Title: College Football 2020
Post by: airboy on July 31, 2020, 09:54:14 PM
The two conferences I care about: the ACC and the SEC have announced their plans.

ACC will have 10 conference games and allow one extra non-conference game for a team within their State.  This was done to allow some of the normal rivalry games:
Georgia - Georgia Tech
Clemson - South Carolina
Florida - Florida State
Louisville - Kentucky

Then the SEC came out with a schedule of 10 conference games killing the allowed rivalry game the ACC would allow.

The SEC said each school will have to determine if their will be fans, and if so how many and by what choice mechanic.

Overall, this season will kill intercollegiate sports for a lot of small schools.  Why?  It is a little complicated so bear with me.

First, pretty much every college sports team loses money except Football and Men's Basketball.
Second, the NCAA tourney was killed for Men's Basketball in 2020 - which killed a ton of money for a lot of smaller schools.
Third, Federal law mandates "equalivant opportunities" for men and women to participate in intercollegiate sports.
Fourth, medium size schools make money playing away football games and for their conference getting a split of the Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament.

All of the power 5 conferences have pretty much eliminated non-conference games.  That kills a huge proportion of revenue for an awful lot of schools.

Next, it is uncertain how many fans will be allowed to see home college football games.  That attendance is a large revenue stream.

So combine the lost money from killing the 2020 Men's Basketball Tourney, killing nonconference football games, and potentially killing a substantial portion (or all) ticket revenue for football games means a tremendous cash drain on athletic budgets.

An awful lot of intercollegiate sports programs are going to die.  Many nonrevenue sports will be axed because the cash cows of basketball and football will be hamstrung.

My wife suggested just allowing current students to see College Football games this season.  From a health perspective it makes a lot of sense since the young are highly unlikely to be seriously ill from covid.  Also, if only the students see the games then you can space them out in the stadium.  This will never happen since students are a trivial part of ticket revenue.  Big donors get the best seats and pay big bucks for them.

Still, I welcome getting to watch college sports again - at least on TV.

I'm hoping the season happens.  But even if it does it'll have an asterisk next to it regardless of results.

I had high hopes for Auburn to have an offensive resurgence with Morris at OC.    He did great things at Clemson but was in over his head at Arkansas.

Nix with a year under his belt and Tank Bigsby coming in were highlights for me.  I hope I get to see them for what they're worth.

War Eagle anyway.

UConn is an independent in football.  Who was going to play them this year?  The power 5 conferences effectively eliminated nonconference games.  Some of the smaller conferences cancelled football.  UConn seems like they are trying to score PR points in a season where they could not schedule any opponents.

Their "marquee game" that would have generated the most money was against UNC - and the ACC cancelled that game.

You are right on about the money. Football, and to a lesser extent basketball, fund all of a university's sports, men's and women's. And small schools would play big ones just because their cut of the box office was the biggest cash inflow they had for the year. So, you are right. A lot of sports programs will be cancelled and some schools will be dropping all their sports. How severe the fallout will be may depend on the fan response to the broadcast only format for big schools. I bet there is a real scramble to determine what advertising rates should be. I am not sure it is all a bad thing. It may be that some programs continue just because the kids really want to play and do so without big money backing. We may see a move away from a university semi-pro system and back to real amateur sports at some schools.

Midwest Athletic Conference cancelled all Fall Sports.

If you read ESPN's take it is 100% "we care about the health of the players, dominos starting to fall, blah blah blah."

Lets look at the economic reality.

The MAC makes its money losing away college football games and playing Men's Basketball.  With the Big 10 and the SEC both cancelling nonconference games, a huge revenue source for the MAC vanished.  The NCAA has also demanded expensive testing regimes for Fall sports.

To recap - MAC loses its means of making serious money for the Fall.  Having any Fall sports would be far more expensive because of the mandated testing requirements.  So cancel Fall sports and cut your losses.  This also means that the MAC can postpone the difficult political decision of eliminating sports which always lose money to another day.

