Title: Grogheads Steam Group - Friday Night Rumble
Post by: Bison on November 15, 2012, 06:24:10 PM
OK.  I've decided to be proactive here and start up the first weekly Grogheads Steam Group http://steamcommunity.com/groups/grogheads Friday Night Rumble.  The plan is to start small and work our way up to something bigger and better.  Not sure what the hell that means exactly.

Grogheads Friday Night Rumble (16NOV)
Left 4 Dead 2
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/grogheads#events
If you want to lock in a slot please post on the event calendar.  The priority for playing will go to those who sign up.  If we have 4 or less, we'll just play a normal campaign.  If we have more then we can either do a versus game, with Groghead zombies taking on Groghead survivors, or have two groups playing a campaign.

I'm open to what we as a group would do the following weeks.  Either more L4D2 or another FPS game or we could be more ambitious and start a Warlock game.

If we work out a plan then I'll go ahead and schedule events out several weeks in advance so folks can plan accordingly.

Oh and it'll start at 10 pm EST.  Not sure what the hell that equates to in Euroland but I think 2 am and breakfast time for surfers in Hawaii.

It's ok TCT.  Sign up and if you cannot make it it's no big deal.  It's not like we're some hardcore group who bans people for missing the weekly raid or something.

IIRC a fan site I hit that listed all the melee weapons confirmed they all do identical damage. The sword, however, has a dashing aspect that I have trouble passing up.

Also not to be missed: you unlock an award for pushing back five (or ten?) clowns (and if you pay close attention when you push a clown his nose honks).

All in all it was a successful debute of the Grogheads Friday Night Rumble event.  Quick recap.

We were kicking ass until the last battle on the Passage.  We died about 10 million times trying to fill up the generator.  LB abandoned us and rightfully so.  Tent was leading everyone to their doom.  Gus was doing something.  I had something riding my head at all times.  Somehow the three worst L4D2 players on planet earth managed to win but we didn't really.  Gus abandoned Tent and I to die while he made the get away.

Sent Jomni and SDR invites to play but they'd must have called it a night too.

Anyway not sure what next Friday will bring but I'm open to suggestions.  I think a L4D2 versus game would be pretty sweet.  Anyone else have some suggestions?

Someone will have to recon server status for one we can occupy for the evening.  We can do Red Orchastra but we'll need quite a few guys willing to throw down for the evening to make it fun.  At least 6 or so on a side I'd think for it to be interesting.  I assume you are talking RO1 and not RO2.

Well if we need six a side it may not be realistic. Back in the day though we were able to get 4 or 5 to a side for some COD 2 matches.

Any other suggestions? I'd play Warlock MP if there was interest [which I am sure there is]

You can flesh out the sides in RO2 with bots.  They are pretty much of the DERP school of AI but at least they populate the maps.

Red Orchestra 1 or 2, or Darkest Hour for me - though I'm guessing you're all mostly US-based, so your evening is well past my bedtime.  I know L4D2 is just four-player, so you can have a closed match, but are you that against joining a public server for RO?  They really 25 v 25 to work.  You can get on TS and form a squad - it's still a blast.

Anyone tried M&B Napoleon MP?  That's quite fun, especially if you do the "commander" mode - bit of tactical thinking required.

SDR: do you do RoF MP?

2000 - 2400 hrs GMT is my time slot for MP FPS/RoF on a Friday

We are totally blaming you for our failures now :)

For the record it was like this.  The rest of us were on voice chat trying to form some sort of plan.  Then all of the sudden LB would 'Leroy Jenkins' us and run off into a herd of zombies, so yes its his fault.   ;D  :P

Lots of death and horrible dying all around.  But hey I didn't kill any teammates by shooting them in the back of the head this time. :)

Below is a shot of how the night ended for us and is fairly telling on how the night went as a whole.  In the screenshot you see me getting choked by a smoker while being mobbed by a mass of zombies while my teammates lay dead or incapacitated.  To make matters worse in the back of the picture you see an open door with a nice warm and inviting light.  Thats the safe room and if one of us got to it the we would win the level.  So close...   :(

I haven't really played RO2 multiplayer since shortly after release.  I just think that whenever we pick a game for a Grogheads mulitplayer game that it meets two criteria.

1. People have it or access to it.
2. People are interested and will commit to playing.

That's why L4D2 has worked.  It really only requires 4 people and it's something alot of folks have and if not it's pretty cheap.  It's also why I've advocated for Team Fortress 2 in the past.  Not that it's a realistic game but it's free and fun to drop into for a few hours at a time.

Anyway.  Here's the suggestions so far:

L4D2 campaign/versus modes
Red Orchestra (1 or 2 not sure)
Warlock

I've tried, but I can never find a server that is both full and uses the rules/planeset I'd like.  I'd like full real or near full real with engine management relaxed but no icons and rolling plane sets.

Syndicate is OK but it always seems to devolve into Camels vs D VIIIs.

There's a great bundle pack from THQ on Amazon.

$10 for a bunch of games and well worth it just for Space Marine alone - which we should all get together and add to this list.

Also: a bit of housekeeping. I'm going to move this to the MP gaming thread.

Is RO 1 the same as Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, if so I have it but it is not installed.  Ya'll need to let me know if we are going to play it so I can download it.  It might take a while.  I also have TF2, Warlock, and ARMA II that I would be up for playing MP with you guys.  However, tonight I won't be around until late if at all so don't count on me today.

Too much info Gus, way too much.

I used to sleep in the raw, but now the missus says 'for gawds sake, put something on - you'll scare the cat'.

Very true! And that's coming from a cat person. I've been catless since the passing of my last two Old Ones and I keep thinking it's time to go to the animal shelter and recruit a new Feline Leader.

