Graphics look nice and recall the original Metagame pack.
Anyone remember the 1986 Atari game?

I got pictures of some of the prototype figures that will be for sale last month. Look at: http://grogheads.com/featured-posts/15684 where there are pictures of the Ogre and the Howitzer.
Looks good. I remember the Origin version of Ogre and Car Wars, wow that was a long time ago.
Modelling looks nice. I hope you can modify it too. Like different colors, expand to different factions like the Nihon Empire etc.
Do not know anything about the pc game, but I had lots of fun playing the board game in college.
Nice.
I was so angry when they raised the price of MicroGames from $2.95 apiece to $3.95 apiece.
Confused for a moment, I thought you meant an Ogre Battle game.

I knew about the PC/C64/Apple II version back in the day. My Dad used to get computer magazines and I'd read through them mostly checking out what new games were coming. I have the board game still. I think mine is the 2000 VCR box, I bought it with Shockwave and Reinforcements.
I remember playing Steve Jackson's Illuminati game. That was a fun game - and a good one for a computer.

Thanks for reviving an old forgotten memory. Loved Illuminate....an awesome game, had a group that played it for many hours back in the day.
Like CJ I read about the C64 version of OGRE in Run magazine back when I was 8 or 10.

You're welcome. It was a great game. O0

First trailer

Recall that the game was based on Keith Laumer's Bolo series of stories and novels. Kind of sorry that he doesn't get some respect for the original concept.
I know those original MicroGames got cobbled together quickly, but are you sure it was really based on that? The Font of All Knowledge tells me that Ogre came out only a year after Laumer's first Bolo book.
Of course, that same Font says it is based on the Laumer's book, but the production deadlines seem awful tight to me. Maybe it was different in 1976?
Far Away Sooner,
I remember Bolo was part of the inspiration, Drake's Hammer's Slammers and Heinlein's Starship Troopers were mentioned in the rule book.
I saw the trailer, looks great.
There's news on Steam!

They're taking beta testers.

This brings back a lot of memories from a time that was so much simpler, and choices were fewere.
The classic Four Howitzer defense in Ogre was suggested in a magazine article, I think the Space Gamer, and stimulated a lot of gaming. So surprising to see it resurrected.

Yup. I had a subscription to
The Space Gamer when that article came out.
This is out now. Is there any compelling reason to buy it? It looks extremely spartan, drab and boring. What is the draw?

That doesn't bode well for sales.
I never had OGRE back in the day, despite enjoying most SJG products.
Now that I have the basic set, I have no desire for a computer game version.

Nope.... extreme sale bait for me. The board game is fun because it's a board game.... I think it would lose a lot of it's charm as a PC game...

It does look drab and the initial price is too high, imo.
^Yep, agreed. I may pick it up if its ever in a real cheapo sale.
Hard crowd in here...
I'm a huge OGRE fan and, while the graphics are not high-end, this implementation is very good with a clean, fast presentation.
In fairness, it's OGRE and G.E.V. with an excellent unit mix and the map editor is extremely robust. I do hope we get a unit painter or something like it. I'd love to roll out my Vatican Guard unit that I have in Ral Partha pewter. I suppose the debate about price point is fair, but the design so far has been stable and rock solid.
It is accurate to say, however, that if you found the board game wanting, this will not suddenly win you over.
Winner for me.
I'd rarher play the board game.
Maybe someday I'd pull the trigger on the e-version, but for me, the board game has far more appeal.
My only experience with Ogre was the 1980's computer game and it was fun.
Can someone then explain what made the board game such a classic? I never played it.
It was a simple to learn, fast playing, small foot print game that you could get almost anyone to play.
It was about small conventional armies trying to take down large automated killing machines.
It was very easy to play solo.
It cost $2.95.

Still is, as far as I can tell, on all counts.

Not so much this, though.
At bottom it's a meditation on the mighty one versus the weaker many. Everything else was tacked on when the original blew up fueled by the love some of us had for "Bolo", "Hammer's Slammers", &c.
The original "one OGRE vs a bunch of tanks and infantry" scenario was a very tight design. It was by far the scenario we played most, even after GEV and the larger maps came out.
It plays quickly, we used to play it at lunch at school, and there are a lot of different options to try to win the scenario. And, as mentioned, it was $2.95 ;)