^ This seems to be premature.  Some of the schools are pushing back hard on this.  I'm guessing that some Athletic Directors & University Presidents are starting to realize that if they cancel football in a power 5 conference that it may cost them their extremely high paying jobs.

Dan Patrick reports the Pac 12 is out as well.

However, the SEC is looking at forming a one year super conference made up of teams that are pushing back from the conference votes.   Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan seem to be open to a one year exit.

The primary reason for the Big 10 and Pac 12 schools wanting it to cancel is being reported as the move by the players to organize and create a College Football Players Association.

The Name/Image/Likeness lawsuit was won and will be implemented pretty soon.  That will cause some changes - but not as much as the players think.

There has been little success in unionizing college athletics over the decades.  The big problem is Title 9 and the mandated split in "opportunities to participate."

The demands that I've read about deal with covid safety stuff with an add-on demanding 50% of all football revenues - which will never fly and is highly questionable legally given all of the Title 9 crap that has accumulated over the decades.

If the college kids don't want to play men's football or basketball - then set up minor leagues like baseball does and let them have at it.  That has come back again in basketball since the "one and done" stuff yielded obvious corruption when a player or two can get you to the post-season - but they can't be paid.  The Zion Williamson situation at Dook is quite ugly.

I really wish college football and basketball did not act as "unofficial minor leagues" for major league sports - the inability to pay people what they can command on the open market sets up huge incentives to cheat.  The way college baseball is done now is a much more honest way to address the situation.

Auburn had an explosion in plague cases when the students returned.  This was totally expected since the plague poses few problems to those under 40.  A total of 517 new cases were reported in two weeks - with 502 coming from students.  The "backup plague dorms" have not come anywhere close to capacity.  High school football has resumed in Alabama.  AU is having football practice with the first game towards the end of September.  Unlike UNC and NC State - the AU administration expected the plague and expected the consequences to be minor.

In an outbreak of amazing common sense, AU decided to limit the first football game to 20% of capacity and gave almost all of the tickets to students.  This is often the only time the kids get to see games during their lives, and they are at minimal risk for serious consequences.  My wife and I were amazed the University did something so obviously logical.

My son is at Texas A&M taking all upper level classes. All in "in-person". They wear masks and all sit at least 6 feet apart. I doubt if anyone KNOWS what the Wuhan virus infection rate or infected number is, but he says that as far as he can tell the number of actual sick people is not noticeable. I believe a lot of the lower level (larger) classes are on-line only.

Related comment: Everyone knew and expected that "opening up" would cause an increase in the number of infections. Now that it has done exactly what was predicted, I am mystified as to the sudden panic. The salient fact is that the people who are most subject to die, like me, are not the ones getting infected.

The A&M Band is the best marching band in the country and your basketball dance group is by far the hottest in the SEC.
Lots of A&M grads on the Auburn faculty, and several are buddies.

Auburn beat Kentucky by 16.  Kentucky turned the ball over three times to none for Auburn.

Unfortunately, Auburn only had 91 yards on the ground with the quarterback the leading rusher.

17,000 in the stands - mostly parents of players and students.  No eagle fly over which is both sad and frankly stupid for Covid.

Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed in the run game.  I was looking forward to Tank Bigsbgy's debut.

However Auburn's O-Line is too much a WIP to have really killed it on the ground.

What I liked seeing was an opportunistic defense that did well even after losing so many starters, and Nix putting the ball where it needed to be.

I was really impressed by Nix.  The guy made some hard clutch throws.  He seems to have really improved his deep ball and gotten into a rhythm with Seth Williams.

It's going to be tough sledding for him in an all SEC season but he started very well.

I agree that Nix was very accurate on Saturday.  He kept drilling passes where it took a good catch for his receiver but was impossible for a defender to pick.  The kid has a really strong arm.

The offensive line was much better in pass protection than the run, but the pass protection was also not that great.

I was amazed the LSU defensive backs kept letting receivers get behind them.

It was creepy watching cardboard cutouts sprinkled with real people at South Carolina, vs the Vols. Off to the right of one of the goalposts was a pair of guys wearing large paper bags over their heads with cutout eyes, which was pretty hilarious, though! (I pointed them out to my parents when I saw them.)

