Title: Steel Fury 1942 STA 3.3 Mod
Post by: Jarhead0331 on July 21, 2018, 07:07:24 PM
We've been talking about this mod in the IL-2 thread and figured it wasn't fair to IL-2 and Tank Crew to detract from the discussion for a totally different sim, so I'm creating a separate thread for STA. Looks like Grim is hopping on the band wagon too, so that makes at least 2 of us. I'll be posting some screen shots, observations and maybe some AARs in the near future. Hope this generates some interest. I'll still focus on Tank Crew for my VR experiences, but when it comes to non-VR, the STA mod is best thing available for WWII ground combat and tank simming.

I think he is in the Ukraine. Time difference can be a pain, but overall, when he is around, I've found that he replies very quickly. Hang in there, bud.

This video shows an assault on a Soviet defensive line by a mixed force of armor and infantry. It comes from one of the add-on campaign packs with 10 missions.

SQUEE!

...uh, I mean, SQUEE EEEK!

...
.....

...uh, I mean, like in the squeaks of a tank chassis in movement, and the rotation of the turret.  :D

Jarhead. That video is AMAZING!! It's exactly what I want from tank crew... just want multiplayer to go with it in a campaign and it would be perfecto.
That video blew me away. Imagine tank crew having this sort of detail. Downloading the demo. It still seems to be $20 at gamersgate and not on steam.
Do you need the european version to use the mod?

I thought you would fall in love with it. As far as I know, it is not MP. SP only...this makes me happy, but I know you have a group that you like to play with. I could be wrong though...its not something I have looked into.

I have the US Gamersgate version of Steel Fury, so you do not need the euro version of the game to install and use the mod.

Not a lot of good luck so far.....

Did finally get a response and looks like you almost have to go through an "interview" process to download things.....first they want you to download 1.2 and then depending on that, they will make other things available to you instead of everything at once.  Although not really optimal, I'll certainly try working through it but hopefully it does not become too much work.

Regardless they gave me links to a torrent...and simply no luck downloading the files.  Tried multiple torrent clients and can't get the thing to download.  I have enabled all of my security software to allow it so not sure what is going on.

I don't give up easy, but just not sure how much time I will invest in figuring this stuff out, especially since only step #1 :(

I bought and installed SF 1942 a few weeks ago and then contacted lockie to download STA 1.2 and I had no issues using BitTorrent. lockie asks you to try 1.2 for a while to make sure everything works well on your PC before donating to get 3.3. I guess he wants to make sure you don't waste your money on a mod that may have issues on your PC.

The installs for 3.3 are non-torrent and you need to download about 10 files. lockie lists the needed files in his PM to you. There are instructions on how to install them using JSGME and it was quite an easy process and worth the effort. The terrain mods are excellent and the amount of scenarios you get with 3.3 is incredible and then there's extra campaigns available for small donations.

The Youtube videos by Geoweb35 is what convinced me to finally buy the game in the first place.

Would love to have TrackIR for this game.

Although I can appreciate that, it has been extremely frustrating.  In communication with them but just piece by piece versus just providing me the full details.  At this point, I am losing hope that this is worth the time and effort.....no idea why this has been made so hard and I haven't even gotten to the point of actually installing anything.

That is strange.  I clicked on your link and took me to page where the 1.2 link works fine.
I know that if you are unregistered the links on that page don't work.

That said, I'm still working on figuring out all I need to know to get these mods installed.  Doesn't look like an easy process.  :'(

Pretty intense first mission, granted I don't know what I am largely doing....however, I really love the commander mode.  I am not great at driving our shooting, but love giving out orders to everyone else in the crew to do stuff for me, while I still feel like I am strongly involved with the action.

Just did a quick mission where my troops had to assault a defensive line...uphill.  My tank was doing pretty well and I just took out an AT gun, but I pulled up too close after finishing it off.  Didn't notice the trench full of soldiers next to it and as I pulled my tank up, they blasted my commander out of his seat.

Really intense and fun and was really cool watching my other forces perform by themselves in a coordinated attack.

pretty frustrating after all that setup and exchange with the developer.  after i got 1.2 working as instructed by the developer, i sent the developer another message asking for the 3.3 files and donation information.  they then respond this morning that the files are no longer available right now and won't be until end of august.  i have no idea why during the multiple exchanges that was not stated up front when i clearly stated i was looking for the 3.3 files all along.

