Title: Valley of Tears on HBO Max
Post by: Gusington on November 28, 2020, 08:21:08 PM
New dramatic series on the 1973 Yom Kippur War, from the Israeli perspective. Just watched the first episode in Hebrew with English subtitles and it is very well done. If you're interested in relatively modern Middle Eastern history, armor or hot chicks, you will enjoy.

Side note: the show made me curious as to what kind of main battle tank the Israelis fielded before the Merkava (1979) - but I'm not sure what is portrayed in this series.

Upgraded Centurions, I believe.

^You're right. Looked up what a Centurion looks like and its exactly what is portrayed in the show. Just watched the 2nd episode and it is consistently good. 10 episodes total to HBO Max from Israeli distribution:

I'd watch it just to see the tanks

Watched first three episodes and so far really good. The SFX are a bit low budget at times, but the tank action feels authentic. Both how the crew interacts and how the tanks acts as a team. There is a storyline that feels a bit too upbeat in the beginning which distracted some, but not a dealbreaker.

^Yeah, agreed. Hard to put my finger on what exactly looks a little low budget but I see it too, occasionally. The acting is great and the history is epic, though. Need to watch some more this weekend.

In college in Oregon in the Mid 1970s, I met a few people who were there on the Israeli side.  They had some pretty gruesome stories and -- as most of you probably know -- there comes a point where people just have to tell you about the most horrible things they have ever seen.

Their stories were hard to beat for gruesome detail, but not as enlightening as what I heard in NYC working in medical fraud detection in the early 1990s.  One guy (a brilliant fraud detector) who had fought in the wars around the Central African republic always told his war stories with pauses for "What would you have done."  I generally died horribly in his version of events (crocodiles got me twice!)...he had a brilliant sense of humor and he survived so there you go.
Another fellow had some complicated stories about how to do a mutiny in Czechoslavakia in 1947....though his best stories were about pursuing American girls who always had some weird flaw (according to him) such as "You know...she said she had been reincarnated."

Oh well...I'm sure I'll try to watch the show.

The Wife and I were in Israel in 2009, as I've stated before, and I got to meet some of the Vets who were in the '73 war and lots of other fights. Clearly Heroes all but pretty reluctant to talk a lot about their experiences. Which is understandable. I think we have the notion those were almost bloodless victories but certainly they weren't.

So I watched the first two episodes on the  Hollywood Suite movie channels in Canada this past Sunday. The first 30 minutes were a bit slow as the characters were built up, but once the war started, the fighting with the CGI was pretty good with pretty realistic tank fighting. I will be watching the rest of the series.

Just switched to Spectrum yesterday from Frontier and Spectrum includes HBO Max for free.  Just went up and added the HBO Max app on our Samsung SmartTV's and will be spending this weekend watching.  Thanks for the series referral!
