Title: Pirate games
Post by: acctingman on March 26, 2021, 09:19:53 AM
I've been watching this TV series about pirating and it's got me thinking about a pirate game, but I know nothing about what's out there.

Looking for something with some naval fighting (nothing overly complicated), loot plundering and the ability to trade/sell off your looted plunder.

Let me know if you have any suggestions while I work on my google-fu!

Thanks

Tempest comes to mind.  I have it, but haven't played it much.  Goes on sale every so often.

Good to see you, man. Been too long!

Hope all is well.

How about Port Royal 4?

The Golden Age of Pirates

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag begins in 1715, when pirates established a lawless republic in the Caribbean and ruled the land and seas. These outlaws paralyzed navies, halted international trade, and plundered vast fortunes. They threatened the power structures that ruled Europe, inspired the imaginations of millions, and left a legacy that still endures.

Sid Meier's Pirates!

Sail the Caribbean, marauding all on the high seas or ally your ship and crew as a privateer in search of riches - the life you choose is up to you.

Tempest includes some fantasy content :

Tempest is a Pirate Open World Action RPG where you rove the seas across three continents filled with dozens of colonies and forts, hundreds of quests and countless ships to plunder. Customize your ship, trade, challenge fellow pirates and face terrible mythical monsters such as Kraken and Leviathan.

^Black Flag is a great game - the ship to ship combat and bombardment of shore batteries and forts is epic.

Naval Action PVE (vs the AI only) server may give you some joy if you like the age of sail fighting aspect. Compared to a real simulator it is simple enough.
However their are not many RPG elements in naval action. It's all about your ships and trading. Capturing and looting enemy ships and building new ships.

There is a new game by the makers of naval action coming that will be amazing for privateers and is single player focussed though. Called Sea Legends. It's been in development for at least a year now and is advertised as an "18th Century Naval and Pirate RPG."

I think that Port Royale 3 might be a better option.

Pirates of the Caribbean (POTC) with the New Horizon Mod.

POTC originally by Disney but is in reality "Sea Dog by Akella".  Pirates Ahoy group take their Pirate games seriously and very active.   :arr:

This is a good game (with mods added) - sail around a realistic Caribbean map with realistic sea encounters, even down to trying to make out flags through your telescope. Lots of buying/selling/upgrading crews whilst at port, plus sword fights. Some of the more realistic mods make sea battles a little "slow" but that's because they are fairly realistic with good use of wind/sails etc. You can stick to arcade type battles if you wish. Lots of mod add ons (Aubrey/POTC etc) & additional ships. Quite an old game but I'm fairly sure it would run on most systems (been a while since I played it) due to extensive modding - definitely worth a look. (Look for the City of Abandoned Ships version which is I think the most recent)

I always get confused with this Akela pirate game.  Steam has several versions, hard to tell which one is the most current.  I've played the city of abandoned ships, it was cool but no way do I want to fiddle with mods these days.

Maybe red dead redemption goes pirates might be a game that rock star should make.

Like Des, I play a naval action which is all sailing and ship combat but from the pvp side of the game.  It's a sailing sim mmo, think eve online but in sailing ships instead of space ships.  As epic as naval action is, I can't recommend the pvp side as it's very intense and punishing for new players....you have to have the stomach for it, but also very rewarding when you win because of the challenge.

Where do people get the vanilla game from?  Doesn't seem to be available on Steam or anywhere else, I could only find a rather sketchy looking download on ThePirateBay - funny enough :arr:

Judging by the listed release dates, To Each His Own is the most recent instalment.  I picked it up and most of the DLC with some steam bux I got from a refund.

YES!  RDR2 already has pretty good physics for shooting holes in boats and sinking faster based on the number of holes.

In my defense, I've been a bit under the weather lately.  :-[