I think I will give up.

Bought the game for the 2nd time (Wingamestore - no install exe - just a zip including all the files ) and when I click the exe file (SF-1942.exe and/or shell.exe) nothing happens (no error, no black screen, just nothing).

Disabled anti virus, tried all compatibility settings, reinstalled directx, moving to different locations and still no luck (I am running Windows 7).

Don't think buying a 3rd time on Gamersgate will help.  A few years ago it ran on this PC.  I changed the graphic card (R9 380) and monitor but this I don't think this can cause the problem.

Might still try installing older Radeon drivers later (when this heatwave leaves us).

And also can't download STA 1.2 as there are no seeds available ...

Now looking at Tank Crew early access ...

Ok thanks just wish they would have said that.  He also mentioned the Japan thing but I don't know what that means and how that would work, and I think it only gets you 2.2 version.  Not a big deal, just was hoping for better communication.

When I posted on YouTube a few days ago the video creator responded saying "their is a free version available as Japanese if you know how to search". I did not respond.

Ok thanks just wish they would have said that.  He also mentioned the Japan thing but I don't know what that means and how that would work, and I think it only gets you 2.2 version.  Not a big deal, just was hoping for better communication.

This should give you 2.2 (was linked on a Japanese site - https://wikiwiki.jp/pzfr/Steel%20Tank%20Add-on)

Just confused what is meant by Japan...is the mod in that language?  Can it really be used on English version of game? Etc

I have a feeling it might mean Japanese tanks and an OOB. The mod has German, Russian, American, British and Japanese forces included.

Ah, I see....never thought of it that way.  Certainly more looking for German and such...might be best for me to stick with 1.2 and wait until severe back up

It is the normal version of the mod (v2.2), just hosted on a Japanese site.  All other sites just seem to have removed the links to 4shared.

I downloaded and installed them (using JSGME mod installer) with no issues.  The sound mod requires the password kharkiv42 to unzip.

Now, if I only could get Steel Fury to run on my PC I could tell if it works or not  :pullhair:.

Just my own two cents......if your into WWII tank sims and this interests you, I wouldn't be put off by some of the confusing processes, although they can certainly be frustrating since they are not exactly clear.  However, the developer is not from a big company, just something they are doing for the community so I need to cut them some slack.  I am just an impulse buyer so nowadays I just expect everything to be instant when I want it:)  Lockie has promptly contacted me many times so he has good service, just the communication isn't as clear, but absolutely is doing his best.  When I was able to actually do the install for 1.2, the steps were actually very easy once I understood them.

I played a number of battles yesterday and I really enjoyed it and that was with an older version...can't wait until I am able to try with the newest stuff.

So actual game question....like how you can order your platoon/troops around but seems like you can only order them all to do the same thing as a group command.  Is there anyway to issue orders to only select units?  I know I can make orders to my own tank, but wasn't sure if I could give different orders to the other vehicles and infantry under my command.  For example, I might want half of my troops to go right, while the other to go left or something like that.

I hate to post this, but I have to recommend that nobody donate for this mod through paypal until an issue gets sorted. I made two small donations last week and PayPal has flagged my account by placing limitations on how I can use it. They say this for my security, but they want me to provide some pretty ridiculous information and documentation in order to restore my account to full access, which I think is really unreasonable. I have not yet confirmed that it has to do with the mod, but it is the only "unusual" transaction I've made with the account...unusual in that it was sending money to an individual located in a foreign country.

I'm not suggesting that there is anything about this mod that is fraudulent, but there is something about these guys, or their location in the world that PayPal does not like. I'll post more info. when I have it. I'm on hold with PayPal now.

I haven't paid anything for the mod (as I can't get Steel Fury to run on my PC) and I also received a PayPal notification yesterday.

In my case it was because over the years the amounts deposited on my account surpassed a certain number (the deposits were made by myself so I could use the account to pay on line).
When I provided prove of address and linked my bankaccount full access will be restored (limited access is not very limited : I can do everything but close my account).

So I could be wrong but I don't think the limitation has anything to do with your donations to the Steel Fury mod site.

There are no download locations. You have to go to the forum and PM the mod maker and make a "donation". He then responds with the download links/codes. The latest version of the mod is 3.4. I have 3.3.

