Title: Iron Harvest
Post by: airboy on January 13, 2019, 08:20:16 PM
Gus published on the "mythic front page" about Iron Harvest an alpha level RTS release.

Visuals are really interesting.  No interest in RTS generally or steampunk alt WW1 Mechs specifically - but the visuals were really memorable.

Yeah the unit and mech designs are great in this game. Although I have outgrown RTS for the most part, the alpha of Iron Harvest and the small taste of the game I got so far is excellent. The alternate history will definitely draw me he full release.

Had my eye on this for quite some time. Almost have backed it but am gun shy after regrets from buying into games before release. The gameplay that I have seen at least reminded me of Company of Heroes.

^It is similar and can get a bit frenetic, but there are some great features too...like being able to equip your troops with abandoned equipment. The mechs are great too and by the time of release each faction is supposed to get many more.

Thank you for the quick response, when is the approx. release?

It is very similar to CoH. In fact, when I played the first alpha build, I was a little put off by how similar it was. However, I'm finding that as the game evolves some of the most obvious similarites are starting to diverge from CoH. However, I suspect in some ways, it will always feel like a reskinned CoH clone. This can be either good or bad, depending on how one feels about CoH.

Are you sure about that? Only 2 alpha builds before beta? They have such a long way to go to be feature complete...beta by the end of January doesn't sound right at all...where did you see that?

I contributed to the Kickstarter campaign and get the developer's updates. Don't have them in front of me right now.

That's because it is an original work from an artist and the game just rides on the artwork. It is not a case where they develop the game and the artwork follows
https://www.artstation.com/jakubrozalski

I believe there's another game which uses the same art. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/169786/scythe

There is also a digital version of Scythe which I also have but it is kind of byzantine and obtuse.

I wouldn't say Iron Harvest 'rides' on the artist's work, either. The art itself is used as loading screen art in Iron Harvest.

In the PC version of Scythe, the artwork is used for much more, like in-game cards, etc.
Title: Re: Iron Harvest
Post by: AchillesLastStand on January 14, 2019, 02:10:10 PM
A few concerns I have about the game are.......
1. Size of maps, if its one thing hate is a RTS with small cramped maps with no room for flanking/expansion etc.
2. A good variety of different units.
3. Base building.
Title: Re: Iron Harvest
Post by: Gusington on January 14, 2019, 02:35:10 PM
Well your concerns at this point are certainly warranted as all three of those items are in the current build to some extent. I did, however, find the maps to be large enough to maneuver in most of the time.

What do mean by "rides"? It seems as if you're suggesting without the art, there would be no game. If that is the point you are making, I disagree. Certainly the aesthetic and designs featured in the artist's work help make Iron harvest distinct, but it is not the art work that makes Iron Harvest a game.

Someone commented about having no interest in RTS and steam punk but the concept and artwork is fantastic. Art does some wonders in sparking interest. I wouldn't even look at this game if it weren't inspired by Jakub's art. Being familiar with his work before any games were made, I feel that Iron Harvest is like a franchise of the world he created (like all those Warhammer, Mechwarrior, Star Wars games).

Jakub thinks Iron Harvest is set in his world (intellectual property) as well.
https://www.artstation.com/artwork/8R3dQ

Though it is correct that artwork does not make a game. In my view, this is clearly a game created around the artwork.

I think you're still missing the point. Iron Harvest benefits from the imagination and creations of the artist, but it isnt reliant upon it. Why don't you play the game, and then maybe you will see what I mean.

There have certainly been games that would have been very generic but for their IP. However, I think it remains to be seen, whether Iron Harvest will fall into that category.

I know you're saying that the game can/may hold out on its own even without the art. Let's see how it goes.

I was under the impression that the artist (Jakub) had a lot of influence in both games' creation - at least in the creation of the background information and the lore.

Thanks. I am more interested now because that could mean a ground up engine is less similar and has more unique mechanics than coh does. The very early videos definitely looked exactly like a mod for coh would. I assume the mechs are more complex to control then and have some nice mechanics that restrict or add more skill than just - go here and shoot with right click?

No. It's all pretty much go here and shoot that with the mechs. They have different specialties and capabilities,  but it's still all pretty basic. Some are geared toward targeting infantry, others are geared toward killing other mechs. Pretty simple. They are just tanks with legs.

