Title: The Hunters
Post by: Nefaro on November 18, 2013, 10:11:27 PM
So.. GJK said he received shipping notification late last week.  Anyone else?

I show being charged after Friday but still no shipping notification Monday evening.  Perhaps they had quite a few to send out and I'm one of the last (per usual).  :-[

I've been looking forward to this one more than most of my many recent acquisitions.

Clarification: I received a notice that my card was charged (it was) on 11/14 but didn't receive a shipping notice.

Looking at the last GMT update, it says that:

"...that will allow us to ship the following two games starting this Friday, November 15:
C&C Napoleonics: The Austrian Army
No Retreat: The North African Front"

Then:

"We anticipate another P500 shipment probably about ten days after that one with these two games included:
The Dark Valley
The Hunters (Consim Press)"

So that would put the ship date for The Hunters on or around the 25th - about a week from today.

I stopped by Half Price Books today to look for a good U-Boat book but found none.  I had an ebook that I don't recall the name of but do remember that it was written by a former U-boat commander and translated to English.  I may have to resort to reading it on my tablet though I'd prefer a regular book.  I'll have to see what that ebook was.  Any other recommendations on a good read to get one in the mood for The Hunters?

I'd have to really dive deep into my library to find something to recommend.  If I can't come up with something, maybe someone could sub in for me as an advisor to help you out.

All I have in my library is Operation Drumbeat and Das Boot. Maybe someone else will dive in here with more suggestions.

Iron Coffins (http://www.amazon.com/Iron-Coffins-Personal-Account-Battles/dp/030681160X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384865622&sr=8-1&keywords=iron+coffins) is the book that I was thinking of.  It was a free Kindle download a while back and added it to my library but haven't begun to read it yet.

You're right.  We shouldn't torpedo another thread with ridiculous humor.  Let's get back to slinging dice, sink the puns, and let the wargaming surface above the depths of our otherwise pun-tastic depravity.

There's Clay Blair's two volume Hitler's U-boat War, the first volume of which is called The Hunters.  Blair was in US submarines in WWII, but his books on the U-boats are comprehensive and tell plenty of stories as well as doing some fundamental statistical analyses.

This is a pretty good testimonial:
QuoteWow!

I just finished my first game on Vassal. I didn't have the patience to wait for my hard copy of the game to arrive, so I started last Friday when the module was released and played a few sessions over the weekend and today. I started with a Type VIIA boat (U-30) in September '39 and managed to survive until January '41. An RAF ASW bomber sent my Type VIIC (U-301) to the bottom off the coast of Spain, but not before I had sunk 118,900 tons of Allied shipping, including the Royal Oak BB. I managed to earn a Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves before my career was cut short.

What an engrossing and fun gaming experience this is. It is not simply a dice-rolling fest. There are crucial decisions to be made which affect success, failure and even survival. It is possibly one of the best purpose-built solitaire games I've ever played. I know one play isn't enough to base a valid opinion on, but all I can say right now is - wow! Bravo Greg Smith and all connected with this game's production.

Will have to fire up the VASSAL module and give it a go.

Yeah, I'm thinking that it's about time to at least start reading the rules.  The physical copy of the game should be here as early as next week some time and the VASSAL module is ready now with a ZunTzu gamebox coming (getting updated).  This game sounds like it would make for a good AAR on Grogheads here.

For anybody else, you can still get the game at the P500 price for a few more days; $28.00:

I'm feeling confident that this is going to be the new "B-17 Queen of the Skies".  Actually, I think that it'll be better with more things to do (decision making).

Sounds good.... something like we all leave the same port on the same start date and all sail to the same patrol area and see who can get the most tonnage?

That sounds like fun.  Maybe keep some running posts of the patrol logs for comparisons.  Also to see who can live the longest.

Yeah exactly! Have you seen the "actual" U-boat style log on BGG? Someone have made one that can be edited to resemble real uboat logs.

Dang, he gets it even cheaper than what I P500'd it for!

I'm driving home now and I have a gut feeling that my copy will be on my doorstep.  If it isn't or it doesn't appear by the weekend, I'm going to start a game using the newly released ZunTzu game box for it.

I've never used Vassal or ZunTzu.  I've debated picking one of those up at some point, for when I didn't want to put something out on the table for long periods.  What are the differences between the two, and their costs?
Title: Re: The Hunters
Post by: Staggerwing on December 13, 2013, 08:25:48 AM
AFA the differences, I'm just a n00b as well but VASSAL has a boatload of customizable features such as having your pieces step down in strength as they take damage and show that in the counter itself and whatnot while ZunTzu is a bare-bones single-image counters and map kinda deal.

As far as cost goes: FREE!!! both of them!
Title: Re: The Hunters
Post by: GJK on December 13, 2013, 08:53:53 AM
As stagger said, both of these tools are completely free so they really should be in your arsenal of gaming utilities.  VASSAL has far more support in the way of users and games that are available.  It is continually being updated with more features being added all the time.  Currently, VASSAL uses Java to run.  I've had no problems with it whatsoever, but some are understandably leery of Java.  VASSAL in of itself is not difficult to install and to start using.  There is a learning curve however if you want to start making your own modules.  VASSAL support solitaire play, online (live) play via their central servers (nothing to register for) and pbem.  VASSAL offers the ability to automate several things; automatically place damage markers, move pieces to map locations, etc.  It all depends on what the module designer puts in to it.