Tennessee only technically won that game. We really had lost, and I felt super-bad for SC. They came back from behind and took a solid late lead, and would have gotten away with it, too, if their punt receiver hadn't lost the ball in the stadium lights or something and called a fair catch two steps inward from where the ball actually landed -- and if the ball hadn't bounced forward to blap the back of his leg! Meaning all the Vols standing around him (a short high punt) could now throw themselves on the ball.

We did play good enough to come back for a win from that point, but as Mom said it was a nasty game.

Mom and I went over the numbers last night and she remembers 7 wins, too. Some were as faulty as last night, so I'm loath to call it a dynasty, but hey, it beats not winning!  ...I mean not losing!

In my defense, my expectations for TN have been very confused for years and years now.  :hide:

I read sports stories on Outkick.com  They throw in a lot of actual facts and numbers in their stories.

They reported that the late bets on College Football at the sports books in Vegas and elsewhere are bigger now than anyone can ever remember going back decades.  Lines to place bets winding through the casino and sometimes out the door due to length.

Previously, sports betting was pretty spread out the week before a game.  Now the action is heavily concentrated in the last 20 hours or so before the book closes for the game due to late breaking info on who will take the field and who was able to practice during the week.

I watched the first half and the first two drives of the 2nd half with a couple of buddies.  Georgia dominated the line of scrimmage on offense and defense in the first half and built their lead.  Auburn never got into the end zone.

Georgia has unfortunately owned Auburn this decade.  Auburn has a much worse record against Georgia than they do against Bama.

On the bright side, UNC won and Dook lost.  Dook is also in ESPN's Bottom 10 and they spelled it right!   Dook could not do much against Virginia Tech although VT had 21 players and 3 coaches out due to covid.

The Gators blew-it in the end to Texas A&M.  :pullhair:  The Hurricanes got their butts handed to them royally by Clemson. But Bama hung-on against a VERY impressive Ole Miss. Next Saturday's game between No. 2 Bama and No. 3 Georgia could be for the Championship for the winner.  :bd:

Auburn should not have won that game.

Honestly, I've never felt more unpleasant after a win than I do today.

Arkansas has improved massively after losing Chad Morris and now Auburn has him as the OC.  I am an Auburn grad and have watched more than 20 years of Auburn football and not seen anything as awful as Nix's fumbled snap and lateral spike that somehow the Refs decided to bail Auburn out on.

This is a poorly coached football team at many levels.  It succeeds in spite of Gus, not because of him.

There are problems that go a lot deeper than Nix, but yes he played awfully.  For all intents and purposes Auburn didn't beat Arkansas either.

Seeing Williams and Nix fighting on the sidelines and coaches unable to control it is embarrassing.

SC hasn't beaten Auburn since 1933.  A long, hard look needs to be taken at the fundamental issues that have caused this to come to pass and it all starts with the Head Coach.

Just because he beats Alabama more regularly than most doesn't mean that should buy him job security.  We made a huge mistake with his extension.

Anyone watch that Clemson massacre today? Wowzers.

Clemson's playing on a different level from everyone else.  Even Alabama.

Lawrence passed for over 400 yards and 5 TD's.

It all starts with the coach though.  Dabo Swinny has built a juggernaut.  Dude took a non-state school that wasn't considered a blue blood prior to his tenure and has turned them into the top program in the nation.

So, acknowledging what a good Coach like Swinny or Saban can do, lets look at guy who has managed to take a College Football blue blood and drag them into a real morass of mediocrity.

In his 8 years at Auburn, here's where Gus Malzhan stands...

3-4 (43%) vs. Alabama
2-7 (22%) vs. Georgia
2-5 (29%) vs. LSU
2-5 (29%) in bowl games
1-4 (20%) in bowl games vs. major conference teams
0-11 (0%) in Baton Rouge, Athens and Tuscaloosa
36-26 (58%) vs. SEC opponents
14-16 (47%) vs. SEC opponents on the road
7-6 (54%) vs. non-conference Power 5 teams
20-25 (44%) when playing ranked teams
8-15 (35%) when playing top 10 teams
2 NY6 bowl appearances, and is 0-2 (0%) in them
6 straight seasons (and counting) with at least four losses
1st loss to a non-major conference team in 27 years
1st loss to Tennessee in 19 years (20 years at home)
1st loss to South Carolina in 87 years (1933).
0 playoff appearances
0 National titles
2 first-round NFL draft picks since 2014, both in 2020. Went 5 seasons without a single first-round pick.

How does he still have a job!?   :pullhair:

I...I don't know.

Ugly when you lay it out like that isn't it?

I mean, the answer is he took someone else's team to the NC game in 2013, a game they lost partly due to his poor decisions in the 2nd half.   Then in his hotseat year in 2017 he managed to beat Georgia and Alabama back to back and go to the SEC Championship that he lost.  To me that earned him a one year prove it deal.  To Auburn's now thankfully ex-AD Jay Jacobs that earned him a 7 year extension that would cost currently $21 million to fire him.

:pullhair:

Now Gus has the gall to blame COVID on his team's miserable performance this year.  A year our legendary Coach Pat Dye died, partly from complications of COVID.  This ignoring the 7 years previous where Gus has been dragging down the program that Pat Dye resurrected from the mediocrity of the Doug Barfield years in the 70's and made it a major player in NCAA Football.

I'm off the Gus Bus.  I'm not only off it, I'm slashing its tires and putting sugar in its gas tank.

Can you all tell I'm pissed?

Well, I'm an elitist dick.  I don't honestly think of UNC regularly.

I keep thinking on how USC and UNC have utterly failed, constantly, to dominate their region and how Clemson of all comers have taken every ounce of talent away, and won, and won regularly, and are really the best of the best.

Auburn's not the state school, same as Clemson.  They had, under Dye and Tubberville the same success a non state school like Clemson can have.

Malzhan has torpedoed Auburn.

STILL MAD.

I'm actually surprised they don't do better.  Clearly Clemson has demonstrated there's talent to be had on the coast.

I'm mostly an Auburn fan because it's my alma mater as well, but I did start following them and cheering for them prior to going to the Plains.  All it took were Alabama fans ordering me to "declare" when my family moved to Alabama in '89.

Got a prediction for this weekend. Bama played to near perfection in their game last Sat. in the second half. So watch for them to fall-down against Tenn. this weekend. I don't say they'll lose but... I think they will play sloppily and look like they're hung-over. After Georgia, how're you going to get 'Up' to play the Vols? Could be an upset in the making. Or at least they bust the point spread.  :wow:
Title: Re: College Football 2020
Post by: JasonPratt on October 23, 2020, 10:50:58 AM
I dunno. Bama doesn't have much of the same classic psychological problems the Vols have had since the 80s, where if they aren't fighting for their lives they goof off and don't bother winning. (And that was back when the Vols were national top rank caliber every year!)

Also, if Bama was going to slough off I don't think it would be against Tennessee, due to our very long and historic rivalry. They might pull ahead and then go home early, so to speak, rejoicing in another win over the Vols, and then get caught in trouble late, but that's the worst I can feasibly imagine.

This leaves aside totally the question of whether the Vols can even show up and play.  ::) Bama might win against us this year while still on literal hangovers!

My wife was upset Auburn won.  She wanted them to be crushed by Ole Miss so Malzhan would get fired quicker.

We were listening to the UA - Tennessee game in the pouring rain on a longish interstate drive.  Decided to listen to at least Tennessee's first possession of the 2nd half.  After the pick 6, we listened to the Virginia Tech - Wake Forest game.

Let's see if this works. I got this by right-clicking on the video at YT itself, and left-clicking copy code (second option on the dropdown menu), then pasting the result between the "youtube" codes. This has always worked for me in the past. (Yep, tested out, seems to work.)

I have no idea why copying the actual youtube address has problems. Once upon a time that could be solved by deleting the security 's' after the http, but not anymore. It obviously doesn't cause problems for other people in other browsers; might just be a problem specific to Firefox.

