Title: Pydna: 168 BC June 22: Roman Elephants
Post by: MengJiao on October 14, 2020, 02:07:48 PM

By the Third Macedonian War, the Macedonians could beat up the Romans pretty often, but the Romans just plain knew how to deal with all kinds of things so ...after a rough start, they cornered the main Macedonian army near Mount Olympus and brought in the fleet and over 20 elephants to finish off the Macedonians once and for all at Pydna.  I'm simulating this with the Macedonians as the Macedonians and the Persians as the Romans (with elephants and the Immortals as the two 2nd-rate legions involved).  About half an hour into the battle (which is huge around 30,000 on each side), here the elephants and Roman cavalry approach the Macedonian right:

And at one point it looked like the Macedonian right might cave in (but it didn't)...so without Alexander to sort of push the battles to a catestrophic conclusion (mostly by moving first and more often)...this game system doesn't drive things to a massive collapse very often:

But maybe the Great battles (of the Ancient World) system will handle Pydna better.  I'll give that a try.