ZunTzu (www.zuntzu.com (http://www.zuntzu.com)) has the slickest interface (I think) with nice zoom features.  Jerome is the programer and even though he mentioned working on version 2.0 (that would include support for tablets), he's fallen quiet about it for some time.  Still, the current version works wonderfully.  Installing it is easy via a browser (uses .net I believe) and making "game boxes" for it is really very simple.  ZT only supports solo and live play though (no pbem).  Jerome's philosophy for ZT was to make a virtual copy of a physical boardgame meaning that you have to pick the pieces off the countersheet.  You have to shuffle and deal the cards.  You roll virtual dice.  Nothing is automated but everything that comes with your game is there for you.

Here's some screenshots of Bill Barrett's "official" gamebox for The Hunters:  http://talk.consimworld.com/WebX?14@@.1dd39396/595 (http://talk.consimworld.com/WebX?14@@.1dd39396/595)

Thanks guys.  For some reason I had thought that Vassal cost a bit and didn't know much about ZunTzu.  The latter looks pretty cool, especially being the dice & card whore that I am.  The IE browser install is a bit odd.

I may give this a spin this weekend if the game doesn't miraculously show up tonight.  I still have Picket Duty on the table but I'm waiting to see if I can get some clarification on something before continuing my campaign in that one.

Still no notification from GMT and UPS shows nothing coming.    :'(

I've rarely known NWS to be fast.  They're nice for saving a few bucks if you're not in a hurry to get something.  Pretty sure they have it shipped to them from the manufacturer first, then turn it around.  My last order took about 2 weeks to get here and that isn't unusual.  Nothing against Chris & NWS.. just know that it can take some time.

Not sure how they handle pre-order stuff, though.

True. I am also still waiting for my copy of Ogre: Designer's edition from NWS. I got a shipping notice on that one but it's the 'Electronic Shipping Info Received' one that indicates the Post Office is waiting to get it and ship it out.

Evidently GMT uses your Order # as a shipping reference number with UPS.

So if you had yours shipped via OOPS-Man, you can use the "Track By Reference" tab on their website tracker.  Enter your GMT order number from you account page there, narrow down the shipping dates to December, and enter your destination zip code and it should narrow it down enough to find yours (if it shipped).

Turns out mine was shipped Friday and won't be here until Thursday (probably dark evening).  ;)  Considering I was in the last of the bunch to be shipped, I'd expect many of you to have it by then, or earlier.

Mine just showed up this afternoon.

Oddly enough, the 'OOPS-Man' seems to be running more efficiently than they were 2 weeks ago, in my area.

I'm pretty sure they offered both options when you checked out.

As I said, you can check the GMT order number for it on their website under your login.  Then enter that in UPS' tracking thing as detailed above to find out when yours should be arriving.  Or just sign up for the UPS thing that will show you everything currently coming to your home...

Since GMT evidentally doesn't notify about it's shipping with any regularity, I decided to check that way to make sure it was shipped.  Don't wanna be waiting for weeks only to find out that my order disappeared in the bustle.

As for the game it looks pretty spartan, with little embellishment, after playing Picket Duty recently (which has some wonderful artwork & components).   But it looks like fun and despite the length of the rulebook it looks pretty simple to learn.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I've had my eye on the third printing of The Hunters for a while, now. It's only $31 for a P500 order. But, it's been at that status for a while and I cannot find any good information on whether or not GMT thinks it's going to 'make the cut.'

I only have a vague idea of how P500 works (I've never invested in one). I'd love to back this, but am not to sure about the wait time. One month? Ten months? I'm guessing that's impossible to determine as the publisher has to wait for X number of copies to be pre-ordered (500?) before sending it to print and shipping them out. Is that right?

Regardless, if anyone has heard anything new on this please post here. The newest threads I can find online are a few weeks old and don't posit anything regarding its status.

You are correct about the P500. No ones knows when or if the product will reach the magic number, which isn't alway 500... don't ask.  :P

It be days, it could be years.... but you don't actually get charged until it's actually shipping.

Great game. You should be able to find gently used copies of the previous editions.....

Thanks, Barth. My luck, I'll have $30 in the bank when they decide to move forward and charge me $31, so it'll end up costing me $61. Lol...

GMT games tend to linger much longer on their P500 than say MMP.  I've had the reprint of "Fields of Fire" on P500 for a couple of years now and it's met its number- they keep pushing back the print date on it.  I'm with Barthheart- I'd pick up a used copy as I don't think the 3rd printing is going to change/add anything (but I may be mistaken).  This guy has been trying to sell his (new) copy for a while now and it may still be available:

GMT's production schedule has been extremely backed up for awhile.

