This is very strange.

Suddenly, my wife cannot access internet using her user profile in our Windows 8 machine.  But my profile is fine. It is connected via LAN.  Any ideas?

I feel a bit behind - I haven't used Win 8 much yet, and still work mainly with Windows 7 & Server 2008. I don' t think network connectivity should be that different though.

It sounds like your wife's user profile may have been corrupted in some way.  I'd suggest this:

1. First, which internet browser are you using? (IE, Chrome, Firefox?)  Sometimes for IE, resetting it to its default settings.

2. If that isn't the problem, log on with your wife's account, and check on the Network & Sharing Center (from Control Panel).  Does it indicate any 'broken' access from your PC to router to internet?  Clicking on those broken links tells windows to fix the issue (as an alternative to doing it via command line).

3.  Try to open a command shell:  Start - Run - 'cmd'  (without quotes).  The command shell will open up, and try to 'ping' a working URL address (i.e. type ' ping www.google.com '     no quotes,  and if it says its replying after some small delay, then your internet access is working somewha.

3. If that doesn't look broken, and you are able to browse the internet on your own profile correctly, it's possible your wife's account profile may have been corrupted somehow. You can try to back up your wife's important data somewhere (USB disk, or create a backup folder on C:\ etc), and then use Windows User Accounts to delete her account, and then try to create a new one for her.

Windows User Accounts:  Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage User accounts

I loath Win 8.

I recently purchased a Win 8 laptop for work and I have spent way too much time trying to do some of the basic things that were at least simple in Win 7 and before. Also, for some reason Chrome seems all jacked up on this machine when I've had no trouble with it on my Win 7 box, all my OSX comps, and even the Linux machine I've been fiddling with.

Win 8 be de Dibble. :buck2:
