Title: Band of Brothers Ghost Panzers (Bob help required)

Hi everyone (and Bob)

As Bob is unavailable for playing online presently, I thought I would start an AAR for the tutorial battle in Ghost Panzers and he can give me tips on things I'm doing wrong or suggestions on what to do.

If anyone else has any ideas, any experience of this game system and can offer advice or see some faults in my logic, then please chime in

So - the first mission is to take two buildings in the middle of the map (20).

The Germans get 4 Infantry units, 1 Weapon Team and 2 Decoys. At least one decoy has to be setup north of the road on the top left quadrant of the map and all the German units have to deploy to the north of the West-East road. They also get 1 Command Point, 1-4 for Operations Range and get to setup first.

The Russians get 5 Infantry units, 4 MG units and 1 Weapon Team. The have to setup second (but get to move first), have an Operations Range of 3-4 and 1 Command Point.

Command Point
Command points are used to re-roll for morale checks, can be used by the player moving second to perform an action first (number of units that can be activated = number of command points available), conduct Final Op fire reroll a Melee roll or increase Proficiency Firepower. Command Points are distributed at the beginning of each turn.

Operations Range
Used to determine how many units can be "activated" before passing the pulse to the other player. In this scenario the Russians must activate at least 3 units and a maximum of 4 and the Germans can activate a minimum of 1 and maximum of 4.

A turn continues whilst there are units to "activate".


Turn 1
Russians
Russians get to move first and get to activate 3-4 units.
1st Unit
Russian Infantry squad in H6 attacks the German unit in G5

The Russian infantry loses it's conceal benefit
No need to check morale for a non suppressed unit
A Russian firepower of 4 is reduced to 2 (the Germans benefit from a -1 conceal + -1 wood building)
A roll of 1 means the German unit is suppressed. The roll does not warrant casualties (roll of 1+casualty rating of 4 on German unit is greater than adjusted firepower of 2)
The conceal counter is removed from the German unit to reveal a Decoy which is also removed
The Russian Infantry squad is marked as used

2nd Unit
The Russian MG squad in G7 attacks F5

A roll of 10 = no action and the German unit keeps it's Conceal counter
Russian MG squad is marked as used

3rd Unit
The Russian Weapon Team in D7 opens fire on the German unit in E6

The German unit gets a suppressed chit and the conceal counter is removed to reveal an Infantry Squad
The Russian WT is marked as used

4th Unit
The Russian Infantry Squad in F7 attacks E6

ok Bawb - got some more for you

Sorry for the bad quality pictures. The light in my room is terrible. The table is right underneath one, so shines on the map. I can't use the flash because it just bounces off the map (I have ordered a flash that can be angled)...so they are the best I can do given the light and lack of adjustable flash

There's no need for a morale check because the unit is not suppressed
The proficient FP of 5 is increased by 1 because the squad is marked as OpFire
The range to the target squad is 4 hexes, so a modifier of +4 to the German squad FP of 6 as the squad is in open ground
A roll of 1 is an automatic suppression, but because it can be added to the second Casualty rating of the Russian sqaud (7) and still come under the adjusted German FP of 10, then the Russian squad is eliminated and removed from the map

Looks good. The only comment I would have is that the last fire action could not have inflicted any further effect on the German squad. Its already fully supressed and the Russian FP was insufficient to cause a step loss. I would have been temped to move it down a couple of buildings to a possible good spot to launch an assault, since the German squad will only recover 1 suppression level.

Hey Bawb - I think I'm clear on this but just wanted to check. The roll for the Germans attacking the Russians with Op Fire - I read the rules correctly and you can't use a Command Point to make the Germans re-roll?

As I read it, you can use CPs

By the way, the game is starting to make "tactical" sense. I'm seeing mistakes I'm making - order of units being activated, when to move, benefits of suppression for the attacker etc...even with such lowly Russian units  O0

Yeah, there are chess-like aspects where sequencing of actions can be very important, although I guess that applies to most games to some extent.

