I've heard that tokomak (?) fission reactors would be doable now for revolutionizing power generation at local levels, although I'm not sure I want a bunch of small nuclear piles the size of large mailboxes in every neighborhood. But supposedly they're practically foolproof compared to regular reactors, since they aren't expected to generate even distantly the same power output per unit.

Admittedly, I don't know if the people I heard talking about this some months ago knew enough of what they were talking about, but they tend to be reasonably well-informed about tech things. Could just be wishful thinking.
