US Army whiskey ration

Today in 1832, Adjutant General Order #72 abolished the whiskey ration.  Each soldier had received a gill of whiskey (four ounces) per day.  In exchange, coffee and sugar were substituted.

And for the last 100 years or so Canadian officers have been able to trade their liquor ration away for Colt automatic pistols, carbines, tommy guns and the occasional B-17.
