Here's my list (2022):

Great/Classics
1. Empire Strikes Back
2. New Hope
3. Return of the Jedi

Good
4. Rogue One (though the end doesn't make sense in my opinion)
5. Revenge of the Sith
6. Attack of the Clones
7. Phantom Menace
8. Solo

Bad to very bad (storywise)
9. The Force Awakens
10. The last Jedi
11. Rise of Skywalker

Some would argue there are only 9 Star Wars movies.
The 2 other are movies situated in the Star Wars universe (Solo & Rogue one).

In my mind the oldest are the best but it is has been a while since I've seen those.   Sometimes things are better as a memory.

Even if i think that Empires strikes back is the better movie, i could watch a New Hope once a week without a problem (it's the movie i've watched the most). Never get tired of that one.

If we take out Solo and rogue one, there's the original trilogy and then the the sequels that shouldn't exist imho.

Complete List of STAR WARS Movies : https://www.imdb.com/list/ls029559286/

The highest rated are the original trilogy.

If you prefer an elaborate explanation you should contact Sheldon Cooper  8).

Nothing beats the originals. That said, I just re-watched Solo a few days ago and it's very good. I enjoyed Rogue One a little more than Solo even if as Anguille says the ending is a little...byzantine.

The Mandalorian is excellent but I don't know how or if it works into the ranking system since it's not technically a movie. Same with Book of Boba. And the animated series as well, which I haven't seen yet but peeps around here really love...Clone Wars, Bad Batch, etc.

And let me add...by 'the originals' I mean the ones unfutzed with by George Lucas years later, adding assorted scenes/details/characters/oddities.

We Star Wars fans can get quite mental when it comes to debates like this.

First 4 are great.  I'll watch them anytime

1)  The Empire Strikes Back
2)  A New Hope
3)  Rogue One
4)  Return of the Jedi

The next were ok, but had some problems.  I'll watch them occasionally but skip some stuff.
5) Solo
6) Revenge of the Sith
7) Clone Wars

These are disappointing or just plain bad.  I'm fine never seeing them again.

8) The Force Awakens
9) Rise of The Skywalker
10) The Phantom Menace
11) The made-for-TV Ewok Movie
12) The Other made-for-TV Ewok Movie with Wizards and shit.

The final one will be shown on a loop in hell as a punishment worse than getting your scrotum sandblasted and dipped in vinegar

13) The Last Jedi

^A man of wealth, taste, and daring putting Rogue One that high...I like it and agree.

I daresay that Return of the Jedi was the beginning of the downturn.

13) The Last Jedi

Agree the first four on the list were great. But I have lost interest in the series after that.

I thought that "The Force Awakens" (the first "Disney" Star Wars movie) was such a rehash of old plot devices and particularly visuals that I was bored silly. I have pretty much stayed away from anything to do with Star Wars since.

And then...(WARNING: RANT STARTING   :hide:) there is the fact that for more than 40 years the Star Wars 'verse has demanded that I continue to suspend disbelief while the characters on-screen fight WWII in space. The weapons have the same level of accuracy that WWII weapons had (actually worse)... And fighters zoom about in space like an arcade WWII air combat sim. (RANT FINISHED )

Having said that, my wife is a huge Star Wars fan still, and she tries to rope me in to the new stuff...but the "Force is strong" with me...(by"Force" I mean abhorrence born from repellence).

I've only seen the original trilogy and that new one with the tie fighters zooming in on the water on some planet that looks like something from Pearl Harbor.  I don't remember if that was Solo or what?

I'll see myself out.   L:-)

I was just thinking the same thing.   :buck2:  For me the whole appeal of the OT is the "wild west WWII in space" vibe it had going on.  I want to check out Mandolorian and Book of Boba Fett since I hear both those series hit the same chords.

I can only speak to The Mandalorian but it is most certainly a western in space. Protagonist is basically a new sheriff on every new planet he lands on.

I also love the WWII dogfights in space and the PEW PEW sound effects, even though we could never really hear them in actual space. Suspension of disbelief!!

1. A New Hope (I acknowledge ESB is a better film but ANH is my favorite)
2. Empire strikes Back
3. Revenge of the Sith (It gets here on Ian McDirmid and Ewan McGregor alone)
4. Rogue One
5. The Return of the Jedi (Ewoks cost this the 3 spot)
6. The Phantom Menace
7. Attack of the Clones (The acting in this is abysmal but it can be stupid fun sometimes)
8. The Force Awakens
9. Solo (A movie I never asked for or cared about.  Harrison Ford is Han Solo.  If this had been on Disney Plus I probably would like it more.)
10. The Last Jedi (A very well shot, acted and directed movie with a nonsensical plot)
11. Ewoks Battle for Endor (Wilford Brimley fighting a Force Witch of Dathomir is awesome though)
12. Ewoks: Caravan of Courage
13. Star Wars XXX A Porn Parody
14. A video of Chewbacca taking a crap for 2 hours reading a magazine
15. The Star Wars Holiday Special
16. Rise of Skywalker

TV series...

