New Rig
« on: September 12, 2019, 09:15:10 AM »
With a new office and new desks, I just couldn't resist getting a new rig too...

Intel Core i7-9700K
32GB DDR4 Memory
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, 11GB
3TB HDD + 480GB SSD
800W Power supply

I figure this powerhouse will remain relevant for at least 3 years.

Very nice!

I am waiting on my own rig as the CPU cooler is to arrive anytime.

Just wondering why you paid extra to get 32 GB of RAM and not just 16 GB? I researched and read that 16 GB of plenty for gaming, but some may need 32 GB for work programs or video editing. Thus I ordered 16 GB as I don't have any RAM heavy work programs on my home computer.

I also stayed with a RTX 2070 as I am only running a 60 Hz 1080p monitor for now.

^Bragging rights.

My main rig now has 32GB and I didn't want to downgrade there. It certainly can't hurt my VR flying in DCS.

I am not sure you can ever have too much memory.

Nice rig, JH!

My very lightly used back-up rig is listed for sale in the trading post if anyone happens to be interested.  O:-)

Makes sense! If I run into a need for 32 GB, I could always go to that later. I don't do VR yet, but maybe later.

I am impressed with your RTX 2080 Ti choice. Wow! It's about double what I paid for the 2070 Super.

The rig altogether was a great deal. $2400. Most of that is probably GFX card, lol. Most Iíve ever spent on a pc by about $800 or $900.

I jinxed myself by saying this powerhouse will remain relevant for at least 3 years. lol.

Enter the 3000 series. System became obsolete overnight. Just over one year.  :'(

Toonces - Don't ask me, I just close my eyes and take it.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

Hey congrats Jarhead, may your gaming go well.  Good to see a lot of familiar names still posting here (I was on a long hiatus due to work and family.  Are you using any VR headset yet ?

I wouldn't worry too much about being irrelevant with a RTX 2080 gpu and your CPU.  The RTX 2080 is superb and there's always something new around the corner.  You can update most of the components you need and probably even sell the 2080 pretty fast.

I just built a new system together myself after 10 years and just settled on a GTX 1660 Super but with a Ryzen 3600 CPU on sale and a nice mid tower from Phanteks (had to splurge a bit).  Still gaming on 1080p/60Hz these days, but mostly RPGs or strategy games.

Good to hear from you, bro. This is an old thread though. I got this rig over a year ago! Was just thinking about getting a new one with an RTX 3080. I currently play VR with a rift-s, quest 2 and hp reverb. I have a reverb g2 on order!

@Airboy:  Good to hear from you too and nice game blog by the way.

@Jarhead: I should have checked that thread date - I see the other rig thread now.  You have been busy!  Dang that's a lot of VR sets.  Is there one for each occasion ?
