I like playing the Modern Campaigns from WDS.  No history to guide your play and you can use the strategy that you think would work best. Playing a PBEM game from Danube '85 that is the entire campaign from Denmark to Austria.  Right now the Leopards and M1's of NATO are stopping me cold in places but to do so they are having to concentrate which has left other forces room to roam.  Going to be an intersting game.  Also playing the full campaign from Korea '85. I'm playing as the NK and we have torn the ROK fortifications on the cease fire line apart and have encircled and destroyed a lot of troops.  I've been adamant about finding and destroying Allied artillery as they are great killers in this game.  Racing against the clock to keep troops reformed and rested but still moving forward to get as much ground as possible for the American reinforcements start pouring in.  Of course I'll have the opportunity to take Chinese reinforcements later on.

Current Events / Re: Russia's War Against Ukrai...

I'm sure that the Ukrainians would have loved to have been able to employ F-16s in combat earlier.  But my sense is that this particular comment came because in 2023 there were still some hopes for a more fluid battlefield, and a high-value platform like the F-16 could have been MUCH more useful in that environment than for the war of attrition we see today.

Like it did to you, that very comment stood out to me when I read that Newsweek article this morning.  I viewed that earlier Ukrainian comment as an expression of frustration and cynicism intended for political consumption, as opposed to an incisive military insight intended to inform Americans about the battlefield.

It's also my sense that, among those who weren't just interested in pimping F-16s as the latest wonder weapon that would win the war for Ukraine (there were plenty of journalists doing THAT), operational F-16s would have been at their best IF the Ukrainians had been able to clear an alley free of SAMs between Ukrainian air space and the Sea of Azov.

I forget the exact details or the weapons loadout, but I recall reading that the promised F-16s were coming with weapons systems that could prove VERY useful in hunting down Russian transports and in menacing the Kerch Street Bridge.  This could have been a game-changer in terms of severing supply lines to all Russian troops in and beyond Crimea.  It also would have put additional strain on Russian abilities to fly CAP over the battlefield, which currently relies on a very limited number of Mi-31s with standoff weapons capabilities.

I don't want to sound mean, but at the same time it's such an imbalance factor that I don't see how the game could go otherwise.  You don't just have > 400 sacreds on turn 25, you're making just under 80/turn then too.

Marignon in our game right now couldn't do that even with 0 upkeep.  It would take basically the whole world (BL + Mari combined) to produce 80 sacreds per turn using our anyfort sacreds, which aren't actually better than tomb wyrms, just to match what Ctis can do by mid turn 20s.  We're on turn 68.

By turn 50, LA Ctis, without expanding, can produce ~150 sacreds per turn.  Closing on 200/turn by turn 68.  They do not cost upkeep.

Compare this to MA Ermor lictor scaling and Ermor is a complete trash can.  Other undead nations can reanimate a bunch, but they aren't high hp sacred units, but rather longdead.

Yes, Ctis has to sacrifice cap mage research to get it.  No, that isn't a meaningful price when you can make 4 nation's worth of hell blessed sacreds just by existing until turn 25-30.  It's not like they're popkill either; they can still recruit regular units and forts on top of this.

Quote from: al_infierno on Yesterday at 12:29:37 AMUnfortunately Ash had to drop out, I've set Man to AI and taken over as Mari.  I've got an absolute ton of toys to play with here and I can see why she was having a bit of analysis paralysis there at the end!

Anyway, I don't fancy my chances of winning against Bandar Log even if I take the time to micro the hell out of everything Mari has. BL is entrenched with several underwater thrones that I'd need to win which are inaccessible to me, and I reckon I'd have to play a hell of a game to get TMIT into a surrender state.

I'm not conceding by any means, but my goal now is to set off as much fireworks as possible, as quickly as possible!

Dang everytime there is about to be a big battle someone drops out. Was looking forward to the show...

I had a big fight with Arco, and likely still will with Mari as we try to position/raid etc (if he takes too long, leprosy + baleful star combo will bleed the large stacks down).  Game has just been very slow past ~10 days since previous Mari player wouldn't put the turn in :p.

Quote from: Jarhead0331 on Yesterday at 08:49:46 AMI thought Ukrainian military officials said they needed the F-16s in 2023 and that employing them in 2024 wouldn't be the "right time"?

I guess we shall see. You would think the Ukrainians would want to deploy initially as part of some greater effort. But if it is true that Russian CAS is currently hammering the Ukrainians...maybe 'the truth has changed.' I don't hear the Ukrainians talking about an offensive anymore...they seem to be just trying to hang on.
