Well, Katzbach was strange.  The terrible rain.  The muskets not working...Hey what about Desden at about the same time where (for the last time), a big French Imperial Army
wrecked a mostly Austrian Imperial army.  Murat, charging in the rain...big win for the French.  So the Coalition forces retreated toward Bohemia.  Napoleon stayed back at Dresden, possibly
because news of Katzbach and Grossbeeren was coming in.  Vandamme with I Corps pursues the Russian Guard and 5 other Coalition corps.  A bloody fight ensues near Kulm late on the
29th.  The next morning, Kleist, leading the Prussian II Corps, decides to avoid the other main highway across the mountains to Bohemia because it is full of retreating troops.
He more or less accidently arrives behind Vandamme just as the Russians decide to attack.  as a result, Vandamme and most of I corps is captured (and Kleist is nearly captured also).
Things could have turned out differently pretty easily since the French Guard and two other corps were also pursuing the Coalition forces.

Anyway here's things at 5pm on the 29th:

And -- wouldn't you know it?  Kleist by 9am is arriving right behind Vandamme and St. Cyr:
