130+ people on board and no signs of survivors.  Apparently the plane spent 2.5 minutes in a total nosedive before crashing.  Can't imagine how terrifying that must have been.  RIP.

It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge.  War endures.  As well ask men what they think of stone.  War was always here.  Before man was, war waited for him.  The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner.  That is the way it was and will be.  That way and not some other way.

If they made nothing but WWII games, I'd be perfectly content.  Hypothetical matchups from alternate history 1980s, asymmetrical US-bashes-some-3rd world guerillas, or minor wars between Upper Bumblescum and outer Kaboomistan hold no appeal for me.

I guess it's sort of nice that the word "tactical" seems to refer to some kind of seriousness during your moments of mental clarity.

I think about what that must be like often. I lost four family members to a plane crash. One of the engines was on fire for several minutes before the plane burst into flames and crashed into the sea like a shooting star. I wonder what they were thinking in those moments and wish I could have somehow given them comfort.

Sad news.  I can't even imagine what it must have been like but I hope they figure out what happened.

I'm sorry to hear that.  I also can't imagine what it's like to lose someone close to me in such a horrific way, let alone four people at once.

From what I read, China has a pretty bad track record of transparency when it comes to aviation disasters (I know, stop the presses) - but the last air disaster in China was 12 years ago so you never know.  Iran had a similarly poor track record until they suddenly started publishing flight disaster reports publicly.

News said that one of the passengers did not board the plane because of the Covid.

Dang, Jarhead, I'm sorry to hear that.  That really sucks.

My bet is that we won't hear anything more from the Chinese government on this unless they come up with evidence (real or otherwise) that the crash was Boeing's fault.  As al said, the Chinese government doesn't exactly embrace transparency as one of its central values.

Pilot suicides are a major factor that airlines try to check for on an ongoing basis, but as with all sorts of psychiatric/mental health evaluations involving one's employer, the incentives can get really skewed.  The Malaysian Airlines 370 flight that "disappeared" so infamously was apparently determined to be a pilot suicide as well, but there have been others.