Of course. I was just recalling earlier in the thread about how the dev wanted people to try 1.2 or 2.2 first, then upgrade to the latest -- but getting those earlier ones started getting wonky.

So I could totally understand him stopping that since then.

I'll get around to checking with him soon.

To anyone who is looking for the STA mod, its undergoing a reorganization and will be known upon release as "ITM" or Iron Tank Mod.

That's cool.  With steel fury on steam, it would be cool if the payware mod dev had a freeware mod workshop version to seemlessly use.  With il2 tank crew out, I'm more than satisfied with wwii tanking.  All the hoops to jump through with this guys payware mod means a no play for me.

+1, a much under-appreciated tank sim IMHO. I had an old copy long ago and far away...I think I played on Vista...  Back then, it only had three tanks to drive.  Glad to see the game has grown. Can't beat the price, even for a 12 year old game. But wondering how it has aged compared to more recent sims.

Might grab it to compare to the tank sim called "tank crew". Always wanted to see the infantry you guys mention here in action.

Post by: Skoop on August 26, 2020, 05:28:03 PM
The infantry just looks like the infantry in graviteam, it's a very similar engine as these guys all worked together at some point.  Tank crew made this irrelevant for me.  If the steam version had seemless workshop mods to use I'd probably give it a whirl.  You guys do realize many of the il2 box mp servers run capture the flag missions where the tank crew owners fight on the ground with flight sim guys fighting in the sky over head.  Keeps it fresh when you run out of the canned campaign missions.

Just reading this thread now and to re-inforce particularly Jarhead's helpful information, if you are wary of the payware option or 4Shared, but still want to get an excellent, free, modded package for Steel Fury, with many additional driveable AFVs and numerous extra missions, and which incidentally I have working with the Steam version of SF, you have TWO options:

1. The STA 1.0 mod - follow the instructions and links in GodZilla1985's Reddit post here :

https://www.reddit.com/r/GraviteamTactics/comments/43ul85/steel_fury_tank_sim_and_how_to_get_started/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/GraviteamTactics/comments/43ul85/steel_fury_tank_sim_and_how_to_get_started/)

The links are to mediafire:

https://www.mediafire.com/folder/tawqydkci66dd/sta#ravfyazzvrlrx

or

2. The STA 2.2 mod - visit the previously-mentioned Japanese SF wiki site (Edge does a fine job of translating its pages) and use the links and guidance on the home page:

https://wikiwiki.jp/pzfr/Steel%20Tank%20Add-on

The content is in English, including the extra mission briefings, no need to worry, and while it does have some Japanese Army kit and missions...

...but that's on top of and not instead of the Eastern Front, NW Europe and N African content, like this, some of which is unique to this package I believe:

I'd recommend option 2 which is somewhat more up-to-date and includes an extra Japanese Community Mod mission package, but you must be prepared to supress any objections to having a handful of 'what if?' missions built for not merely unfinished projects like the Maus and E-100...

..and prototypes like the machine-gun-laden IS-7...

...but also 'fake tanks' like the E-79 from Sony's 'Panzer Front'...

I was a donor from the early days of the payware option and so also have an STA 3.4 install, which has subtly better visuals, somewhat better AI (I think) and some unique content of its own. The modest donation is a way of repaying the effort of those who made most of what's also free, as well as getting access to the newest version and that unique content, which is still being added to.

That may well be the best "first post" I have ever seen!

I purchased Steel Fury when it first came out and have never played it (as with so many other games).  I may have to try installing it on my new computer and figuring out how to mod it.  I vaguely remember that it took a lot of finagling to update and mod.

Thanks for the friendly welcome guys and sorry about the oversized pics, which caught me out too.

Hopefully these downsized ones will be better:

This Panther A is I think an updated version which comes with the 3.X version of the STA mod. Despite having 3.X for a while, I stuck with 2.X because in 3.X, you can no longer read the briefing and look at the map until after the mission starts playing. But many mission makers now deal with this by putting the briefing, and possibly some sort of map, into the mission intro screen, which you can read at leisure, before the action begins.

