A War of a Madman's Making - a text-based war planning and political survival RPG

It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge.  War endures.  As well ask men what they think of stone.  War was always here.  Before man was, war waited for him.  The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner.  That is the way it was and will be.  That way and not some other way.
- Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian

If they made nothing but WWII games, I'd be perfectly content.  Hypothetical matchups from alternate history 1980s, asymmetrical US-bashes-some-3rd world guerillas, or minor wars between Upper Bumblescum and outer Kaboomistan hold no appeal for me.

I guess it's sort of nice that the word "tactical" seems to refer to some kind of seriousness during your moments of mental clarity.

Very sad news all around.

Don't look now, but add Shannon Doherty to the list. What a depressing costly week.

^ I assume this is as good place as any to ask if there is a larger story behind Sgt. Wilkerson and that tank on the other side of that hedgerow...

In an interesting convergence of err..."hobbies," Dr. Ruth and one of wargaming's most prolific and popular designers, Mark Herman, worked together and were good friends.

This according to a recent interview with Mark Herman, who ran Victory Games in the 80s. Victory Games as you may know, was a division of Avalon Hill, made up of former SPI designers who escaped from SPI after it was purchased by TSR. Victory Games produced some of the most revered board wargames, and many of them have been reprinted by other publishers over the years: Pacific War, Vietnam, The Korean War, The Civil War and NATO for example. Other games that have not been republished, still demand high dollars on the secondary market: Carrier, Hell's Highway and Tokyo Express being good examples.

Anyway, Victory Games' most popular title was not a wargame, but "Dr. Ruth's Game of Good Sex." Apparently it sold almost as many copies as all other Victory Games titles combined (according to Mark Herman). During the course of producing and marketing the game, Dr. Ruth and Mark Herman became good friends.

Here is the Mark Herman interview. He speaks very fondly of working with Ruth Westheimer and the success of the game at around 39:08.

The Tag Line pretty much sums it up Crossroads. Other than my expletives-deleted immediately after.  :hair:  From the CMBN campaign, ' The Road to Monteborg' which is one I actually completed successfully.

Yeah, he was a great guy. Brave but not too bright, like a lot of my Sergeants in CM. He had good eyes. Unfortunately, so did the Germans in the tank.

He did his country a great service by providing invaluable insight to his squad.  I'm sure that, indeed, was worth taking a look at.

I wonder how many people in real wars have died shortly after hearing/saying the phrase "Take a look at that."

Well Union General Sedgwick died at Spotsylvania, sniped while saying "they couldn't hit an elephant at that distance."
