I just got this in the mail today and am excited to read through the rules and give it a go.

PanzersEast's B-17 Grog Wagon AAR gave me an idea to do the same thing for this B-29 game. If anyone is interested in attaching their GH screenname to this bit of fiction, it would make my playthrough a lot more interesting.
B-29 Name:
Miss PunctualityThe B-29 has more crew positions, of course (11 total), and they are as follows:
Pilot (CAPT):
Banzai_Cat (because if this thing crashes, it'll be my fault, and I'm rollin' the dice, so...)
Copilot (1LT):
JasonPrattBombadier (1LT):
NefaroNavigator (2LT):
mirthFlight Engineer (MSGT):
BarthheartRadio Operator (SGT):
bob48CFC* (SSGT):
JarheadLeft Gunner (SGT):
ShelldrakeRight Gunner (SGT):
GJKRadar Operator (SSGT):
undercovergeek Tail Gunner (SSGT):
Staggerwing* Central Fire ControllerEDIT UPDATE:I have read through the rules and boy oh boy, this ain't your daddy's B-17: Queen of the Skies.
- The first 10 missions require a HELL of a long way to go to get to the target. After Mission 10, it's assumed that Iwo Jima is captured, so missions are based from there, making things less stressful.
- Apparently, not all Gunners are required for missions. Sometimes, to save weight for extra bombs, Gunners did not go along for the ride. Sometimes too, guns were left off. There's some die rolls to make to see if the Gunners and guns suck up extra gas once this behemoth takes off. So the Gunners' lard asses may cause us to ditch in the ocean at some point (LOL).
- The game downplays Japanese aircraft attacks as being much less frequent than in B-17, QotS, which makes perfect sense. Also, Japanese pilots were poorly-trained, so this isn't like going into the heart of the Reich. However, the system seems to balance Japanese aircraft counters with Green, Average, and Ace pilots all. Until I get into the charts and tables, I won't know for sure but I'm betting it'll be more Green enemies than Aces.
- Speaking of Aces...there are not any crewmember aces in B-29, not like B-17 had them. The reasoning the rules give is that the firing systems and weapons on the B-29 were much more sophisticated than on the B-17, and the spray and pray tactic is highly discouraged in training. Makes me think Gunners are generally just taking up space, so hopefully you Gunners will get some action/get on most of the flights. Only the tables will tell for sure once we get this going.
- There IS, however, a Novice and Veteran status crew can have. I think you get Veteran status after seven missions, though I need to double check that. Apparently there's modifiers to table die rolls based on experience, so it does play something of a role.
- Overall, it's been WIDELY indicated by players experienced with B-17 and B-29 that their similarities end at their names. So this AAR may report in a different way than you might be used to, if you're a B-17 QotS fan (as I am. I still have my copy right here by my desk!)

Sweet!
Can I be tail gunner? I'll keep those Nakajima-powered Rump Rangers at bay!
LOL. Sure, Stagger. I'll do it as a first-post, first-get position called out. You in, Mirth?
I've had dreams where I was a waist gunner on a B-17. The right side gunner on a B-29 will work nicely if you care to add me. :)
I R an engineer, so flight engineer should be right up my canoe.... or something...
Geek and I are waist gunners on the B17 - so I'm happy to go with any available gun position - if not, I'll be the guy that crawls through that long tunnel above the bomb bay, distributing coffee and sarnies.
Put Bob on the radio and he can pun the Japs to death! O0
What a puntastic idea!
Let me be Navigator. We might make it back to base!
Thanks, guys. 'Lessen I'm missing something, we have five spots left. I bet 'geek might take one, but I don't want to shaghai/speak for him. Though it may come to that... >:D
I volunteer for Central Fire Controller.
Or Bombardier if CFC is already taken. But you don't want that kind of curse on your bomb accuracy, do you? :P It would be a shame travelling so far just to blow up an empty rice paddy or baby milk factory. Well, the latter might be somewhat worthwhile in the long run. ;)

Someone's gotta do it, so I'll put you in the Bombadier's position. You're an officer now, congratulations. And oh yeah, we might all die on takeoff on the first mission anyway when those big ass bombs blow up after we crash land, and who's fault will that be? This guy, not you.
Though they WOULD be 'your' bombs, technically...
In any case, welcome aboard. :crazy2:
I'll fill any roll still open.
Thanks, JH. Put you in the Radio Observer position. Will change it if you want; thought about CFC, might change you over to that if there's no other people wanting to sign up.
All, be sure to check back as I'll be updating the first post from time to time. I'll probably start a different thread to just post each Mission result, much the same as PE did for his B-17 AAR. Meantime we can use this thread to discuss whatever.
If it is still open I will fill the other waist gunner position. Always wanted to shoot a .50 cal!!

Yeah...I'll take CFC. I thought that was already taken.
No problem, all yours.
And co-pilot for me!
I can flap the wings with my mind and push the plane along if the cockpit gets all shot up! :D
^ That's what you were over on the B-17, no?
Regardless, you got it.
What's the name of our bird?
'The Punisher!
^that'll do...that'll do
I suppose it depends on who's getting punished...
Who cares? That name is da bomb!
Since nobody indicated a name yet I started putting together some nose art based on a few ideas.
First idea was going to be "Show Time" with a painted floozy taking off her bikini top.
But PUN-isher, I totally get and I'll try to figure something out.
Punny Bunny
Punninglinguists
I can't stop. Please kill me.
No - don't stop - I like it........
The Expundables
Punforgiven
Yeah, keep going. You might regurgitate something epic. These are good, not quite epic though.
Puns don't kill people...puns do.
I rather liked The Expundables
OK, I put together a few ideas in a couple of minutes in Photoshop. So they're not perfect, but I can fix 'em this weekend if I need to. The original idea, Show Time, then The Expundables, and finally (and actually my favorite of the three), Miss Punctuality.

Alright then. I'll make it "Miss Punctuality."
Wanted to make the "Pun" part all caps, but it doesn't look good in that font...and I think the font looks pretty awesome as is. I could overthink this for hours and end up having the plane crash on takeoff on Mission 1. So unless there's any strong objections...Miss Punctuality it is!
undercovergeek, I'mma give you that last slot. Bob nominated you and I might get started with this tomorrow if I have time. Otherwise Sunday will be the first play through I think.

We should probably just blame the Japs. It's better for crew morale.
Update: I won't be starting the game today as I'd hoped. Too much to do this weekend and not enough free time to lay out a board game and play through the first mission. Never fear, though - I fully intend to get it in this week. Already have most of the graphics generated to do the mission reports, so when that happens and I get it done I'll start posting to a new thread and put the link here just in case y'all miss it.
Whenever you start a new one, if you start one, can I be one of the Japanese pilots sent to intercept?

Sadly, no, it was a joke from the (lack of) co-pilot duties in the previous B-17 game.

I should shanghai Gus instead of 'geek for that radio room slot, shouldn't I?
Not that it matters, of course. But either one of them may not appreciate their names going down in a blaze of glory when we get a BIP in one of the fuel tanks.
Lol just saw this, I'm happy either way, I'll read and laugh at Gus' ineptitude or be in and cause my own brand of mayhem!

OK, crew of the Miss Punctuality...plus lurkers out there...first mission will definitely be played this weekend, possibly Friday night. I have the Mission Sheets and Mission Log printed, so I intend to scan each one after the mission so you can see the results directly, though it will probably be the last thing in each Mission's post to serve as a summary to my AAR-speak and color commentary.
Started a new 'Mission Logs' thread for the B-29 game:
http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=11041.0
Just an intro in place right now, those there is a great YouTube video about the B-29 from the crew's perspective in there, including roles and responsibilities. It's a training film from the war, which makes it even more interesting to watch.
Outstanding job on the intro stuff, BC!
+1 What Mirth said O0
Thanks guys. Also thanks for putting your names to this. Hope this is as epic as possible!
Brilliant
Looking forward to the mission
^Agreed. I've got me flask of tea and cheese sarnies ready.

I played through Mission 1 tonight; just finished it, in fact.
Made a few mistakes but they were minor, and considering I'm new to the system that's not too bad.
This is definitely a different bird than B-17 (literally and figuratively) Queen of the Skies. So many other things to worry about in B-29 besides enemy fighters.
I'll try to post the results to Mission 1 by tomorrow night. Hint: we don't die. O0

As engineer, and sitting right behind you, it's my continuing duty to bat you across the back of the head for bringing up those negative waves. :knuppel2:
And lesson learned. I'll write these in Word from now on even if it's a pain to type the HTML code for stuff.
Shockwave Flash crashed twice while I was writing up the first mission in Word, almost as if my computer hated me for writing it.
Anyway Mission 1 is now posted.
Thanks for the positive feedback over there, guys. Much appreciated. :coolsmiley:
I hope to sneak another mission in this weekend, but the wife might have me busy every single day. Regardless I hope to have at least one mission, possibly two, posted per week.
No worries - and thank you for doing it, BC.
I played through Mission 2. It might take me a day or two to write it up and post it though. Just wanted you guys to know I'm still on track with it.
No hints this time as to what happens, either. >:D
Posted Mission 2 over in the Mission Logs thread.
Had to split it in two as I was well over the 20,000 character limit.
Sorry it's so long, but it's a LONG mission, and plus, it is fun to write it out like that. Hope you guys enjoy.

That is a nicely hooked up Mini! O0
I'm really not that keen on the 'new mini'. Years ago, however, I did have a blue and white Mini Cooper.
Sorry, all. It's been a while and I really did/do want to keep up with this thread, but B-29 isn't as fun as I'd hoped it would be.
Most of the time I'm chasing navigation points and doing endless nav checks in the first few sea zones, then random event checks when hardly anything happens. If weather is bad, the same damn thing keeps happening - lightning hits the plane, no effect (which is very tough - I keep rolling 7s on 2d6, and 7=No Effect). I guess that's good for crew health but it happens. Every. Time. So literally nothing happens in the game.
Even fighter attacks are fairly boring. Goodness knows I've tried to liven it up but enemy planes rarely attack (and this is pretty much as it was, historically speaking) so there's not much of a story to tell.
(1) Take off
(2) Nav check
(3) For W = W + 1 Nav Check; if W > 200,000, goto (4)
(4) Yawn
(5) Yawn
(6) Iwo Jima! Fighters? Nope.
(7) Yawn
(8 ) Yawn
(9) Japan - Yawn
(10) Target - Fighters? Nope.
(11) Ack-ack? Yep. Hit? Barely.
(12) Return to Base, Repeat previous steps backwards
As many have said over on BGG, this game is not B-17, but it offers its own challenges. I recognize those challenges, but it's just not digging its claws into me at this time.
It's a bit draining to try to liven up something that's not all that interesting to play. I'd still LIKE to finish what I started, but I have other things distracting me right now. I've thought about restarting that Covert Action AAR. I also have the Birth of the Federation AAR. And a couple more reviews staring me in the face right now.
I DID play through Mission 3; I just haven't reported it yet. I'd like to get to it. I know your lives aren't hinging on your alter-ego's fates, here, but those of you that have been following this, my apologies for letting it slide. As I said I'd like to try to return to this sometime, but not probably for a month or so.
No problem B_C. Life is too short to do stuff you don't enjoy. O0
What Barthheart said. Life is indeed too short and if you're not having fun it's time to move onto something else. 8)
Thank you though for entertaining us up to this point. O0
Ditto! :)
Also, Mechagodzilla 1 was apparently waiting for us on the next mission. So we dodged that. 8)
Just tell me I get to back to the states and my wife and 7 children.
Wait don't tell me that. I'll go AWOL and hide on some Pacific Island with the beautiful topless native women.
Fin.

The ridiculous amounts of Navigation DRM caclucations and die rolls, that only lead to more such Nav calcs, put me off the original B-29 over Japan. Think I mentioned this at least once before. I picked up the Korean expansion at the same time I got the original because I heard this to be the case, and that the Korean one has more action, but I've not yet tried it.
Either way, I started considering chopping down the Navigation insanity into one or two rolls per slot movement but never quite ironed out the details because I had received Picket Duty by then. Which has far more action.
Update:
Legion Wargames is sending me a copy of the expansion, Hell Over Korea. I told them I'd do a review (I'm sure Brant wouldn't mind some extra content eventually, and I went through channels to get it, so there) of both titles.
HoK is a lot closer, from the looks of it, to B-17 Queen of the Skies (another game for which I have an upcoming AAR). So when the time is right, I want to restart this AAR, but with Korea. I'll create a new thread when the time comes and will probably put you all that originally signed up into the death seats again.
I'm very interested in seeing how the game system portrays the Commie fighters, especially the jets, versus the B-29. Should be a lot of fun.