In early alpha I was very concerned by just how similar it looked and felt to COH. It is still very similar, but the IH engine is much more advanced and significantly enhanced. Terrain is more detailed and it appears to be deformable. Still, the concepts of using cover and seizing resource points is fairly identical, from a game play perspective.

Cool thx. If they got to COH as a gold standard, that is an achievement in itself.

I took delivery from Kickstarter a couple of days ago. Playing it through alpha and beta, I loved it for the world of 1920+. If you don't like RTSs in general or have had your fill of Company of Heroes type games, you will probably not be as intrigued as me.

That said, if you are into steampunk, dieselpunk, alternate history, WWI history, WWI fiction or any mix of any of those...I think you'll like it :)

Actually, I have to say, as someone who loved CoH when it came out, but hates revisiting it today due to its age - Iron Harvest really hits the sweet spot for me.  When you play solo, the game lets you pause and give orders, which is actually impressive for an RTS.  The game feels far less micro-intensive than CoH, while retaining the same interesting tactics like directional cover, grabbing weapons from the ground, securing abandoned vehicles/field guns, etc.  I bet you could buy it on Steam and figure out within 20 minutes if you like it or not, and refund it if you don't.

I decided to take the plunge.

The game's look and feel is well done and polished.

But have been put off by the inane tutorial...

First there was a series of snowball fights...to teach how to move the map around and point and click. Kind of silly, and took way too long...

Then next in the tutorial is a "deer hunting" scenario. But in my case, the main character keeps missing the deer with the hunting rifle. So I am in an insanity loop where she keeps shooting, the deer keeps running, and me the human...is just not entertained. I did this for about 20 min yesterday and decided I had more important things to do with my life... I am certain that I am missing some "trick" to get past it...but do I really have to Youtube it? for a tutorial?

I'll try the game again in a few days. This time probably just bypassing the tutorial.

I know there is a good game in there...I just hope I get there before I lose patience.

^I remember both tutorials well. I had to look up a YouTube video to get past the deer hunting. I kind of liked the snowball fights. I can assure you that it gets better afterwards. The single player campaigns have some difficult parts but they are very well done.

The tutorial was an instant turnoff for me too, as is the entire story line circulating around this young girl who is destined to become a powerful partisan leader. That being said, once you get into the action, there is enjoyment to be had there...some. It's certainly not the best RTS ever made, but the mix of post-WWI tech and steampunk daka daka is appealing.

Chosen One archetype + war story set in a semi-authentic postindustrial world = yuck.

I found out the problem I was having with the deer hunting scenario. Basically the girl has to use her special ability to kill the deer. I was clicking the special ability with a left click (good so far...), but when I went to fire at the deer I was inadvertently hitting the right-mouse button to select the deer (bad)...this was instantly deselecting the special ability...but doing it so quickly that I did not see what was happening.... So when I actually made the shot, I was not using the special ability...but just did not realize it. Anyway I figured it out and I got through it. I guess the play testers did not have someone as fumble fingered as me.

I am now running through some "go here...go there...shoot the bad guys..." scenarios...  again, hoping it gets better.

I grabbed it in the sale after playing it for free. It impressed me enough to grab it. Shame none of my friends own it to play skirmish. The mate I was playing with was not impressed enough to pay $34aud. The amount of maps is a major stumbling point for skirmish. Still so far the campaign has a lot of character. Kinda reminds me of playing the original command and conquer. Whacky off the wall units and interesting back story.

My 30 second review:

The Operation Eagle DLC released a few days ago. I like the units and models. They appeal to me more than the Eastern European and Russian stuff. However, the story is still corny as $hit and the missions are all the same. Build a base, attack this refinery, fortify it and prepare for a massive counter-attack that is coming in 60 seconds.

If there is one major thing that annoys me about the missions it is that you can never secure your rear or your flanks. Enemy units always spawn from off-map in one location or another at various intervals. With the relatively low unit caps, this makes the game a very frustrating exercise.

The game has a lot going for it with the unique 1920s steampunk look, but the underlying mechanics suck overall and will drag the game down no matter how much content they release as DLC.