The use of CP's is as defined in section 3.0 :-)

The Russian player only has 2 units left...I'm making an assumption here that although he has a minimum of 3 and maximum of 4 for his operations range that he can activate less than his minimum number if he doesn't have the minimum number left

Unit 1
The Russian squad in B5 loses it's Conceal chit and bonus

This concludes the Operations phase for both players as all units are effectively used


Rout Phase
Russian Rout Phase
The Russians being the side to move first goes through the rout phase first.
There are no Russian units in the same hex as an enemy unit, adjacent to an enemy unit not in melee or in open ground and in LOS of an enemy unit
German Rout Phase
The Germans rout next and the same situation as the Russians applies

That ends the Rout Phase


Melee Phase
There are no units of opposite sides in the same hex

This ends the Melee Phase


Recovery Phase
All Used and CP chits are removed and all Fully Suppressed markers are turned to their Suppressed side and all Supressed markers are removed

All used chits are removed

Firegroup C5, C6, C7 and C8 against E6 - you should have enough there to break them.  Then assault move F7, G7 and H6 into F6, G6 and H5 respectively.  F5 will have too many targets to fire at though he could opt to spray fire against F6 and G6 at point blank range.  ;)

Yeah - I think the problem was when I played the first set of moves, my head wasn't in line with the mechanics.

I know now to suppress - get suppression and they have to pass a morale check which will give me a chance of crossing the open ground without incident. Full suppression would be even better...although given the quality of the Russian troops and the defensive position of the Germans.

It could just come down to what Bob suggests - suicide

Bob - am I correct in my calculation of the modified FP above? It seems very harsh but I remember you saying it is a great tactical game in the sense that it really forces you to not charge about, using cover and suppression

What's the victory conditions JD?  You say in your intro to take 2 buildings but don't specify which.  I would assume that this is a "Guards Counterattack" type scenario with the Germans strictly defending; or is it a meeting engagement in that the Germans have to take two of the Russian buildings and vice versa for the Russian player?

Got ya.  These are fun types of scenarios in whatever tactical game system you use.  I'd take the Russians in this one any day just by the looks of it but the Germans could sure make it tough.  They must cover that D4-D6 road with as much firepower as they can; I'd look to move the squad in B3 over to D2 to assist with that.  That would allow the German squad to move back over to G4 where he can bolster up their left flank.

I'd think that the Russians can't be too fickle here.  They're going to take some losses but they have the numbers (as per usual) so they just need to swarm and overwhelm the VL building and take it and then let the time run out as the Germans make a counter-attack to try and take it back.

Problem is, for the Russians, is the FP bonus the Germans get when the Russians try to cross open ground without suppressing the German units. For a start, there's a +4FP bonus for the Germans as soon as a Russian unit moves out into the open. Then there's a +3 for being adjacent IF the Russian unit moves next to a German unit.

The hope the Russians have - and they actually did quite well this last phase - is to fully suppress the German units. By suppressing the German units, you reduce their ability to pass a morale check and if they can't pass a morale check, then they can't fire.

In this scenario, the Germans have a Weapon Team in D2 watching the road south - but the real danger will come from the South East. Now the German units are used and suppressed, the Russians can close in. That's why, as the German player, I moved the German squad from E4 to F4 - to cover. I might have been better moving it one further to G5 though...but I was holding off so that if the Russian came adjacent then I could pounce.

JD. You can only pass if you have no eligible units left to activate (or are marked as Op Fire). If the other player has units left un-activated, then he continues activation until he has non left. In other words, the turn ends when neither side has any un-activated units left.

If you have less un-activated units than your minimum operation range, then you just activate what you have available and then pass to the other side.

Yes, if the German unit fails its moral check then it will rout. If there is not another friendly unit in the hex then the routing unit will be destroyed since it is now adjacent to enemy unit which is not in melee (the units in the hex that it has just routed from).

Thanks for the help Bob. Sometimes a wee confirmation is a morale boost because it means I've taken something in.

oops...I hadn't thought about that.

Seems like that unit is doomed then (if it fails it's morale check in the rout phase) because I can't move any units into the hex with it and I can't fire into it (even if I had a unit that could fire). Also, I've used my Command Point for the Germans, so I can't re-roll if I fail the check.

Am I right? Is the unit doomed if it fails morale? I can't see a way of helping it.

If the Russian unit(s) in the melee are at full moral, then they obviously do not need to take a check; note that they would check first as the Russian player is the first player in the scenario.

So, if the German unit does fail its moral check, then it will indeed be lost. If there was a second German unit in the hex, then that would negate the loss.

Its quite possible that the German unit could pass its check and roll well enough to give 2 hits to the Russians whilst taking non in return (I have seen this happen on numerous occasions). They would then also both be fully supressed, and units in an on-going melee do not recover suppression, so they would now be at a distinct disadvantage.