He was only 11 but had a very severe thyroid problem that they could never get under control.  He was loosing too much weight and all of his hair.  So in the end the vet just said there was nothing else to be done.  We had to put down one of the Siamese cats earlier this summer.  He had FIP and it was just becoming too much of an issue cleaning up after him.  So two cats were lost this year to health issues.  The other siamese is alive and kicking and has totally taken over the house well except the dog who loves to chase her.

Great game MD - although we only played a little co-op on-line, it was fun. Its even better now with the latest patches.

Good to know, bob.  My time is my own on the weekends and I game pretty much all day unless the girlfriend is on to do something.  I would be proud to hold up America's end for a go at you chaps.

Sorry to Bison, Stagger and W8 for the loss of their Feline Masters.  I love cats, but I've had dogs now exclusively for about ten years.  And I've been blessed with ones I got :-)  So, go get some new kitties from the shelter and make your life full again :-)

Very cool!  I would like that very much!!  After a couple hours of play, I find everything to be pretty standard fare, build the city, build the buildings that give you advanced units/upgrades/research, discover new knowledge (spells),conduct diplomacy.  Does it get any more difficult than that?  And do we have any more takers for MP?

Thats pretty much it. easy to get into, nothing really groundbreaking, just a game thats easy on the brain. MP just about the same, just a matter of going co-op or H2H or a mixture of both.

This upcoming week I should have more flexibility than usual because of the Thanksgiving holiday. I get out of work usually when you get on Bob...and then I have my domestic duty to tend to.

Weekends are more loosey-goosey and in the past few weeks I have sometimes been gaming with LB, Bison, SDR, Oche, Tent and some others to 2-3am some nights! Of course that's on the weekends (Friday + Saturday nights).

We'll figure something out. Plenty of Brits on here to hook up with anyway as you've been doing if we are just too distant in time.

Thumbs-up to that Gus. I guess that if we are determined enough to get a hook up to play, then we'll do it.

So far. as far as Warlock is concerned, the MP game that Geek, Huw and I started was co-op. What I think would be interesting is to have 4 players and form 2 opposed alliances, each of 2 players (obviously!) and battle it out in a kind of Axis-Allied situation. I think that could be a real fun gaming situation - perhaps Elf-Human vs Undead-Orc or whatever.

What time is it going to be gents?  Thursday I have Thanksgiving with my girlfriend and her family.  Friday is Thanksgiving here at my house with my family.  So, morning would be a better start time for me.  Even lunch time would be ok to get a couple of hours of turns in.  Any later than that and I'll have to be a no go or catch a late evening start time.

I'm going to be out of town so someone else will need to take the initiative to wrangle up the cats and start the MP lobby for the game.  It'll remain set at 10 PM but you all can arrange the time here.

Voice chat is very easy using STEAM chat.  One of us just invites everyone to a group chat and then we all just initiate voice chat.

I should be around after 10pm EST on Friday night.  Also I think we can only have 4 players for a MP Warlock game unless that has been changed in a patch.

I'm thinking there's going to be a contingent of folks wanting to play something other/in-addition-to Warlock.

Can we get some kind of breakout as to who-wants-what?

Some folks may have a couple of days off and will want to have some choices, methinks.

I never spent much time with Arma II. The interface is too clunky compared to Black Ops II.

I did some Space Marine recon last night.

The multiplayer game has changed a bit since last time I played.

First, there is new DLC, the most interesting of which is the Dreadnought DLC. It's currently 50% off for about $5 on Steam. I do not have it, but might spring for it if we collectively decide to resurrect Space Marine.

Speaking of resurrecting Space Marine, I looked around for MP games last night. Probably around 2100 or so (I forget the exact time). It was just little ole me seeking a MP game - no other gamers in sight. Seriously.

I don't mind some Space Marine, but if we're going to play it we've got to be Johnny-on-the-spot because it doesn't look like there will be any strangers roaming around to fill in the blank spaces if someone is a no-show.

But that works to our advantage - no douchebags will be possibly invading our space so we should be good. We can launch a private game and have the internet to ourselves. That sounds pretty good to me, so on that note I will leave you with this Inquisitorial devotional:

Believe lest your unbelief consume you.

I am ready for Space Marine. I also don't have the Dreadnought DLC but also don't have any problem getting it if I will be using it. Tonight possibly? Anyone around?

For whatever reason L4D2 was extra exhausting this evening.

I blame the turkey exhaustion.  I was definately not on top of my zombie killing game.

I got ridiculously tired after an hour. Has to be from all the kids running around and annoying sisters, sisters in law, etc.

If anyone is around tonight please post! There is of course no football tonight...even more of a reason to game.

My Warlock game tanked. I was having tech issues. Anyone still playing Space Marine?

That is an intense game - we were playing survival mode against hordes of Orks. Playing a warmup game about 1800 and then a solid slugfest at 2100, I'm done for the night :)

Good game 'Phro, Breezy and Bart. So good in fact that I got the elf DLC and the Armageddon DLC for Warlock just now.

Still would like to play some Space Marine...just got the Dreadnought DLC too.

An interesting start to a MP warlock campaign with MetalDog to day. I seem to be crammed into an island near the north edge and surrounded by mountains and a couple of other mages, so no contact with MD as yet.

Great fun, and a good chin-wag as we played. Looking forwards to continuing this - thanks MD!

If anyone wants to play Iron Front 1944, head over to SimHQ and check the forums there.  We play every Saturday at 1 pm PST/4 EST/ 9PM GMT.

My pleasure, bob!  I enjoyed the conversation as well :-)  The good news is, I have a pretty good starting position and copious amounts of resources.  The bad news is, I have two portals to other worlds located outside of my eastern two cities :-(
