circumstances; or whether having the admin "boot" us from the game would be fairer to Ermor and Niefel and Mictlan -- and what exactly does that do? If we don't know, Ysk could experiment with one of us.

Aside from being deathy bloody chaos giants bringing about Illwinter and Ragnarok, I don't understand the question. (I'm not blaming you for winning our war, if that's what you mean.)

Amazingly, I still found something to do this turn. (I mean other than run away and/or fritter around as the giants close in.) Possibly also something to do in a couple of turns from now. We'll see. I don't know how much good it could possibly do, but it's better than trying nothing.

Jaguar Warriors have been instrumental so far in gaining me, what, more than 1/4 of the map? I couldn't have come this far without them and they did it while barely losing a man. Granted that was exclusively against indies, and they got butchered by the first player army they faced. Of course, I made that attack expecting to face only PD. I did not anticipate facing your troll horde and paid the price. Your huge PD force fled pretty early, I noticed.

Anyway, the next stage of my cunning plan is starting to unfold. I shall have the largest radish in the world! Muuuhahaha! and all that.  :)

I have units that only fight once then disappear.  They formed about half of the army I'm using to siege Caelum.  He just attacked that army with a single unit...losing of course, but causing all those one-use units to disappear afterwards.  I'm not sure I have the forces to storm the castle now, and the walls finally came down too.  I might have to divert the rest of my armies.
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]

Under the circumstances I'd say that was fair. :) He used legitimate knowledge of the game to exploit a weakness in a situation where your one-shot summons were vulnerable, because it was easy to predict when and where you would use them.

I hope when my time comes to die, I can do something that clever.  :D
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]

It's fair insofar as the game allows it, just as reneging on trade deals etc is fair.  I'm sure some would argue that the things mentioned in the OP are fair too.  I think this particular case is cheesy.
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: Yskonyn on May 02, 2013, 01:35:33 PM
Huw, my dear man, you flatter me to suggest my cleverness. Alas, I have to dissapoint you all.
It was not a deliberate action.

1) I wasn't aware that your units will vanish after an attack
2) I was merely taking back in last vain effort those provinces I deemed lightly defended.
3) If you are talking about my 'siege relieve force' then I have no pity for you at all. I am trying to reinforce my units at the castle.

So, which one of my armies did this heroic feat you speak of? ;)

Cleverness comes to the ignorant I suppose.

But be honest, if it WAS a deliberate action, it was pretty clever, no? And for a nation stomping over mine and having besieged our capital, you're just being a pouty little school girl who's chance on getting the big pink lollipop just went up in smoke. :D
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]

Oh and what to do...

Well I have no chance of doing anything. I am merely sitting out the turns because I don't want to be a spoiler.
If Jason also finds his situation to be hopeless, we could both go AI. That would leave you three to continue.

I agree that the whole Mictlan situation might become pretty interesting!

If so, then Jason needs to set his nation to AI himself. I can do it for Caelum.
Huw has proposed to take over admin and I am fine with that. It leaves the game to you three.

Agreed, you two need to decide what to do.  Yskonyn, whether you go AI or not doesn't really matter at this point, because I'll just be attacking your capital either way.  But yes, the situation with Mictlan is getting interesting and I'd like to see it play out. :)

As for the accusation of cheese...you sent a lone unit into the province where you knew I had a big army.  What did you expect to achieve?!  Relieving your besieged forces with one unit?
Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]
Post by: Yskonyn on May 02, 2013, 03:27:05 PM
IIRC it was a spy, so I had anticipated it would enable me to see your exact army. Not fight it.

As my situation is hopeless, I bow down and declare Caelum defeated.
I would like to handover all admin tasks for it to Huw.

Jason, of course, needs to decide for himself.

Yeah - do not put him on guard commander and then have the commander go feeble minded at the same time!

I really struggle with the battle mechanics sometimes.  I had a fight with one of Ysk's armies a few turns back that I really should have won but didn't.  He attacked me with a few infantry and some mammoths.  I only had local units, however half of them were armed with blowpipes which were successfully keeping the mammoths paralysed and we were slowly killing them.  Their infantry was killing mine but we were also killing theirs at an even pace.  If things had kept going we would've won with about half our forces remaining, but suddenly we broke and fled the battlefield.

I guess that one comes down to having units with low morale, but it really sucked.

Title: Re: Dominions 3 MP game [Running]

lol - whats happened now

Storming the castle is just too hard.  Due to the enemy dominion, my troops are half dead by the time they get there, and perform abysmally in battle, being unable to take out units that would have been no problem at all, all else being equal.  The enemy repeatedly casts a spell called Blade Wind which absolutely decimates my troops every turn.  And the enemy dominion also makes for very low morale, ensuring that my squads break very quickly.  I can't see a way of breaking through without gathering up at least 500 troops and sending them in...by which time the strength 900 walls will have been repaired, will have to be broken down again, leaving my new army half dead again.

