"Take a look at that". Sgt. Wilkerson-- CMBN. His last words after spotting a German tank on the other side of a hedgerow.

What was that famous book by a German officer who was with 21th Panzah in Normandy? Some standard read, just the name escapes me right now.

Currently reading World Undone by G.J. Meyer.  It's a history of WWI.  Great read!  I'm about half way through or a little better.  A good history of the war and the events leading up to it.  Lots of small two or three page chapters on little known aspects of the war.  Really easy to read and quite engrossing.  I'd highly recommend.

Just finishing Vicksburg Grant's Campaign That Broke the Confederacy, by Donald L. Miller

BTW, same author as Masters of the Air.

This is a great telling of the most complex land / naval campaign during the Civil War. I completely enjoyed it, and found it very informative and interesting.

Vicksburg was a nearly unassailable fortress on the Mississippi. The city was protected by tangled bayous and a spaghetti plate of rivers, creeks and streams. Its guns were on high bluffs. And almost every time the Federals tried to storm the city's bastions, they were turned back with heavy losses. It was only through audacity, persistence, logistics, naval/ground cooperation, and mediocre Confederate leadership that Grant was able to prevail.

Some minor nit-picky issues...but overall a great book. Highly recommend for anyone with even a passing interest in the campaign.

Got started on Rick Atkinson's The British Are Coming, first book in his trilogy on the American Revolution.  Really enjoyed his trilogy on the American Army in WWII Europe and so far I'm find this compelling reading.

#5907
Taking a break from non-fiction / history.

Started reading Bernard Cornwell's "Last Kingdom" series. Reading them in sequence. Currently half-way through book 5, "The Burning Land." There are 13 books in the series.

For those not familiar with it, the series takes place in England, during the reign of Alfred the Great (late 800s AD).  Plenty of fighting between Danes and Saxons. It was the age when Vikings scoured much of England. The books are very good. They have even spawned a televised series on Netflix that at least in the early season, covers the books pretty well.

For some reason I could never get into Cornwell's "Sharpe" series set in the Napoleonic Wars, but "Last Kingdom" hits the right note with me.

Cornwell is a prolific writer in the historical fiction space, and the man can tell a good story...

And, as many of us already are aware of, made into a great series on Netflix.

I know the Sharpe TV series/movies with Sean Bean are generally well regarded, too.
