Stardock have today announced Ashes of the Singularity (http://www.ashesofthesingularity.com/).
"Not an RTS battle, an RTS war"
Here's the FAQ (http://www.ashesofthesingularity.com/game/faq) - it's very interesting reading. The big deal about this game is that the game will scale from several units up to whole armies, with units becoming meta-units as you scale up.
There don't seem to be any videos yet but there are nice-looking screenshots on the website. What I'm personally most excited about is that it will come to Linux - this could be a major turning point for Stardock, and will hopefully mean GalCiv 3 on Linux as well as whatever else they make.
Very interesting idea. If they can really pull off the meta-unit thing this could be pretty good.
I think developers must be running out of names for their games, lol! At least it's innovative.
RTS? Bah.

Very small video on twitter from originpc of it running on DX11 and DX12:

This is the team that made the Nitrous engine that was being demoed a while back, and this is the game they have built on top of it.
Looking at the screenshots, it makes the scale of the Supreme Commander series seem downright modest by comparison. (Now just imagine what could be done with a 4x game that allowed space battles this size...!) :o
wow! this might be just my cup of tea!

Now you've created an infinite thread-recursion loop!!!! :D
I was just hoping for mods to merge the 2 threads...
Yeah, sounds like a good idea. This is all Boggit's fault!
I wanted to merge this earlier but on my phone it's almost impossible. Once I get to a proper computerI can do it.
Had to reopen this to announce that Ashes of the Singularity has been released on Steam early access for 20% off which puts the price at 39.99. It looks to be a mix of Supreme Commander and Company of Heroes. Anyone jumped on this yet?

I've had it for months, but haven't played too much. What I have experienced is positive though.
saw this - i have an unplayed sup com and sup com 2 on the HD - im going to give those a try first
I am a backer for this so I've had it for a while. It's great, a mix between SupCom and CoH is a good classification.
The scope is SupCom with LOTS of units and the economy is pretty much the same mechanic.
CoH in the sense that you have control points on the map over which you and the enemies fight.
The big 'Ongoing War' mode hasn't been available yet , only single skirmish matches on a select few maps.
The big war mode should tie in a strategic layer on top of the skirmish matches.
as a small unit tactical TBS kind of guy - is it the usual click fest whilst having no clue whats going on?

I don't find it click-festy at all. The units are pretty slow moving, lumbering, in fact. So this mechanic makes it pretty difficult to use the "rush" as a tactic.

What is the 'Ongoing War' mode?
It is called the Ascendency War and here is the blurb from the game's website:
"Ascendancy
In addition to individual planetary wars, there is a larger galactic war taking place in this part of the galaxy for control of key worlds. Controlling worlds provides resources and advantages that you can use in future conquests. However, this works for your enemy as well."
I have not been able to play it yet, though.
@UCG: The scope makes it clicky on Large maps, but as JH said; the pace of the game is not very quick. I'd say its on the slow side even. A medium map will easily suck up a few hours of your time.
The true difficulty is a mental one; like SupCom you quickly have multiple fronts and keeping track of everything while keeping you economy running is the big challenge.
This moved from Early Access to release today. Anyone played it?
It won't be on Linux until they've made it compatible with Vulkan, so I haven't yet, unfortunately. Otherwise I would definitely have bought it by now. It looks fantastic.
Anyone have a more recent, "mature" look at this game? It has lots of DLC. Is it like AI Wars/AI War 2?
I haven't played it seriously, but I can say that it's quite similar to Supreme Commander. You capture points and build production facilities, then you maintain a constant supply of units at your factories, sending them to the front lines to fight for more territory. You have the usual mix of unit types, upgrade trees, and orbital abilities that you can call upon when you have enough of a specific resource.
It's a pretty good game - absolutely nothing remarkable about it at all, but pretty good.
Of interest might be that the game's development has been rather silent since June (due to their Star Thingy game), but earlier this month Stardock released a dev update stating that a sequel is in the making rather than an expansion pack, BUT depending on how long you've been a Founder you will get the new game either for free or at a significant discount.
More info is about to be shared soon.
I agree with Huw however. It's much like SupCom.