There was a time when Auburn was no kidding the secret nemesis rival of the Vols, whom we looked forward to every year with a special trepidation. We loved playing Bama and Florida, win or lose (and sometimes won). But Auburn scared us, win or lose.

It's a good thing I mostly ignored that game. I could have easily been talked into taking up drinking, maybe a wide sampling of various dark beers to start with.

Unfortunately, Notre Dame controlled the line of scrimmage in the 2nd half.  UNC's penalties and lack of line depth killed them once again in a top 5 matchup.  I'm not sure if they have ever won a game against a top 5 team in football.

Saw that. My condolences.

Saw it with six friends & my wife.  We had:
1] Marinated and Grilled Beef Tenderloin
2] Boiled Shrimp with Bay seasoning
3] Black Beans & Dirty Rice
4] Cheese & spice stuffed peppers
5] Excellent Mac & Cheese
6] Excellent Potato something (like Mac & Cheese but better)
7] Grilled Chicken
8] Brownies
plus we watched it on a deck with a big metal fire pit

and there was booze.

It was pretty awesome.  Everyone was a buddy and we caught up - and yelled at the TV.

You do not understand College Football.  But after all, it was not UNC losing to Dook.  Several of the people were real big Auburn fans, but they ate well and enjoyed the meal.

Ask Sir Andrew D. about tailgating or watch parties.

I would've lost money on that game. No way I thought Bama would beat the Tigers like that.  :o And with the Gators winning today, it looks like Florida vs Alabama for the SEC Championship. That ought to be a real shoot-out.  :bd:

^ You are like everyone else who I talked to about the spread before the game.  My wife and I were not convinced and would have taken Bama and the spread (I can even provide multiple references about this).  But Alabama does not have a legal sports book and I would not take a bet against a team I actually cared about - so it makes no difference.

Auburn's Safety (Smoke Monday) played absolutely horribly.  If he had moved in the right direction (on most any of the Alabama 25+ yard touchdown plays) they should have been stopped after 10-15 yards.  One of my buddies at the party said the Alabama highlight reel would be the Smoke Monday lowlight reel.  At the end of the game when they replayed all of the longer Bama scores - there he was screwing up every time.

Auburn's defensive line was crushed by Texas A&M.  My wife was happy with the result because she wants the coach fired.  Auburn is not competitive with the top tier of the SEC in football this season.

UNC crushed Western Carolina scoring 42 in the first half then yanking the starters (as they should).

Dook was humuliated again.  Perhaps their worst season in two decades.

BYU / Coastal Carolina matchup was interesting.  Game set up within a week to help both teams chances of getting to a major bowl.  BYU needed it more than CC given how weak their opponents are this season.  Really close game.

UNC put up 62 on #10 Miami and set several school, conference and NCAA records for rushing.

Dook lost.

Auburn may or may not win (I'm going to bed).

Tennessee did not get beat by a girl.

From ESPN's Bottom 10: "This weekend Vandy hosts Tennessee in the Volunteer State Pillow Fight of the Week presented by Dollywood. The winner of the game gets Coastal Carolina coach Jamey Chadwell's phone number." >:D

This has just been a really bizarre college football season.  The signal-to-noise ratio is a lot lower than it has been in many years due to all the COVID disruptions to prep time, game time rosters, and impact on opponents.  A team that is a buzzsaw one weekend will be a cupcake the next.

My own Sooners managed to claw their way back from a miserably slow start to make it to the Big XII conference championship game.  Now, if either OU or ISU has to withdraw from playing because of COVID numbers, the Big XII has announced that they'll sub in Texas for either team.  Texas, who's already had 5 of their 6 captains opt out for the remainder of the season (one injury, 4 voluntary).

What happens in the SEC CG if one team loses too many players due to COVID?

Hell, half the Iron Bowls I ever saw were with Bama fans.

Best one I saw my best friend who is a Bama grad had alternating shots of Alabama Slammers, Buttery Nipples, Blue Hawaiians and Screwdrivers.