1. Mandalorian (Easily some of the best Star Wars for me.  It rivals ANH for my favorite of any SW properties)
2. Clone Wars (Shows how creative Lucas can be when he wants.  Redeems the prequels)
3. The Book of Boba Fett (In progress but already huge potential
4. Star Wars Rebels (The kid centered episodes bring it down)
5. Bad Batch
6. Star Wars Resistance (I actually never made it through the whole show.  Hated the setting)
7. Droids
8. Ewoks

A New Hope is easily #1. Those of you who were not alive when it came out cannot appreciate what an impact it had. I grew up starved for even bad Japanese black-and-white sci-fi or monster movies. When the original Star Trek came out on TV it exploded our minds, light years in advance of anything done before. It sadly went off the air too soon and we were starved for sci-fi until A New Hope came out in 1977. It was as revolutionary and mind-blowing at the time as Star Trek had been in the 60's. The Graphics were AMAZING. The scope was awe inspiring. People look back at the movie today and say "Meh", but at the time it was unbelievable. I drove 2 hours and stood in line for 4 and a half hours with some friends at the Galleria in Houston during opening week to see it. We went back and watched it 4 times in the first month. That does not sound like much today, but we were all in college at Texas A&M and had to drive 2 hours to get to the nearest theater showing it. No my friends, for all of its flaws and cheeziness by today's standards, "A New Hope" remains one of the best movies of my life and easily the best Star Wars movie.

Well stated Solops and Anguille.

I was 11 years old when Star Wars A New Hope was first released in theaters.  Everyone in my grade at school saw the movie except for me.  My parents were not well off financially and viewed going to the movies as a luxury that couldn't be afforded.  It was only after months of begging to see the movie that they finally agreed to take me and my little brother to see it.  Believe it or not Star Wars was still playing in theaters as late as February of 1978 which is when I saw the movie for the first time.

Star Wars left such a mark on my life that I will never forget.  Wish I could get that magical feeling back again.

Yes!!  I remember that show as well.

There was a lot of people comparing Battlestar Galactica to Star Wars at that time.  A lot of sci-fi fans could not equally accept both stories for what they were but insisted one was better than the other.  For me it was all good stuff!

My grandmother took me to see Star Wars when it was released in 1977...I was three. She loved it, I stared at the people behind me the whole time :)

I was much more mature when Empire came out but I can't recall seeing in a theater for the life of me.

I do clearly remember seeing Return of the Jedi in a local neighborhood theater and it being the biggest thing since sliced bread. I also remember the Star Wars Christmas special being released :)

Also the old movies? I love the original trilogy and think they are very solid movies (storywise and also from a technical point of view). I agree however that all the following movies have been weaker, mostly the last trilogy (very weak storywise).

Just realised this morning because of a Facebook pool, that Stars Wars: a new hope is one of the very few movies i can rewatch again and again. Ghostbusters and Back to the Future are two others in the list.

Putting aside the whole "groundbreaking for its time" argument, I always thought the original trilogy was a solid set of action adventure sci-fi films.  The dialogue in those films are no worse than the prequels or sequels.  I've never delved into the expanded universe or whatever so I have no context for the animated shows, but I hear they are quite solid as well.

First 3 were okay, the rest (except Rogue One) not quite so much.  Yeah, loved the more-fleshed-out techie stuff like any other gearhead (but space bombers bombing other ships...in space?) but that is about it.

Fully agree about the animated works.

I could forgive a number of Rainn Johnson's transgressions on that film, like the absolutely pointless Canto Blight side plot.

Gravity bombing in space??? Yeah that's a hard no go for me.

Good
4. Rogue One (though the end doesn't make sense in my opinion)
5. Revenge of the Sith
6. Attack of the Clones
7. Phantom Menace

8. Solo
I think the internet might be broke  ;D

There were elements of it I really enjoyed - but teddy bears fighting Storm Troopers never made sense after I came out of rehab

I pretty strongly dislike the cannibal Teddy Bears.

However, my real hatred for them comes from what could've been.

After I read the late JW Rinzler's exhaustive deep dives into the making of the six George Lucas helmed films, I was very disappointed with how much better the early ideas for ROTJ's jungle insurgents were.

Originally, they were to be Wookies, an idea abandoned early because Lucas felt the Wookies were too "high tech" for his long standing idea that the Empire should suffer a Vietnam War style defeat at the hands of low tech freedom fighters.

In the actual early drafts, they were "Ewaks" small, vicious lizard like creatures with disturbing eyes and an absolute carnivore attitude.  Imagine ROTJ with armed, intelligent velociraptors.

Of course this was deemed too scary for kids.  Lawrence Kasdan fought hard to keep the Ewoks either Wookies or Ewaks, but Lucas had kids and toy sales in mind over substance.

Man, I just can't help but think how great ROTJ would've been if it was a Wookie slave revolt, Spartacus style rather than a bunch of 4 foot teddy bears.  As a kid I'd have found that absolutely badass.

That would've been good. The Empire should really check beforehand where they decide to build their Death Stars. They have so many problems with those things.  :idiot2:

3. 'EPISODE VII - THE FORCE AWAKENS' (2015)
4. 'EPISODE VIII - THE LAST JEDI' (2017)
5. 'EPISODE IX – THE RISE OF SKYWALKER' (2019)
6. 'ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY' (2016)
7. 'SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY' (2018)
8. 'EPISODE VI - RETURN OF THE JEDI' (1983)
9. 'EPISODE III - REVENGE OF THE SITH' (2005)

In all honesty I think it's criminal how much they have glossed over the Wookiee's. Hell, KOTR does a better job showing and explaining the Wookiee culture better than all 9 movies combined.

Interesting list. Other than the Battle for Hoth, Empire was a little too slow for me, although it was certainly integral to the overall story. I completely agree that Rogue One and Solo were far superior to any of the enumerated films, which all seemed to get progressively worse.

I was about to agree with you but then..

Hmm...maybe it's not so criminal after all....

You can't rank Return of the Jedi above Empire Strikes Back because of the Ewok menace!

That little fella looks a bit like Quiet Riot or Hannibal Lector.
