Former enemies?

Will the recipe change to include current enemies when the game starts ?

It could become a bit complex 😉

We don't have any exotic units ourselves, like flaming pigs.

So we'll have to make do with hot princess ambassadors.

While you boys are threatening each other with recipes of dubious quality I would have you know Egypt has been engaged in furious diplomacy with the upstart Judean State that has apparently got concessions of free territory including Jerusalem and a port on the Med sea (in exchange for peace in the area going forward) from Antigonus and was attempting to extract similar land from my client state Nabatea to get a port on the Red Sea.

Only when the Foreign Ministry in Alexandria, acting upon order from Ptolemy himself issued a statement that "Any attack on our brothers in Nabatea shall be considered an attack on Egypt herself " did the High Priests of Judea back down......though their diplomatic message concluded with the words "for now".

This information has been made public in the interests of transparency for all powers in the area dealing with both a very belligerent Judea and those wondering in which direction the Antigonids are intending to expand............

Good point. How's the Diplomacy in this game?

Good point. How's the Diplomacy in this game?

What particular aspect are you interested in ?

As a couple of examples : Section 9.2 of the Manual :

Other states will send you messages as appropriate. Some of these are requests to agree a particular option such as for a co-operation treaty. Some are triggered by your actions and the relative values (which can be based on military power, wealth, culture, decadence etc.) between your two nations. These do not lead to any immediate consequences but do indicate the relative relations between your powers. A message praising your recent successes might suggest now is a good time to seek an alliance. One gloating at a disaster, or praising some-one for attacking you, indicates poor relations and you may want to prepare for war at some stage.

Section 9.3

The chances of any action (except the unilateral ones, such as declaring war) are influenced by the relationships between the two countries, represented on a scale from -99 to +99. At -99, the hostility is
extreme between the two countries, at +99, the trust is so great that being allied seems almost natural. There are two special relationships values also, -100 and +100. You can't reach them by normal means, only through events or special decisions. -100 means you are locked in a permanent war, called a Feud. +100 means you are locked in a permanent alliance, called a Pact. In addition to the relationship value between the two countries, relevant parameters that influence the decision of the other nation, if controlled by the AI, includes: w The balance of power; w The relative control of objectives they want or ones you have in their own territory; w the number of allies; w If you, or they are already at war.
All these and more play a role in the decision. For example, don't expect a winning nation with allies to make peace with you, unless war exhaustion is crippling them (or another threat appears in their back). War exhaustion is the incentive to make peace as it increases as time passes and the wars accumulate against the country. In effect, for most nations, every turn of war against every opponent adds one unit of war weariness (so you can gain more than one unit per turn) but this will be removed once a peace has been agreed.

Furthermore certain actions other than diplomatic ones are affected by diplomatic relations between countries, so a nation that has the "Raiding" special ability cannot do this to a neighbour that has better than +25 relations.

Interesting to see how this plays out in actual gameplay.