The fact that stuff like this happens is what, to my mind, makes it such a good game system.

At the scenario start, I was gobsmacked at the Russian units and thought they wouldn't stand a chance. Having read the rules several times and going through this scenario, I'm learning some important aspects of the system.

I thought those two German units would be harder to dig out than a tick on a sheep dog which is why I didn't place any German units to the east of the objective buildings giving the Germans more firepower over there...but actually, it turns out they are very vulnerable.

Also, I would have reinforced the assaulted hex with the unit from E4 since the higher German FP gives them an advantage in melee; this would have also saved the assaulted unit had it failed its moral check.

Yeah. I thought I was being clever. At the time, I was thinking about the German player getting a nice bonus on a unit moving adjacent to them - but I forgot about 2 things...1) The German unit wouldn't be able to fire into the hex with the friendly unit and 2) I forgot about the rout issue. I understood it, but kind of hadn't taken on board that the German unit exiting the hex would be moving next to the Russian unit wherever it went.

This was a learning scenario and that's exactly what it's doing though.

I just have to hope the German squad passes the morale check and doesn't have to rout! Obviously, with hindsight, I wish I had kept my CP - but I needed it back then to try and force the German unit to stop. If I had rolled a good morale roll, the Russian unit would've been history with a +4 in open ground and a +3 for being adjacent

But playing through and seeing what's important has made the scenario make a lot of sense

Tonight I was playing one of the bigger 4 map scenarios and had a situation where 2 Russian 4/1 units managed to assault a German 6/5 unit that had a level 1 suppression. Bear in mind that the German player could spend a command point(s) to take an action with a unit prior to the Russian turn. This is often useful if you want to take a fire action against an adjacent unit before it fires at you.

Those command points are useful and so limited you have to take care on when to use them.

Of course, if you wanted to risk it.............move the German squad into F5 to assault. The Russian unit will be able to op fire first, but the max FP he can get is 4, or 5 if you spend a CP. The German squad, if it makes it, will have a much better chance in the assault, needing 6's to score hits against the Russian 4's. Even if the German unit takes a suppression, then he still has a 60% to continue into the building and a 60% chance of passing a moral check.

Actually Bob - the modified FP for the Russian squad is 3 is it not?

FP=1(proficiency FP)+3(adjacent)-1(Wood building)? Which could increase by 1 if the Russian player plays his CP...no? Or does the German squad not get the benefit of the wood building because they are moving out of it?

Check the three possible additions for prof FP. You get a plus 1 for being adjacent, and this is in addition to the 'normal' +3 modifier for being adjacent.

Rule 9, para 5 and see also the modifiers on the player aid card.

Yes the German does get the defensive modifier, but I think what you're missing is that the prof FP additions cannot exceed the original FP, but the other modifiers will still be added, therefore;

Prof FP = 1
+1 Prof FP for being adjacent
+1 Prof FP if you spend a command point.
+ 3 'normal' FP for being adjacent
-1 for the German terrain defence.

Modified FP = 5

So, for example, like the German unit;

Prof FP = 5
+1 for being adjacent.

Now that = 6 which is the main FP and so the German player could not add any more Prof FP modifiers, such as for an Op Fire marker or spend a command point, but the FP could be further modified by any of the standard modifiers (moving in the open / adjacent).

Again, if you look at the next para in rule 9, you will see it says that once you have calculated the Prof FP as above, you then apply any of the standard modifiers.

Glad you mentioned the last sentence - I was going to say couldn't you be fly on how you added the modifiers so that you ended up with the maximum...but the order is
Add Proficiency Modifiers (to the maximum of normal FP) ONLY for OpFire
Add Standard Modifiers
Remove defensive modifiers

Is that right?

Sorry to keep on - but I've had such long breaks between turns (real life) that I forget some of the rules and skim read - resulting in missing some small but important parts. For example, in my post where I struck my text out, I had forgotten that it was the proficiency fire power that was used!

I am a bit confused as to why Bob didn't channel his attack H7-H4-G5, which would give him the benefit of a covered approach using the buildings even though he would have to cross the road? At least going from H7 to H4 he would not face a unit at point blank, thus having a better chance to get a toehold in cover and then set up a base of fire from G5 to support the attacks/lead the attacks to F5/E6?

I hope you do some more scenarios together. This one has been quite interesting.

Bloody hell - I forgot about this!! The wife "carefully" moved it into the garage out the way when we had guests and it's been out of view for yonks!