Whichever version of the STA mod you go for, modding SF is as simple as:

1. installing SF, clean, and if desired setting your preferences like screen res, image quality and difficulty, and checking it all works;
2. downloading all the components listed for your desired version of STA;
3. running the widely-used Jonesoft Generic Mod Enabler inside SF, to create a MODS folder therein (2&3 not needed for Steam version as JSGME is included);
4. unzipping the components you downloaded into the SF JSGME MODS folder;
5. enabling the mods in the exact order indicated for the STA version you are using;
6. running the 4GB patch on two files (starter.exe and shell.exe) - after enabling the base STA mod since it replaces these files.

SF doesn't like Nvidia anti-aliasing (results in corrupted graphics if applied in NCP) so Nvidia Inspector is used instead, to set a specific value for AA Compatibility (000012C1) which then enables AA to be applied in an Nvidia Inspector (not NCP) profile for SF (which profile must be linked to the file shell.exe, not starter.exe).

The process is described in the Japanese wiki site in more detail here (again, MS Edge will translate well): https://wikiwiki.jp/pzfr/%E3%82%B2%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A0%E3%81%AE%E5%A7%8B%E3%82%81%E6%96%B9

I think STA3.4 doesn't need this, as, like Steel Armour Blaze of War, it introduces its own AA setting (called 'Smoothing' in the Options menu, IIRC). Similarly I don't think 3.4 needs the 4gb patch (step 6 above).

My 3.4 install doesn't use my Steam version of SF but I've no reason to suppose it isn't compatible.

There are older SF mods (SPM and NTA) which might still be locatable somewhere on the interweb but they have been entirely surpassed by the STA version.

The main downsides of SF are somewhat limited platoon control (and nearly all of what you can do, can only be done from the map screen, there are no hotkeys eg for formation changes); verbal target indications are hard to follow unless you leave the subtle target markers and/or the turret direction indicator turned on; and your AI platoon-mates tend to want to charge the enemy if you let them off the leash at all. There's a huge number of single missions (there's even one for a motorcycle & sidecar IIRC!) but relatively few campaigns. SABOW was the next big step forward in these areas from Graviteam, but is relatively un-modable and so is still limited to its original scope...although within that, it is a tanksim in the Steel Beasts class, but with better visuals and dynamic campaigns.

I believe the site where you could get this mod is gone.

I found an alternative download for STA 3.4 : https://il2freemodding.createaforum.com/index.php/topic,2125.0.html

Direct link to Google Drive location : https://drive.google.com/uc?id=10y-Do4_WtbJ4dej80qRvvfP3nVp7rwyj&export=download  (12 GB)

If there still is a way to get it while supporting the developer let me know and ignore those links.
If not get it while it's available.

I've been trying to communicate with the mod team since April or May of last year. The last email I received was to check back in July. I haven't received any responses to any of my emails since. I do have access to the new forum though, so I'll reach out to mechanic again and let him know some of the grogheads want to know how to acquire the most current version of ITM.

Just want to chime in not about this mod in particular but on constructive criticism.

I love mod makers in general.  A lot of them are passionate about history, gaming, and creating experiences that merge the two together.  When I was younger and not fully sensitive to mod makers heavy work load in bringing their creations to us I used to slam them on just about anything that annoyed me with their mod.

Today I want to apologize for all of the negative non-constructive criticisms I've ever made to all mod makers.  I know now that it is always better to build up with words of encouragement while at the same time gently pointing out errors to mod makers.

Listen up random people from around the world who keep PMing me,  I have no affiliation with the mod team.  Back in February,  I just happened to have been in communication with them and while I had their attention, I offered to see if I could get them to register some of our interested members here. They seem to be very picky about who they let into their forums. I have no control over their registration process and do not want to become an annoyance to them by PMing every time some random dude registers here just to PM me for access.. Stick around, post in our forums for awhile and maybe the next time I talk to them, I'll see if they will open access to new members.

If you have an interest post here in this thread. If you've been participating here and I get to know you, like I said, maybe, next time I speak with the mod team, I will ask them to consider registering new members.

Thanks.

Listen up random people from around the world who keep PMing me,  I have no affiliation with the mod team.  Back in February,  I just happened to have been in communication with them and while I had their attention, I offered to see if I could get them to register some of our interested members here. Hi

I'm new to this forum and I'm one of those "random people" that has PM:ed you.  ;)
I'll stick around and hope you can pass on my "application" sometime in the future.

I've mostly been modding flight sims until now, but I made my military service in an armoured regiment in Sweden called P6.

My modding site has been online for 19 years by now:
