US to give up administrative control of internet

US officials announced plans Friday to relinquish federal government control over the administration of the Internet, a move that pleased international critics but alarmed some business leaders and others who rely on the smooth functioning of the Web.

Pressure to let go of the final vestiges of U.S. authority over the system of Web addresses and domain names that organize the Internet has been building for more than a decade and was supercharged by the backlash to revelations about National Security Agency surveillance last year.

The looming change — if successfully executed — would end the long-running contract between the U.S. Commerce Department and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a California-based non-profit group that goes by the acronym ICANN. That contract is due to expire next year but could be extended if the transition plan is not complete.

Not sure exactly how I feel about that.  Vaguely threatened, I guess.  I live in the greatest country in the world.  I think the Internet runs just fine.  Not sure I want others mucking about in the administrative duties.

EDIT: Also notice that the only non-Anglophone country listed as part of the organization is the Netherlands.

Well there is this.  I was thinking last night that this would probably end up under the UN and we all know how great they are at corruption and mis-managing things...

"If the U.N. gains control what amounts to the directory and traffic signals of the Internet, it can impose whatever taxes it likes.  It likely would start with a tax on registering domains and expand from there."
