I can't go home again :'(
...I tried to play the Medieval 2 Total War Crusades campaign yesterday and just couldn't do it. The graphics were just too dated and I've played it probably 100 times.
So, are there any other games out there you can recommend that cover the Crusades? I already own Crusader Kings 2, Stronghold 2 and Age of Empires HD. None of them really grab me. But I am jonesing for a tactical level game (hopefully with a strategic campaign layer) on the Crusades, if one exists.
Any suggestions?
(You also own Stronghold Crusader with its XXXTTREEEEMMEEE expansion. ;) Which, unlike Stronghold 2, actually is about the Crusades.)
Some people like The King's Crusade which was on sale recently. Its reviews aren't great, though, and I haven't personally played it. It may be too much like M2TW, or not enough like it, however. (The same people made the King Arthur games which are sort of like an RPG version of MT2W, but are generally much better regarded than TKC.)
I tried to get into Stronghold Crusader but it was a little too cutesy for me, you know?
The King's Crusade, eh...I'll check it out.

Maybe a mod for "mount and blade"? Like one that simulates being a lord in Jerusalem crusading? Has to be something like that.
I own Fire + Sword...I wonder if there will be a mod for that. Looking for something a little more strategic though. I don't know if it exists :(
The King's Crusade has some pretty harsh reviews against it too.
Neocore, the developer behind King Arthur made one I believe, but it was much more of a linear RPG then strategy game and I just didn't like it that much. Can't remember the name, but it was something like "crusades: Thy Kingdom Come"
I've had some fun with this. I haven't finished the campaign yet.

The king's crusade is decent its fun for few hours only. I can suggest you a Northern Crusade if it interests you: Real Warfare 2 Northern Crusade http://store.steampowered.com/app/202860
Knights of Honor is also still there.... ;)
THere was a game which primarily dealt with Teutonic knights called real warfare northern crusades. Not that great though. Similar to total war.
THere is also assassins creed which was sort of fantasy crusades?
I didn't care fore King's Crusade or Thy Kingdom Come at all. I have both and tried to like them, but they are pretty linear and small scale compared to M2TW.
Like you, I enjoy gaming the Crusades and there are few choices. What has been my late filler is Crusader Kings 2, playing as one of the crusading leaders and setting the start time just prior to the start of a crusade. There is an awful lot more to do that just fight the Crusades battles, but it's a way to kind of get the flavor without going back to M2TW.
I might do that...for lack of anything else out there 😓
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is always an option 😎
Thanks for the other suggestions guys. I LOVED the first NEOCORE King Arthur game but their subsquent releases, including Thy Kingdom Come, got more and more craptacular, it seems. The Real Warfare games have the same deal...not so great. That Last Templar game looks wacky fruity.
Anyone play that old RPG Lionheart? I have that through GOG and never cracked it open.
I think the computer wargame market desperately need more crusades games, maybe hoping for FOG2 future DLCs?
I'm surprised why AGEOD hasn't done anything with that period. Their engine used in Alea Jacta Est would lend itself nicely to that.
Wow I really thought there had to be something out there I didn't know about. I guess I was too hasty in uninstalling M2TW.
I have a small strategy indie game set in the times of the Crusades but it isn't really good. Have to check at home how it's called but i guess it's hard to find anyway (old and not great). Something like a board game.
Not really a ringing endorsement there but I'm curious what it is.
I found a video...don't know how hard it is to find it.
In the comments, there's a link to a downable version of the game (and it seems with some fixes). Will test it (i do have the original dvd at home).
I can't see your video above :/

Fixed link. O0
Heh - the video is in German?
Yeah, the game seems to be a german product though it seems to have different languages (English as well).
PS: thanks for fixing the link.
I could have sworn I'd played an RTS yonks ago that had The Crusades in it, somewhere.. but racking my brain all I keep coming up against are
Praetorians, Warrior Kings and Celtic Kings... hmmm.
Think!!
Well, it wasn't Warrior Kings, or at least not the upgrade/remake/sequel Warrior Kings: Battles. That's a rather fun 3D RTS on godawful huge maps, with medieval flavor, but it isn't the crusades. It's more like paladins vs pagans.
Praetorians was Roman, obvs, and I think so was Celtic Kings from the same group. (Also Nemesis of the Roman Empire.)
I reloaded Medieval 2 TW :/

The developer folded before they finished patching it, unfortunately.
Had such potential, too. :-\

This would be my call as well. Very under-rated title, surprising in its complexity and playability.

That looks kind of interesting....

Yes, actually I like the tactical battle system much better than Total War games, it was slower and seems more realistic, the first warfare game was my favorite medieval tactical game ever, unfortunately the campaign added later was mediocre, and developers abandoned the game really soon, hence never improved.
I can't believe there's not a total conversion mod covering the crusades for both total war Rome or Attila. Have you tried poking through the mod forums at the main total war site ?

There was at least one in the works. But those big conversion mods tend to take years before they're finished. If they even get there.
EDIT: It's for
Attila and was nowhere near release last I checked. Was listed on TW center forums.
I peruse Steam and TWC every now and then but haven't seen a Crusades mod in a long time.

Not for PC, but
Infidel! Is a Men of Iron (which has a nice Agincourt at least) might be a good boardgame representation. I must admit, I found it curiously unispiring. I think there are some other medieval boardgame systems that have some crusade battles. Which reminds me that I hope to be inspired by Arquebusier! if it ever comes out.
^Is there solitaire play?
Oh yes and there is always Field of Glory Field Oath of Fealty add on.
http://digitalgameworks.com/index.php/vengeance/
if you look at the list of units, it says infantry crusader , so I'm assuming were in crusade land here.

I only played Agincourt and Courtrai where there are no Infidels (or only infidels?). The system is pretty simple. You could devise priorities for
the different commands and roll for order of movement and other activities.
Thanks guys, some interesting stuff in the last three posts.
