I've been holding back on new purchases for a while, being in retirement(ish) mode. Will probably continue, as the new job opportunity I was looking at didn't pan out. Ah, well, vacation continues for the nonce. Lots of games on backlog to catch up on!  8)

Nope.  It looks nice but it's very shallow and very repetitive.  The frequency with which the enemies show up is ridiculously over-the-top.   If you ever get into a firefight along a road, you can be sure that 3-4 more vehicles full of enemies or hapless civilians will blunder into the middle of it.  The AI won't know how to handle this and they'll end up playing bumpercars in the middle of the road.  Also expect random forest critters to show up (as they do, being attracted to fire and loud noises), so you can also expect to see bears, wolverines, and cougars blunder into the mix and start chasing down random people and/or any prey animals in the vicinity.  While it can produce some good, unintentional comedy, it's mostly just irritating.  The game also forces long cutscenes on you.  It'll arbitrarily decide that you've pissed off one of the enemy bosses enough that they've decided to capture you.  It doesn't matter where you are, unstoppable enemy units will show up ( I once got sleep darted while flying a helicopter at 3000 ft and 160 mph), one shot you and then you'll have to sit through long, boring cutscenes followed by having to fight through the same maze level (this happens over and over and over again), before being dumped miles from where you were.  Oh, you were 90% complete on a 30 minute long tiered-mission when the game decided to grab you?  Too bad, start that one over again from zero.

You can add AI buddies to your team but they tend to be more of a hindrance. If you get two of them, they'll constantly exchange banter, but their dialogue only consists of 3-4 lines each so I hope you enjoy repetition. They don't understand the concept of taking cover, so they'll get shot out in the open and you'll have to run out there and hold down the "revive" key for a few seconds to get them back up, all while getting peppered.  They also have the annoying habit of stealing your vehicle the moment you get out and buggering off with it and getting it destroyed in the process.  What?  You spent all your money getting that SUV with the .50 turret?  Soo bad Cletus just swiped it and drove it straight into a cliff face.  He's gonna need reviving, by the way.

I pounced with restraint:

F-14 for DCS (finally, and I did it without getting more DCS stuff)

Crush Depth: U-Boat Simulator - $44.61

Until the Last Plane - $10.35 (looks cute)

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun - $4.24 (very good reviews)

My haul is pretty "Modest" for this one.

Finally pulled the trigger on Command Modern Operations + Tacview advanced.  That'll have some cross utility with DCS.

Mass Effect Andromeda deluxe since I'm finally almost done with ME: Legendary.

Got the SOG module for Arma 3, didn't even know it was out.

That's about it.  Now on the other side I bought a ton of DCS campaigns and finally filled out my WW2 stable with the P-47, FW-190A and Spitfire.

Yeah, "modest" but I at least got stuff I'll actually play.

I am on the other side. I had a alot of fun with Far Cry 5.  Not perfect, but you certainly would be getting a whole bunch of gaming for the $9 sale price.

I put about 50 hours in, and enjoyed most of that time. Sure, it can be repetitive at times, but I kind of like that. Its an open world so there is some strategy in picking where to attack. Taking down the bad guys strong points for example and choosing weapons and approach.

Gameplay is similar to the Just Cause series that I would also recommend.

I even like the somewhat strange Far Cry New Dawn (30 hours in that one).

My biggest issue with the game was that I didn't really like some of the mandatory missions...the game just sweeps you off on some task now and then that you can't get out of doing...some of them are strange dream sequences that are used to advance the story...but I did find them a bit tedious at times.

Yeah, for such a cheap price I agree Far Cry 5 is totally worth it.  It has as lot of issues but it's a fun shooter, and the best of the modern Far Cry series IMO, largely because they removed the annoying grindy mechanics around finding animal skins.  Now hunting is just to get some extra cash.

Meanwhile, so far I have avoided buying anything. At all.

So far.

The fact that a part-time job opening to earn some expenses-cash (during my semi-retirement ;) ) just opened up today, doesn't mean I can start blowing the extra income I don't have yet on games.

Yet.

I'm thinking about getting the following:
Stellaris: Federations
Hegemony: Gold
Imperiums: Greek Wars

^Just a week ago Hegemony Gold - Wars of the Ancient Greeks was on sale @ GoG and I got it for US3.74. Imperiums: Greek Wars is on sale @ Steam for 17.99 which is 2.00 less than I got it for last month.

None of this of course solves your time problem...

Creeper World 4
Dual Gear
Constructor Plus
Close Combat: The Longest Day (somehow this is not in my library?)

Clad in Iron: Carolinas and Manila Bay DLC

Total comes to $85.

Although I haven't played beyond the introductory tutorial missions, I really like Plane Mechanic Simulator, which has continued development with some steadiness adding new British WW2 planes; and of course it's 65% off right now.

Here was my demonstration video back near its first late-alpha release on Steam:

Does Matrixgames have a summer sale?

There are a few titles I've been holding off on buying, waiting to see if a sale pops.
Title: Re: Steam Summer Sale Starts Tomorrow - June 24th
Post by: JasonPratt on June 25, 2021, 02:10:07 PM
Regarding Plane Mechanic Sim: it's still in late alpha (though very playable), in the sense that new planes were/are(?) coming. But the original dev abandoned the game (apparently?) and the new publisher, after some updates, has also abandoned it. I have no idea what the current state of the game is, although some reviews state the new publisher broke it.

