Hi guys,
I would like to ask you about the saddest death in gaming. Which one is yours? After a serious consideration I think that mine is Elias in Call of Duty Chosts.
Losing your first high ranking X-Com soldier.

+1. That was a particularly sad scene.
I can be pretty torqued about whenever my main character gets killed... >:D
For a more serious answer, I'm not going to lie, I was pretty upset when Aerith Gainsborough died in Final Fantasy 7 (spoiler for one of the most famous games of all time). Though that was at least half because I had spent some serious grinding time leveling and blinging her up to be competent in a fight. :buck2:
Still, it's worth noting that out of all the characters who have died in game stories over my many years in gaming (since the late 70s), she's the one I immediately think of when the question gets asked.
That being said, a particular character death in Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War saddened me a lot more, with no merely pragmatic resentment about having worked so hard on getting that character up to speed. I don't want to spoil that though -- anyone who has played AC5 should know who I mean.

+1 That was really sad.
Razel Puzzelwell in Planescape Torment. For the first half of the game your sure she's the bad guy in the story but when you catch-up to her, you find what she did was because she was in love with the main character and had been waiting for him to return to her. Unfortunately, when you try to leave her, she turns on you and you have to slay her to continue. At least that's the way it played out when I played the game. That part disturbed me for some time afterward. Many other parts of the game were also very sad including the ending which was probably the most tragic part of all.
The hero's father in the first Suikoden. Magnificent piece of storytelling.
And, following Brant's lead, Donald Featherstone.
Best,

I would have to add, Sgt. Houston 1st. Platoon, E Company, 2/16 Bn. The Big Red One Div. who in CMFI's Troina Campaign, battle 3, "Hill 1073" lead E Company's advance all the way to the top of Hill 1073 only to get shot in the face when spotting for enemy while the rest of the squad was hiding. Oddly enough he had just told the men of 2nd Squad to "Keep your eyes open" and apparently had his closed and missed the German MG in a trench 50 meters away. In lieu of flowers, the men of E Company ask that you send one good tank instead. RIP Sgt.Houston :'(

Nice, I've always thought that BF should explore some mild rpg elements to CM. I've had some pretty amazing exploits go down by my pixel truppen that would have been nice to have an interim screen to give medals or something and have a bio of actions participated in.

I've got it on mine too, part of an Infocom collection. Fun but maddening stuff.

Red Dead Redemption:
John Marston
^^ Have to admit, that one's pretty tough.
Though partly offset by him rising from the grave later to become a bad-ass anti-zombie zombie of vengeance riding one of the horses of the apocalypse (preferably the one that sets zombies on fire.)
Um, spoiler.

This one really upset me as well when I saw the cutscene.
I'm going back to the 1988 classic, Starflight.
It's realizing that the Galactic Scourge, the expanding ring of supernovae that have been chasing aliens outward in the Milky Way for the last 2000 years, was in fact triggered by the Elerians. Yup, the geographically-slow-moving, exquisitely intelligent, silicon-based life forms that I've been unknowingly using (and enthusiastically selling) for most of the game as very high-priced spaceship fuel.
Talk about a buzzkill for the great wealth and super-powerful ship that I'd been building over the course of the game...
In my very first play through of Baldurs Gate when it first came out, I kept Jaheira and her husband Kahlid in my party through the entire game. It was sad to see Kahlid dead at the very start of Baldurs Gate 2.
Good call Rayf! -- and it has proportionate plot importance, too.
Anderson at the end of Mass Effect 3. Realizing there was no way he didn't die, no matter what you did, really pissed me off.

I always thought....why couldn't it have been Boo?
No, Rayfer. Boo was the Bomb. Kahlid was the annoying one though a good fighter. Mysteries of Westgate has a quest line that will take you back. Speak to the "Shady Huckster" on the street and for 5 gold, he'll tell you a tale about the famous Rashmon Ranger, Minx and his pet space hamster, Bloo. After the story, he offers to sell you the actual Bloo for 10 gold. Check in his basket and you'll find street rats and one real hamster. Talk him into selling you the hamster and you will have Reet. Not Boo or Bloo but he looks just like Boo from Baldurs Gate. You can interact with him in your inventory and he opens up a new quest to defeat the ultimate threat to Rodent-kind, The Brotherhood of the Ferret. It's a short but very cleverly written quest.
Mirth I agree, Anderson's death in ME3 was sad as well. Especially since he always believed in Shepard right from the get go. His constant support both morally and physically throughout the whole series is touching. His death at the end is very painful.
Not as painful as the ending to the whole series though.

Interesting....I never played Mysteries of Westgate...is it a NWN's expansion? I just grew tired of the "Go for the eyes Boo, go for the eyes" shouts during battles. But all in all, there was some great, memorable gaming to be had.
Mysteries of Westgate is a user-made mod for NWN2. Designed for lower level characters so no Demon Lords or Dragons. Pretty good so far that I've played. In Baldurs Gate 2, Minsc had some new lines that were pretty good as I remember along with a new ability to search or go stealth I think. I loved the little Elf Mage/Cleric as she could cast every spell in the game. There's a BG2 version of NWN2 in the works but I haven't heard anything about it in awhile.
I'm going with Gygax. For all the reasons previously stated.

Do you mean BG2 redone in the NWN2 engine? That would be worth watching out for. They just did an enhanced edition of BG2. I haven't played it but did buy and play the BG1 enhanced edition.
Yes. It was BG2 using the NWN2 engine. I last saw it on the RPG.com site I think.
Sorry. That was RPGWatch.com. My Bad.

+1 to that, indeed.
Just one detail, Mysteries of Westgate was official, paid DLC

You are right of course Bletchley. My error. I thought I remembered it being originally a mod posted on the Neverwinter Nights site. I'm still enjoying it a lot but there are an awful lot of cramped indoor locations and if you remember the whole camera-fighting UI problems... they're still there.
I'll add Tony Bath to the mix. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Bath
I met him (when I was in my early twenties) IIRC in 1984/5 in Southampton. A very nice guy, full of enthusiasm for the hobby. He was closely connected with WRG, Miniature Figurines, wargame rules design.
Actually, all these deaths are very sad. I don't think you can really rank any one persons as the saddest. Let us remember them, and honour their contributions to our hobby. :)
ok...I'm confused. Ithought this thread was about gaming. characters...hence Rabbit. are we talking real people?

Seems to be a mix between fictional death and real. Gary Gygax, and Donald Featherstone have been mentioned already, along with a number of fictional characters from games. :)
Razel Puzzelwell was real. She lived down the street when I was a kid in a black house. I didn't walk on her grass on the way home from school.
For me it certainly was FF7's Aerith.
But more recently I was pretty shocked by Sarah's death in the starting minutes of 'The Last of Us' as well.