I despair.  I'll be able to win eventually through sheer force but it will take forever and I don't think I can be bothered.  I'm sorry to say it but I might go AI.

Huw, as a general rule, I don't advance beyond my dominion. You've already knocked that player out, and sometimes a rush to press the enemy is a good idea, but I recommend retreating your forces and consolidating with temples and priests preaching at the borderlines.

U'geek, I was actually hoping to try an assassination on your pretender, but instead I assaulted your fortress. Not sure why, will have to ponder. There was something I could have done to (probably) prevent from being steamrolled by your rescue forces, too, which might have helped me attempt an assassination the next turn, but a different experiment hadn't worked out right and I felt kind of done for this game. :)

Under the circumstances, though, I feel pretty good that I even managed to besiege your home keep!  ;D

See, I'm sure I've read elsewhere that depending on how the game is playing out, dominion isn't necessarily that important.  I thought that the situation I find myself in was pretty normal and that I'm simply suffering from being a new player and not knowing how to play well.

(1) to try, if possible, to keep you from having several game years of uninterrupted growth and development (like Mictlan has had), because the giants scare me more in that than anyone else in our game (including Mictlan), and (2) to keep your attention fixed somewhere while an ally geared up and flankwhacked you.

The main problems with my strategy in that regard was (1) I barely had any effect (so far as I can tell) on your growth and development at all (except in a helpful way!) while crippling my own; and (2) Mictlan was never my ally. ;)

Ubercat, if Geek's going AI too (can you confirm that Geek?) we could just call it a victory for you, or you can keep playing.  Let me know either way.

Thanks, guys. I'll play until I'm the last non-AI player and then call it a game. It's up to Nefelheim, then.

Sorry I wasn't much of a challenge.  I had absolutely no idea what to do about those devils.  Well, I did have a couple of thoughts but they weren't really achievable at that point in the game for me.

What the hell did it cost you to summon that many?

I'll set up a new EA game early this week (after taking some time to figure out what the heck I'm going to do with Ulm MA); but I'll let forum interest dictate the size. My guess is that it'll be a small game anyway. If it turns out to be a large game, we can still set up small games on the side.

Since I'm taking over Ulm in the Middle Age game, I'm strongly thinking of playing Ulm in Early Age, too. (I've never played Ulm in any age before.)

I might give Caelum a try and see if I can solve the awful troops problems.

The blood of innocents. Lots and lots of innocents. They're 3 blood slaves a pop. I had anywhere from 8-12 High Priests summoning them every turn. I also forged about 4 of the contract thingies for 65 slaves each. They spawn 1 devil every turn. On the second to last turn I summoned my first arch demon. The one I randomly got has the ability to summon devils!  ;D I didn't get a chance to use it and see how many I'd get.

I'd like to take Mictlan again if I can. There was an entire aspect of my strategy that I never got to use. (At least I never noticed it occur in a battle). I think I'll focus on that more, and try 1-2 other things in combination with it.

NO DEVILS this time. Fair?

Didn't you end up with loads of unrest after getting all those slaves?  Were you able to contain it to one or two provinces?

That remark just gave me an explanation for why my capitol has so much unrest in the Late Age game: I rescued about 25 blood slaves from pirates sometime in the past game year, and I have no idea what to do with them -- I can't restore them, using them would be super-evil, giving them to someone else would also be super-evil. (My pretender is roughly lawful neutral, so roleplaying him he wouldn't do that.) A recent event involved some rebels freeing a few of them from my castle, which I was perfectly happy about. But I never connected their presence to my 20 unrest. Makes sense now!

I don't think having the slaves causes unrest. I think the unrest comes from blood hunting.

Oh. Too bad, because that would explain a lot. (Jomon doesn't blood hunt. Well my character doesn't, the faction can summon some bloodhunty heromonsters.)

Gold was only critical to me in the early part of the game. After I had a large Devil force going I took my troop recruitment down to a trickle. I set taxes to zero in my heavy blood hunting provinces. You'd be surprised how many people would sell their kids in exchange for tax exempt status!

I'd rather not restrict the size to start with, so I'll open it up to as many players who want in. However, if a large game thus develops and some people would rather have a small Early Age game I'll set up one of those on the side, too.

But first I'll wait to see if the EA game turns out small anyway. :)

Yes, the EA game I've been talking about will be EA.  :P My theory is that we should have at least one game (or a subfamily thereof) of each age going at a time.

Yes, post it on Desura (and Shrapnel and Wargamer and maybe Matrix) once I put it up. Dom3 is a nice evangelical aid for bringing in new members. :)

A new experimental game (possibly EA or possibly multi-age) has now been set up. (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=5981.msg144409#msg144409)

If this turns out to be a large game (which I'm provisionally expecting from the outset) and some members want a small game, I'll set up a small game later. If this turns out to be a small game, I'll dial back to a smaller map proportionately.