I'll have to load up again and play for a while to see what's up, as I don't want to make a recommendation on outdated experiences.  :-\

(Besides, (1) I've been meaning to complete the game someday anyway; and (2) my Dad was a copter mechanic for the Navy in Vietnam, and this would be a nostalgic way to remember him, since he was interested in what I was doing with the game once upon a time.)

Matrix usually has a big Christmas sale, usually between Thanksgiving and the 1st week of January.  Also, you get an anniversary coupon on the anniversary of your first purchase with them.  Aside from that, they don't do too many big sales.

They can have quite good sales for Slitherine products on Steam.  The only possible drawback for some is that you only get a key for Steam, whereas with a Matrix/Slitherine purchase you get a download for Matrix and a key for Steam.

Lots of the Matrix games are in the steam sale - some with fairly hefty reductions. (even the CM games they have released) - not sure if correspondingly if you wanted to buy from Matrix direct.

I was hoping to pick up a few games straight from Matrix.  For some reason I thought they had two sales a year, like maybe over 4th of July or something.  No biggie, there's plenty on Steam I want, too.

I didn't pick up much.

Grabbed the latest DLC for Mius Front.  It's called Cold Front.  More fighting in Southern USSR but this time it's early 1942 so the Soviet gear is even more crap!

Also picked up Silent Service DLC for CMO, the Undead DLC for Mordheim (one of only two games that makes me rage enough to hit inanimate objects), and Radio General because it lets you play as the Canucks during WWII and not many games offer that.

I seem to recall their other big sale used to be Easter? (Which I seem to recall specifically because back before "Slitherine" they used to make slight nods to the religious holidays of Christmas and Easter, which I appreciated.)

No special sale announcements at Matrixlitherine, although I just noticed that they've started a new deal with a dev team to remake/update Master of Magic!?  :o

Might get Per Aspera but I've seen mixed reviews of it.  Surviving Mars is 75% off so that is perhaps more tempting.

If you feel safe installing and running that on your system, God bless you...

I was hoping to pick up a few games straight from Matrix.  For some reason I thought they had two sales a year, like maybe over 4th of July or something.  No biggie, there's plenty on Steam I want, too.

They usually have an Easter sale I believe...but obviously that's over too.

Why would you say that? Anything looking suspicious?

Looks interesting, but its from a Chinese dev and the "game" is 17GB?  Suspicious enough for me to stay away from it...

The file size is probably just due to poor / lack of compression for the 3D assets.

Star Trekā„¢: Bridge Crew and the DLC for $18aud
Did not realise it had non-VR until now. So I can play it without VR.

Just got titanfall 2

Not sure if battlefront 2 has a community or might get that as well?

Titanfall 2 is tons of fun.

A surprisingly engaging single-player campaign, I agree; I never got into the mp, but it looks like a hoot.

Hell Let Loose was my only steam summer sale purchase.  Really like it, hits the sweet spot between Arcady battlefield and more realism post scriptum.  I resisted getting it, because I already had post scriptum, but it's different enough that it was worth getting, plus eastern front arrives this month.  Also saw a mod for post scriptum that will be North Africa, so it's worth owning both.

Post Scriptum is rough, Gus.  You need to invest a lot of time learning the maps, the interface, and how to work with a squad.  Closer to ArmA than to Battlefield in terms of a learning curve.  Expect to walk for several minutes just to get to the front line only to die without ever seeing the enemy...a lot.

I did more damage during the sale than I thought I would. Everything was deeply discounted so money is not the issue, but time. First world problems, I know.

STEAM sent me a threatening mail after some sale refunds:

It looks like you've requested a significant number of refunds recently. If you often have problems with your purchases, please submit another ticket so that we can help you solve these issues.
Please note, that the Steam Refund Policy is not intended as a way to try out games for free. If we have reason to believe that the refund system is used in this manner, we may decline future refund requests.

Since one of the reasons you can select in the refund request part is 'It's Not Fun' this is leaving me a little confused as 'It's Not Fun' specifically means I'm refunding the game because I don't like it.   :-\

I would read their policy. Just because they give you the option, doesn't mean it is a valid basis for refund. In fact, it could be a basis for them to reject the refund request. As Admiral Ackbar recognized after it was already too late, "it's a trap!"

Therefore, what do most gamers use as a reason?  I don't refund often but only at times when the game is junk.  Plus, I am in the habit of waiting until it's $9.99 or lower.  Unless, it's a game from matrix/slitherine

I've only refunded once or twice but I put "program not working" as the reason. Legitimately, as one would not run at all and the other I was having weird audio issues for some reason and didn't want to go through the trouble to look into the problem once it was obvious menu settings wouldn't help.

Eight refunds in total (including bundles), of seventeen items.

I think I've refunded a half dozen or so.  All of them because I couldn't rebind the WASD controls to something more comfortable for a lefty.
(and Victory on the Sea because the AI was hot garbage)

Refunded just two as "would not run right" on my computer.  I didn't want to go through the hassle of trying to figure out a work around and might repurchase them when I get a new rig someday.

This is what I usually go with if the real reason is "didn't like it."  They can't prove that it's running satisfactorily on my setup, even if I meet the system requirements.

Maybe their automated system is seeing this as 17 separate refunds instead of 8 (because of the bundles).
