mmIntroducting GrogHeads' March Mayhem

The GrogHeads Staff, 24 February 2013

So here comes March Mayhem from GrogHeads. It's your chance to have a say in pursuit of the greatest land combat commanders of all time.

WE EXTENDED THE DEADLINES BECAUSE OF TIME NEEDED TO CLARIFY SOME Q&A FOR FOLKS. SEE NEW DATES BELOW.

How does this work?

Simple - you're making your case for who you think is the greatest land combat commander of all time.

You get to pick the greatest commanders of all time, and decide who the champion on the battlefield would be.
Participants pick the person they think was the greatest land combat commander of all time, and submit a 250-500 word essay defending their choice (no more than about 1 page of typed text).

Each week, we will post the pairings of commanders facing off against each other, along with the participant-submitted essays, to the front page of the site, and invite the public to vote on who would win the face-off between those commanders. All voting will take place in forum threads specifically for March Mayhem.

Within those threads, open discussion is allowed, where people can poke holes in each others' cases, ask questions, refute assertions, etc. etc.

Participants may submit changes to their essays each week before the next round of voting begins.

Voting is strictly knock-out voting, so 2 commanders enter, 1 commander leaves.

After each week, we will randomly pair off the commanders for the next week's face-off.

At the end of it all, the winner gets a year subscription to Armchair General Magazine* and (if we can figure out how) a special forum tag as the March Mayhem victor.

What you need to do:

1. If you're not a member of the forums - GO SIGN UP ALREADY! But you do need to be a registered GrogHeads forum user to participate.

2. Sign up here, with the name of the commander you're choosing. First one in gets their choice (think of it as a reward for living on the forums instead of just checking in every now and then). If two or more people try to claim the same guy, the first one to sign up, as date/time-stamped by the forums, gets it. GET SIGNED UP BY 3/3/13

3. Submit your essay to Longblade (longblade - at - grogheads - dot - com) no later than Friday 3/1 THURSDAY 3/7/13.

4. Watch for the pairings starting on Saturday 3/2 SATURDAY 3/9/13 and go vote in the forums.

5. Argue, bicker, attack, defend, and support your case in the forums as you try to make the case on why your guy should win.

6. If you're the winner on any given round, you will have the option to edit and amend your essay from week-to-week. However, you have to get your edits to Longblade by midnight, Eastern time each Friday for us to get them posted.

If we have an odd number of participants sign up, the first round will be an everyone-in battle royale, in which all the commanders will be thrown in together, and the top 4 / 8 / 16 (whatever we need to make the bracket come out even) will then be paired off starting the next weekend.

*non-US participants will receive an alternate prize subject to local laws / regulations.