Their monthly (or bi-monthly?) newsletters have been talking about how backed up they are for the past year or more.  They reportedly just moved to a larger location.  But I get the secret impression that their manpower has also been overwhelmed, or there is too little being delegated.  Not enough decision-making people to keep many of their metaphorical production plates spinning at once??

As for The Hunters, it's enjoyable in short stretches.  I think the sequel, Silent Victory is a bit better.

Being a Reprint P500, GMT may give it the go-ahead if it doesn't quite make the 500 mark.  They've already done all the pre-production heavy lifting, therefore much of that extra cost doesn't need to be made up.  IIRC, they did this with some other reprint awhile back.

I guess I'm just wanting to know what their number is at right now. 100? 350? 499?

Makes sense that they'd just send a reprint order to the printer. I mean, as long as they make a profit on each of those $31 sales, and I'm sure they do if they do it in bulk, but less than that and who knows.

I've seen copies of The Hunters online but for a lot more than $31. I do like Silent Victory a lot, so if this is less of a game I might take it off my radar. I like the extras in SV, such as promotions, decorations, and so forth.

It's almost exactly like Silent Victory, but with the different (smaller) U-boats & North Atlantic of course.  But SV had some little improvements here & there, and better components, being the second in the series.

If you played one, you've pretty much played them both.

I saw it for a ridiculous amount on Amazon before...but as was said, those 3rd party sellers tend to really jack up the price.

If I can find it for cheap, I might go for it...I dunno. I have my hands full with SV right now.

I have been playing The Hunters a LOT over this past week..enough to run through eight complete campaigns.

Two of my Kapitans have lasted the entire war, most, sadly, have not.

KPlt Friedrich Bader, this last campaign, have has the most remarkable run. Unprecedented, and inexpressibly odd and unusual that it borders on the Twilight Zone. Let me explain.

Starting in 9/39, before his sub (VIIB) was sunk in 7/42, he sank the following:
--232,200 tons of shipping.
--The CL Dauntless, the CA Sussex, the CVE Dasher, the CV's Hermes and Courageous, and the Battleship Hood. SIX!! capital ships.

I just kept rolling capital ships, in about every other mission. Just remarkable.

Once you get used to the system, you can crank through patrols very, very fast. A real sense of progression.

Not sure if I want The Hunted, 1943-1945. I am having a hard enough time surviving as it is.

I keep thinking I want it myself, but I have U-Boat Leader from DVG, which is a pretty good game in and of itself. If Hunters is like SV, well...I guess it's more of a thematic appeal than anything else. I might eventually get it if the situation is right (e.g. stupid cheap price and I'd be an idiot to pass on it).

I'll sell you my copy.  It's just not really my thing.  I guess it's similar to Target for Today in that you're basically creating a narrative by rolling on various charts and tables in order to tell the story of each mission.  There's just not enough player choice in the game for my tastes.

So...I'm playing The Hunters.

KPLT Kurt Blumentrit, in my VIIA. Crew JUST got promoted to veteran. I rolled poorly, and they were still Green as of 2/42.

I rolled lucky, chose the Med as my operating area. I had completed 7 patrols, was on my 8th. Not a bad career, 81k total damage, with TWO light cruisers, the Southampton and the Newcastle (both 9100 tons).

Tooling along, looking for a convoy or a fat merchie, and I roll boxcars. Random event. Ok, cool! Maybe I get a "Hals and Beinbruch!" Nope...I roll a "2". Damn! Man overboard.

To get to this point, I need to roll a 12, then a 2, on 2D6. The chances of this are 1/36 x 1/36, or one in 1,296. OK, it happened.

....aaaand I see that my Kplt is in peril! If I roll a "1", he is the one lost overboard in a freak wave. Surely this cannot happen...SCHEISSE! I think that this is the spelling.

And the dear Kapitan sinks screaming below the waves, and dies a sailor's death. Statistically, I can roll on the encounter chart and expect this to occur one every 7,776 attempts.

Part of me is appalled that this would happen. Part of me says...cool! It happened!

I keep thinking I want to get The Hunters, but with Silent Victory on my shelf...I think it's just a matter of taste. SV is supposed to be more polished than The Hunters, but The Hunters has a lot of appeal. So too does Compass Games' Raiders Of The Deep, which I really would like to try out.

I have both.

There isn't much difference between them other than the setting.  From my few playthroughs of each, I think Silent Victory is a bit more challenging as a whole.

If I only had SV, and knew how very similar they are, I'd use the money I was thinking of spending on The Hunters towards a different game system.  Once you've played one, you've pretty much played the whole series.

It's at a better price point than The Hunters, which I've seen from $100 on up. I would love to have it but man, it's too close to the source material. I admit too that playing as an Axis (err, Central Powers) entity would be interesting, so this will scratch that sorta itch I think.

...but I've seen it for upwards of $120 or so there.

That could just be third-party gougers though. Not sure if the wargamer market would bear that.

You could always try over in the Wargamer's Market group on Facebook. I rue the day I joined that group. So many awesome games get posted there every day. I made a few quick sales myself with some older titles I bought way back in the day.
