I was looking for something semi-lite but enjoyable to play with my son this weekend.  We're thinking Force on Force or maybe some Boothill miniatures but I still need to put together some buildings and do painting and blah, blah, blah (that's the problem with mini's).  At any rate, I happened upon this one some how on the Geek and thought that I would share.  It is a free PnP game that I had not seen before (came out in '06):

Get to the Chopper!!!

A semi-comedic look at Ahnolds classic "Predator".  Reading the comments which are mostly quite favorable, it's almost like a small game of Ogre (tank).

I have the files loaded on a flash drive and will be stopping by FedEx/Kinko's on my way home to give this a print.  I'll post a mini AAR (if it's worth the effort).

Oh, and there is a VASSAL module for it in case you don't want to spend the ink or time printing it first:

Ok, here's another one for you all (or y'all as the case may be):

Outlaws: Adventures in the Old West

I mentioned going old school with Boot Hill in the post above.  Scratch that, going new school with this one instead.  Check out the details in the game, including the excellent graphics.  Great job David Murray!

I've played with the demo of Outlaws, I really like it. Nice simple solo system too.

Been meaning to try out the other one you posted but have a few things in my build queue.

At the moment I really like the look of WWII: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/134061/wwii

Though I'm probably going to make a few games from Philip Sabin's book which I've been reading. http://www.kcl.ac.uk/sspp/departments/warstudies/people/professors/sabin/simwar.aspx

isn't that the one that's been tracking in the CSW Wargame Counter Design folder?

I don't know what the hell they're talking about half the time in that folder over there, but I know that David Murray is quite active at posting in there.

I'm really surprised that Victory Point Games or somebody hasn't picked up on Outlaws, it's a really polished game by all appearances and the artwork is really top notch.

Well I printed out the kit for "Get to the chopper!" and constructed the super-sized version of the map.  Nice looking.  I picked up a miniture for $4 that was as close to the Predator as I could get it.  It's an alien but it looks more like the martians in "Mars Invades" than it does Predator but so what, it's a miniature at least!  I used some modern era 20mm mini's for Dutch, Mac, Blaine and Billy.  I read the easy to learn rules to my son and we set up and began the first game.  I was playing as the Predator, my son had the humanoids.

These will be brief because frankly, the game is very brief- 20 minutes tops.

The first game had me as the Predator on the aggressive side.  I could be I figured, I have 5 hit points to each of their 2.  Plus, I have that funky camouflage and a rocket launcher on my shoulder.  The one thing that I didn't count on was my (as per usual) sucky dice/die rolls.  I pretty much whiffed each attack and got blasted by clamores and stabbed by Macs knife.  When I tried to retreat so that I could use my medi-kit, I whiffed on each attempt to heal points.  Dutch ran up and put the final coup d'état on Predator.  I did manage to cap Mac but that was it.  Very ugly for me.

Game 2 and I was a bit more, ok, a lot more cautious this time.  I avoided Macs claymore mines and took him out.  Looking good so far.  Humanoids kept advancing towards the chopper and I followed in pursuit.  I managed a hit on Dutch which put him in to "boy scout" mode (toughens him) but I was able to take him out with just a hit or two on the Predator.  Billy had made it to the chopper by this time.  On my turn, I entered his hex, attempted a melee and whiffed.  Billy needed a 2-6 to climb up the rope to the chopper for the win but rolled a 1!  For the killing slash on Billy I rolled and .... whiffed.  Billy didn't miss his climb roll and that secured the game for the humanoids but Predator was still out for blood as there was Blaine still in the jungle.  I was able to close with the enemy and took him out in rather short order.

So, two wins for the humans (my son), all told, a couple of hours to cut out the map, learn the game and then play it twice.  Very much recommended - I wager it beats that silly Space Hulk game that you PC guys lost your shirts on.   ;D

The redesign of the classic SJ Metagame Melee of man-to-man fighting is IMHO worth looking into.   Available for download, here...http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/50323/kwanchais-melee-redesign (requires BGG account).

Now, the problem is, how to divide five Afghans from three mules and have two Englishmen left over.

Barbarian Prince was a lot of fun back in middle school. Dwarfstar offers it for download here:

I had printed it out a few years ago and tried it out, even did a session report on BGG for it (http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/20850/session-report) (holy hell, 2004? Err, okay, nine years ago).

Grav Armor was the bomb-shizzle, as long as you can get past the garish map graphics

in fact, most of those games on the Dwarfstar site are quite good.

Outpost Gamma was quite good, too - basically Rorke's Drift in space.