And then we proceed to embarrass ourselves with an 8 person "search committee"

Sports Illustrated took us to task and I agree.  There's a simple formula here.  Cristobal if he says yes, Freeze then if you're feeling risky, Napier after and then you get into your coffers and throw at Kiffen and Sark.

Auburn needing a committee to try to pick...that's just so JABA.  We don't need 8 boosters and former players to pick a guy.  The fact we do is showing there's dissent and that the old "our guy" crowd is still there looking at utterly awful choices like Steele, Lashee and Muschamp.

I don't disagree with letting Gus go, but man, we have to upgrade.  The "pick our guy" philosophy of the post-Tubberville era has to end.

UNC lost a close (until the last 4:30) game to Texas A&M.  UNC's three All Americans (both running backs and a wide receiver) chose to "prepare for the NFL" along with their best defensive player.  UNC might have won the game if they had their stars playing.

I've grown to dislike non-BCS Bowl games pretty intensely because they are not the same teams that played during the regular season.

Yeah.  COVID-19 has made a hash of the whole season, and I think all of us fans need to express our appreciation for all the teams who held it together and worked hard to make it onto the field for 9 or 10 or 11 competitive games this season.

It's literally been about the only piece of normalcy involving more than 6 people anywhere that I feel like I've retained this year.   I didn't anticipate we'd get more than 3 or 4 games played all season, and I've got to show my appreciation for the staff and players who did all the stuff they needed to so they could be healthy enough to play the games this year.

I have a suspicion that most of players on most of the .500 teams who managed to play competitive games all year long worked as hard this season as most College Football Playoff teams do in a normal year.  I really appreciate what all of these guys did just to give us a college football season.

I'm getting really bothered by the rate at which opt-outs are ruining the college football post-season.  My Sooners got to stomp a mudhole in a deplete Florida program, and after the game, the Florida coach as much as said, "Well, they weren't really playing our Varsity squad anyways."  How is that good for the game?

Ah well, there's been so much money flowing into college football for a long time, I suspect the "business-ization" of the game was inevitable.

Players did their conditioning pretty much the same this year as in previous years (except possibly swimming).  At least the players with discipline who wanted to excel did.

The amount of practice time the College teams had this year has been severely depleted.  Football is obvious.  But in Basketball, Women's Soccer, etc.... the number of games dropped dramatically, the number of practices dropped substantially.  In team sports, you have to practice as a team (and play games) to improve.

Mostly, this has been done in a rational fashion.  But how basketball players sit on the "bench" with Covid is just stupid.  They practice together and play scrimmages together, but they cannot sit together because of the plague?

I wasn't really talking about practice time or S&C time.  I was talking about the mental effort involved in all the testing, and quarantine requirements, and all the other stuff that most kids their age have been taking short-cuts on all school year.  To say nothing of how disruptive social distancing guidelines are to practice and film study habits, etc.

You look at episodes like the Browns losing their entire WR corps for a week, or the Broncos losing their entire QB room, and you realize that even grown-ass men paid millions of dollars to play a game often didn't have the self-discipline to keep masks on and sit 6 feet apart when watching film.

The fact that enough of these college students did that to give us a largely full college football season speaks volumes to me of their dedication to their teammates, their fans, and the game.

The discipline that endurance sports athletes must have to compete in Power 5 sports is unbelievable.  Track, swimming and the like.  The number of hours they have to practice (basically conditioning) just to be competitive is amazing.  It was worse than a 40 hour a week job for those folks based on my many conversations over the decades with athletes in these sports who took my courses.

The Buckeyes got nothing to be ashamed of Tank. I never thought they were for real until I saw them demolish Clemson in the playoffs. Then with some of their best players out with injuries they still stayed with 'Bama pretty well, coming back to within 2 TD's of them in the 3rd quarter. They certainly didn't back into the playoffs, they deserved to be there.

There's no doubt that Bama deserved that win and dominated that game.

For the sake of college football, I wish that more teams would get competive with Bama.  But, in light of what we know today, it's awful hard to blame that on Alabama.  Other programs just have to figure out how to get better.
