Title: 10 Bands I've Seen Live...
Post by: bayonetbrant on April 26, 2017, 10:10:51 PM
There's a full little game running around Facebook right now about "10 bands I've seen live"
The catch is that you're supposed to include one you didn't see, and everyone else has to try to figure it out.

I was just quickly brainstorming my original list just built around "bands people probably have at least heard of" which would rule out a lot of local Raleigh bands like Capsize 7 or Loose Cannon or Dead Cut Tree, and just focus on ones that at least had a national record release.  I stopped adding bands to the list at about 80.

So here goes a truncated list, including at least 1 I didn't see live.  See if you can guess which one  \m/
1. Follow For Now
2. Night Ranger
3. Cry of Love
4. Rage Against The Machine
5. Seven Nations
6. Neil Diamond
7. Lee Greenwood
8. Faith No More
9. Bowling for Soup
10. Saving Jane

I'm gonna guess Lee Greenwood.

My aunt and uncle saw Zep in 1975 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan and LEFT THE SHOW - they claim it was one of the worst they had ever been to! Way too loud and horrible, muddy sound...I couldn't even speak when they first told me that.

Yep, but I was at the show, just after they played.

Lollapalooza III – they were the opening act.
When they hit the stage around 11am, I was still at Ft Bragg finishing a 20km ruck march.  I didn't get to Lolla III until the last few songs from Arrested Development, and I was there for Fishbone, Dinosaur Jr, Alice in Chains, and Primus, all of whom sucked that day.

Wow in 68 they were still wee lads eh? That would be like seeing U2 in 1980.

My condolences Jamus. Did you get a Our Lady Peace t shirt?

I win for BB and Rage! This is a fun game, I will post my list later.

I saw Creed in Jacksonville, FL in early 1998 at Club 5. This was right before they hit it big but they were well known in the North Fl region. And yes if it was any later I would mostly not have gone to see them. Their first album was actually pretty good IMO

Yeah in 97-98, they were hitting the same 6-8 cities about every 4 months, and each gig, they doubled the crowd size.  They hit their 2-3 cities in FL where they had hometown crowds, and then San Antonio, Phoenix, LA, etc where they could rely on some good-sized hard rock crowds.  It was a very smart way to build a big audience in a couple of reliable cities, and then expand the footprint from there.

Somewhere in the early 90's life got too busy and I haven't been to a concert in years. Now that I have the time, I'm not into the crowds. I've started searching for acts in smaller venues lately.

Dude, not only was Elvis my first concert at 16, but Elvis was my mom's first concert when she was 16! Of course, we are talking old, fat Elvis versus young, skinny Elvis but hell....I can say the same about myself.

And I have to go with Don Henley because I didn't get to see him with The Eagles so it's only fair you not see him either   8)

OK then with AiC, it was another three-band ticket, one of which was AiC around 1991-92...that I also didn't get to see :/

Was it Clash of the Titans?

In the fall of '90, AiC went out as the opening act for Extreme's nat'l 'big club' tour for their Pornograffiti album

Here are only 10 of the Punk Type Bands we Saw
1] The Ramones
2] Bad Religion
3] Flogging Molly
4] The Queers
5] Mr. T. Experience
6] Groovy Goalie's
7] Green Day (who suck live)
8] Blink 182
9] Reel Big Fish
10] Less Than Jake

So one of these you didn't see? As a side note what the hell is a power pop band, isn't that an oxymoron.

Nope, saw all of them.  Goo Goo Dolls through Boy Named Goo is an example of power pop.

10. Saving Jane

Out of those 10 I've seen Faith No More (big radio station festival in Atlanta) and Bowling for Soup.  Bowling for Soup "played" at an Atlanta club, drunk off their asses, played badly, and had a succession of strippers come out on stage.  The combined weight of the strippers was less than the guitarist.  Fortunately, everyone kept their clothes on.

8. Blink-182

10. KISS

Seen Blink-182 and Collective Soul out of this group.

Would have loved to have seen Iron Maiden and AC/DC - but the wife is not a fan of metal.  Kiss would have been fun just to see the stage show.

Yes, I've seen all of those bands.   \m/

I saw Van Halen around October 1978 at the San Diego sports arena.  It was my senior year of high school.  They were just getting big.  Tickets went on sale during the summer, and I managed to buy six tickets with my own money without really knowing who I'd be going with.  By the time school started in September, Van Halen was big, and the buzz around high school was about the Van Halen concert, but nobody had tickets -- except me!  I instantly had friends and a ride to the show.  So me and five friends drove there in one of the guy's family station wagon, which were huge back then, with the folding seats in the back.  On the way there, we were passing around a gallon milk jug filled with a mix of Southern Comfort and Squirt.  By the time I got to the concert, I was glowing a little.  I fell asleep during the warm up act (Ozzy), but woke up and thoroughly enjoyed Van Halen.

I saw Cyndi Lauper at the 930 Club in DC.  She was probably the best singer that I've seen.

I've seen other bands that I didn't list.  I had to see the Doobie Brothers, who I didn't like then and don't like now.  My wife guilted me in to seeing Tim McGraw with her.  I've also seen Rhonda Vincent, and I saw Laurie Morgan in December.  Probably others that I've forgotten about.

I've been to lots of concerts over the years.  Saw lots of great bands and lots of great bands performing poorly.  One of the worst shows I saw was The Black Crowes.  And I simply worshipped them when 'Shake Your Moneymaker,' came out.  And while I never saw him live, I watched Michael McDonald pick up some good looking woman at a two person bar in a hotel in Tampa.

One of the worst shows i saw was Def Leppard, it was later in there career. Elliot's voice was crap, kind of ruined the whole set. Saw Ozzy one time where he wasn't very good. Most of the shows were great, at least what i remember as i was usually shitfaced. RUSH was always great, so technically sound.

Here's a question, what was the ticket price of the first show you went to? Mine was $11, Scorpions Blackout tour in 82. I'm talking big shows here, not club shows. Went to a bunch of those that were cheap.

There was a Dio-Dokken-Y&T tour in '84 that would've been my all-time Grail tour to have seen.

It may have been over 30 years ago, but, I would have remembered a detail as important as the headliner.  And I wasn't there to see Y&T OR Dokken, so, no, it wasn't Dio.  As for the Crowes, they were opening for the Dead in a big stadium.  The place was at least half empty and the Crowes, purposely or not, played in a style that copied the Dead rather than the fierce rock n roll outfit they were.  I was majorly disappointed.

I saw Def Leppard two summers ago and they were excellent.

My first big show was U2 in 1992 at the then Brendan Byrne Arena in NJ (part of the Meadowlands). I think I paid 45.00. A year or two after that I saw the Beastie Boys at Nassau Coliseum for about 50.00, which I thought was pricey at the time.

Saw them at the Agora Ballroom/Stage West in West Hartford, CT.

EDIT: I have to add this- during this show (and a number of shows before) the venue used off-duty cops as bouncers and they were notorious for beating the shit out of any kid who tried to stage dive or otherwise get noticed. After some dumb kid jumped up on stage the bouncers immediently went after him but Exene Cervenka ( X's lead singer) got to him first, put her arms around him, and escorted him to the edge of the stage where his friends formed a buffer and disappeared him into the crowd.

Todd Rundgren since you can't spell it.  Unless you were too drunk/stoned at the concert to remember.

Drunk/stoned issues aside, I was considering going back and fixing the spelling of Todd Rundgren's name but got caught up in other things. I saw him at Toad's Place some time in the early 80's.

As much as I like them, I never did get to see Echo & the bunny Men. Md wins.

I also saw the Ramones many times. At least 4 or 5.

OK - Here are 10 mainstream bands.  My wife and I have seen all of them but one.  Decided to do it this way rather than listing the Big Bands we have seen, the punk bands we have seen, or the really obscure bands we have seen (OK, that overlaps with a lot of the punk bands).

Stone Temple Pilots
Buster Poindexter
Elvis Costello & the Attractions
Yes
Cake
Tonic
Talking Heads
INXS
Foo Fighters
Blondie

I have no words, other than I had the same haircut as Buster around 1990. Chicks dug it.

Maybe one or two songs, but that was it.  A 50 minute performance of very dissimilar material.

We saw Foo Fighters headline a small outdoor show at the Masquerade in Atlanta when they were supporting their first album.  It got unexpectedly cold and we about froze.

Saw Tonic at a summer radio station music festival during their 15 minutes of fame.  They were very good.

The lead singer provided one of the best lines at a concert we ever saw.  His hand was bandaged up and he made an impassioned statement against passing out drunk in your bed with a lit cigarette.  Sure convinced me!

Dude - I got paid to be there.  Easter weekend, freshman year of college.  Nothing else going on, so I agreed to work stage crew, and even got to jam on the stage as a part of the sound check.  Made $200 for a few hours' work rigging cables and amps and they let us stay to see the show for free.

Wolfstock festival, Spring of '91.  I was on the stage crew, but would've been at the show if I wasn't.

"...and they let us stay to see the show for free"  and you list this as a benefit?

Unless you were getting the hot MILFs that Mirth passed on who were lusting for some young NKONB, I cannot see this as a benefit?

If I named 10 bands that I've seen live most of them would be lies, not just 1. I'll simply name the ones that I HAVE really seen live, in no particular order.

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Probably around '89. They were just a college circuit band at that point and played with a group called Scram. I liked Scram more. Have you ever heard of Scram? No? Just goes to show you that I know how to pick them.

Adam Ant: In the early 90's at a club on South St in Philly. I was standing near the front of the stage and our eyes met at least once.  :dreamer:  ;D

10,000 Maniacs: I bought tickets to this show because a girl I was hooking up with was a big fan. I surprised her with a trip to the concert.

Ted Nugent: Sometime around '72. I didn't actually attend a concert but I did get to beat on his drum set. Does that count? My mother and he had some mutual friends so we went to one of his parties. I was very young and don't recall it but I'm told I had a lot of fun with his drums.

No, actually, they were the same gig as Information Society - Fishbone were the headliners for Wolfstock in '91

hardly - I was total metalhead back then, and I took Ice Cube's entrance onto the stage to stroll around the rest of the festival.  I did see him on stage for his first song and last song, but in between, I was out and about
